More details are available on page 4. Lewis collected a slew of postseason honors. A consensus first-team All-American, Lewis earned that honor from ABCA/Rawlings, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger, D1Baseball.com, the NCBWA and Perfect Game. He was also named the national player of the year by the ABCA, Baseball America and the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby and won the Golden Spikes Award. Lewis also earned a spot on the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team for his spotless defense this year. After winning its league-record 10th SoCon Championship title, Western Carolina made its 12th postseason appearance and first since earning an at-large bid in The Catamounts fell to No. 7 national seed Clemson twice, sandwiched around a 4-1 win over Nebraska. First baseman Matt Smith and shortstop Brett Pope earned spots on the NCAA Clemson Regional all-tournament team. The Catamounts win over the Huskers gave the SoCon at least one win in NCAA Regional play for the 14th time in the last 16 years. Samford outfielder Heath Quinn was also a consensus All-American, earning either second- or third-team honors from six national organizations. ETSU s Trey York and Hagen Owenby, UNCG s Ben Spitznagel, Samford s Austin Edens and Western Carolina s Bryson Bowman also earned All-America honors from at least one of those organizations. A full listing of awards is available on page 5. VMI third baseman David Geary earned third-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and became only the third VMI baseball player ever to earn the honor. UNCG set a school record with 726 hits this season, good for 10th in SoCon history. The Spartans led NCAA Div. I with a.346 batting average. Will Gaddis, So., RHP Furman 10-3, 3.45 ERA, 92 K, 20 BB, IP MER Mercer s Lewis is a preseason All-American and a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, given annually to the top collegiate player. The junior from Snellville, Ga., is third in the league with a.395 average (15th nationally) and is second in RBIs with 72 (fourth) and one back of the league lead with 20 home runs (sixth). Lewis also leads the SoCon and ranks in the top 10 nationally with a.731 slugging percentage (fourth nationally), a.535 on-base percentage (fifth), 70 runs (second) and 66 walks, a total that leads the nation. Lewis helped Mercer to its second straight regular-season league title. FUR Furman s Gaddis posted a 3.45 ERA and a 10-3 record to lead the league in wins in a league-high 101 2/3 innings. The sophomore, who became just the fourth Paladin to reach double digits in wins and the first since Tom Mastny won 11 in 2003, struck out 92 batters against just 20 walks in his 15 starts, leading the league with a 4.60 strikeout-to-walk ratio. A twotime SoCon Pitcher of the Week selection this season, the right-hander from Brentwood, Tenn., helped the Paladins win their last four league series en route to a fourth-place SoCon finish. Gaddis 10 wins rank 12th nationally. SoCon Baseball
