13 WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BUCKEYES... Team This team has the necessary ingredients mainly senior leadership to contend in the Big Ten once again and position itself for a deep postseason run. Scott Gleeson, USA Today #4 Aaron Craft This kid is the poster child for college athletics. He plays with great toughness and verve, and he is a natural winner. Seth Davis, Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports Take the pictures and put them away. College basketball may not see a leader like Craft for quite some time. A relentless on-ball defender and consummate fl oor general, this senior point guard has been about one thing during his collegiate career -- winning. Jon Rothstein, CBSSport.com Not only is Craft a very, very good college basketball player -- probably the best perimeter defender in the country for each of his three (very successful) seasons, as well as a morethan-capable fl oor general and team leader -- he is also quite possibly the highest-achieving student-athlete in college sports. Eamonn Brennan, ESPN.com It starts and ends with senior point guard Aaron Craft, the heady fl oor general who is one of the best on-the-ball defenders in the country. His knack for making big plays won t show up in the box score unless you re looking at the winloss column. Scott Gleeson, USA Today What Craft does best, however, is anchor a perimeter that will be absolutely stifl ing at times this season. He s probably the best on-ball defender in the country, capable of turning a trip into Columbus into a nightmare for opposing point guards. Rob Dauster, NBCSports.com Aaron Craft will continue to wreak havoc defensively and get under the skin of opposing fans. Nicole Auerbach and Eric Prisbell, USA Today He s a leader, he s a tough defender, he s been working on his offensive game. I m interested to see the things that he s learned from the camp and the things that he s accomplished this summer in terms of his game and see the difference between his junior and senior year. He did well against the other campers. He played me tough Aaron Craft and I know he learned a lot at the camp. Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers (CBSSports.com) His stat line (10.0 ppg, 4.6 apg) doesn t speak to his importance as a floor general. Craft s numbers should soar in , and so should the Buckeyes. Scott Gleeson, USA Today Aaron Craft is now a senior, and many people oddly hate him despite his tremendous discipline and perfect fit inside OSU s system. Matt Norlander, CBSSports.com #10 LaQuinton Ross Deshaun Thomas was an awesome offensive talent at the college level, but I get a feeling LaQuinton Ross is going to make Buckeye fans forget about Thomas in a hurry. Matt Norlander, CBSSports.com There were a handful of moments in each of Ohio State s four tournament games in which Ross was clearly the best and most talented player on the floor. Eamonn Brennan, ESPN.com LaQuinton Ross, a 6-8 junior forward, has the potential to make up for lost production and his skill set is reminiscent of Thomas all-around game. Ross can step out on the perimeter to make jumpers, put the ball on the floor when he needs to, and score with an array of post moves. Scott Gleeson, USA Today The loss of last year s leading scorer Deshaun Thomas isn t debilitating because talented but enigmatic LaQuinton Ross emerges as a viable replacement. Brent Yarina, BTN.com With Deshaun Thomas gone, someone is going to have to take on the role of go-to scorer for Ohio State, and if last year s stretch run is any indication, Ross should be that guy. Rob Dauster, NBCSports.com Head Coach Thad Matta Matta has won or shared a piece of the Big Ten title five times in his nine seasons, and his Buckeyes won the Big Ten tournament championship in March even though the league was as good as it s ever been... Matta has elevated OSU to another level, a consistency that may be taken for granted at times. Andy Katz, ESPN.com The vast majority of college hoops fans probably don t realize how good Ohio State has been under Thad Matta... In a league where Michigan State and Indiana are considered the marquee brands, Ohio State has been outperforming them. Andy Glockner, Sports Illustrated Thad Matta has turned Ohio State into one of college basketball s most consistent programs by making the Sweet 16 four straight seasons and averaging 30.8 wins a year while doing it. So the question is whether Matta can win 30 again while making another Sweet 16, and I think the answer is yes. Gary Parrish, CBSSports.com #3 Shannon Scott A role player during his first two years in Columbus, this should be the year where Scott emerges as a legitimate threat on both sides of the ball. Jon Rothstein, CBSSports.com Ohio State Men s Basketball-13
