1 Outlook DEPTH PERCEPTION IN After graduating four seniors, including two of the most decorated players in program history, Baylor will look to its young guns to provide leadership during the season. The Baylor men's golf team has its sights set on the NCAA Championship tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. The Bears, who have made 10 consecutive trips to the NCAA Regional, have struggled in postseason play qualifying for the NCAA Championships just once during that stretch. The goals that we set for ourselves this year are to put us in a position to win the Big 12 Championship, qualify for NCAA Regionals and then make it to the NCAA Championships, said head coach Greg Priest. For the past 10 years we have been able to make it to regionals, and now we want to take that next step. Though Baylor has qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament every season since 1998, the longest active postseason streak in the Baylor athletic program, the Bears only qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2002, the program s only national tournament appearance in the past 40 years. We want to go into the regional tournament with the mindset of winning the tournament, not just trying to qualify for nationals, said Priest. To qualify for nationals you have to finish in the top 10 at regionals. So we want to go into the NCAA Regionals not with the mindset having to finish in the top 10 to qualify for nationals, but with the mindset of wanting to win the tournament. In every other tournament, our goal is to win the tournament, so we are trying to bring that same mindset into regionals. For the Bears, team depth and leadership will be a concern. Baylor graduated two of the most experienced players in program history from last year's team. Jeremy Frye and Jeremy Alcorn rank second and third in Baylor history in rounds played, with 275 combined rounds to their credit. Alcorn also ranks third with 11 top-5 finishes and fourth with 17 top-10 finishes. Wes Williams is the only senior with significant playing experience on the squad. Last season, Williams led the Bears with a stroke average over 31 rounds, and Priest will look to Williams for leadership in the coming season. Priest also believes that younger players will have to mature quickly into leadership roles for the team to succeed. Wes Williams is going to be our leader this season, but after him we are really looking for someone else to step up and be a leader, said Priest. It will probably have to be a young guy who maybe doesn't have a lot of experience. We will look to Colton Williams and Bill Allcorn to step up into a leadership role on our team. Allcorn competed in eight events during his sophomore season with three top-12 finishes. His stroke average ranked fifth on the team during the SOPHOMORE COLTONON WILLIAMS SENIOR WES WILLIAMS season. Williams played in nine events as a redshirt freshman, finishing second on the team with a stroke average. Bill and Colton will need to be more consistent in their play, said Priest. We are really trying to get those guys used to playing in the top three spots on our team, and they are used to playing in the fourth or fifth spot. We are counting on the one, two and three guys to go out every day and get the job done, so they will need to elevate their game. Along with Allcorn and Williams, freshman Cody Paladino has shown promise through the fall season with four top-12 finishes and a team-leading stroke average. Paladino finished as the runner-up at the 2007 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Cody played really well in the fall and put himself in position to win three golf tournaments, said Priest. Unfortunately he wasn't able to pull one off, but he is really close to winning one. He's only a freshman, but he will be a leader on this team because of the way he plays. Competition for the remaining spots for tournament play should be wide open, with several players in the hunt. Senior Brian Meck has the most experience with 15 events and 45 rounds to his credit. Junior Carmine Mediate has played in eight career events and has logged 22 total rounds, while sophomores Jeff Gerlich and Weldon Martin will also battle for playing time. Team performance always comes down to experience, and the only way that you can get experience is to play rounds, said Priest. The more our guys play the better they will get. Some of the guys will need to step up and take advantage of the opportunity when they get it. A talented freshman class will also look to break into the starting five for Baylor this season. Redshirt freshman Michael McKinley gained valuable experience last season, while true freshmen Jeff Campbell, Neal Robinson and Lorenzo Scotto are also eager to see tournament competition. I think we have about seven or eight guys who can step up their game and I would feel comfortable having them in the lineup, said Priest. So we could see several different combinations of players in those last two spots on the team. The Bears have several familiar tournaments on their spring schedule, with a return trip to the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate where Baylor tied for the team title last season. The Bears will also compete at Border Olympics and the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational. We are playing in several tournaments that we played in last season, said Priest. You always want to play in the best tournaments that you can to prepare for the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA tournaments.we are playing a lot of good courses with good competition, so we can get our guys used to playing in competitive situations. 5
