THE SERIES The Buckeyes are undefeated against Cincinnati, holding an all-time record of 5-0 against the Bearcats. A LOOK AT CINCINNATI Cincinnati comes into the matchup with a 2-1 record. The Bearcats dropped their season opener to Louisville, but rattled off two straight wins against Gardner-Webb and Winthrop. McKenna Rushford leads Cincinnati with 17 points from 10 goals and seven assists. She also has a team-high 12 draw controls Monica Borzillo ranks second on the squad with 14 points from nine goals and five assists. Sam Mlkvy has scooped up a team-high eight ground balls. She is tied for third on the team in points with seven, and has eight draw controls as well. Giuliana Durso has started all three games in net for Cincinnati and has 25 saves this season. BUCKEYES DROP OVERTIME THRILLER AT JACKSONVILLE The Buckeyes gave the Jacksonville University Dolphins all they could handle on Friday night before falling in overtime. OSU held an 8-6 lead in the first half before a 5-0 run from JU sent Ohio State into halftime trailing OSU used a 6-to-2 run over the first 20 minutes of the second half to take a lead with 10:33 to play. With three minutes left in regulation the Buckeyes led 15-14, but two goals from the Dolphins gave Jacksonville a lead with less than a minute to play. As time was running out Sara Dickinson charged the net, firing a diving shot into the back of the JU net with 2.2 seconds to play, tying the game at The late game momentum would not last, however, as the Buckeyes fell in overtime Liza Hernandez led the Buckeyes with five goals, her second consecutive five-goal game. She also came away with four draw controls and scooped up two ground balls. McKayla Conti tallied four points from two goals and two assists, and she caused one turnover. Baley Parrott finished with three goals, four draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Both Lauren Sherry and Lindsay Epstein scored two goals each. OSU CRUISES TO HOME WIN AGAINST DETROIT The Buckeyes used a balanced offensive effort as they cruised to victory over Detroit, 20-5 on Feb. 16. Eleven different players scored, led by Liza Hernandez s five goals. Hernandez also scooped three ground balls and caused two turnovers. McKayla Conti scored four goals of her own and tallied an assist. Molly Wood came away with eight draw controls while scoring a goal and notching one caused turnover. Sara Dickinson finished with five points from her two goals and game high three assists. Erika Keselman rounded out the Buckeyes that scored multiple goals, hanging two on the scoreboard. Baley Parrott, Lindsay Epstein, Sage Darling, Meghan Matey, Anna Seanor and Alyssa Amorison all scored one goal each. A smothering defensive performance led to six different players causing turnovers, led by Caroline Mackrides three caused turnovers. Hernandez and Shannon Rosati had a pair of caused turnovers each while Wood, Madison Castelein and Regina Doty all tallied one caused turnover each. Mackrides also finished with a game high five ground balls. HERNANDEZ POSTS CAREER HIGH AGAINST TITANS Liza Hernandez put on a show last Friday in the Woody, scoring a game high five goals as the Buckeyes cruised to a 20-5 win over Detroit. The sophomore came up with three ground balls and two caused turnovers as well. As a freshman, Hernandez was on pace for a fantastic first year before her season ended due to injury after nine games. Her previous career high of four points came against Cincinnati last February. SECOND HALF RALLY COMES UP SHORT AT NO. 10 NAVY ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS WLAX SID... Johns Hopkins Loyola (MD) , Stanford , Virginia Tech NR 2018 opponents in Bold The Buckeyes had their work cut out for them in their season opener on a rain soaked afternoon at No. 10 Navy. Ohio State struck first when Sara Dickinson found the back of the net just 2:20 into the game. A quick 5-0 run from the Midshipmen put OSU on the ropes, trailing 5-1 with 15:49 left in the first. Liza Hernandez ended the run with a goal, and Baley Parrott scored to cut the lead to two with 7:11 to play in the half. Navy scored again before time expired to make it 6-3 at halftime. Molly Wood opened the scoring in the second half, once again cutting the lead to two. Navy scored two consecutive goals to push the lead back to four, but the Buckeyes would not go quietly into defeat. Dickinson scored again to chip away at the lead, and after Navy scored its final goal with 21:11 to play, OSU kicked things into high gear. Parrott and Hernandez scored to bring the Buckeyes within two, but time ran out on the Ohio State rally as the Buckeyes fell by score of 9-7. Parrott led the way for OSU with three points, three draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Wood led the team with four draw controls. RIZZO HAS A CAREER NIGHT AGAINST NO. 10 NAVY Sophomore goaltender Jill Rizzo wasted no time in breaking one of her own records, making a career high 17 saves against Navy on February 10. Rizzo's goaltending was instrumental to the Buckeyes remaining competitive until the bitter end in their season opener. After making three saves in the opening moments of the game, the Midshipmen went on a 5-0 run to take control of the game early in the first half. Rizzo regained her composure and held Navy to only one goal over the last 15 minutes of the first half, allowing Ohio State to cut the deficit to three before halftime, 6-3. Navy scored three more goals in the first nine minutes of the half, but Rizzo figured out their attack and held them scoreless for the last 21:11 of the game as the Buckeyes mounted a rally that came up a little short in a 9-7 loss. Rizzo made nine saves in the first half, and eight in the second as the steady rain transitioned into a downpour in Annapolis. Her previous high came last season against Harvard where she made 14 saves. MOLLY WOOD CLOSING IN ON HISTORY Senior Molly Wood comes into the 2018 season just 34 draw controls away from being the all-time program leader. After tallying 38 draw controls as a freshman, Wood tied the single season record with 79 draw controls in her sophomore season. Proving that her record setting season was no fluke, Wood came away with 71 draw controls as a junior in 2017, bringing her career total to 188. Katie Chase holds the current record of 221 draw controls. HENDRICK JOINS COACHING STAFF Head coach Alexis Venechanos announced the addition of Molly Hendrick to her staff as an assistant coach in January. Hendrick finished her playing career at North Carolina in 2017 as one of the best players in program history. She was a two-time All- American and three-time All-ACC honoree, ending her career with 186 goals and 220 points, which both rank among the highest totals for a Tar Heel. In 2017 she set school records with 72 goals and 83 points en route to being named the 2017 ACC Attacker of the Year. As a junior in 2016 Hendrick led her team with 10 goals during the NCAA Tournament, including three in a 13-7 victory over Maryland to capture the national championship. Hendrick s career took off from day one in Chapel Hill. As a freshman she started all 20 games for the Tar Heels, earning 33 draw controls and accumulating five multi-goal games. She was named to Inside Lacrosse s 2014 All-Rookie Team for her efforts, the first of three IL postseason honors she would receive in her career. Off the field, Hendrick frequently participated in North Carolina s Leadership Lab, a leadership training program for student-athletes. Over the course of their careers student-athletes receive authentic leadership development training, undertake project management, draft a rudimentary business plan, receive internship/work experience, go through a project incubator, perform community outreach, present a scaled-down thesis proposal and defense, and benchmark leadership development best practices. All that, combined with her dominant playing career, makes her a perfect candidate to help lead the Buckeyes as an assistant coach. BUCKEYES TO FACE STIFF COMPETITION IN 2018 The Buckeyes announced their 2018 schedule in December, with six NCAA qualifiers, and three of the final four teams from last season comprising the challenging slate. This season sees Ohio State trying to make some noise in the always crowed Big Ten, with three conference opponents ranked in the preseason top 10 (No. 1 Maryland, No. 4 Penn State, No. 9 Northwestern) Notable non-conference games include the season opener at No. 10 Navy and a neutral site contest against No. 18 UMass. 3 TRIO OF BUCKEYES EARN BIG TEN PRESEASON HONORS The Big Ten conference announced its 2018 Big Ten Women s Lacrosse preseason honors, with three Buckeyes earning recognition from the league s head coaches. Those three individuals include a senior leader in Molly Wood, and a pair of impact sophomores in Liza Hernandez and Jill Rizzo. Wood has started 52 of 54 career games in her first three seasons. Last season Wood led the team with 71 draw controls, bringing her career total to 188, just 34 shy of the all-time program record. Wood also led the team with 48 points from 42 goals and six assists. She also scooped up 20 ground balls for the season. Hernanadez started the first nine games of the season before suffering a season ending injury. Even in a shortened season, Hernandez finished third on the team in points with 34. Her 13 assists came in at second on the team, while her 21 goals were third. Rizzo served as the primary goaltender for the Buckeyes as a freshman last season. She notched 183 saves on the year and finished the season leading the Big Ten in saves-per-game. She was also tied for the conference lead in ground balls per game in 2017, as her 51 ground balls paced the Buckeyes. Nationally, Rizzo finished 10th in the NCAA for overall saves, and eighth in the nation in saves-pergame. 5 ALEXIS VENECHANOS HEAD COACH EIGHTH SEASON, MARYLAND 03 Alexis Venechanos is starting her eighth season at the helm of the Ohio State women s lacrosse team and has turned the program into one of the nation s best during her tenure. She has amassed a record of at Ohio State and a career record of as a head coach. She was named the program s second head coach on July 1, 2010, after spending four years as the head coach at Massachusetts following a three-year stint as assistant coach Northwestern and a successful playing career at Maryland. A winner on every level, Venechanos (pronounced: ven-eh-chan-ohs) has been a part of four NCAA titles (as a player and coach) and a total of eight conference championships and she has now brought those winning ways to Ohio State. In 2016 Venechanos led a relatively young squad to an 11-6 mark, narrowly missing out on a program-record third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, and posted double-digit wins for the third consecutive season a first for the program. Ohio State also set program records with its 11-1 start to the season, a nine-game winning streak and a No. 8 national ranking in the Inside Lacrosse Top 20 poll. The senior class also recorded 45 wins over its four years, tying for the most all-time with the 2015 seniors. Venechanos also reached the 100-career win milestone with the Buckeyes 18-8 win at Hofstra. Following the season, three Buckeyes were named All-Big Ten: Cian Dabrowski, Christina Turner and Shannon Rosati. Dabrowski also was named to the IWLCA First Team All-West/Midwest Region team, the ninth first team selection for Ohio State since 2011 and the 18th overall in that span under Venechanos. Ohio State turned in another outstanding season in 2015, finishing 13-8 overall and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and for the fourth time in program history. The 13 wins tied for the second-most wins in school history with the 2014 squad. The Buckeyes also finished No. 15 in the final IWLCA Top 20 poll, marking the second consecutive year finishing in the Top 15. The 2015 season also marked the inaugural season of women s lacrosse in the Big Ten. And the Buckeyes wasted little time leaving their mark, advancing all the way to the Big Ten Tournament championship game. On the way to the championship, Ohio State pulled off arguably the biggest win in program history, knocking off No. 1-ranked and previously undefeated Maryland, The victory snapped a 27-game win streak by the Terrapins and gave Ohio State its first win over a No. 1-ranked team in program history. Individual recognition followed, and rightfully so. Four Buckeyes were named to the inaugural All-Big Ten team: Jackie Cifarelli, Kate Chase, Jennifer Porretto and Taylor Donahue. Highlighting the All-Big Ten honorees were Chase and Cifarelli, who were also named to the IWLCA All-Region and Big Ten All-Tournament teams. They also were teammates at the IWLCA North/ South All-Star game. Donahue joined them on the All- Region team. The season also had it s share of memorable and record-breaking moments. Chase set a school singleseason record with 59 goals and finished her career as Ohio State s all-time leader with 221 draw controls and finished second on Ohio State s all-time goals list with 162. Cifarelli ranked first in the Big Ten and second in the NCAA with 2.6 assists per game and finished her career as the all-time assists leader with the third most in NCAA history. She eclipsed the 250-career point mark in the Big Ten Tournament and finished second all-time in the Ohio State record book. Senior goalkeeper Tori DeScenza ended her career as Ohio State s all-time leader with 43 wins and 569 saves. But the team not only shined on the field, but off it as well, placing 19 student-athletes on the academic All-Big Ten list for having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, the most of any spring sport at Ohio State. In addition, nine Buckeyes were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for having at least a 3.7 GPA in throughout the academic year, the most of any Ohio State sport. The team also was named an Academic Honor Squad by the IWLCA, an honor bestowed upon any team who has a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.0 or higher for the academic year. In 2014, the Buckeyes finished the 2014 campaign with a 13-7 overall record with a 4-2 mark in ALC play, ending the year with a No. 13 national ranking by the IWLCA -- the second-best finish in school history. It was a year to remember for the Scarlet and Gray as the Buckeyes earned their first trip to the NCAA tournament in 11 years and recorded the second-most wins in school history. Ohio State also advanced to its fourthconsecutive ALC tournament semifinal and posted a program-record nine home victories. In addition, Ohio State defeated back-to-back Top 10 opponents for the first time while the 2014 seniors set a then-ohio State class wins record with 42 career wins. Prior to her arrival in Columbus, Venechanos spent four seasons at UMass where she inherited a UMass program in August 2006 that had not been to the NCAA tournament in over 20 years. Within three seasons, she took the Minutewomen back to the postseason for the first time in a quarter century. They went on to make a second consecutive NCAA trip in 2010, punctuating a career already marked by a pair of Atlantic 10 championship tournament titles (2009, 2010), an Atlantic 10 VENECHANOS YEAR-BY-YEAR regular-season title (2009) and three appearances in the A-10 Tournament championship game. In all, Venechanos registered an overall record of 36-38, including double-digit wins in each of the last two years, an Atlantic 10 regular-season record of and an A-10 tournament record of 5-1. Prior to taking over the program at UMass, Venechanos served as the first assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northwestern for the seasons, helping the Wildcats to the first two of five-consecutive national championships. They posted a 56-4 record during that span, winning 93 percent of their games, including a 41-1 record in her last two years. Venechanos primarily mentored the goalies and defense at Northwestern, placing the defensive unit among the nation s best. In her final season in 2006, the Wildcats led the nation in scoring margin and were in the Top 5 in scoring defense, all with a rookie goalie. In the undefeated season of 2005, Venechanos tutored NU goalkeeper Ashley Gersuk as she posted the NCAA-best GAA and earned ALC Goalie of the Year honors, while helping the team become the top scoring defense in the nation. As a player, Venechanos was an All-America goalie at the University of Maryland, the winningest women s lacrosse program of all-time, where she captured two national championships in 2000 and The Terps went 73-15, an 83 percent win mark, during her four seasons in College Park, including a 23-0 mark in 2001, Venchanos first as starting goalie. As a senior captain in 2003, Venechanos was the recipient of the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Award, given to the nation s top goalkeeper. She also was a consensus first team All-American, as well as first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and ACC Tournament MVP. Despite playing the second half of the season with a torn ACL, Venechanos posted 164 saves vs. 121 goals allowed and was in the Top 10 nationally in both save percentage (.575) and goals-against average (6.62). In addition, Venechanos assumed the role of head coach of the Canadian national team in 2011 and led them to the Gold Medal game of the 2013 World Cup, marking the first time the Canadians advanced beyond the semifinals.
