With Monday's win over Little Rock, the Toreros became just the third USD men's basketball team to start 4-0 since moving to the NCAA Division I ranks in On Saturday USD meets up with tournament host Grand Canyon University (4-0), ranked 25th in the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. Both teams are now 3-0 in Grand Canyon Classic round-robin play with the series' final game at GCU Arena on Saturday, November 25th, at 6:00 p.m. (PST). SERIES RECORD: This is the 21st meeting between USD and Grand Canyon University with the Antelopes leading This is just the second meeting during USD's Division I era with the Toreros winning the second game of the campaign at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, GCU leads 6-2 in games played in Phoenix, Arizona. RADIO/TV: All USD home and away games will be broadcast on either The Mighty 1090AM or ESPN 1700AM with Jack Cronin (4th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game show airs 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Saturday's game will air on ESPN 1700AM with Ben Higgins filling in for Jack Cronin. The game is also being televised and will air live in San Diego on YurView (Barry Buetel, play-by-play; Scott Williams, color anaylst; Kate Longworth, sideline reporter), as well as stream on ESPN3. WCC STANDINGS (as of Nov. 21): San Diego (4-0), Saint Mary's (4-0), Gonzaga (3-0), BYU (3-1), San Francisco (3-1), LMU (2-1), Portland (2-1), Pepperdine (2-3), Santa Clara (1-2), Pacific (1-3). WCC PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The Toreros were picked to place sixth by the WCC head coaches in the Preseason WCC Coaches Poll. Saint Mary's was selected first with 81 points and 9 first place votes. Rounding out the top-5 was Gonzaga (73 points, 1 first place vote), BYU (62 points), San Francisco (59 points) and Santa Clara (44 points). Following San Diego is Pepperdine (30 points), Pacific (24 points), Portland (21 points) and Loyola Marymount (19 points). HEAD COACH LAMONT SMITH (3RD YEAR): Coach Lamont Smith (San Diego, 1998) is in his third year at the helm of the Torero basketball program. The team's current 4-0 start marks just the third time is the best since the campaign (5-0) He welcomes back four starters from last year's squad that finished overall. The Toreros earned a home victory over BYU and swept Portland during league play. Brett Bailey, last year's lone senior and team captain, earned All-WCC Second Team honors. Prior to USD Smith was at the University of New Mexico where he was the Associate Head Coach. Prior to UNM he spent time at Washington, Arizona State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's College and Saint Louis University. Smith returned to USD where he was a member of the men's basketball team from He started all 27 games his senior year in for the 18-9 Toreros. He was named the Toreros' Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain from Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of San Diego in Lamont and his wife Kimberly have two daughters -- Payton and Olivia. A LOOK AHEAD: The Toreros return to host crosstown rival San Diego State on Thursday, November 30th. Isaiah Wright paced the Toreros with a game-high 17 points to go with 8 rebounds and 6 assists... He was joined in double-digit scoring by Yauhen Massalski (11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks) and Alex Floresca (10 points)... The Torero defense held the Colonials to 53 points and 33.3% shooting (18-54) and came out on top in the rebounding department (44-32). * The Toreros opened the season with an impressive road win over San Jose State on November 12th... Junior guard Isaiah Wright (22 points, 7 assists, 5 steals) led four Toreros in double digit scoring... He was followed by Olin Carter III (18), Cameron Neubauer (13) and Isaiah Pineiro (13 and team-high 6 rebounds)... Freshman forward Yauhen Massalski chipped in 8 points and 4 rebounds as USD shot 57.4% from the field (31-54) and 52.9% from beyond the arc (9-17)... USD led at the halftime break. * USD junior guard Isaiah Wright (Boise, Idaho) was named the WCC men's basketball player of the week (Nov. 13). Wright paced four Toreros in double digit scoring with a game-high 22 points to go with 7 assists and 5 steals in leading San Diego to an road win over San Jose State. Wright made 9-of-13 shots overall (69.2%) and was 2-2 from beyond the arc. He scored eight of the team s first 10 points as USD jumped out to a 10-5 advantage. At halftime with the Toreros leading 51-29, he had 17 points on 7-8 shooting to go with 4 assists and 4 steals. * The Toreros return four starters (20 or more starts) from last year's club: junior guard Olin Carter, III (15.3 ppg), senior forward Cameron Neubauer (11.0 ppg), sophomore forward Juwan Gray (7.2 ppg) and junior guard Tyler Williams (6.7 ppg). * Carter was named to the Preseason All-WCC team... He ranks second among WCC returning scorers behind Jock Landale of Saint Mary's (16.9 ppg). * A trio of juniors have been selected by the coaching staff and teammates to be team captains this season: guard Olin Carter III (Allen, TX), guard Tyler Williams (Plano, TX) and guard Isaiah Wright (Boise, ID). * Last season Carter (92) and Neubauer (49) combined to make 141 three-pointers... In their most recent outing against Norfolk State, sophomore forward Oscar Frayer paced the Antelopes with 19 points to lead four players in double digits... Through four games redshirt senior guard Joshua Braun is the team's leading scorer at 16.8 ppg (13-27 in threes,.481)... He is followed by senior guard Casey Benson (11.5) and Frayer (11.3)... Head Coach Dan Majerle is in his 5th season... Associate Head Coach Todd Lee (5th year) is a former Torero assistant ( ) to Hank Egan... The Lopes' are averaging 7,080 fans per game through four home contests. TORERO TIDBITS CONTINUED: * The Toreros have added size to the roster in with the addition of four freshmen 6'10 or taller: 7'0" center Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Australia), 6'11" center Akim-Jamal Jonah (Berlin, Germany), 6'10" forward Yauhen Massalski (Minsk, Belarus) and 6'10" Jake Gilliam (San Diego, Calif.). Ferguson and Jonah, along with freshman guard Joey Calcaterra (Novato, Calif.), will sit out the season as redshirts. * USD has a new radio deal this season with all games airing on the Mighty 1090AM or ESPN 1700 AM. Jack Cronin, voice of the Toreros, returns for his 4th season. Ten games will air on the Mighty 1090AM: SDSU (Nov. 30), New Mexico State (Dec. 6), Saint Mary's (Jan. 6), LMU (Jan. 13), BYU (Jan. 20), LMU (Jan 27), Gonzaga (Feb. 1), Saint Mary's (Feb. 3), BYU (Feb. 17) and Gonzaga (Feb. 22). The remaining games will be on ESPN 1700AM. * Two new staff members join the Toreros this season. Assistant coach Terrence Rencher comes to USD from the University of New Mexico. Lance LaVetter, Director of Operations, was an assistant coach at Seattle University the past three seasons, and was at the University of Washington as Director of Operations with Lorenzo Romar for twelve seasons. * The Toreros are partnering with Fox Sports San Diego to televise three games this season. The first contest was Norfolk State on Nov. 18th. The San Diego State game on Nov. 30th has been pushed back to an 8:00 p.m. start with the game being broadcast on Fox Sports West. The third contest will be on Dec. 9th against Northern Arizona (FSSD). * The USD Toreros hosted the Arizona State Sun Devils in a charity exhibition on November 1st. All of the funds raised from tickets went to Catholic Charities, USA toward relief efforts in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria. Arizona State held on for an win in a competitive game that was closer than the final score. In the first half the Sun Devils took a lead into the intermission break. Junior guard Olin Carter III paced three Toreros in double-digit scoring with 19 points. He was followed by Isaiah Pineiro (15 points, 7 rebounds) and Cameron Neubauer (14 points). Jose Martinez, a sophomore forward from Puerto Rico, turned in some quality play with 8 points and 4 rebounds in 11 minutes of action. ASU had four players reach double-digits with guards Remy Martin (25 points) and Tra Holder (21 points) leading the way. * Last season Olin Carter III totaled 34 points in a win over Bethesda on Dec. 17th... His point total matched two other Toreros and has only been bettered by five others in program history... USD's Division I record is 37 points (three players) and the all-time mark is 40 by Robert "Pinky" Smith in 1972). On Nov. 22, 2016, Juwan Gray pulled down 17 rebounds to go with 16 points vs. Bethune-Cookman. USD's Div. I record is 21 (Robby Roberts, 1982 vs. NAU) and the all-time mark is 24 by Gus Magee (1969 vs. Trinity). * The Toreros will miss the services of graduated senior forward Brett Bailey who led the squad in scoring (15.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg) while earning All-WCC Second Team honors. * The University of San Diego athletic department is pleased to announce that three-game mini-packs are now available for purchase for the upcoming men's basketball season. One $60 mini-pack includes the Nov. 30 game against crosstown rival San Diego State, along with the choice of two other games (excludes Gonzaga) in November, December or January. The second $60 mini-pack includes our Feb. 22 game with Gonzaga along with two additional games (excludes SDSU) in November, December or January. 4 JACK CRONIN BACK AS USD'S VOICE OF TORERO MEN'S BASKETBALL Jack Cronin will be the play-by-play voice for Toreros men's basketball this season with games airing on the Mighty 1090AM and ESPN 1700 AM. Cronin returns for his fourth year as Voice of Toreros Basketball. Cronin is in his 11th year as the play-by-play announcer for University of San Diego Football, and was the #2 voice for USD Men's Basketball for seven years prior to his appointment three seasons ago. In he began working for TheW. tv calling volleyball and soccer games. He is also in his 10th year calling football, basketball, baseball, softball, track & field, water polo and volleyball on television for Spectrum and the SPEC SportsNet. Cronin graduated in 2004 from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Integrative Biology. Beginning with the quarterfinal matchups on March 3rd, the evening session games will be televised on ESPN2. The WCC Basketball Championship semifinals on Monday, March 5th, will air on either ESPN or ESPN2. 6 MEET THE TOREROS... 0 Isaiah Pineiro F R-JR/RS Auburn, CA/Placer (Portland State) Isaiah Pineiro, a 6-7 wing from Auburn, California, sat out the campaign after transferring in from Portland State. Coming off a 20 point, 7 rebound, 4 assist and 4 steal effort against Little Rock. Turned in a 14 point - 7 rebound game vs. Norfolk State. Opened with 13 points & 6 rebounds in win at SJSU. In he played in all 31 games while totaling 19 starts. He finished with averages of 12.0 points per game and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 50.7 percent from the field ( ) and 76.3 percent from the free throw line (90-118). He will sit out the campaign as a redshirt. Ferguson attended the prestigious Australian Center of Excellence, formerly the Australian Institute of Sport. The Center of Excellence is a feeder program to all of Australia s Olympic Sports. He was a member of the 2016 Australian Under 18 National Team, which participated in the Albert Schweitzer Tournament (mini basketball World Cup) held in Manheim, Germany. He also played on the 2016 Emerging Boomers Tour Team that traveled to China. This team was for future Olympic hopefuls. He also represented Western Australia at the Under 20 Australian National Championships. This past season he played his club basketball for the Lakeside Lightning in the Western Australian State Basketball League.
