The Red Foxes are coming off their second tournament win of the season as they won the Duel in the Desert hosted by the UNLV from Dec Marist posted three wins in as many days over Louisville, #21 Nebraska and Houston. Erica Allenspach was named Tournament MVP and averaged 22.3 points including a career-high 34 against Houston. MORE ASSISTS THAN OPPONENT FEWER ASSISTS THAN OPPONENT ASSISTS ARE EVEN MARIST STAYS HOT IN THE DESERT - LAST TIME OUT In a weekend of firsts, and a few seconds, the Marist women s basketball team went 3-0 at the Duel in the Desert to win the tournament title after wins over Louisville, then-#21 Nebraska and Houston on Saturday Dec Monday, Dec. 20. Senior guard Erica Allenspach was named the tournament MVP after she averaged 22.3 points in three games and shot 52.5 percent (18-for-40) from the field. Louisville - the Red Foxes erased a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat the Cardinals Junior guard Corielle Yarde notched her second double-double in as many games as she scored a team-high 25 points on an efficient 8-for-12 shooting from the field. It was the second time this season Yarde scored 25 points or more. Additionally, it was the first time in program history that Marist defeated multiple Big East teams in one season. Marist etched a 2-1 record against the conference this season after it beat Villanova on the road on Sunday, Nov. 28. Nebraska - On the heels of one program first, Marist accomplished another program-first - defeating a nationally-ranked opponent during the regular season. The Red Foxes bested the #21 Cornhuskers to hand Nebraska its second straight loss. Senior guard Erica Allenspach scored a game-high 20 points to lead the way for Marist. For the second straight day the Red Foxes erased a halftime deficit and took the lead for good on a Maria Laterza three-point play with 11:20 to play. Houston - In a battle of tournament unbeatens, Marist jumped out to a 14-point first half lead on the Cougars and stretched the lead to as many as 17 and the Red Foxes defeated Houston to win the tournament title. Allenspach scored 34 points and shot 11-for-18 from the field and 5-for-8 from three-point land. Her 34 points ranks tied for fifth all-time in a single game in program history. She was named tournament MVP for her efforts on the weekend. WARMING UP FOR MAAC PLAY AGAINST SOME OF THE BEST During the non-conference schedule, Marist faced eight teams who advanced to the postseason during seven of which had RPIs in the top-90 at the end of last year. With 10 of their 12 non-conference games away from the McCann Center, the Red Foxes have dropped just two contests and compiled a record of 9-2. Over the last five seasons, Marist has compiled a non-conference record of 59-17, and won 14 non-league games during the season. REPEAT OFFENDER Senior guard Erica Allenspach was named MAAC Player of the Week for the second time in as many reporting periods on Monday, Dec. 27. The two week span covered all three games Marist played at the Duel in the Desert Tournament from Dec in Las Vegas, Nev. For the Dec. 20 period, Allenspach scored a season-high 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting in Marist s upset of #21 Nebraska on Sunday night in the Red Foxes second game of the Duel in the Desert tournament. She scored 13 against Louisville of the Big East on Saturday. In addition she shot 45.5% from the field and 4-for-8 from three point range. On Dec. 27, Allenspach was named Duel in the Desert Tournament MVP after she scored a career-high 34 points to help Marist to the championship in a win over Houston. Her point total tied for fifth on the program s single game list. She sank a season-high six field goals in the first half and tallied a career-high 11 makes in the game. ALLENSPACH-ING THE OFFENSE After a slow start and averaging 8.1 points per game in the first seven contests of the season, senior guard Erica Allenspach has maintained a mark of 20 points per game in the last four outings. During the first seven games of the season she netted 57 points and shot 42.2 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from three-point range. In her last four games, she has totaled 80 points and is shooting 51 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from distance. Allenspach has reached double figures in scoring in each of the last four games, and most recently scored 34 points against Houston on Dec. 20 after she was named MAAC Player of the Week on the same day. Allenspach scored her 1,000th point on Dec. 7 at Hartford, the last time she scored in single digits. LEADING THE NATION... Marist leads the country in fewest turnovers per game, averaging just 11.4 giveaways per outing. The Red Foxes are ahead of second-place, LSU by 1.2 turnovers per game. The Lady Tigers maintain a mark of 12.6 giveaways per game. For the season, Marist has committed 124 turnovers. In their first four games this year, the Red Foxes notched 10 turnovers or less, including a season-low seven at Vermont on Nov. 19. HANGING IN THE TOP-FIVE The Red Foxes rank fourth nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio with an average of 1.38 assists to every turnover. Individually, seniors Elise Caron and Erica Allenspach rank in the top-20 in the nation in the category. Caron stands ninth nationally in the category as of Dec. 20 with an average of 2.83 assists to each turnover. She has amassed 37 assists and 15 turnovers. Nebraska was ranked #21 in the ESPN/ USA Today Coaches Poll. Prior to the win over the Cornhuskers, the Red Foxes dropped 13 in a row to ranked foes. The Red Foxes are now 1-13 during the regular season when they face a ranked foe. Additionally, Nebraska is the only team Marist has ever beaten from the Big XII. The Red Foxes are 2-0 all-time against the Cornhuskers and 2-4 vs. the conference. AUTOMATIC FROM THE LINE Junior forward Brandy Gang has made her last 20 free throws and has not missed at the line since the first half against Dartmouth on Nov. 20. She ranks 10th in the country in free throw percentage with a mark 93.8 percent. She hit a season-high seven free throws twice - vs. Dartmouth and vs. Louisville. Against the Cardinals Gang went 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. RED FOXES IN MAAC OPENERS Since joining the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the season, Marist is 8-5 in conference openers and has won the contest against five different opponents dating back to the season. Additionally, three of the MAAC openers have gone to overtime, with the Red Foxes on the short end on all three occasions. Under Head Coach Brian Giorgis, Marist is 6-2 in MAAC openers and has won its last five. In his first three conference openers, he was 1-2 with a pair of overtime losses to Loyola and Siena. Since the season Giorgis has not lost a MAAC opener. MARIST-RIDER - THE SERIES The Red Foxes stand at all-time against the Rider Broncs and have won the last 14 head-to-head meetings dating back to the 2003 season. Since Giorgis took over the program at the start of the season, Marist is 15-1 against Rider. The teams will play again in Lawrenceville, N.J. on Friday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. SCOUTING THE BRONCS Rider has lost its first 11 games to start the campaign but during the stretch have dropped games to the likes of Penn State and Georgetown. The Broncs are led by Preseason Third Team All-MAAC selection Caitlin Bopp. She leads the conference in rebounding with 9.0 boards per game. She has tallied 13 career double-doubles entering Sunday s tilt. Julianne Viani was the last player to score her 1,000th point with the program. She eclipsed the mark on Nov. 23, 2008 in a win over Harvard at the McCann Center. On Dec. 11 Allenspach was presented with a ball commemorating her 1,000th career point prior to tip-off between Marist and Boston University. Allenspach has been with the team for the three previous 1,000 point scorers as well. Meg Dahlman, Rachele Fitz and Viani all joined the 1,000-point club with Allenspach as a teammate. Currently, Allenspach ranks first in career three-point field goal percentage (.421) and is second in free throw percentage (.820). Allenspach also ranks seventh all-time in assists with 302 and ninth in career steals with 168. HOMETOWN HEROES In her first career collegiate game in her home state of Vermont, sophomore Kelsey Beynnon scored a career-high 10 points and set career-best numbers in six other statistical categories as well. Marist defeated Vermont at Patrick Gymnasium. Beynnon hit two three-point attempts and went 4-for-5 from the free throw line. She also added three rebounds, two assists and a steal against the Catamounts. Junior Corielle Yarde also put fourth an outstanding performance in front of her hometown fans as Marist defeated Villanova on Sunday, Nov. 28. Yarde scored 26 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor and netted an 11-for-12 mark from the free throw line. She went 10-for-10 from the line over the final 10:30 of the game to secure Marist s fourth win all-time against a Big East team. Yarde was named MAAC Player of the Week following the game for her efforts. MAAC RECOGNIZES A GREAT DAY IN HER OWN BACK-YARDE Following her 26-point effort in her home state of Pennsylvania, junior guard Corielle Yarde was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 29. It is Yarde s third Player of the Week award in the last two seasons as she was lauded on Dec. 14, 2009 and Jan. 11, A TEAM EFFORT... Marist holds the lead in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 10 statistical categories. The Red Foxes lead in scoring offense, scoring margin, free throw percentage, rebounding offense, rebounding defense, rebounding margin, assists, turnover margin and assist-to-turnover-ratio and defensive rebounding percentage. The Red Foxes are averaging 67.4 points per game through 11 contests and are only allowing 56.2 points per game. The most points Marist has allowed this year was 70, and that came vs. Houston in the Duel in the Desert final....built ON STRONG INDIVIDUALS The Red Foxes have four players who rank in the top-five in the MAAC in five statistical categories including assists, free throw percentage, blocks, assist-to-turnover ratio, and field goal percentage. Senior Elise Caron ranks third in assists with 3.4 per game and leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio with an average of 2.5. Junior Brandy Gang leads the league in free throw percentage with a mark of 93.8% (30-for-32). She 10th in the country in free throw percentage and has made her last 20 free throws since Nov. 20. Senior Erica Allenspach stands second in the MAAC in free throw percentage with a mark of 87.2%. She ranks third in the conference in field goal percentage and shoots at a clip of 46.8 percent. Allenspach ranks fifth in assists with 2.9 helpers per game Sophomore Kate Oliver is fifth in blocked shots with 14 this season, an average of 1.3 per game. MARIST WINNING STREAKS UNDER GIORGIS... In addition to the 10 letter winners, Marist returns four starters in Erica Allenspach, Kristine Best, Kate Oliver and Corielle Yarde. NATIONAL RECOGNITION FROM THE COACHES Following its three wins at the Duel in the Desert, the Red Foxes received two votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll on Dec. 21, and most recently four in the Dec. 27 edition of the poll. In the AP Poll, the Red Foxes received one vote on Dec. 27. Marist received four votes in the Preseason USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll on Nov. 3. Marist has appeared in the Associated Press Poll eight times in program history, and has been in the Coaches Poll six times. PRESEASON PICKS For the fourth straight season, the Marist women s basketball team was the unanimous choice to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as selected by the league s 10 head coaches. The Red Foxes were awarded 100 points in the poll. Marist had two players named to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team in Erica Allenspach and Corielle Yarde. Allenspach was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. It was the fourth straight year a Marist player was named Preseason Player of the Year and fifth time in the last six seasons. Iona was picked to finish second, while Loyola and Fairfield rounded out the top four spots. During the season, she averaged a career-high 12.9 points per game to go along with 4.4 rebounds per game and 59 steals, en route to a Second Team All-Met selection. She has been named to a Pre-season All-MAAC Teams in each of the last three seasons. Yarde was a Second Team All-MAAC selection as she set career-highs in 15 statistical categories a season ago. Additionally, she scored a career-high 32 points against Boston University on Dec. 12, She was twice named the MAAC Player of the Week and following her sophomore season, Yarde was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team. THE NEWEST ADDITION - NINA TRIPLO On April 25, 2010, Nina Triplo became the newest member of the Marist women s basketball team through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The Red Foxes welcomed Nina Triplo to the family at Marist s Historic Cornell Boathouse with an adoption ceremony. Members of the foundation were on hand including the founder Denis Murphy. Nina was born on Aug. 5, 1998 and resides in Stone Ridge, N.Y. with her parents Gina and Joseph. In 2007, Nina was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma, a form of benign brain tumor. She enjoys singing, acting and dancing. On Saturday, Dec. 11, Nina received her official team jersey in a special pregame ceremony. GANG-ING UP ON GRAMBLING Junior forward Brandy Gang set career-highs in five statistical categories during the Red Foxes win over Grambling State on Saturday. The career best marks came in points (19), field goals (seven), field-goal attempts (13), three-pointers (three) and three-point attempts (five). She was one of four Red Foxes to reach double figures in the team s first win of the season. Gang was joined by Erica Allenspach, 15 points, Kate Oliver, 12 points, and Corielle Yarde 10 points. Yarde scored all 10 in the second half. TOURNEY TURNOVER LOW Marist totaled the fewest turnovers of any team at the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic to begin the season. The Red Foxes totaled 20 turnovers in the two games, with 10 in each matchup. The output was 13 fewer than both St. John s and Grambling who had 33 giveaways apiece, while Kansas State committed 38 turnovers in two games.

Giorgis became just the second head coach in Marist basketball history to win 200 games at Marist, as Dave Magarity reached the milestone with the men s program during the season. Magarity used 402 games at Marist to eclipse the mark, while Giorgis accomplished the feat in just 264 games. Entering the season with a mark of , he ranked 11th among active coaches with a winning percentage of.758. FREQUENT FLYERS During the first 12 games of the schedule, all non-conference games, the Marist women s basketball team will log over 13,300 miles of travel. The Red Foxes open the season with five consecutive away games at Kansas State, Vermont and Villanova. After its home opener against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 4, Marist will make its shortest road trip of the non-conference season to Hartford. On Dec Marist will fly to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Duel in the Desert tournament. Following a short stay at home for the holidays, Marist will return west to take on Arizona State on Dec. 28. TOP 5 PLAYER AT THE TOURNEY Gang was one of five players named to the 2010 Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team. Marist finished in third place at the season-opening tournament hosted by Kansas State. For the weekend, Gang tied for the team lead in scoring and averaged 12.5 points. Allenspach also averaged 12.5 points per game. Gang led the team in rebounds with 6.5 per game including eight against Grambling State on Saturday. For the weekend she shot 9-for-19 (.474) from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point range. Joining Gang on the all-tournament team were Jalena Childs (MVP) and Mariah White of Kansas State and Nadirah McKenith and Da Shena Stevens of St. John s. THE FOUR LEADERS Of the 10 players that return to the Red Foxes this season, Marist head coach Brian Giorgis has named four captains for the season - seniors Erica Allenspach, Elise Caron and Maria Laterza and junior Corielle Yarde. A pre-season and post-season First Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) choice during her junior season, Allenspach has totaled 948 points, just 52 from 1,000 on her career in her first three seasons in Poughkeepsie. She was thrust into a starting role in just her 13th collegiate game, and has started all 88 games she has played in since. The stretch began on Dec. 22, 2007 at Albany. Allenspach was a two-time MAAC All-Tournament team choice in 2009 and Away from the MAAC, Allenspach has also been honored by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association as a Second Team choice in Yarde posted new career highs in 11 statistical categories during her breakout sophomore season, including a double-double at Boston University behind 32 points and 13 rebounds on Dec. 12. She was named Second Team All-MAAC at the end of the season, after she was named MAAC Player of the Week twice in five weeks from Dec Jan. 11. Yarde was also named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team. At the start of her junior season, Yarde ranks fourth all-time on Marist s free-throw percentage list with a mark of 80% and 121 made foul shots. Caron also returns to the Marist backcourt after she appeared in all 34 games as a junior. Caron played nearly 15 minutes per game as a junior and tallied 76 points on the season. A MAAC All-Academic Team choice in , Caron has been known for her defensive commitment and intensity as she has accumulated 90 career steals. The most experienced member of the post players is Laterza who is back for her senior season. A captain on this year s team, she started two games as a junior against West Virginia and Oklahoma State in the first four games of the campaign. A physical defender, Laterza is tied for 10th on the all-time blocks list with 57, including 14 during her junior year. RIDER) MARIST RANKED SEVENTH IN COLLEGEINSIDER.COM MID-MAJOR POLL For the eighth week, the Marist women s basketball team is ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid- Major Poll. This week the Red Foxes remained at #7 in the top-25 after defeating Louisville, #21 Nebraska and Houston last week to win the Duel in the Desert Tournament. The mid-major poll on CollegeInsider.com consists of teams from the America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast. During the preseason, Marist was ranked 7th on Oct. 27. MAAC WOMEN S FINAL GOES NATIONAL The 2011 MAAC Women s Basketball Championship Game, scheduled for Monday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m., will be broadcast nationally for the first time on ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network. The Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. will host the 2011 MAAC Basketball Championships from March 3-7. Since 1991, when the men s and women s championships were moved to the same site, the women s championship game has been played on Sunday during the MAAC Basketball Championships. The format change, which gives the women s championship game participants a day off following the semifinals, was approved by the MAAC Council of Presidents in June. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Marist welcomes five new players to the roster this season: Kristina Danella, Casey Dulin, Suzzette Garnett, Emma O Connor and Leanne Ockenden. Danella is a transfer from the University of Massachusetts who will sit out during the season due to NCAA transfer rules. Dulin was the female all-time leading scorer in Milford with 1,639 points. During her senior season she averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists per game. As a senior she was nominated to the McDonald s All-American Team. Garnett joined the team as a walk-on. She played four years of high school basketball at the School of Business for Young Women in the Bronx. O Connor averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four blocks per game during her senior year at Kellenberg Memorial High School. She was named the Nassau County Player of the Year following her senior season, and was named to the All-Long Island First Team. Ockenden averaged 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists per game during her senior year at Christian Brothers Academy. She was the OHSL Player of the Year in 2008 and was an All-State Class AA selection as well. Ockenden set an OHSL record with 72 three-pointers in a season twice. St. John s (1-0) was led by Da Shena Stevens who notched a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Shenneika Smith added 12 points, while Centhya Hart grabbed 13 boards. Marist surged to start the second half and got the margin as close as three at The Red Foxes used a 6-0 run over 1:23 to open the frame. Stevens responded with a layup and a pair of free throws to take the St. John s advantage to with 12:44 remaining in the game. MANHATTAN, KAN. - Junior forward Brandy Gang of the Marist women s basketball team scored a career-high 19 points and was one of four Red Foxes in double figures as Marist (1-1) cruised to an victory over Grambling State at the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic at Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. The win secured third place in the tournament. Gang, who led all scorers, was joined in double figures by senior guard Erica Allenspach who scored 15 points, sophomore forward Kate Oliver and junior guard Corielle Yarde who notched 12 and 10 points respectively. It was the first time since Feb. 19, 2010 that four Red Foxes notched double-digit scoring efforts in the same game. Gang and Yarde tied for the game-high in rebounds with eight a piece. Additionally, Gang shot 7-for-13 from the floor. Tonishea Mack opened the game with a three-point basket 54 seconds in for Grambling. The Red Foxes responded with a 25-4 run over a span of 10:24. Sophomore Kate Oliver led Marist (2-1) with 14 points, while junior Brandy Gang and sophomore Kelsey Beynnon each chipped in 10 points. Beynnon s 10 points were a career-high. A complete team effort, junior Kristine Best and freshman Leanne Ockenden scored nine points apiece and senior Elise Caron added eight more to the Red Foxes offense. In addition senior Erica Allenspach tallied nine assists to go along with five points and five rebounds. Lauren Wheeler of Vermont scored the first basket of the game 44 seconds into the contest. The Red Foxes responded with a 10-0 run over the next 1:58 to take a 10-2 lead with 17:03 to play in the half. During the run Allenspach hit a layup, Oliver nailed a jumper, and junior Corielle Yarde and Caron each hit a three. The Red Foxes shot 43.8 percent from the field in the game, and Oliver led Marist with a 7-for-11 clip from the floor. Marist claimed the TD Bank Classic Tournament Title in its first appearance in the event. Both the Red Foxes and Boston College Eagles were 2-0 on the weekend. The tie was broken because Marist allowed fewer points than the Eagles over the two game span. Juniors Corielle Yarde and Brandy Gang joined Oliver in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively. Gang led the way on the boards for Marist and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Yarde and senior Elise Caron each had six assists as the Red Foxes totaled 21 helpers in the contest. Marist (3-1) scored the first seven points of the game over a span of 1:20. During the run, Yarde scored five of her seven first half points. Gang added a pair of free throws. Dartmouth (0-4) and Marist traded baskets until a Louise Vanden Bosch three-pointer cut the Red Foxes lead to five at with 10:19 to play in the first stanza. The Vanden Bosch basket sparked a 7-0 run for the Big Green. Dartmouth took a lead, its only advantage of the contest when Faziah Steen nailed a pair of free throws to put Dartmouth in front temporarily. VILLANOVA, PA. - The Marist women s basketball team concluded the month of November with a 4-1 record after it posted a win over Villanova of the Big East Conference Sunday afternoon at The Pavilion. The Red Foxes were paced by a game-high 26 points from junior guard Corielle Yarde, behind 7-for-11 shooting from the field and 11-for- 12 from the free throw line. Both her free throws made (11) and free throw attempts (12) are career highs. As a team, the Red Foxes shot 22-for-27 from the free throw line in the game, including a 20-for-23 clip in the second stanza. Marist (4-1) shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and hit 14 field goals. Junior forward Brandy Gang scored 16 points and added a game-high eight rebounds, one shy of her career-high nine. She also added two assists, two steals and a rebound. On the glass, the Red Foxes were paced by junior forward Brandy Gang (Hartville, Ohio) who equaled a career-high with nine. She shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line and added two assists and two steals. Her 1,000th point came on a three-point basket from straight on with 13:33 remaining in the first half. POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Head Coach Brian Giorgis earned his 200th collegiate victory on Saturday night as the Marist women s basketball team defeated Boston University at the McCann Center. Giorgis becomes the first coach in program history to earn 200 wins. The Red Foxes were led by junior guard Corielle Yarde who notched her third career double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while senior guard Erica Allenspach chipped in 13 points and four assists. Yarde shot 6-for-14 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Allenspach reached double figures for the first time in five games. She shot 4-for-9 from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. The Red Foxes opened the game on an 8-1 run over the first 2:41 of the contest. Senior Elise Caron opened the game with a three-pointer with the shot clock dwindling. After Chantell Alford split a pair of free throws, sophomore Kate Oliver and Yarde hit a jump shot and a triple respectively to cap the run. As a team, it is Marist s second win against a Big East foe this year, the first time in program history it has won multiple games against the conference in a single season. Yarde totaled a team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. She shot an efficient 8-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three point range. Yarde was also 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Junior forward Brandy Gang and senior guard Erica Allenspach added 13 points apiece. Gang shot 7-for-7 from the free throw line, while Allenspach was 5-for-6 from the line. As a team Marist (7-2) went 24-for-29 at the free throw line and hit 19 foul shots in the second half. It shot 46.8 percent from the field. On Sunday night, the Red Foxes posted a victory over the #21 Nebraska Cornhuskers in the second game of the Duel in the Desert tournament at the Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Senior guard Erica Allenspach paced Marist with a season-high 20 points. In addition to her best point total of the season, she added three rebounds, shot 7-for-12 from the field, 4-for-4 from the free throw line and had three assists against no turnovers. It was the first time Allenspach scored 20 points or more since she set her career-high of 26 points on Jan. 18, 2010 at Siena. In the first 4:39 of the opening stanza, Nebraska (8-3) opened up a four point lead, 12-8, after a jumper by Catheryn Redmon. Over the next 2:14, the Red Foxes responded with a 7-0 run and took its first lead of the game. Marist got baskets from Allenspach, freshman Casey Dulin, and a free throw that opened the stretch from senior guard Elise Caron. Following the run, the Red Foxes led with 12:50 to play in the first period. The Cornhuskers pushed the lead to seven, its largest of the half, with 35 seconds to play, after a layup by Dominique Kelley made the score Nebraska took a lead into the locker room. Allenspach s point output ranks tied for fifth on the Red Foxes single-game scoring list, and as a result she was named Duel in the Desert Tournament MVP. With the win, Marist moved to 9-2 on the season and has won its last five games and third in as many days. The reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week, Allenspach shot 11-for-18 from the field, 5-for-8 from three-point range and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. She also grabbed eight rebounds, including five on the offensive end, and added two assists and a steal. Marist also got nine points from junior guard Corielle Yarde and freshman Leanne Ockenden netted eight points and two triples. Houston (8-2) scored the first five points of the game over a span of 2:08 to vault the Cougars to a 5-0 lead. However, at the 13:55 mark, senior Elise Caron used a layup to spark a 6-0 run over a span of 1:23 to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Classmate Maria Laterza gave the Red Foxes a lead with 13:31 to play in the first half, and the run closed with a triple by freshman Emma O Connor Following the run Marist led by four, 15-11, with 12:32 remaining in the opening stanza. Marist used a 7-0 run to push the lead to 12 points with 4:53 remaining in the period. Laterza opened the run with a second chance opportunity, and Allenspach closed the run with five straight points to make the score in favor of the Red Foxes. Sophomore Kelsey Beynnon netted layups on consecutive possessions that helped Marist to a 14-point advantage, 39-25, at halftime. RIDER) HEAD COACH BRIAN GIORGIS NINTH SEASON SUNY CORTLAND, 1977 CAREER RECORD: FOUR-TIME MAAC COACH OF THE YEAR Brian Giorgis is in his ninth season as head coach of the Marist women s basketball team, and is the program s all-time leader in wins. His career record stands at and his.758 winning percentage is 10th best among active Division I coaches. In his first eight seasons in Poughkeepsie, Giorgis has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times - twice outright ( , ), and a share of the award on two other occasions ( , ). Giorgis, a 2010 inductee into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, had led the program to national prominence in his first eight seasons. Last season, the Red Foxes reached their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament and their sixth in seven years. Marist also won its seventh consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title with a 15-3 mark in the MAAC, and finished two games ahead of the second-place team, Iona. Beyond his success on the floor, Giorgis has also led his program to participate in a number of initiatives within the basketball and local communities. Since taking over the program in , the Red Foxes have helped to raise funds for a number of different causes. The team has volunteered with the Special Olympics and Kids Day Out, a one-day clinic sponsored by to benefit students with disabilities. Additionally, the Red Foxes have worked with the WBCA in its efforts to promote breast cancer awareness with an annual Pink Zone contest. The women s basketball program also works with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which attempts to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the Associated Press Top 25 that season as well, and was ranked for three weeks. For his efforts, Giorgis was named the Maggie Dixon Coach of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association. In , the Red Foxes set a new program record with 32 wins. Marist posted an 18-0 record in the MAAC, the first team to do so since the conference expanded to 10 teams, and won its fifth consecutive regular season title. The Red Foxes also earned their first in-season ranking in when the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll ranked them 25th on Feb. 12. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the poll by the end of the regular season. A record 21-game winning streak propelled Marist to its fourth MAAC Tournament title and a seventh-seed in the New Orleans Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes embarked on winning streaks of seven and 12 games as they claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season crown for the third straight season. In , Giorgis guided Marist to a 22-win season, which included a then program-record 16-game winning streak. After starting the MAAC season 0-3, the Red Foxes closed it with 15 consecutive triumphs to earn the top seed in the MAAC Tournament for the first time. The season was historical, as it was the first time the Red Foxes earned a berth in the NCAA tournament in what became known as a season of firsts. Additionally, Marist earned its first share of a MAAC regular-season title and compiled its first winning record in 11 years. Giorgis first campaign laid the foundation for future success. Taking over a team in which had lost the fourth- and fifth-leading scorers in program history to graduation the prior year, Giorgis team improved its win total from 11 to 13. The Red Foxes also earned their first win in a MAAC Tournament game in school history with a first-round triumph over Loyola. Prior to his arrival at Marist, Giorgis enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie. In his final season there, the girls basketball team finished with a fourth-place national ranking in the USA Today poll and earned its fourth straight New York State Federation Championship. He earned WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors, was runner-up for WBCA National Coach of the Year honors and was selected to coach at the Phoenix/WBCA High School All-America Game. As the head girls basketball coach at Lourdes, Giorgis posted an astounding record of in his 19 seasons, good for a winning percentage of.911. He won nine state championships with the Warriors. In his last two years, his teams posted a combined mark of 56-2 and earned the top ranking in the Madison Square Garden Tri-State Area Poll each year. Giorgis has earned two WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors and two coach of the year awards from the New York State Coaches Association. He led Lourdes to the league title all 19 of his seasons there and won 15 Section I crowns, with the last 11 coming consecutively. He is the only coach in state history to take four teams to the state Final Four in his career, as he also guided the baseball, softball and volleyball teams there.
