5 R RENARD SMITH - HEAD COACH enard Smith was appointed the full-time head coach at Bowie State University - July 15, 2010 after serving as the Interim Coach of the BSU Lady Bullodgs for four months and has more than 20 years of experience as a Coach, Athletic Administrator and Educator. Prior to his current appointment, Smith served one season as an assistant coach at Bowie State. Before coming to the Bowie State campus, he was employed by Baltimore City Community College ( ) in several capacities; Interim Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director and Health and Wellness Instructor. In the Fall of 2005 while serving as the Interim Athletic Director, Smith was also named Head Woman s Basketball Coach. The Dean of Student Affairs at that time (McCarrol Nole) gave Coach Smith the task of rebuilding the athletic programs for Baltimore City Community College and wanted him to start with Women s Basketball. Rebuild, is just what Renard did in only five seasons. Coach Smith s teams became a Maryland JUCO conference leader and he became one of the MDJU- CO conference top coaches. Renard was named the 2010 Coach of the Year for winning both the MDJUCO Conference Title and the NJCAA Region XX Championship. His team finished the season with an undefeated record of 27-0, were Nationally Ranked 16th in the country and had the #1 Nationally Ranked Defensive Team in the country the entire campaign. Coach Nard is what the student-athletes affectionately called him. He began his athletic career during the summer of 1988 as a Coach and Summer Athletic Program Director for Baltimore City Parks and Recreation. Renard has coached and taught in Baltimore City Public and Private Schools and has even worked in a Catholic school environment at Saint Frances Academy where he served as an assistant Coach for the Boys Varsity Basketball team. In February 2005 Saint Frances won the Baltimore Catholic League Championship. Renard has even gained professional experience by serving as the Director of Basketball Operations for the American Basketball Association (ABA) semi-professional Basketball team the Baltimore Pearls. Renard was born, raised and educated in Baltimore City, where he attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and Morgan State University. Smith earned an undergraduate degree in Adult Education and a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Concordia College. He is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Health and Nutrition from Trinity College. Throughout his career Renard has demonstrated that he is a very dedicated and committed Educator, Athletic Administrator, Coach and Advocate for the welfare of student-athletes. After an 0-8 start in his inaugural season, Coach Smith s Lady Bulldogs finished the season second in the CIAA Northern Division. BSU faught hard in the CIAA Tournament only to fall in the semifinals to conference and eventual NCAA National Champion Shaw University. Smith reminds his student Athletes in his signature quote... 6 LAST ACTION FOR THE LADY BULLDOGS... Livingstone Lady Blue Bears Rout Lady Bulldogs in Conference Opener BOWIE, Md. Senior Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) led four Bowie State University players to score in double figures, logging a double-double of 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, but Livingstone College (10-0, 1-0 CIAA) was much too strong, routing the Lady Bulldogs in the conference opener for both teams on Thursday evening in BSU s A.C. Jordan Arena. Freshman Robin Heard (Waldorf, Md.) Recorded career-bests of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Jasmine McIntosh (Bowie, Md.) and junior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) added 10 points each for the Lady Bulldogs. The loss sets Bowie State season mark at 5-5 overall (1-0 CIAA). Bowie State ended the evening with a 39.7 shooting percentage from the field (27-of-68), which included 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) behind the 3-point line. The Lady Bulldogs did shoot better from the free throw line than their opponent, hitting 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) and BSU out-rebounded the Lady Blue Bears, holding a advantage. The Lady Blue Bears also had four players score in double figures. Kyra Crosby (Atlanta, Ga.) and Precious Roberts (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) pumped in 20 points apiece on a combined 15-of-24 shooting from the field. Cierra York (Winston-Salem, N.C.) netted 18 points and grabbed a teamhigh nine rebounds while Amber Curtis (Savannah, Ga.) added 14 points, six rebounds and tied York for team-high assists honors with five. Livingstone wrapped up the game making 34-of-65 field goals (52.3 percent), 16-of-29 in the second half, and knocked down 21-of-34 (61.8 percent) at the charity stripe. The Lady Blue Bears led by as many as 25 points in the second half, over the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Blue Bears kept the lead for majority of the contest and never looked back. Livingstone went into the half leading over the Lady Bulldogs, as York, Crosby, and Curtis paced the Lady Blue Bears in scoring with 18, 11, and 10 points respectively over the first 20 minutes.
