Freshman forward Lauren Douglas had five blocks, just one shy from her career high. Penn State Nebraska Purdue Michigan State Michigan Illinois Iowa Minnesota Ohio State Northwestern Wisconsin Indiana NU played two close contents at home last week, hosting Nebraska and Ohio State. Against Nebraska, Lyon knocked down two key 3-point baskets with under six minutes remaining to spark a Northwestern rally and close the gap to after trailing by as many as 15 points. She scored 12 points in the game, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out two assists. In Sunday s game vs. Ohio State, Lyon tied a career-high by making four 3-pointers and led the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points, shooting 50 percent (5-of-10) from the field. Lyon also collected four rebounds, while helping with one assist and one steal. This is Lyon s second weekly honor and the fourth for a Northwestern freshman. Teammate Lauren Douglas collected two Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards of her own in November. It is the first such award for a Wildcat player during the conference portion of the schedule. TAYLOR TIME It was a long time coming, but junior guard La Terria Taylor finally made her Wildcat debut Sunday at home vs. Ohio State. The Chicago, Ill., native has been hampered by injuries during her first three seasons with the Cats and was cleared to play prior to the Nebraska game (2/7). She suited up for the Nebraska contest but did not see her first action on the court until late in the first half on Feb. 10 vs. OSU and again played in the second half. Coming out of high school, Taylor was a highly-ranked recruit, earning all-state and all-conference honors at Von Steuben H.S., and she will provide more depth for the Wildcat bench now that she is cleared to play. DOMINATING DEFENSE So far this season, Northwestern is limiting its opponents to just.349 from the field, which is the best field goal percentage defense in the Big Ten. If you break that down even further to conference only games, Big Ten foes are shooting.337, which also ranks first for field goal percentage defense. The Wildcats have stepped up their defense in the last seven games, allowing six of those opponents to shoot under 40 percent. In fact, in NU s 11 Big Ten games so far, only two opponents (Michigan,.451 and Michigan State,.418) have shot over 40 percent. NU has limited five opponents to under 30 percent and is 4-1 in those contests. She swatted five shots Sunday vs. Ohio State, which was one off her career-high of six (ties for seventh in NU singlegame history), and the third time this season she s had five-or-more blocks. Douglas currently has 45 blocks on the year, which ranks ninth in NU singleseason history. She currently ranks sixth in the Big Ten, averaging 1.9 blocks per game, and is the only freshman to rank among the top-15. Douglas also is the only freshman in the Big Ten to average at least 1.0 block per game. FANTASTIC FRESHMEN NU freshmen forwards Maggie Lyon and Lauren Douglas lead the rest of the Big Ten freshmen in a number of categories. The two rank No. 1 and No. 2 in scoring amongst freshmen with Lyon s 12.6 points per game leading and Douglas is right behind at 9.8 points per game. These two are also leading the Big Ten freshmen in rebounding, but this time it s Douglas s 4.4 rpg that paves the way and Lyon s 3.8 is No. 2 amongst freshmen. RISING ROSER Sophomore guard Karly Roser is one of the conference leaders in assists, ranking second with 6.4 dimes per game. She currently has 153 assists, which has already surpassed her entire assist total from of 142. The Hamilton, Ontario native, has helped the Cats rank highly in the assist category as their 15.7 dimes per game are third. DIAMANT DOMINATES GLASS Senior forward/center Dannielle Diamant grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds vs. Nebraska. After just three rebounds in the first half, Diamant had 11 in the second to record her team-leading seventh game of the season with 10+ rebounds. Her 14 rebounds were the most by an NU player since Amy Jaeschke had 17 rebounds vs. Central Michigan on Dec. 11, Diamant, who recently surpassed the 500-rebound mark, is averaging a career-high 7.8 rebounds per game, which ranks sixth in the Big Ten. TOUGH STRETCH NU just recently wrapped up a stretch where it played six opponents in eight games that were either ranked or receiving votes in the polls. Nebraska was NU s sixth opponent that was been ranked or receiving votes in a span of eight games and also the seventh since the Wildcats began their Big Ten schedule on Jan. 3. NU kicked off the conference slate against Penn State, who at the time, was ranked No. 9 in both polls. After playing unranked Indiana on Jan. 6, NU then took on back-to-back foes featured in the polls as Illinois was receiving votes in the AP poll prior to the Jan. 10 game and Michigan was No. 25 in the AP poll and receiving votes in the USA Today poll on Jan. 17. Purdue was the fourth ranked opponent of the Big Ten slate with its No. 15/13 ranking and MSU came into the 1/31 game receiving votes in the AP poll. Iowa s No. 24/25 ranking marked the sixth ranked Big Ten opponent NU has faced and Nebraska was the seventh with the Huskers receiving votes in both polls that week. NU has faced eight opponents appearing in the polls, including No. 9/11 California during the nonconference season. UPCOMING MILESTONES Kendall Hackney needs 28 more points to reach the 1,500-point milestone and 61 more points would tie her for ninth in all-time scoring with Amy Prichard, who had 1,533 points from She also needs to play in two more games to tie the NU all-time record of career games played and three more would break Laura Augustyniak s record of 122. Dannielle Diamant recently surpassed the 900-point milestone and currently has 905 points. Several Wildcats are approaching significant statistical milestones: Name Milestone Has Needs D. 4 NORTHWESTERN GAME NOTES K. Roser 300 assists NOTABLE DEFENSE VS. INDIANA Northwestern s defense set a few marks against Indiana on Jan. 28 as IU s 39 points were the lowest point total for a Big Ten opponent since Feb. 12, That game also featured Indiana, as NU defeated the Hoosiers On Monday, IU was held to just 21.0 percent from the field, which is the lowest field goal percentage for an NU opponent since Nov. 20, 2009, when SIUE shot 19.4 percent on 12-of-62 from the field. LONG-RANGE LYON Freshman forward Maggie Lyon had a career-high-tying four 3-pointers Sunday vs. Nebraska, marking the 14th time this season the Wilmette, Ill., native has had at least two 3-pointers in a game. NU tends to find results when Lyon hits from long-range as the Cats are 9-5 when she scores twoor-more 3-pointers in a game, and are 5-2 when she drains at least three 3-pointers. Lyon is averaging point FGs per game, which ranks eighth in the conference. She is the only freshman in the Big Ten to rank in the top 15 in 3-point FG made. SIGNIFICANT STREAK Senior forward Kendall Hackney has never missed a game in her Wildcat career. Since her freshman year, Hackney has been a consistent presence in the NU lineup, playing 120 consecutive games, which ranks fifth in school history for games played. She made her 91th-consecutive appearance in the starting lineup (108 total) vs. Ohio State. Hackney is on pace to break the NU record for career games played and could do so on her home court at Welsh-Ryan Arena. With 120 games under her belt and five regular-season games remaining, she needs three more to break the record of 122 games, set by Laura Augustyniak ( ). If Hackney plays in every game, she would break the record Saturday, Feb. 23 vs. Wisconsin. CLOSE CALLS Northwestern has been competitive against some of the best teams in the country. NU trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half against No. 13 Purdue and came within two points with less than 30 seconds to play, but couldn t escape West Lafayette with the victory. NU opened its Big Ten schedule on the road against the highest-ranked team in the conference, Penn State, who was ranked No. 9 at the time, and also played then-no. 9 Cal on Dec. 17. The Wildcats played both ranked foes close, losing by just six points (71-65) to the Bears. Cal came into its game vs. NU defeating its opponents by an average of 24.4 points per game. The four-point PSU victory against NU was the slimmest margin of victory all season for the Nittany Lions. KEEPING IT CLOSE IN CONFERENCE Thursday s game vs. Nebraska (55-50) was the sixth NU defeat that was decided by six points or less. Five of those games have come against Big Ten foes as the Wildcats were also edged in four-point losses by No. 9/9 Penn State (73-69), Indiana (68-64) and No. 15/13 Purdue (77-73) and by five against Michigan State (67-62). NU dropped a close decision to then- No. 9 California in the nonconference season. HACKNEY TABBED CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FOR THIRD YEAR Senior forward Kendall Hackney received Capital One Academic All-District accolades for the third time in her Wildcat career. A communications studies major and two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Hackney will now be placed on the Academic All-American national ballot. That streak ended against Purdue, but Hackney chipped in 17 points, including 11 in the second half, which was one point behind NU s leading scorer Maggie Lyon who had 18. Hackney has always scored in bunches for Northwestern, recording in double-figures in 77 of the 120 games (or 64.2 percent of her games played). Douglas is the only freshman in the conference to rank in the top 15 in blocks. As a team, Northwestern has recorded three or more blocks in 22 of the 24 games so far this season and five or more in 18 games. SCOUTING MINNESOTA Record: 15-10, 4-7 B1G All-Time Series Record: NU leads Of Note: Minnesota is 2-3 in its last five games with wins against Michigan (82-67) and Iowa (72-60). The Gophers have two losses against Illinois and another at Nebraska in that span. Sophomore guard Rachel Banham scores in bunches for Minnesota, averaging a team-high and Big Ten-best 21.4 points per game on.450 from the field. Junior forward Micaella Riche also averages double-figures at 12.4 ppg and leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game. Last year, these two teams also played each other once with Minnesota taking the win at Welsh-Ryan Arena. DYNAMIC DUO Freshmen forwards Maggie Lyon and Lauren Douglas have formed quite the dynamic duo for the Cats so far this season. The two combined for 34 of Northwestern s 67 points at Boston College and are putting up notable numbers. Lyon has scored in double-figures in eight of the 12 games she has played this year and opened the season with a career-high 21 points. She played a key role in NU s comeback against Boston College, scoring eight points, including two 3-pointers, in the final six minutes. Douglas has been in double-digits in seven games so far this year and has two 10-rebound games. Jaeschke also was tabbed an Associated Press honorable mention All-American, marking the first time since 1998 that a Wildcat appeared on the prestigious list. Northwestern s improvement from (7-23) to (18-15) was tied for the 10th best turnaround in the nation and ranked fourth among BCS schools. In winning percentage comparison, the Wildcats above-.500 mark (.545) was a 31.2 percent improvement from last season. The success yielded NU s first postseason appearance in 13 years and a ticket to the WNIT, which led to two victories and a trip to the event s round of 16.
