Sanford, a preseason All-MAC selection, shoots.462 from the field and.810 from the free throw line and is second on the team in assists (53). Minnie finished with a game-high 25 points. McKay scored 15 points, while David DiLeo and Shawn Roundtree Jr. added 10 apiece for the Chippewas, who did just about everything they needed to do including continuing their season-long torrid pace at the free throw line to beat the Eagles and their fit-inducing 2-3 zone defense. The Chippewas, who entered the game as the nation s top free throw shooting team at 80.7 percent, made a blistering 25 of 27 charity tosses for a season-best 92.6 percent clip. They also battled the Eagles to a near dead heat (31-28 favor of EMU) in the rebounding department. But CMU made just seven of its 25 3-point tries (28 percent) and were outscored in the paint, They entered the game making 34 percent from long range. Keno Davis didn t see the nation s leading scorer go down. Central Michigan guard Marcus Keene was prone on the floor and slapped the court in pain and frustration late in the first half. He was helped out of McGuirk Arena by trainers. CMU owned a lead against Toledo at the time. The question: How would the Chippewas respond with Keene and his 29.3 points per game average gone? No worries. Reserves DaRohn Scott, David DiLeo and Matty Smith worked with steady Braylon Rayson to maintain the lead into halftime. A solid second half -- and the return of Keene -- helped CMU beat Toledo, 96-88, on Friday for its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season. CMU is 11-6 overall, 1-3 in the MAC, and found an answer against another strong big man. This game, the Chippewas worked against Toledo s Steve Taylor Jr., a 6-foot-9, 240-pounder who finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Rockets, 9-8 overall, 2-2 in the MAC. The key on Friday, Davis said, was rebounding. For the first time since a victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec. 3, the Chippewas outrebounded an opponent. Seven CMU players had four or more rebounds as the Chippewas outrebounded Toledo, Keene finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. He returned early in the second half. Rayson led Central with 28 points and had five rebounds and four assists. DiLeo, a freshman, finished with 17 points and four rebounds. The 3s COMPANY The 3-pointer is once again expected to be a central part of the Central Michigan offense in , despite the graduation of the program s all-time long distanceshooting leader, Braylon Rayson, and the nation s No. 2 3-pointer shooter in , Marcus Keene. The Chippewas have broken the program record for 3s in back-to-back-to-back seasons, making 322 in , 324 in and an NCAA-high 399 in CMU ranks second in the NCAA in most 3-pointers made over the last three seasons (1,045), behind only fellow MAC member Akron (1,103). Senior guard Josh Kozinski, who is CMU s leading returning 3-point shooter, ranks seconcd in program history with 263 for his career. Kozinski needs just nine 3-pointers to break the CMU career record for third consecutive season. Sophomore forward David DiLeo demonstrated his 3-point prowess in his first collegiate season, knocking down 64. DiLeo currently ranks first in the MAC with 48 3s. Earlier this season, CMU tied the program record for 3-pointers in a game, making 20 versus Eureka. Entering game 16, the Chippewas rank second in the MAC and 51st nationally in 3-pointers made with 155. BY THE NUMBERS -- A LOOK BACK AT CMU S NONCONFERENCE WINNING STREAK Central Michigan s seven-game winning streak was its longest since the season, when the Chris Kaman-led Chippewas made a late season run to the MAC Championship and the NCAA Tournament. Offensive balance was featured, as three players, Shawn Roundtree Jr. (14.1 ppg), David DiLeo (14.0 pig) and Cecil Williams (13.0 ppg), posted a double-digit scoring average within 1.1 ppg of each other. CMU nearly shot better from 3-point range (.370) that its opponents did from the field overall (.375). CMU shot below its season average of.813 from the free throw line,.788, but that number would still rank No. 14 in the NCAA for the season. CMU made nearly twice as many free throws as its opponents (104-54). Four players -- David DiLeo (7.4 rpg), Cecil Williams (5.7 rpg), Luke Meyer (5.6 rpg) and Kevin McKay (5.4 rpg) - averaged 5.4 rebounds or more. CMU CAPTURES GREAT ALASKA SHOOTOUT TITLE Central Michigan won three games in four days to become the first and only Mid-American Conference team to ever capture a Great Alaska Shootout title, in the 40th and final edition of the historic early-season tournament. The Chippewas downed Sam Houston State (71-60) in the first round, Cal Poly (56-53) in the semifinals and Cal State

7 Bakersfield (75-72) in the championship game. Junior guard Shawn Roundtree Jr. was earned Most Outstanding Player honors while Luke Meyer and Cecil Williams were named to the all-tournament team. Versus Sam Houston State, Roundtree Jr. led CMU, which never trailed in the game, with 20 points while sophomore forward David DiLeo tied a career-high with 11 rebounds. Against Cal Poly, sophomore guard Kevin McKay gave a boost to a struggling CMU offense, scoring 19 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Roundtree Jr., however, provided the finishing touches to the win, draining a 3-pointer with 3.8 remaining to propel CMU to the finals. In the win over Cal State Bakersfield, Roundtree Jr. led four players in double figures, scoring 15 points. Luke Meyer (14), David DiLeo (13) and Cecil Williams (12) also were key. CMU EDGED BY MICHIGAN Central Michigan showed it has an awful lot in its loss to the Wolverines before 8,941 at Crisler Center on Nov. 13. Shawn Roundtree Jr., a junior transfer playing in just his second game as a Chippewa, scored 21 points to lead CMU. CMU led through most of the first half and was down one, 32-31, at halftime. The teams traded the lead several times early in the second half and the Chippewas were up, 47-46, with under 12 minutes to play. Jaaron Simmons hit a 3-pointer with 11:13 remaining to put Michigan in front for good, The Wolverines then crept away to what eventually became a nine-point lead, 62-53, with just over four minutes to play. CMU outrebounded the Wolverines, 34-27, and made 41.7 percent of their 3-point attempts. The Achilles heel for the Chippewas was turnovers. They committed 14 while forcing just six from the Wolverines (2-0). Luke Meyer added 12 points and David DiLeo grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for CMU. Roundtree, a 6-foot guard who transferred to CMU from Mineral Area (Mo.) College, hit seven of his 11 field goal attempts including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman scored 17 points to lead a balanced Michigan attack. BACKCOURT NEWCOMERS Shawn Roundtree Jr. and Gavin Peppers, both junior-college transfers, are doing their part to fill the void left by the departure of the 2017 NCAA scoring champion Marcus Keene and and All-MAC performer Braylon Rayson. Roundtree, who is listed at 6 foot and 185 pounds, played last season at Mineral Area (Mo.) College after two years at Missouri State; Peppers is 6-2, 194, and CMU is his fourth collegiate stop. Peppers began his career at Olympic (Wash.) College in , then spent his sophomore year at Laramie County (Wyo.) Community College. Last year, he was enrolled at Cleveland State, but sat out the entire season with an injury. He left that program when the coaching staff was let go following the season. Peppers averaged 15.6 points per game at Olympic and 18.7 at Laramie County CC. Roundtree appeared in 30 games, two of them starts, at Missouri State in , then missed all but three games because of an injury the following season. Last year, he led Mineral Area to a 28-3 finish while averaging 10.9 points and 3.1 assists. Roundtree made a big splash in just his second game as a Chippewa, posting a game-high 21 points in a narrow loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor. Two weeks later, Roundtree took center stage again, winning Most Outstanding Players honors at the Great Alaska Shootout. CHIPPEWAS SIGN TWO Keno Davis announced the signing of two players during the November signing period who will join his program for the season. The class is comprised of 6-foot-7 forward Kevin Hamlet of Scarborough, Ont., and 6-1 guard P.J. Mitchell of Detroit. They re both extremely talented, and they also have a great basketball upside, Davis said. They re willing to come in and work, help the team and also improve their own individual game. Hamlet is playing this season at Mineral Area (Mo.) College after playing last season at Polk State College in Winter Haven, Fla. At Polk State, he averaged 8.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and earned a spot on the All- Suncoast Second Team. Mitchell is a senior at Detroit Edison High School who has been named to the Detroit News All-State team three times in his career. He played at Detroit Loyola as a freshman and as a sophomore, earning All-Catholic honors both seasons. He was named All-City by the Detroit Public School League last season at Edison. Son, Brady Coaching History Southern Indiana Assistant Coach SE Missouri State Assistant Coach Drake Assistant Coach Drake Head Coach Providence Head Coach 2012-present... Central Michigan Head Coach In five years, Keno Davis has built Central Michigan into a championship-caliber program, both on and off the court. Davis took the reins of the Chippewas before the season and immediately established an exciting brand of basketball featuring up-tempo offense that emphasizes the 3-point shot, giving rise to the program s 3MU moniker. In , that Davis-coached offense ranked third in the nation, averaging an explosive 88.3 points per game, triggered by the dynamic backcourt duo of Marcus Keene and Braylon Rayson, the former the nation s leading scorer. Keene took college basketball by storm in becoming the first NCAA Division I player in 20 years to average 30 points per game and earned All-America honorable mention, the first Chippewa to be so honored since Keene set a Mid-American Conference record by scoring an eye-popping 959 points, the 20th-highest total for a single-season in Division I history. Keene s exploits brought unprecedented attention to Davis program and the university by way of full-length feature stories published by the likes of Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. His highlights were also frequently broadcast on the likes of ESPN s SportsCenter and he was the subject of a feature on the CBS Evening News. Eight times in , Davis Chippewas scored 100 points or more points in a game, and they have hit the century mark 14 times during Davis tenure. The offensive fireworks left the Chippewas ranked in the top 10 nationally in six statistical categories: points per game, 3-point field goals per game, total 3-pointers, 3-point attempts, free throw percentage and total free throws. CMU set program records for field goal attempts, 3-point attempts, 3-pointers made, free throws made and free throw percentage. The Chippewas made pointers, setting the program mark for the third-straight season. Davis guided CMU to a finish in 16-17, the third consecutive season in which CMU has recorded a.500-orbetter mark, the first time the program has accomplished that feat since the late 1970s. In , Davis Chippewas won their second consecutive MAC West title, and also accepted a bid to the Collegeinsider.com Tournament, marking the first time since 1971 that CMU had made back-to-back postseason appearances. The end of the season signaled the end of one era of CMU basketball as Davis said good-bye to a senior class led by Chris Fowler and John Simons. That duo, along with several other key contributors, comprised Davis first CMU recruiting class. The group became the building blocks for the foundation of Davis program, and both Fowler and Simons wrapped up their remarkable careers having left a lasting on the court and off. Simons left as CMU s all-time leader in 3-pointers made and attempted, and was supplanted in both categories the following season by Rayson. Fowler and Keene are among four of the players that Davis has mentored at CMU (Rayshawn Simmons and Kyle Randall are the others) who have gone on to play professionally. In all, 20 players that Davis has coached in his nine years at the helm of three Division I programs have advanced to the pro ranks. In 2016, CMU led the conference with four Academic All-MAC selections, twice as many as any other team, and it marked the third consecutive year that CMU had more players honored for their academic success than any team in the league. Fourteen times in Davis five seasons in charge of the program have Chippewas landed on the league academic honor squad. In , Davis engineered the nation s fifth-largest turnaround and captured CMU s first Mid-American Conference regular-season championship since the season. Central Michigan posted 23 wins, a 13-win improvement from the previous year, tying for the second most in program history. After being selected 11th in the MAC preseason poll, the Chippewas proved to be the class of the conference as they won 12 games, claimed the MAC West title outright, and earned the No. 1 seed for the MAC Tournament. A postseason berth, the program s first in more than a decade, followed as CMU earned a No. 6 seed for the National Invitation Tournament. For orchestrating CMU s historic turnaround, Davis was selected as MAC and National Association of Basketball Coaches District Coach of the Year. In recognition of success achieved on the court and his moral integrity displayed off the court, Davis was also honored with the 2015 Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. Davis continued emphasis on the importance of academics was reflected in the fact that CMU was one of only 19 Division I schools to receive the Team Academic Excellence Award from the NABC. Davis and his assistants have also made inroads in another key area, camps. The attendance number for the 2017 team camp tripled from previous years and CMU hosted more than 1,000 youngsters during its four camps throughout CENTRAL MICHIGAN -12- CHIPPEWAS BASKETBALL

DAVIS BACKGROUND IS STEEPED IN TRADITION AND SUCCESS Davis was introduced by as the Chippewas 20th men s basketball coach on April 3, 2012, bringing four year of Division I head coaching experience. In 2008, Davis was named the coach of the year by six national organizations, including the Associated Press, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, and The Sporting News. In one season at Drake and three at Providence, Davis compiled a (.574) record and made two postseason appearances. In , Davis first as a head coach, he led Drake to a 28-5 record, includeding a 15-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference. His team captured its first MVC regular-season title since 1971, the first MVC Tournament championship in program history, and the Bulldogs made their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since Drake was nationally ranked for a school-record eight consecutive weeks and finished 14th in the Associated Press Poll and 23rd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Davis inherited a team that had graduated four starters from a squad that went in He took a team that was picked to finish 9th in the MVC to the program s first top-25 ranking since Moving to Providence in , Davis guided the Friars to a mark in his first season, including a 10-8 finish in the BIG EAST. The 19 victories was the most for a first-year coach in the history of the program, and two of those wins came over top-15 teams, including Pittsburgh, which was ranked No. 1 nationally when the Friars posted an upset. That Providence squad finished tied for sixth place in the conference after it was picked to finish 12th in the preseason poll. Davis led Providence to its first BIG EAST Tournament victory in six years and into the postseason as the Friars earned an at-large bid to the NIT. In Davis team ranked third in the nation in scoring at 82.4 points per game. Davis has a proven track record of developing players and preparing them for the next level. At Providence, he mentored MarShon Brooks, who was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 25th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft after Brooks had earned multiple All-America honors. Prior to taking over as the head coach at Drake, Davis served as an assistant under his father, Dr. Tom Davis, at Drake from Keno Davis began his coaching career in 1995 as an assistant for two years under Bruce Pearl at Southern Indiana, then served as an assistant under Gary Garner at Southeast Missouri State from Davis was exposed to basketball at a very young age as he watched his father become one of the NCAA s all-time winningest coaches.
