7 Outlook A Look Back: Stanford Sensational In Nobody broke out of the gates quicker than Anthony Goods, who emerged as the Cardinal s top scoring threat early in the year. During the opening weekend, Goods poured in a seasonhigh 23 points against UC Santa Barbara in the final game of the Basketball Travelers Classic. A pair of double-digit performances, coupled with a 9-17 clip from three-point territory, resulted in Goods being named MVP of the three-day tournament. Stanford s top threat from beyond the arc in , Goods knocked down a career-best 64 triples and finished the year averaging 10.0 points per game OUTLOOK COACHING STAFF PLAYER PROFILES OPPONENTS REVIEW TRADTION MAPLES PAVILION HISTORY AND HONORS RECORDS HOME OF CHAMPIONS 41

8 Led by first-year head coach Johnny Dawkins, this year s squad is set to usher in a new era of Stanford basketball. The following is a breakdown by class of where the Cardinal stands heading into the campaign. Seniors The Cardinal will surely benefit from a four-member senior class that collectively ranks as one of the best in the conference. Three of the four seniors were regular starters from last year s squad that finished 28-8 overall en route to the program s first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance since Mitch Johnson and Anthony Goods garnered All Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors last year for the first time in their careers. The Cardinal s floor general, Johnson started all but one game and is coming off a season in which he established career-highs in minutes played per game (31.5), scoring (6.7 ppg), rebounding (4.3 rpg) and assists (5.2 apg). Johnson enters this year ranked seventh on the all-time assists list. Goods emerged as the Cardinal s top scoring threat early on last year, pouring in a season-high 23 points against UC Santa Barbara to help Stanford capture the title at the Basketball Travelers Classic in November. Stanford s top shooter from beyond the arc in , Goods knocked down a career-best 64 triples and finished the year averaging 10.0 points per game. The 6-3 guard started 30 contests and will once again be counted on to provide perimeter scoring punch. The coaching staff is hoping Lawrence Hill can return to the form that earned him All Pac-10 honors as a sophomore. Hill played a key role during Stanford s successful run last year, thanks to his dependability (played in all 36 games) and versatility (started 23 contests). The 6-8 forward proved to be an effective option, averaging 8.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. His career-best 25-point performance against Yale was one of 13 double-digit scoring efforts on the year. Kenny Brown s decision to defer his admission to dental school one year provides an immediate boost to the Cardinal. Brown competed in 30 games last year, with all but one of those coming off the bench. Brown, who averaged 4.2 points per game last year, is a talented sharp-shooter from three-point territory with a knack for getting hot in big games. The 6-2 guard got his start with the Cardinal as a walk-on. Dawkins says: The main thing I hope our seniors can provide is leadership, from the standpoint that this year marks their fourth go-around through the Pac-10 and that experience is invaluable in a conference this tough. I expect them to lead us both on and off the floor and teach our underclassmen what it means to play for Stanford. Mitch is a true team leader and makes other guys around him better. Anthony has a nose for the ball and is an excellent perimeter defender while Lawrence is a versatile, experienced player with three-point range. Kenny is a solid combo guard who can help us on the perimeter with his shooting and defense. Juniors If the four seniors are the most proven and consistent among the returnees, then perhaps the two juniors are the most intriguing. Landry Fields and Drew Shiller possess the traits to be steady contributors to the Cardinal lineup and both displayed glimpses of such potential at times last season. An expanded role, along with the confidence and experience gained from last year s NCAA Tournament run, should accelerate their development. Fields was one of the Cardinal s most productive players during the summer Italy tour and then proved to Outlook Junior Landry Fields came off the bench in 33 games last year, averaging 4.1 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. be a valuable piece off the bench once the season began. Fields played in 33 games- all as a reserve- and averaged 3.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in just over 12 minutes per contest. The 6-7 forward/center was fifth on the squad with 22 three-pointers, and his size and athleticism gave the coaching staff added flexibility with matchups. A transfer from the University of San Francisco, Shiller provided the Cardinal with added depth in the backcourt. Shiller impressed last year as a sharp-shooter from all areas on the court: (46.5 percent) from three-point territory, (87.5 percent) from the foul line and (49 percent) from the floor. The 6-0 guard participated in 28 games as a reserve and averaged 3.3 points per game. His ability to catch fire and knock down multiple three-point shots in a short amount of time presents Stanford with a long-distance threat coming off the bench. Shiller should benefit from a new system that will maximize his scoring potential. Dawkins says: The key for both players is to build off their good performances last year and continue to work hard. Landry is very versatile and has a great understanding of the game. He continues to get stronger and I can see him being an impact player for us once he understands his role. Drew is a combo guard with deep range on his shot. Every team needs an accurate three-point shooter who can step in and consistently knock down shots and I believe he can help us greatly in this regard. Sophomores Two of the three sophomores on the roster are coming off redshirt seasons: Da Veed Dildy and Will Paul. Both will be given an opportunity to contribute after sitting out last year. Another sophomore, Josh Owens, has a chance to crack the starting lineup with a solid performance in the preseason. Dildy and Paul came off the bench during their freshman seasons, so both are excited and determined to get back on the court for the first time since One of eight guards on the roster, the 6-4 Dildy played in 11 games off the bench during his freshman season and was 3-8 from the field in 3.4 minutes of playing time Senior Lawrence Hill ranked fourth on the squad in scoring (8.6 ppg) and third in rebounding (4.8 rpg) last year. per contest. Paul made 17 appearances as a rookie, making 6-16 from the field in 5.7 minutes of action. He has bulked up in the offseason and at 6-10, 250, he is a logical low-post option for the Cardinal following the departures of Brook and Robin Lopez to the NBA. Owens participated in 18 games last year in limited playing time. The 6-8 forward/center posted a mark from the field, translating to 61.9 percent. After a year of gaining experience with one of the best frontlines in the nation, Owens should be ready to assume an increased workload. Dawkins says: For Da Veed and Will, missing a season is cause for a definite adjustment but so far these young men are making it. I see them both as contributors to our program and so far they have looked good after working hard over the summer and in the preseason. Da Veed is a high-energy, hard-working player who will be relied upon as a defensive stopper. Will is a versatile big with range to the three-point line and he possesses a good feel for the game. Josh is an athletic low post player who is strong inside and finishes well around the basket. Freshmen There are five freshmen on the roster: a pair of guards and three walk-on post players that stand 6-9 or taller. Jeremy Green (6-4) and Jarrett Mann (6-3) arrive on The Farm as true freshmen and will provide depth in the backcourt. Both come from winning programs and are capable of playing in the current system. The Cardinal will have some added depth in the frontcourt with walk-ons Elliott Bullock (6-10), Matei Daian (6-10) and Jack Trotter (6-9). Bullock is from Salt Lake City, Utah, while Trotter hails from nearby Moraga. Daian arrives on The Farm from Romania. Dawkins says: Jeremy is a pure shooter with good range. He can be an effective defender as well. Jarrett is a versatile perimeter player who can be used at multiple positions. Elliott and Matei are good around the basket and both possess a strong understanding of the game. Jack is a little more versatile, as he has the ability to step out and play on the perimeter or finish inside with both hands. 42
