The Runnin' Rebels came in at No. 8 on the list, which ranked 300 programs using a numerical method. The season was selected as a starting point because that is the year when the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams, making it the first time a national champion had to win six tournament games to cut down the nets. According to ESPN.com, that season was also the start of the fairest inclusion in the NCAA Tournament since before that season, even the best conferences got only one team in the field. And with the introduction of the 3-point line in , the past 24 seasons can be considered the most modern era of college basketball, which is also according to ESPN.com. kruger WAs a finalist for national coach of the year UNLV Head Coach Lon Kruger was a finalist for the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Henry Iba Award, which was presented to Keno Davis of Drake. Along with Kruger, other finalists included: Rick Barnes (Texas); John Calipari (Memphis); Mike Krzyzewski (Duke); Sean Miller (Xavier); Matt Painter (Purdue); Bruce Pearl (Tennessee); Rick Pitino (Louisville); Bo Ryan (Wisconsin); Herb Sendek (Arizona State); Kevin Stallings (Vanderbilt). The following are some reasons why Coach Kruger was a National Coach of the Year Candidate Named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year Named the USBWA District VIII Coach of the Year UNLV finished 27-8 overall in and was 12-4 in the Mountain West Conference this season (2nd place) Led UNLV to back-to-back MWC Tournament championships, which was the first time in MWC history that a team has repeated and was UNLV's first consecutive league tournament championships since Kruger led UNLV to back-to-back seasons with at least 22 wins for the first time since and Not only did UNLV lose four starters from the 2007 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team, but also the top player off the bench, who was the MWC Defensive Player of the Year UNLV was also without 62 percent of the scoring, rebounding and minutes played from 2007's Sweet 16 squad UNLV competed in with just a 10-man roster after the loss of three players from the program during the season The Runnin Rebels won with a lineup that averaged 6-feet, 4.5 inches and whose tallest starter was only 6-foot-7-inches Two UNLV starters on the team entered the program as walk-ons Kruger joined the career 400-win club in February, 2008 UNLV's RPI closed at 22 in a year that those outside the program deemed a transition season kruger a "change agent" On Feb. 9, 2008 against Colorado State at the Thomas & Mack Center, head coach Lon Kruger won the 400th game of his career (He currently has 426 career wins). Kruger s journey to the accomplishment is unique. He cemented his place in history as college basketball s greatest change agent in March of 2007 when his UNLV squad advanced to the Sweet 16 in just his third season at the helm of the program. In , he led UNLV to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since 1990 and Five times Kruger has taken over a program and five times within at least four years each time his programs have reigned victorious. It is arguably the most-proven track record of raising programs by one coach. However, that career path makes getting to landmarks such as 400 wins that much more challenging. Of the 23 seasons Kruger has served as a head coach, a majority of the seasons were spent in the early stages of building programs. A 20-win season in his fourth year at Texas-Pan American. He also served as Pan American s athletics director the youngest AD in the nation at the time (he was 29 when he was hired) while also serving as a first-time head coach. The team had won only four games the year prior to Kruger taking over in An Elite Eight appearance in his second season at Kansas State and four NCAA Tournament appearances in his four seasons coaching his alma mater. The Wildcats had failed to reach the tournament in the four seasons prior to Kruger taking over the program in 1986 and were just a combined one game over.500 in the three previous seasons. His team still holds a tie for the school season-single record of 25 wins. The run under Kruger also marks the only time the Kansas State program went to the NCAA Tournament four consecutive seasons. A Final Four appearance and a then-team-record of 29 wins in his fourth season at the University of Florida. The Gators were under investigation by the FBI and NCAA when Kruger took over the program in 1990, with the team coming off of a seven-win season. The unofficial expectations were simple at the time keep the Gators out of trouble and out of the headlines. In addition to cleaning up the program off of the court, his teams went on to win over 100 games in the next six years with four postseason appearances, including a magical run to the Final Four in A Big Ten title for Illinois in his second season with the Fighting Illini and three NCAA Tournament appearances in his four seasons. The Fighting Illini had not captured a Big Ten title in 12 years (and only one in 33 years) when Kruger took over in Illinois had also won just one NCAA Tournament game since it had advanced to the Final Four in In Kruger s three NCAA Tournament appearances in the four seasons, the Illini advanced to the second round each time. A Sweet 16 appearance, a Mountain West Conference Tournament title and a 30-win season in just his third year at UNLV in The once proud Runnin Rebels had not won a game in the NCAA Tournament since 1991 (with just two appearances in 15 years) and had not been ranked nationally since With the season's 27 wins, Kruger led the UNLV program to back-to-back seasons with at least 22 wins for the first time since and and back-to-back seasons with at least 27 wins for the first time since and He was also named the MWC and USBWA District VIII Coach of the Year and led UNLV to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since 1990 and The names keeping company with Kruger tell more of the story. Only four coaches ever have led three different schools to the Sweet 16 since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams Kruger, Rick Pitino, Bill Self and Tubby Smith. Kruger is also just one of three coaches to lead four different schools to NCAA Tournament wins Jim Harrick and Eddie Sutton are the others he is just one of five coaches to ever take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament Lefty Driesell, Harrick, Pitino and Sutton join him. He is also one of just two to lead four schools to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances - Harrick is the other. epicurean charitable foundation scholarship contribution The Epicurean Charitable Foundation of Las Vegas will make a $1000 per game scholarship contribution to the UNLV men's basketball program in the name of the Runnin' Rebel student-athlete who in each game best exemplifies the competitive spirit and determination in giving UNLV its best chance for victory.
