1 COUNTING DOWN TO 200 Western Michigan head men s basketball coach Steve Hawkins is only three wins shy of winning his 200th game as a head collegiate basketball coach. Hawkins has compiled a record during his three years with the Broncos, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004 and NIT appearance in Prior to joining the WMU staff seven years ago as an assistant coach, Hawkins went at NCAA Division II Quincy (Ill.), including three NCAA Tournaments. QUICK STUDY Steve Hawkins reached a coaching milestone when he won his 50th game as WMU head coach against Bowling Green on Jan. 7. Hawkins needed only 76 games to reach 50 wins, which was faster than all but two of the nine active coaches in the MAC with 50 wins at their current school. UNPRECENDENTED RUN After a tough start to last season during the nonconference portion of its schedule, WMU responded by nearly claiming a third-straight Mid- American Conference West Division championship. With a win against Northern Illinois on the final day of the regular season, the Broncos would have won the division title and claimed the No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament. However, NIU prevailed as WMU finished second in the division. WMU has finished in the top three in its division for five straight years, the best stretch in 54 years. Well before the league went to divisions, WMU was third in 1949, second in 1950, second in 1951 and first in During their current run, the Broncos were third in 2002 and 2003, first in 2004 and 2005 and second last season. TROPHY COLLECTING With season sweeps against rivals Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan, WMU clinched the inaugural Michigan MAC Men s Basketball Championship, sponsored by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. The award is presented to the team that wins the season series among the three schools. DOING THE REITZ THING Junior center Joe Reitz enters the season as a legitimate MAC Player of the Year candidate coming off a stellar sophomore campaign. Reitz was named the 2006 MAC Report Online MAC Player of the Year to headline several honors he received. Reitz was also named Second Team All-MAC, ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team, three-time MAC West Player of the Week and MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Reitz finished the year as the top scorer (15.5 ppg-5th overall) and rebounder (7.4 rpg-2nd overall) in the MAC among teams with winning conference records. He reached double figures in 25-of-31 games with nine 20-point games and five double-doubles. TAKING THE FREEBIES Joe Reitz finished the campaign with one of the best seasons in Bronco history at the free throw line. He made 155-of-211 free throws last season, good enough for third all-time in makes and second in attempts. STELLAR SNIDER Senior point guard Brian Snider finished his career last season as one of the top players in Bronco history. The four-year letterwinner from Cadillac, Mich., finished his career with 406 assists, second all-time at WMU, and 149 steals, sixth all-time. Snider was part of one of the best runs in WMU history as the Broncos went with two MAC West championships, a MAC regular season championship, MAC Tournament championship, one NCAA Tournament appearance and one National Invitation Tournament appearance. In his senior year, Snider led the MAC in assists (5.13 apg) and steals (2.03 spg) on his way to being named Honorable Mention All-MAC. HITTING THE BOOKS Not only has WMU been impressive on the court, but they have also taken care of business off the court. Last season, the Broncos placed three players (Reitz, Snider and Andrew Hershberger) on the five-player Academic All-MAC Team. Snider became only the 17th player in league history to be a three-time Academic All-MAC honoree and the fourth Bronco. CLEANING THE GLASS WMU continued to be a strong rebounding team last season, finishing third in the MAC in rebound margin (+1.4) and second in offensive rebounds (12.62 orpg). Individually, Reitz and Hershberger were second and fifth in the MAC in offensive rebounds with 3.07 and 2.66 boards per game. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE The Broncos lost to three NCAA Tourament teams during the season (Northern Iowa, South Alabama, Kent State) and the combined regular season record of the 14 teams WMU lost to was (.590). WINNING WITH DEFENSE After being one of the top offensive teams in the MAC during Coach Hawkins first two seasons (1st-2004; 2nd-2005), the Broncos won with defense in In its 14 wins, WMU held the opposition to only 60.4 points and 41.2 percent shooting from the field. During the Hawkins era, WMU is 48-8 when holding opponents to 69 points or less and 49-5 when opponents fail to shoot 45 percent or better. WINNING THE CLOSE ONES Last season, the Broncos were 11-4 in games decided by 10 points or less and 4-2 in games decided by only one possession (three points or less). In his three years at the helm, Hawkins teams are in games decided by 10 points or less. HOME, SWEET HOME Western Michigan is 33-6 at University Arena in Steve Hawkins three years as coach WESTERN MICHIGAN BASKETBALL

11 Commissioner Rick Chryst From Super Bowl quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (Miami University), British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State University), World Series winning manager Bob Brenly (Ohio University) and Olympic bobsled team member Brock Kreitzburg (University of Toledo), the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the world of athletics. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid- American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. Under the guidance of Commissioner Rick Chryst, the seventh commissioner in the history of the league, the MAC has responded to the everchanging landscape of membership issues and member standards in the fast-paced environment of collegiate athletics. In May of 2005, the MAC added Temple as a football only member (effective 2007) with a plan that includes a men s and women s basketball scheduling partnership with the Philadelphia-based institution. The conference now has national leadership positions on the following NCAA committees: Board of Directors (Dr. Sidney Ribeau, BGSU); Management Council (Dell Robinson, MAC Associate Commissioner); Championships/ Competition Cabinet (Brad Bates, Miami); Committee on Academic Performance (Brad Bates, Miami); Academic Eligibility Compliance Cabinet (Warde Manuel, Buffalo); and NCAA Athletic Certification Committee (Shonna Brown, MAC Assistant Commissioner), Playing Rules Oversight Panel (Rick Chryst, MAC Commissioner). Further, The MAC also has representation on the Division I Sport Committees and related governing groups: men s basketball (Laing Kennedy, Kent State), baseball (Dave Hekee, Central Michigan), volleyball (Kelli Andrews, Toledo), softball (Janna Blais, BGSU), football issues committee (Mike O Brien, Toledo), men s basketball issues committee (Charlie Coles, Miami), men s basketball rules committee (Reggie Witherspoon, Buffalo), track and field (Rich Ceronie, Miami), women s basketball issues committee (Jim Phillips, Northern Illinois), women s golf (Robert Collins, Northern Illinois), women s gymnastics (Jerry Reighard, Central Michigan) BCS AD Advisory Committee (Mike O Brien, Toledo) and BCS Presidential Oversight Committee (Dr. John Peters, NIU). Both in the classroom and on the field of competition, the MAC continues to excel at the national level. In an NCAA report released in October 2004, the MAC led the 11 I-A conferences in long term graduation rates for football studentathletes at public institutions. In March of 2006, Chryst and Cleveland Cavaliers President Len Komoroski announced that the Mid-American Conference Men s and Women s Basketball Tournaments will remain in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena through The MAC also announced a format change for both tournaments, bringing all 12 men s and women s teams to Cleveland beginning in This year, the MAC will co-host the 2007 Women s Final Four at Quicken Loans Arena, after successfully hosting the 2006 NCAA Women s Basketball Regional at Quicken Loans Arena. Chryst also announced a new, five-year relationship with International Sports Properties (ISP), Inc. to oversee and coordinate the league s marketing and sponsorship rights. ISP, which currently manages 29 college properties nationwide, is considered the leader in the collegiate sports marketing industry. The MAC will be ISP s first conference property. ISP will be responsible for managing, and ultimately growing, the MAC s stable of corporate partners, which currently stands at nine - FirstEnergy, Huntington Bank, Kraft, Marathon, GMAC Financial Services, MBNA, Aeropostale, Gatorade and Sirius Satellite Radio. The 2007 men s basketball tournament at Quicken Loans Arena drew a total of 33,417 spectators, including 10,253 at the Championship Game this season. The total attendance was the second-highest four-session total in MAC Tournament history. It shattered the previous total of 33,349 set in Three teams represented the MAC in post-season action with Kent State advancing to the NCAA Tournament, while Akron and Miami both participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). ESPN recently extended its television contract with the MAC through The agreement guarantees the league exposure for the term of the agreement on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. ABC/ESPN owns exclusive rights to the MAC Football Championship game and ESPN/ESPN2 has those same rights to the MAC Men s Basketball Championship. Complementing ESPN s national television coverage is a broad regional television package in football, men s basketball, women s basketball and selected MAC championship events. The regional network is anchored by long-term agreements with FSN Ohio and Comcast Local in Michigan and Indiana. Comcast Chicago has also been an outstanding partner in raising the MAC s profile in the nation s thirdlargest market. Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men s and women s basketball since its move to Northeast Ohio. The Mid-American Conference was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 fulltime schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947) and Ohio University (1946). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University ( , 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). Affiliate members include Indiana University- Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) in men s tennis and men s soccer and Missouri State University (formerly known as SMS) in field hockey. For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and tennis.
