That was head coach Marvin Lewis directive to his team still in first place in the AFC North Division after last week s loss at New England. It was Cincinnati s first loss in four outings, but as Lewis also noted, We all got our noses rubbed in it a little bit in this one. And now, the Bengals agree, it s time to learn a lesson from the Patriots, who came back with a dominant performance after suffering a road defeat in their previous game, at Kansas City. Cincinnati faces a 3-2 Carolina club this week at Paul Brown Stadium, seeking to extend what is currently a franchiserecord streak of 11 straight regular-season victories at home. New England got their teeth kicked in and came back with their best effort, said OT Andrew Whitworth. They came out at the start and wanted it more than we did, I guess. That s on us, there s no excuse for that, but if we want to be a championship team, how we respond is going to be more important than what happened against the Patriots. It s a battle of division leaders on tap this week at PBS, and only one will get the win they likely will need to stay alone at the top. The 3-1 Bengals lead the AFC North by a half-game over both Baltimore and Pittsburgh, and the 3-2 Panthers lead the NFC South by one game over Atlanta and New Orleans. Carolina comes off a comeback win at home against Chicago. The win ended a two-game losing streak, against Bengals division rivals Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Both the Bengals and Panthers have been good in the crucial area of turnover differential, Carolina ranking tied for sixth at plus-four and the Bengals ranking tied for ninth at plus-three. The Bengals at 3-0 were the last unbeaten team remaining in the NFL when they lined up at New England last Sunday night. An early shot at dominance in the American Conference seemed to be theirs. Asked about the pain of losing that, QB Andy Dalton said: Sure, it s disappointing, but it s one game. We re for sure not the only team to have one bad game just look at New England and we re still on top in the division. Bottom line, that s where you want to be sitting at the end of any week. Everything s in front of us if we regroup and go take care of it, so there s still that chance (to emerge as the AFC s Super Bowl favorite). It s still just so early. We just have to look at ourselves and find a way to get better. Multiple NFL teams have struggled with week-to-week consistency in the first five weeks of the season. New England, Green Bay, Buffalo, Indianapolis and Detroit come to mind, among others. Asked to comment on that trend, GAME NOTES WEEK 6, GAME 5 SUNDAY, OCT. 12 AT PAUL BROWN STADIUM UP NEXT: WEEK 7, GAME 6 OCT. 19 AT INDIANAPOLIS Bengals coach Lewis said: I really have no idea. What I do know is that if you turn the ball over and don t convert third downs, you re going to have a real hard time winning. The Bengals had three lost fumbles at New England and finished minusthree in turnover differential. During their 3-0 start, they had surged to an NFLleading plus-six in differential. On third down at New England, Cincinnati was a dismal zero-for-seven. Entering New England, the Bengals had been a very respectable 13-for-27. I believe we have a very good and very tough team, Lewis said, but we never thought we were going to go through a whole season without facing some adversity. That doesn t mean this doesn t hurt, but there are no words that will fix that. Our actions will fix it, and that starts right away this week as we get ready for a very good Carolina team. We look at what happened, we figure out what went wrong, and we go about fixing it. I don t have any doubt about the resiliency of this team and our ability to do that. It s not like we just walked our way into the playoffs the last three seasons. We had to fight our way through some tough times every year to get there, and we ll do it again. Though the Bengals were soundly beaten at New England in all phases, it s their defense which is likely to enter the Carolina game with the biggest chip on the shoulder. A unit that has ranked among the NFL s best the last few seasons and which ranked first in opponent scoring average prior to last week was burned by the Patriots for 505 yards while giving up 40 points for the first time since the 2012 season opener. 40 points... as a defense, that just really hurts, said NT Domata Peko. We ve got to look at it and fix it. It ll be good to be back in The Jungle this week. No doubt this was hard to take, said CB Leon Hall, but it s not the end of the world We ll get it fixed. We ll make it right. This week, Carolina coming to town, it s a big week. In the NFL, each week usually is just that. The series: The Bengals and Panthers have played only four times and have split 2-2. The Bengals lost the first two but have pulled even with wins of at home in 2006 and 20-7 at Carolina in The Bengals 2006 win was the only game thus far to be played in Cincinnati. Carolina did not begin play until 1995, and even after this week s game, the Panthers will be the Bengals least-played NFL opponent at five. The franchise the Bengals have played the next-fewest times is the Houston Texans (eight), and of course the Bengals played Houston clubs numerous other times, when the Oilers were in that city. The Panthers also have the fewest visits to Cincinnati (one) of any NFL club, and they ll remain the least-seen visitor after this week. The teams with the nextfewest Cincinnati visits are the Texans, Bears and Eagles, each with four. The Panthers also have played in Cincinnati once in preseason. 2 (Game notes, continued) The last meetings: Summaries of the two most recent Bengals- Panthers meetings at Cincinnati in 2006 and at Carolina in 10 are on page 16 of this news release. Driving toward a dozen: The Bengals this week seek their 12th consecutive regular-season victory at Paul Brown Stadium. Their current streak of 11 is already a franchise record. It began with the last home game of 2012 and has continued through an 8-0 run in 2013 and a 2-0 start this season. There s no question we re starting to create this as a tough place to come win, says OT Andrew Whitworth. We have a lot of pride and resolve in protecting our home turf, and offenses are struggling to play well here because not only do we have a great defense, the atmosphere is loud and it affects your calls and makes it hard when you want to get the ball out quick. I like it that every single team has to worry about coming into a tough environment, and they ve also got to play us. Prior to the current run of 11, the longest Bengals regular-season winning streak was 10, covering the full 1988 season and the first two games of The Bengals actually won 12 straight at home (Riverfront Stadium) over , but two of those were 1988 playoff wins, and playoffs are a separate category in official NFL record-keeping. The current team s overall home win streak was interrupted by a 2013 home playoff loss to San Diego. The Bengals have not lost at home in the regular season since falling by one point (20-19) to Dallas on Dec. 9, Seven straight thumpings: The Bengals not only have won their last 11 regular-season home games (see previous item), they haven t broken much of a fourth-quarter sweat in the last seven of those. The closest any of the last seven visitors have come has been 14 points, and there have been margins of 40, 28 and 21. The average victory margin over the seven games has been Here s a full recap of the record 11-game streak: DATE OPPONENT SCORE COMMENT Baltimore Bengals win despite yards deficit Pittsburgh Win on MNF after halftime tie Green Bay Bengals led 14-0, then trailed New England 13-6 Pats held to 1-for-12 on third down N.Y. Dalton has a 10-3 record against NFC clubs, a winning percentage of.769. His three losses have come by a total of 12 points, and his 10 wins have come by an average margin of He has thrown for 10 TDs against NFC teams since the NFC s last interception against him. Bengals, Records vs. Panthers: Carolina s 52 points in its victory over the Bengals in 2002 stand as the most ever allowed by Cincinnati in a game, and Steve Smith s 153 punt return yards in that game (on three returns) is also a Bengals opponents record. A point on point yields: Though the previous item notes Carolina s opponent-record 52 points against the Bengals in 2002, there s a positive side to that mark for Cincinnati. The Bengals are among only seven NFL teams to never allow more than 52 in a game, and among the other six, five are franchises that have operated for significantly fewer seasons than Cincinnati s 47. Baltimore (19 seasons) and Houston (13) are at 49 for highest yield. Jacksonville (20 seasons) is at 50, and Seattle (39 seasons) is at 51. Even with the Bengals in this category at 52 are Carolina (20 seasons) and New England (54). They re tough with turnovers: Since 2003, when Marvin Lewis took over as Cincinnati head coach, the Bengals rank tied for fifth in the NFL in turnover differential, at plus-40. And the team they re tied with is Carolina. Under Lewis, the Bengals have reversed their fortunes in turnover differential. Prior to Lewis tenure, the Bengals had posted a minus turnover differential for five straight years ( ). Since 03, NFL teams with just a plus-one differential have won 69.3 percent of their games. At plus two the percentage has been Teams with any plus have won at a 79.8 percent clip. Panthers T Garry Williams (Reserve/Injured) played at the University of Kentucky Marvin Lewis in 2014 extends his Bengals record for head coaching tenure to 12 seasons. He has led the team to the postseason in four of the last five years, including three straight. The Bengals are one of only five NFL teams to be in the playoffs every year since 2011, and they are one of only six clubs to qualify as many as four times in the last five years. In total, Lewis has coached five Bengals playoff teams, also a franchise record. Paul Brown is second in the category, with three. Lewis has 93 career victories, most in Bengals history by a margin of 29 over Sam Wyche (64). Lewis record is in the regular season and including postseason. The Bengals went 11-5 in the regular season in 2013, winning the AFC North Division championship by three games over both Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Cincinnati lost in the first round of the playoffs, however, falling to San Diego at Paul Brown Stadium. Last year s division title was Cincinnati s third under Lewis. In a 2009 title season in which the Bengals swept all six division games, Lewis was the consensus choice as NFL Coach of the Year. Lewis also led Cincinnati to an AFC North title in Lewis ranks second in the NFL in longest current tenure with one team, trailing only Bill Belichick, who is in his 15th straight season with New England. In the category of most seasons as an NFL head coach with one or more teams, Lewis in 2014 ranks sixth among active coaches, behind Belichick (20th season in 2014), Jeff Fisher (20), Tom Coughlin (19), the Chiefs Andy Reid (16) and John Fox (13). Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on Jan. 14, In 02, he directed the NFL s fifth-ranked defense with Washington, serving as assistant head coach in addition to his role as defensive coordinator. Prior to his year with the Redskins, he was a record-setting defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. His six seasons with the Ravens ( ) included a Super Bowl victory following the 00 season. In the 00 season, Lewis Baltimore defense set the NFL record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game campaign (165), and the 00 Ravens are always included in discussions of the best singleseason NFL defenses of all time. Pass protection s record run finally ends: The Bengals went the first 15 quarters of this season without allowing a sack. The wall finally cracked with 12:58 left in the fourth period at New England, when Patriots DT Chris Jones broke through to drop QB Andy Dalton for an eight-yard loss on a third-and-six play. But it was the only sack allowed by the Bengals, and they continue to lead the NFL in fewest sacks allowed. Oakland and Denver are tied for secondfewest, at four. Entering the New England game, the Bengals had become the first Cincinnati team to play Games 1-3 without allowing a sack. My hat s off to our line, and the rest of the offense as well, said Dalton. The other 10 guys all play a part, and I m trying to not hold the ball too long so that I can help out. The offensive line has weathered the loss of starting RG Kevin Zeitler to a calf injury. Seventh-year pro Mike Pollak has filled in capably since Zeitler went down against Atlanta in Game 2, and Zeitler may be able to return to action in the Carolina game. The other starting G is fourth-year pro Clint Boling, and between the guards is rookie C Russell Bodine, bidding to become the first Bengals rookie offensive lineman to hold down a starting position for a season since G Eric Steinbach in Cincinnati s OTs are two veterans in their prime, Andrew Whitworth on the left side and Andre Smith on the right. We ve just got to keep pushing forward and getting better, head coach Marvin Lewis said of the offensive line. We ve played with a different combination, and we just have to make sure they keep playing together. Russell THE HEAD COACHES BENGALS NOTES 3 and is from Louisville, Ky.... Panthers strength and conditioning coach Joe Kenn coached at Louisville in Panthers secondary/passing defense coach Steve Wilks coached at Bowling Green State University in Lewis entered the NFL as linebackers coach with Pittsburgh from , guiding the careers of Pro Bowl selections Kevin Greene, Chad Brown, Levon Kirkland and Greg Lloyd. Born Sept. 23, 1958, in McDonald, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Lewis played linebacker at Idaho State and earned All-Big Sky Conference honors in each of his three seasons ( 78-80). He began his coaching career as an assistant at Idaho State University in Ron Rivera is in his fourth season as Carolina head coach, coming off a 12-4 NFC South championship campaign in He was last season s winner of the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award. Rivera s full record is 28-26, including 0-1 in postseason. In 2011 he took over a team that had finished 2-14, and from , the Panthers improved their record each year. Before joining the Panthers, Rivera coached four seasons with the San Diego Chargers, beginning as inside LBs coach in 2007 and moving to defensive coordinator midway through Rivera s 2010 Chargers defense led the NFL in fewest yards allowed per game (271.6). From , Rivera was defensive coordinator in Chicago, posting a pair of top five finishes in fewest yards allowed. He entered the NFL in 1997 as defensive quality control coach with the Bears. A native of Fort Ord, Calif., Rivera played LB for nine seasons with the Bears ( ). He was a member of the Bears Super Bowl XX championship team in He played LB in college at California and was a second-round draft choice by the Bears. He is the third Latino head coach in NFL history, joining Tom Fears of New Orleans ( ) and Tom Flores of Oakland ( ) and Seattle ( ). Lewis vs. Panthers: Lewis leads 2-0, with wins at Cincinnati in 2006 and at Carolina in Lewis vs. Rivera: No previous meetings. Rivera vs. Bengals: No previous meetings. (Bodine) is doing a nice job. The tackles have been consistent. We ve just got to keep going and keep getting better. The Bengals record for fewest sacks allowed in a season is 17, set in With only one sack allowed to this point, they are on pace to allow an absurdly low total of four for the 2014 season. Pressing the passers: Though Tom Brady bested the Bengals for a passer rating last week, Cincinnati has held its NFL lead in lowest aggregate rating by opposing passers. Bengals foes are at 67.6 for the season, a rating that would place an individual 33rd in this week s league rankings. Green Bay s defense has the second-lowest opponent rating (70.1), and the New York Giants are third at The Bengals do not rank highly for sacks thus far, with 8.0, but their six INTs rank tied for fourth. And statistics crews have credited the Bengals with 28 total passes defensed, an average of 7.0 per game, a sign of tight and well-executed coverage. Head coach Marvin Lewis gives much of the credit to a veteran secondary. The Bengals top five secondary players average 7.8 years experience. The depth of our secondary, and their experience and maturity and their knowledge of the game of football is very important to us, Lewis said. It makes a huge difference in the things that you re able to do. Starting corners Terence Newman and Leon Hall have 12 and eight seasons, respectively, and they are playing together for the third straight year. When we re in the nickel and Leon s on my side, it s kind of weird because

4 (Pressing the passers, continued) we sometimes look at each other and know to pass off a route, Newman said. We just look at each other and nod. I think it s just that we ve played awhile and we watch film together, so there s different routes we see on film and say, Hey let s just pass it off, it s easier. We understand what each other thinks. Bengals opponents have completed 99 passes in 175 attempts (56.6 percent) for 1036 yards (259.0 per game), with four TDs and six interceptions. Four-for-six: The Bengals 3-0 start this season was the franchise s seventh unbeaten start of three or more games. In four of the previous six instances, the Bengals made the playoffs: YEAR START FINAL COMMENT Wheels fell off in season No Wild Card despite franchise-best win pct. (.786) Advanced to Super Bowl XVI Won tiebreaker in AFC Central Division champs in Lewis third year Last-second losses in last two games Jones holds top PR spot: Bengals CB Adam Jones leads the NFL for the third straight week in punt return average, at 23.6 on five returns. Second place is held by Ted Ginn Jr. of Arizona, at Jones upped his season average by almost six yards last week at New England, going 47 yards to the New England 37 on his only return of the game. On the next play, the Bengals hit a 37-yard TD pass to pull within It was the bright spot of an overall dismal evening for Cincinnati. Jones had a 45-yard punt return on Sept. 7 at Baltimore and a 24-yarder on Sept. 14 vs. Atlanta. But with cornerback duties also to perform he s the No. 3 CB behind starters Leon Hall and Terence Newman Jones is used situationally by the coaching staff. WR Brandon Tate also returns punts for Cincinnati. That s a factor in Jones ongoing status for the NFL rankings, because a player must be averaging at least 1.25 returns per team game to qualify for the rankings. Jones needed his one return at New England to remain a qualifier for the league s punt return title, and he ll need at least two this week vs. Carolina to remain a qualifier through Week 6. Ginn Jr. also has only five returns and will need two vs. Washington next week to remain a qualifier. Third in the NFL in punt returns, and sure to stay in the rankings with 14 total for the season, is Darren Sproles of Philadelphia at He s not about fair : When Bengals CB Adam Jones says he doesn t like to fair catch on punt returns, he s not kidding. He has had 82 returns since his last fair catch, which came for Tennessee on Nov. 16, He has had 49 returns without a fair catch as a Bengal. For perspective on those numbers, consider that in 2013, for the full NFL season, there were 58.1 percent as many fair catches (636) as there were punts returned (1094). Jones has five career punt returns for touchdowns, second-most among active NFL players. He disdains the idea that a simple good return to improve field position is a returner s base goal. I m trying to score, Jones says. I don t get excited over 10 yards. Dalton fifth in passer ratings: Though the Bengals lost last week at New England, QB Andy Dalton posted his highest passer rating in a game this season, logging a score. He completed 15-of-24 (62.5) for 205 yards, with two TDs and no INTs. His TD passes went 37 yards to WR Mohamed Sanu and 17 yards to WR A.J. Green, both in the third quarter. Through four games, Dalton has a rating, ranked third in the AFC and fifth in the NFL. He has completed 70-of-108 (64.8 percent) for 926 yards (231.5 yards per game), with four TDs and just one INT. He ranks second in the NFL in yards-per-attempt (8.57) and tied for second in fewest interceptions. Dalton knew entering this season that he would be under intense scrutiny throughout the campaign, having gained national attention by leading three straight playoff teams but failing thus far to win in postseason. He attracted still more attention when, during preseason, the Bengals committed to him with a contract extension through He has handled the spotlight with calm and confidence. Despite the loss at New England, Dalton has a record as the Bengals starter, for a winning percentage of.635. That s the best percentage in franchise history for a starter (minimum 10 games). Dalton has started all 52 Bengals games since arriving as a second-round draft choice in In Games 1-2 this 4 season, he became the first QB in franchise history to complete passes of 75 or more yards in consecutive games, going 77 yards to A.J. Green for a fourthquarter game-winner at Baltimore and going 76 yards to Sanu the following week against Atlanta. He was credited with smelling and beating a blitz on both of the plays. Regarding the team s long-range 2014 goal winning in the playoffs Dalton said: This is a long haul, and I can only look ahead and try to keep getting better and helping our team be better. I m confident in what we have. I know that quarterbacks are ultimately judged by success in the playoffs, and I m not complaining about that. It s just the way it is. But maybe some people overlook just how hard it is to get to the playoffs. Our fans have come to expect that of us, and it s not that way in every city. I m proud of what we ve accomplished but I know we and I have a lot more to do. No surprise to the teachers: Well before QB Andy Dalton s successful 2014 start, his coaches pretty much predicted it. They said his work in daily preseason practice foretold what figured to be his best season yet. I know he s better, said quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese. I can see it in his decisiveness, his details, the ball placement, the confidence. What strikes me is the consistency. Something may not be right, but we bounce back quickly. Nothing lingers from one bad play to causing another bad one. If there was any kind of a transition period with Dalton moving into new coordinator Hue Jackson s offensive scheme, it didn t last long. I think we have a bond, which is important, Jackson says. Andy s getting to know me and I m getting to know him. I like everything about him. What I m most proud of is, he has allowed me to coach him. I ve seen some guys bristle when change happens. He hasn t blinked, and none of the guys on offense have, and that s been good to see. Says Dalton: It s been a really easy transition. Hue and I started this with a good relationship, him being on the staff (in other roles) the last two years. Hue has made it clear that I m his guy, that I m going to be running everything, and that s great. Everything with Hue is about the quarterback position, that he s the leader of this team. Dalton signed up through 2020: Two weeks into preseason, the Bengals signed QB Andy Dalton to a contract extension running through the 2020 season. His original contract had run through 14. A second-round Bengals draft choice in 2011, Dalton has led the Bengals to the playoffs in each of his three previous seasons, including an AFC North Division championship in 13. In 13, he set franchise season records for passing yards (4293) and TD passes (33). Andy is being rewarded for his accomplishments with a significant contract, said Katie Blackburn, Bengals executive vice-president, and we are pleased to have a deal that will make him a key part of our team for a number of years. Dalton in 2013 won two AFC Offensive Player of the Week awards and was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for October. He joined S David Fulcher as the only Bengals to win three AFC weekly or monthly awards in a season. It s stating the obvious that this is a key move for the ongoing success of our team, said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, I congratulate our front office, and Andy and his representatives, for coming together to make this happen in a constructive way for the football team. Andy is still a young player (26), he has led us to the playoffs three straight years, and by far we have not seen the best of him yet. It s great that the Bengals have shown this confidence in me, Dalton said. This is only a beginning. We have higher goals than just making the playoffs, and it s my job to lead us there. The Bengals and Dalton have received praise for structuring a contract that preserves the team s ability to retain other key players under the salary cap while still rewarding the quarterback handsomely. That s important to Andy, said OT Andrew Whitworth. He understands the game. He understands what makes it go. He won in college at a place (TCU) where not many people won as much as he did. He understands that he needs other guys that help him win. He came in as a rookie and played on a team when it lost its franchise quarterback and was supposed to go Whitworth s reference was to 2011, when the Bengals opened the season with QB Carson Palmer holding out. The team was widely forecast as a lastplace finisher, but Dalton, a second-round draft choice, led a 9-7 playoff season and earned a Pro Bowl berth. A parallel for Dalton? Bengals QB Andy Dalton hasn t yet won a playoff game, but he has led the team to three berths in three seasons, and

5 (A parallel for Dalton?, continued) that s a far better start than most including one Peyton Manning, Denver s Hall-of-Fame lock of a QB. Manning needed his first five seasons ( ) to lead the Indianapolis Colts to three playoff berths, and the Colts were eliminated in the first round all three times ( 99, 00, 02). Manning led his first playoff wins (two) in 2003, his sixth season as a Colt. Dalton s playoff passer rating is not a point of pride at 56.2, but head coach Marvin Lewis points out that Cincinnati s highly rated defenses allowed opposing QBs to post an aggregate 94.9 rating in the three postseason contests. So obviously it s not all on Andy, Lewis says. We all know the way it works, how the pressure falls on the quarterback, but that doesn t mean it s always valid. The pressure is on us as an entire team to improve. Dalton has had no bigger backer than Bengals president Mike Brown. Prior to the Aug. 4 completion of Dalton s new contract, Brown said: I like him on the field; he s steady Eddie, Brown said. He competes. He doesn t do stupid things. He keeps us focused. He makes us a winning team. He s won nine games, then 10, then 11. That s pretty good. Everybody knows we didn t win in the playoffs, and we have to get over that hump. And we are counting on Andy to get us to that point. Dalton has a history of earning statistical comparisons with the biggest names among NFL QBs. For example, he threw more TD passes (80) over his three seasons than anyone except Manning and Drew Brees. But Brown takes the comparison with the best to off-field matters as well. I think he is an exceptional person, Brown said. Nobody has more respect in our building than he. I would tell you that of all the quarterbacks we have had, he is respected by his teammates as much as any of them. Apprised of Brown s remarks, Dalton said: It means a lot to hear him say that. To know I have support from the top down, that is exactly what you want. And saying how everyone in the organization respects me... not that I doubted that, but it s really good to hear. Andy by the numbers: More of the reasons why QB Andy Dalton draws such high praise from his bosses. CAREER: His W-L record as a starter gives him a.635 winning percentage, best in Bengals history for a QB with 10 or more starts. He is one of only five starting QBs in NFL history to lead a team to the playoffs his first three seasons. His 80 TD passes from stand as third-most in NFL history for a player in his first three seasons, trailing only Dan Marino (98) and Peyton Manning (85). He was on the throwing end for 256 of A.J. Green s 260 catches from , most in NFL history for a player in his first three seasons. LAST SEASON: He joined Peyton Manning and Cam Newton as the only QBs in league history to pass for 3000 yards in their first three seasons. He broke Bengals season records set by Carson Palmer for touchdown passes (33) and passing yards (4293). He finished the season with a passer rating of 88.8, improving that mark for the third straight season. He ranked fifth in the AFC. He joined S David Fulcher as the only Bengals to win three of the NFL s weekly or monthly AFC offensive player awards in a season. He became the first Bengals passer to throw for 300 or more yards in four consecutive games. THIS SEASON: In Games 1-2, he became the first Bengals QB to throw completions of 75-plus yards in consecutive games. In Game 3 vs. Tennessee, he became the first Bengals QB to catch a touchdown pass, beating tight coverage to convert an 18-yard score on an aerial from WR Mohamed Sanu. He is in triple digits in passer rating through four games, at That ranks third in the AFC and fifth in the NFL. Radar in the red zone: Bengals QB Andy Dalton ranks third among active NFL passers in ratio of red-zone TDs to INTs (minimum of 25 redzone TDs). He has thrown for 57 TDs and just three INTs, a ratio of 19.0-to-1. The leader in the category is Russell Wilson of Seattle, and Aaron Rodgers of Green Bay is second. Andy s performance in this area is the type of thing we ve come to expect from him, said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. He s not only a fine talent, but a smart player who is going to avoid the big mistake. We ve got a lot of confidence in Andy when we get the ball into scoring range. 5 Here are the active NFL leaders in the category of TD-INT ratio on red-zone plays (minimum 25 TDs): PLAYER, CURRENT TEAM TD INT RATIO Russell Wilson, Seattle to-1 Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay to-1 Andy Dalton, Cincinnati to-1 Tom Brady, New England to-1 Ryan Tannehill, Miami to-1 Green just keeps getting better: WR A.J. Green brought an exceptional skill level to Cincinnati in 2011, as the fourth overall selection in the draft, and he has steadily improved every year. The fact he s in only his fourth season cannot be of cheer to Bengals foes. Though it might seem opponents must be game-planning to stop him, he simply finds a way to get open and make great grabs. He has averaged yards over the three full games he has played this season. This excludes Sept. 14 vs. Atlanta, when he played only five snaps due to turf toe. Green had 81 yards on five catches last week at New England, leading the team in receiving yards and tying for the lead in catches. Among his five catches was a 17-yarder for his second TD of the year, but he also suffered a rarity for him, a fumble that the Bengals lost. And though five-for-81 with a TD is a performance most receivers would happily take every week, Green is looking to step up his performance this week, in his first career game vs. Carolina. He had topped the 100-yard mark in each of his first two full games played this season. He wasn t quite 100 percent on Sept. 21 vs. Tennessee, due to a still slightly sore toe. But he still led all receivers in the game in catches (six) and receiving yards (102). Throw in two Titans pass interference flags against him, and one could argue Green almost exactly matched his 131-yard, one-td performance from the season opener at Baltimore. The two flags against the Titans totaled 29 yards (102+29=131), and one of them was in the end zone, setting up a oneyard Giovani Bernard TD run on the next play. Green now has 17 games of 100-plus yards in 51 contests, an average of one every three games. His next 100-yarder will tie him with Cris Collinsworth (played eight seasons) for fourth place on the Bengals all-time list. Green is only three away from tying Isaac Curtis (played 12 seasons) for second place at 20. The franchise leader, at this point still by a wide margin, is Chad Johnson (played 10 seasons) at 31. Last season, Green became the first Bengal to log six 100-yard games in a season, and he also became the first Bengal to get 100 in five consecutive games. Green s TD on Sept. 7 at Baltimore was a highlight-reel 77-yarder, featuring a juggling catch of a tipped ball followed by a double-juke move that left a Ravens defender in his tracks and cleared a smooth path to the end zone. The fourth-quarter score brought the Bengals from a deficit to a win. Hue J. pushes A.J.: From , Bengals WR A.J. Green had the most catches (260) and second-most yards (3833) of any receiver in NFL history for his first three seasons. But when his name came up during the offseason as No. 2 in the NFL Network s rating of WRs from 2013, behind Calvin Johnson of Detroit, Green received a text message from offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. It was more of a prod than a pat on the back. It said, Now, let s go be (number) one, Green recalls. One thing about Hue J., he s never satisfied with where I am. Which is more than fine with Green. I knew that text was coming, Green says. He s pushing me to be better. I want that. No matter what I do or how much I ve accomplished these first three years, there s always more I can do, and it s a coach s job to push you to that. I feel like I haven t reached my peak yet. When you get to the point when you feel like you have done everything, it s time for you to hang it up. Last season, Green set Bengals records for 100-yard receiving games in a campaign (six) and for most consecutive 100-yard games (five). He joined Hall of Famer Tom Fears for fewest games played (38) to hit the triple benchmark of 200 receptions 3000 yards and 20 receiving TDs. In 2012, he became only the second NFL player in what is now a 49-year span to catch a TD pass in nine straight games, joining Hall of Famer Jerry Rice. But for motivation purposes, Green chooses to take a painful look at his totals from Cincinnati s 0-3 postseason record of the last three years. He has averaged only 53.9 yards with no TDs. If I play well, the team plays well, Green says. I ve got to give them that spark in the playoffs, and I haven t done that the whole three years. I ve got a lot of regrets about my play in those games, but you can t live in the past.

6 (Bengals notes, continued) Best for first four? As noted in the previous item, Bengals WR A.J. Green is first in NFL history for receptions in a player s first three seasons and second for that span in receiving yards. So what numbers does Green need to reach in 2014 to end the year with the top totals for a receiver s first four seasons? In receptions, he ll need 83. That would move him from 260 to 343, ahead of Anquan Boldin, the current four-year leader at 342. Certainly that appears within range. Green has had 97 and 98 catches the past two seasons, after grabbing 65 as a rookie. In receiving yards, Green will need 1564 to overtake Randy Moss, the only player Green has not topped for seasons 1-3. Moss had 5396 yards over his first four seasons, and Green enters his fourth at A total of 1564 would be a Bengals record, easily topping Chad Johnson s mark of 1440, but that s not to say Green couldn t do it. To stay behind Moss in second place when the fouryear total is in, Green would need That would push him to 5089, ahead of second-place Torry Holt (5088). Green has had more than 1256 receiving yards each of the last two seasons, logging 1350 in 2012 and 1426 last season. goes, people can defend that. But we have several guys that when they touch the ball, a lot of good things can happen. Though new this season to the Bengals offensive coordinator role, Jackson is no newcomer to offensive game planning. He has held three previous offensive coordinator roles in the NFL and was head coach at Oakland in 2011, posting an 8-8 record for a franchise that hasn t had a winning season since I tend to kind of be who I am, and this is who I am, if you check my track record, Jackson said. I don t hold much back. I ve never been a guy like that. I believe in our players, how we coach them, what we ask them to do, and how we ask them to execute it. If you do that, you stand a good chance of good things happening more often than bad things happening. But Jackson s ideas are not all his own. He listens to the other creative minds on the coaching staff. Hue does a great job of having an open dialogue, and ideas get bounced around, said WRs coach James Urban. I don t think anybody would claim all this as their own. They re all our ideas, and Hue does a great job of having that forum where we can say, Hey, how about this? Or he can say, What do you think about that? And then, we put the plan together. Andy and Mo make a feat for the book: On Sept. 21 vs. Tennessee, QB Andy Dalton and WR Mohamed Sanu reversed roles and made Bengals history, completing the first WR-to-QB touchdown pass in franchise annals. In the first quarter, with the Bengals leading only 3-0, Dalton lateraled to Sanu, and as Sanu steamed around the right side, Dalton slipped out into the left flat, awaiting a cross-field toss from Sanu. But the Titans weren t as fooled as Bengals scouting had expected them to be CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson was right in the area with Dalton and Dalton had to beat Wreh-Wilson to the catch on a play where it briefly appeared Dalton might take a devastating hit. Then Dalton righted himself and outran other Tennessee pursuers on an 18-yard trip to the end zone. He dove for the pylon and got just over the goal line, avoiding a possible hit by S Michael Griffin. Asked if he had found himself wishing Sanu wouldn t have thrown the ball, given the presence of Wreh-Wilson, Dalton insisted that was not the case. I always tell my receivers to go up and make a play when the coverage is tight, Dalton said, so I guess Mo trusted me to go up and get it. I went and attacked the ball and made a play. I knew there was a chance I d get hit, but it didn t turn out that way. With a laugh, Dalton added: I always tell the receivers I have the best hands on the team. I catch (shotgun) snaps all the time. The play was selected by CBS television as its Geico Play of the Day for Sept. 21 in the NFL. Dalton became the first Bengals QB to score a receiving TD. It was the first reception of his career. No other Bengals QB has logged more than one reception, and Dalton is only the second Bengals QB to catch a pass from another player. The first and previously only one was Akili Smith, who caught a six-yard pass from WR Carl Pickens in Three other Bengals QBs had receptions, but they came after deflections of their own passes. Sanu is the only Bengals WR to throw a TD pass, and the one vs. Tennessee was his second. He completed a 73-yarder to fellow WR A.J. Green as a rookie in Ten other WRs in Bengals history have thrown one or more passes, but only four others had completions. Darnay Scott threw a 53-yarder to fellow WR Pickens on his only Bengals pass. Steve Kreider has the most passes by a WR seven but he completed only two, for a total gain of 14 yards. The tricky Mr. Jackson: The Sept. 21 TD pass from WR Mohamed Sanu to QB Andy Dalton (see previous item) was one of a number of what might be called innovative plays this season by new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. Jackson also called for a Sanu pass on Sept. 14 vs. Atlanta, and the result was a 50-yard completion to WR Brandon Tate. On several occasions this season, the offense has run plays with a somewhat wild look, as OTs Andrew Whitworth and Andre Smith have been split wide on each side, separated from the three interior linemen. The Bengals have both run and passed out of this formation. And last week at New England, Sanu lined up in the backfield, took a short pitch from QB Andy Dalton and then pitched to Tate on an end-around. Not every play has worked to perfection, but thus far the Bengals have not suffered from gadget burn. And opposing defenses have been put on watch that their preparation for Cincinnati cannot be limited to just normal football. It s a calculated risk, Jackson said. The more versatile we are as an offense, the harder we are to defend. When people know this is where the ball 6 Duo of dreams? One is super-quick, shifty and packs surprising power. The other is powerful first, but with surprising speed and agility. The smaller guy is second-year Bengals HB Giovani Bernard, the bigger one is rookie HB Jeremy Hill, and together they promise great things for the 2014 offense. Through four games, they have combined for 628 yards from scrimmage, an average of per contest. Bernard has a team-leading 405 scrimmage yards (247 rushing and 158 receiving), and Hill has 223 (133 rushing and 90 receiving). They have scored five of Cincinnati s 10 touchdowns. Bernard has a teamleading three TDs, and Hill is one of three players with two. Though last week at New England was not a banner night for the team in any respect, the HB position produced 141 yards from scrimmage. Bernard had 72 (62 rushing and 10 receiving) and Hill had 69 (one rushing and 68 receiving). If anything at all is clear about the 2014 Bengals season, it s that the running backs are more of a factor in the passing game than in many years. With the season one-fourth over, Bernard and Hill have combined for 19 catches and 248 yards (Bernard at 14-for-158 and Hill at five-for-90). Their total projects to 76 catches and 992 yards for the season. The duo s biggest day this season has been Sept. 14 vs. Atlanta. Bernard had 169 scrimmage yards, rushing 27-for-90 with a TD and catching five passes for an additional 79. Hill had 96 from scrimmage, rushing 15-for-74 with a TD and adding two receptions for 22 yards. Their 265 combined scrimmage yards was the most by two Bengals backs in one game since Dec. 3, 2000, when Corey Dillon (216) and Brandon Bennett (70) combined for 286. The Bernard-Hill total was more than the scrimmage yards total of any combo of Bengals backs since Dec. 22, 2002, when Dillon (142), Nick Luchey (65) and Bennett (64) combined for 271. Both Bernard and Hill were second-round Bengals draft choices. Bernard was the 37th overall pick in the 2013 draft, and Hill went at No. 55 in this past spring s draft. Bernard is a quick and shifty runner, and at a height of just 5-9, he s hard for defenders to pinpoint to lay on a solid hit. And at 208 pounds, he is by no means a little guy in terms of strength. He has a demonstrated ability to create highlight-reel plays in the open field. Hill (6-1, 235) is the biggest back on whom the Bengals have spent a high draft pick since 248-pound Pete Johnson in 1977 (also second round). He has plenty of power for crucial short-yardage plays, and he set an LSU career record for yards per carry (6.25). Last season, he had six rushes of 50 or more yards. He capped his career with 216 rushing yards in the Outback Bowl vs. Iowa. Also last season, he averaged 9.8 yards on 26 receptions. Obviously Jeremy s bigger than me, says Bernard. I m faster than him. I ll take that one. But he s a great back. We re not fighting for whatever. We want to help the team win. We both have that mindset, and that s good to have. It s not about one guy getting more carries than the other. It s about helping the team win. Look out, Brooks: At the quarter-pole of the 2014 season, mark down Bengals HB Giovani Bernard at least on the watch list to threaten one of the most enduring records in franchise history. The mark in question is yards from scrimmage in a season. HB James Brooks set the bar in 1986 with 1773 yards (1087 rushing, 686 receiving), and no one else has come within 150 of that. The No. 2 figure is 1609 (1311 rushing,
