The Golden Eagles, winners of four of their last seven games, has captured fi ve of the last six games against the Owls. The team is 7-7 over the last 14 games after dropping its fi rst six contests to start the season. The Golden Eagles have used 10 different starting combinations this season. The current starting fi ve of Khari Price, Kourtlin, Keljin Blevins, Quinton Campbell and Raheem Watts have been used nine times and have started in each of the last seven games. Price is the only Golden Eagle to start in all 20 games. lost the services of Eddie Davis III, who suffered a foot injury in late December, and he will be lost for the remainder of the season. In addition, senior Michael O Donnell returned to action Thursday against North Texas after missing six games with a shoulder injury. Khari Price collected his second double-double of the season against UTSA with 12 points and 11 assists. The 49ers returned for the season. 2 Junior Raheem Watts has enjoyed fi ne shooting performances over the last three games, hitting 13-of-25 from the fl oor and 7-of-13 from 3-point range. Heading into the UTEP game last week, he was 3-of-22 from 3-point range, but is now 10-of-35 after his strong performances last week. He led the Golden Eagles in scoring Thursday with 15 points. 3 The Golden Eagles rank second in Conference USA in scoring defense, allowing just 66.8 points per contest. has limited its opposition to 60 points or less seven times this season and are 4-3 in those contests. 4 Kourtlin produced his fourth 20-plus scoring game when he poured in a team-best 20 points last week versus UTSA. He has scored in double fi gures in eight of the last 10 games. 5 The Golden Eagles are shooting 71.3 percent from the free throw line this season, which ranks tied for third currently in Conference USA. DENTON, Texas -- J Mychal Reese led four North Texas players with 19 points to lead the Mean Green to a Conference USA victory over Thursday at The Super Pit. Along with Reese in the double figure scoring column, Jeremy Combs chipped in 14, Ja Michael Brown added 12 and Rickey Brice, Jr., collected 11 off the bench. Raheem Watts paced the Golden Eagle attack with 15 points, while Quinton Campbell, Kourtlin and Khari Price added nine apiece for the visitors. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles as well as eight consecutive wins over the Mean Green. The Golden Eagles, which entered the game as the secondbest free throw shooting team in C-USA, shot a season-low 47.8 percent by converting just 11-of-23 for the game. North Texas also scored 31 points off of 17 turnovers in the contest which also proved to be a big difference as well in the outcome. Despite trailing the entire first half after opening the game behind 7-1, the Golden Eagles kept the game close over the first 20 minutes. Michael Ramey closed the gap to two points at with 7:50 remaining as that was the closed Southern Miss got to the home squad in the first half as they trailed at the intermission. The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 7-2 run on a 3-pointer by Campbell, a bucket by and two free throws from Watts to take their first lead at with 14:41 to play, but then went almost seven minutes without a bucket and the Mean Green went over a 14-4 run over that span to take a advantage. North Texas converted its last basket with 3:52 left on a 3-pointer by Deckie Johnson, but made nine of 10 free throws from the point to help seal the contest. The Mean Green hit 16-of-21 free throws for 76.2 percent in the final half and finished the game at 80 percent (20-of-25)., which had shot the ball well as of late, converted just 36.7 percent for the contest (18-of-49) and just 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from 3-point range. HOUSTON, Texas scored just four points over the last 7:12 of the game, squandering a 10-point second half lead to fall, 58-56, at Rice. Chip Armelin led the Golden Eagles with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Norville Carey had 15 points and four rebounds and Matt Bingaya added nine points and four boards. Rice led at the half. Andrew Drone opened the half with a jumper, but Bingaya found Carey for a dunk. Two minutes later, Rasham Suarez hit a three-opener to give its first lead of the game, 4:11 into the second half. However, Marcus hit a three for Rice to retake the lead. The teams traded leads over the next two minutes until Armelin s dunk sent the Golden Eagles on a 12-2 run to take a lead with 7:28 to play. However, the Black and Gold went cold and Rice slowly began to chip away at the lead. Seth Gearhart drilled a three, sending the Owls on a 9-0 run over the next 3:48 and cutting the deficit to with 3:40 remaining. Carey got the Golden Eagles back on the board with a jumper, pushing the lead to A minute and a half later, Gearhart made layup and was fouled by Michael O Donnell. Gearhart made the free throw, tying the game at 54 with 1:08 to play. Bingaya then hit a driving layup, but Gearhart immediately followed with a layup his own, retying the game. After a timeout, ran the clock down to nine seconds before Bingaya attempted a jumper. got the rebound for Rice, and, despite the game being tied, was immediately fouled by Armelin with five seconds to play. hit both free throws to put Rice up two, and Bingaya s jumper at the buzzer was off the mark, giving the Owls the victory. The teams started in opposite directions, as made just one of its first six shots, while Rice jumped out to a 9-2 lead through the first 3:39. After the teams traded three-pointers, Carey drained a three-pointer to pull within four. But Marcus and Seth Gearhart hit back-to-back threes to push the lead back to 10, Armelin hit his second three of the half, but a layup by Jeremy Jones and a three from Dan Peera gave Rice a lead. Baskets from Armelin and Carey brought the deficit to single digits, but Jones hit one-of-two free throws and Bishop Mency hit a three to regain Rice s 12-point lead. 4 #ConferenceCorner C-USA Tips Off Its Third Decade Conference USA enters its third decade in as it continues to compete and promote the success of its student-athletes. The league has adapted to the everchanging landscape of collegiate athletics over its fi rst 20 seasons, but the commitment to excellence, integrity, leadership and its student athletes in competition, academics and community is unwavering. C-USA Landscape Conference USA enjoys a far-reaching fan base with its 14 members: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice,, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and WKU. C-USA National Presence Debuting in 1995, Conference USA teams have combined for 102 NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball, including three Final Fours. Success Off the Court Success is not limited to athletic achievement, however, as 197 Conference USA student-athletes have garnered Academic All-America honors, 691 have achieved academic all-district laurels and thousands of studentathletes have earned a college degree. C-USA Competition Conference USA sponsors competition in 19 sports nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and fi eld) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and fi eld, and volleyball). C-USA Academic Achievement C-USA annually awards postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Awards, Scholar-Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. Additionally, Conference USA presents a Spirit of Service Award three times each year, recognizing student-athletes who excel on the fi eld, in the classroom and give back to the community through signifi cant service efforts and participation. #FastBreak Inexperienced returned seven players off of the roster, but only six players who lettered. (Khari Price sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules) This season the Golden Eagles welcomed eight newcomers. The six players who lettered for Southern Miss combined for 10 total letters. Davis Granted Medical Redshirt Eddie Davis III played in four games as a true freshman in before suffering a seasonending injury. The Las Vegas native was granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA preserving his year of eligibility. Davis hurt his foot earlier this month and will likely not see any action for the remainder of the season. 4 #FastBreak...cont. Price Sat Out Due To Transfer Rules Khari Price joined the Golden Eagles after spending two seasons at Dayton. Due to the NCAA Transfer Rules, the Slidell, La., native sat out the season. He started the fi rst game of the season at Memphis, scoring three points with four rebounds and a team-high three assists. During the season, Price averaged 22.4 minutes, 6.2 points and 1.8 assists, while connecting on 88.3-percent of his free throws (53-of-60) during Dayton s historic Elite Eight run. As a freshman, he earned Dayton s Best Defender Award. New Faces The starting lineup in the fi rst game of the season against Memphis consisted of four players seeing their fi rst action in a Golden Eagle uniform Kourtlin (transfer, Iowa State), Khari Price (tranfer, Dayton), Tim Rowe (true freshman), and Raheem Watts (tranfer, Dodge City CC) and one returning letterwinner Keljin Blevins (true sophomore). Blevins played in 25 games during his rookie season of , making 13 starts. The following game against State, redshirt freshman Eddie Davis III made his fi rst collegiate start. Home Sweet Home Over the last three-plus years, has taken care of business on its home court. The Golden Eagles are since 2011 in Reed Green Coliseum, a winning percentage of.792. Since 2011, Southern Miss 30-9 (.769) in home conference games. Non-Conference Success Since the inception of Conference USA, Southern Miss has had the best record against non-conference opponents among current C-USA teams. In the past 20 years, the Golden Eagles are (.655) in nonconference games. In fact, has won 45 of its last 52 non-conference home games. Storied History currently is in its 98th season of basketball in The Golden Eagles have an all-time record of 1,219-1,034 (.541), which includes (.455) in Conference USA action. also has a (.450) mark alltime in conference play. USM has made 14 postseason appearances, including NCAA (3), NIT (10) and CBI (1). Buzzer Beater Khari Price hit a 75-foot buzzer-beater against Alabama to give the Golden Eagles a lead against the Crimson Tide just before halftime. The shot from beyond half court against Alabama was the No. 1 play on SportsCenter s Top 10 on the day after. Clarence Weatherspoon Day The Golden Eagles celebrated Clarence Weatherspoon Day to honor the recent Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductee on Jan. 30 during the UTSA contest. Weatherspoon, affectionately known as Spoon, stands as the school s all-time rebounding and blocks leader as well as second alltime leading scorer. He earned all-metro Conference honors four times during his career at ( ) and was a three-time Player of the Year in the league. Weatherspoon was taken ninth overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, and played 13 seasons in the league.
