Daskalakis Athletic Center WILLIAM AND MARY TRIBE (6-12, 1-7 CAA) W&M WRAPS UP ROAD TRIBE AT DREXEL The William and Mary men s basketball team will wrap up a three-game CAA road trip at Drexel on Saturday, Jan. 24. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa. W&M dropped a decision on the road at Hofstra on Jan. 21. The Tribe led by two in a low scoring fi rst half, but the Pride shot 46.4 percent in the second half and drilled seven 3-pointers to outdistance W&M. Junior guard David Schneider led the Green and Gold attack with 18 points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Freshman Quinn McDowell fi nished with eight points and a teamhigh three assists. Drexel won its fourth straight game, knocking off Delaware, 79-69, on Jan. 20. Samme Givens led four Dragons in double fi gures with 10 points, while Jamie Harris added 14 points and fi ve assists. STORY LINES - The Green and Gold will look for its third straight win over Drexel after sweeping the season series last year. The College won its fi rst-ever game in Philadelphia, downing the Dragons, 73-72, in overtime, before notching a win in Williamsburg. In total, the Tribe has won three of the last four meeting between the two schools. - Over the last nine games, freshman Quinn McDowell is averaging 10.2 points and a team-best 5.2 rebounds per game. - Junior David Schneider has scored in double fi gures in 13 of the Tribe s last 16 games. He moved into fourth place on the Tribe s career 3-pointers made list with his four against Hofstra. Schneider has connected on pointers for his career. 2 GAME NOTES SCOUTING DREXEL After opening the CAA portion of the schedule at 1-3, Drexel has won its last four games to propel itself into fourth-place in the conference standings at 5-3. Overall, Drexel is 9-8 on the season. The Dragons are coming off a win over Delaware on Jan. 20. Drexel shot 45.8 percent from the fl oor and connected on 22-of-31 from the free throw line to outdistance the Blue Hens. Freshman Samme Givens led four Dragon players in double fi gures with 19 points and six rebounds. Jamie Harris fi nished with 14 points and fi ve assists, while Leon Spencer just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Scott Rodgers rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points in the victory. Spencer is coming off a career week in which he was named CAA co-player of the Week after averaging 16.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. On the year, Spencer is averaging 5.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game off the bench for Drexel. Only one Dragon player is averaging in double fi gures as Scott Rodgers scores 13.4 per game. Six other players average more than 5.4 points per game for the Dragons. Sophomore Gerald Colds is second on the squad at 9.2 points per game, followed by Tramayne Hawthorne and Evan Neisler at 8.8. Neisler is the Dragons top rebounder and ranks fourth in the CAA at 7.1 per game. Harris leads the squad in assists (3.1) and steals (1.3) per game. As a team, Drexel ranks third in the CAA and 61st nationally in defensive fi eld goal percentage. The Dragons are also fi fth in the league in points allowed per game at In league games alone, Drexel is only allowing points to score 59.5 points per game. Drexel leads the all-time series with the Tribe at 14-5, but W&M has won three of the last four meetings over the last two seasons. Last season, W&M swept the season series for the fi rst time. The College claimed the program s fi rst-ever win in Philadelphia, Pa., with a win in January. The Tribe connected on 14 3-pointers in the victory. The pair has put up impressive numbers as starters on the road in the CAA over the last two contests. McDowell led the Tribe with 15 points and nine rebounds at Delaware and over the two games is averaging 11.5 points and a team-best 5.5 rebounds per game. He is also shooting 66.7 percent from the fl oor and 75 percent from 3-point range. Brown, on the other hand, has been more of a fl oor general for the Tribe. He has topped the squad with three assists in each game compared to just one turnover in both contests. He also pulled down a career-best nine rebounds at Delaware. SCHNEIDER FINDING THE STROKE Junior guard David Schneider found his stroke from long range in the Tribe s road loss to Hofstra on Jan. 21. After connecting on only two 3-point fi eld goals in the College s previous three games, Schneider canned 4-of-8 from long range against the Pride and fi nished with a game-high 18 points. In 13 of the College s last 16 games, Schneider has tallied double fi gures. He is third in the CAA and ranks 76th nationally, knocking down pointers per game. ON THE ROAD AGAIN The Tribe will wrap up the fi rst of its two three-game CAA road trips when it travels to Drexel on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Green and Gold started the trip at Delaware on Jan. 17, before trekking to Hempstead, N.Y. to face Hofstra on Jan. 21. Later in the CAA schedule, W&M will travel to James Madison on Feb. 14, before playing at Towson on Feb. 18. After a non-conference game in the ESPNU BracketBusters event, the Tribe makes the trip down to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion. Taking the entire CAA schedule into account, there are only four three-game road trips on the slate. Georgia State and UNC Wilmington are the only other CAA schools to play three straight league games on the road this season. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? Freshman guard Kendrix Brown has stepped up his offensive production for the Tribe over the last fi ve games. Known for his athleticism and ability on the defensive end through the opening half of the season, the rookie from Norfolk, Va., is starting to show his skill on the offensive end of the court as well. Over the last fi ve games, Brown is averaging six points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He started the Tribe s last two games at Delaware and Hofstra, dishing out a team-best three assists compared to just one turnover in each game. Brown enjoyed a career night in the Tribe s setback to James Madison on Jan. 10 as he tallied his fi rst career double-digit scoring performance with 10 points on 4-of-7 from the fl oor. He also added a career-best six rebounds to go along with a team-high two steals. Against both UNC Wilmington and George Mason, Brown tallied seven points. He has also shown the ability to knock down the outside shot, hitting on 37.5 percent of his 3-point attempts on the year. MOVING UP THE CAREER STANDINGS With his four 3-point fi eld goals at Hofstra, junior David Schneider moved into fourthplace on the Tribe s career 3-pointers made list. He currently has 153 for his career and passed Greg Burzell for fourth on the Tribe s career list. In just over two and a half season with the Green and Gold, Schneider has averaged two 3-pointers per game, and at his current pace, he will become the most prolifi c 3-point shooter in school history. Greg Burzell MIGHTY QUINN Over the last nine games, freshman Quinn McDowell has developed into a consistent scoring option for the Tribe. He is averaging 10.2 points and a team-best 5.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 56.1 percent from the fl oor and 82.8 percent from the free throw line. In four of his last eight games, McDowell has scored double-digits, including a career-high 15 points at Delaware. He has not scored fewer than seven points in a game during the stretch. 3 at Drexel, 1/24/09

4 GAME NOTES McDowell has made an impact on the Tribe lineup throughout his rookie season. Appearing in all 18 games with three starts, the Mason, Ohio native ranks third on the team in scoring at 8.6 points per game. He has led the Tribe bench in scoring on 10 occasions this season, including six double-digit showings against Ohio (11 points), Navy (13 points), Liberty (11 points), Harvard (13 points), Northeastern (12) and UNCW (12). He tallied his fi rst career double-double against Harvard on Dec. 31. Along with his stellar scoring and rebound averages, McDowell tops W&M in fi eld goal percentage at 53.3 percent and is shooting 82.1 percent from the foul line. SCHNEIDER FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE Over the last two seasons, junior David Schneider has proven to be one of the best free throw shooters in the CAA. After ranking second in the league in free throw percentage last season at 85.5 percent, Schneider is hitting on a higher percentage this season (87.1 percent) and leads the CAA in the statistical category. As of the latest NCAA rankings released on Jan. 22, Schneider ranks 24th nationally in free throw shooting. His career free throw percentage of 80.7 (209-of-259) currently ranks sixth in W&M history. DISHING IT OUT W&M ranks fourth in the CAA in assists per game at The average is the best for the College since 2004, and at its current pace, the Tribe s assist total for the season would ranks among the top 10 in the program s history. On three occasions, W&M has eclipsed the 20-assist mark. W&M dished out a season-best 23 helpers at Liberty on Nov. 29 and against Haverford on Dec. 20. An even more impressive stats is W&M s percentage of fi eld goals off assists. According to Kenpom.com (as of Jan. 22), the College ranks 35th nationally in assist percentage at 61.8 percent. That means that more than 60 percent of the Tribe s fi eld goals made have come as a result of assists from teammates. The percentage is second among CAA schools. W&M also ranks fourth in the CAA in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.0. ON THE OFFENSIVE GLASS The Tribe has seen a signifi cant increase in offensive rebounding recently. Through the opening fi ve games of the season, W&M averaged just 8.2 offensive rebounds per game, but over the last 12 contests, the Green and Gold has upped that number to 13.8 per contest. In seven of the Tribe s last 13 games, W&M pulled down 16 or more offensive rebounds. Over the previous two seasons combined, W&M only had four games with at least 16 offensive rebounds. In the Tribe s contests against James Madison, George Mason and Delaware recently, W&M pulled down more offensive rebounds than its foes, resulting in a signifi cant advantage in second chance points. The College pulled down 19 offensive rebounds against JMU, leading to a 20-4 advantage in second chance points. Versus Mason, the Green and Gold corralled 14 boards on the offensive end and turned it into an 18-6 cushion in second chance points. In its most recent contest at Delaware, the College pulled down 18 offensive rebounds and fi nished with an advantage in second chance points. DOUBLE-DOUBLES AROUND Junior guard David Schneider became the third Tribe player this season to register a double-double, fi nishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds against George Mason on Jan. 14. Fellow classmate Danny Sumner had a double-double earlier this season against Navy, while freshman Quinn McDowell notched a double-double at home in the Tribe s win over Harvard. It marks the fi rst time since the season that three different Tribe players registered a double-double during the season. Going into this season, no Tribe player had accomplished the feat in three seasons. During the season, four different W&M players registered double-doubles. Nick D Antoni, Zeb Cope, Adam Hess and Corey Cofi eld each had double-doubles during that campaign. STEIN IN CHARGE Over the last two seasons, senior forward Peter Stein has been regarded as the Tribe s top defender, doing numerous things that do not translate over to the box score. Last season, Stein led the Tribe with 20 charges taken and in rebounding at 4.8 per game. He is well on his way to bettering the charge total during his senior season, and he once again tops the team charges taken and rebounding. He is averaging of one charge taken per game and leads the team with 18 on the season. Stein also tops W&M in rebounding at 4.6 per game. The Tribe is outscoring and outrebounding its opponents off the bench this season. W&M is producing 19.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per game off the bench compared to 16.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game from its opposition. In total, the Green and Gold has outscored its foes in 12 of the College s 17 games, while outrebounding its opponents on 12 occasions. On 12 occasions this season, the College has produced a double-digit scorer off the bench. Freshman Quinn McDowell has topped the Tribe in scoring off the bench on 10 occasions, including six double-digit scoring performances. He has also topped the W&M bench in rebounding on 10 occasions. On four different occasions, the College has trailed by double-digits in the second half only to rally and force overtime or have a chance to tie in the waning seconds. Here is a look at the Tribe comebacks: - In the Tribe s contest against George Mason on Jan. 14, W&M trailed by fi ve minutes into the second half, but used a 17-4 run to take a with nine minutes to play. The game was tied with two minutes remaining, but Mason scored six of the fi nal eight points in the game to pull out the win. The Tribe had a chance at a tie on a 3-pointer from the right wing with eight seconds remaining, but the attempt came up short. - Against Navy, the College closed regulation on a 14-2 run to erase at defi cit with 5:13 remaining. Junior Danny Sumner capped the run with a trey from the left wing with 5.9 seconds remaining to tie the game at 66 and force OT. Freshman Quinn McDowell came up with a big shot as well for W&M. The Mason, Ohio native drilled a longball from the right side with just 2.2 seconds left on the clock to push the game to a third overtime session. - In the championship game of the Liberty Thanksgiving Classic, the Tribe trailed with 3:57 left, but came back to send the game to extra sessions. W&M scored 15 of the fi nal 19 points in the second half to force OT. Junior David Schneider sent the game to overtime with a 3-pointer from the left side with 22.4 seconds remaining. - During its most recent affair with Loyola (Chicago), W&M trailed with 4:41 remaining. The College pulled within three points, 64-61, with 28.1 seconds remaining. 6 GAME NOTES CLUTCH FREE THROWS While the Tribe is shooting 69.7 percent from the charity stripe, which ranks fourth in the CAA, on the season, W&M has seen its free throw percent increase dramatically over the fi nal fi ve minutes of regulation and in overtime. The Green and Gold connects on free throws at an 85.1 percent clip during that time frame. Junior guard David Schneider, who leads the CAA at 87.1 percent from the foul line, is a near perfect 31-of-32 from the free throw line in the fi nal fi ve minutes and overtime. The 6-5, 195-pounder led W&M in scoring (12.5 ppg) and rebounding (7 rpg) in the Tribe s split against Harvard and Northeastern. He also shot 64.2 percent from the fl oor and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. In the victory over Harvard, McDowell turned in his fi rst collegiate double-double with career marks in points (13) and rebounds (10). He followed that up with 12 points and four rebounds off the bench at Northeastern. DEFENSE A KEY TO SUCCESS One of the biggest keys to success for the College has been its play on the defensive end. 8 GAME NOTES TRIUMPHANT RETURN After missing a total of 38 games over the last two seasons due to injuries, junior forward Alex Smith has made a big return to the W&M lineup in the College s victories over Haverford and Harvard. Smith missed 29 games last season due to injury, including the fi nal 27 of the year after suffering a season-ending injury in December. The injuries carried over to the season, causing him to miss the opening nine games this season, but Smith returned to the Tribe lineup, playing the College s last eight games, while starting four of those contests. For the season, Smith is averaging 6.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Smith is only averaging 13.2 minutes per game as he works his way back into playing shape, but appeared in a season-best 21 minutes vs. Old Dominion. In his fi rst game back from injury vs. Haverford, he equaled a career-high with 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the fl oor. He connected on his only 3-point fi eld goal attempt and fi n- ished with four rebounds. Smith tallied 10 points and seven rebounds in W&M s most recent contest against Harvard. The Greenville, S.C., native was 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Smith was on the brink of a breakout season last year, before receiving a redshirt. During the summer of 2007, Smith competed for the Panamanian National Team at both the Pan American Games as well as the FIBA Americas Championship. DYNAMIC DUO The Tribe possesses one of the best 1-2 scoring punches in the CAA in juniors Danny Sumner and David Schneider. The pair currently ranks No. 7 and No. 11, respectively, in the league. W&M is one of three schools in the league with two players among the top 12 in scoring. Sumner is averaging 15 points per game, while Schneider is putting in 13.9 points per contest. The duo has accounted for 519 of the Tribe s 1156 points this season, which equates to 44.9 percent. Combined, the pair connects fi ve 3-pointers per game, having knocked down 85 on the year. In all but two games this season, either Sumner or Schneider has led the Tribe in scoring with Sumner leading the way on 10 occasions and Schneider seven times. On four occasions this season, both Sumner and Schneider scored 20 or more points. Getting to the foul line has been a valuable commodity for the Green and Gold. Last season, W&M was 12-1 when connecting on more free throws than its opponent, and so far in , the Tribe is 6-5. Over the last four seasons, W&M is when shooting 20 or more free throws in a game. Last season, the College was 9-2 when attempting 20 or more freebies in a contest and the Green and Gold is 4-3 this year when pulling the trick. It is just as important for the Tribe to connect on its free throw opportunities. W&M was 9-1 last season when making more than 15 free throws in a game. Over the last three seasons, the College has posted a 17-9 mark when connecting on 15 or more free throws. The Tribe s record jumps to 12-2 over the last four seasons when hitting on 20-plus free throws. IMPACT TRANSFER The College has a strong tradition of impact transfers under the direction of sixth-year head coach Tony Shaver. Hawley Smith served as a two-year captain for the Tribe during the 2005 and 2006 seasons after transferring from Temple, while Adam Payton earned All-CAA honors in 2007 after moving to Williamsburg from Vanderbilt. Payton is currently playing professionally in France. W&M has another impact transfer in the fold this season in junior guard Sean McCurdy, who sat out last season after transferring to the College from Arkansas. Despite missing part of the season due to various injuries, McCurdy has started eight of his 12 games this season and is averaging 4.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and a team-best 3.1 assists per game. The Jersey City, N.J., native spent his redshirt year and the off season improving his strength and his jump shot. In two seasons at Arkansas, McCurdy appeared in 61 games, while making six starts, in helping the Razorbacks to the NCAA Tournament twice. MCDOWELL DOUBLE-DOUBLE Freshman forward Quinn McDowell became the second W&M player this year to register a double-double, fi nishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Both totals were season highs as McDowell became the fi rst Tribe rookie since Corey Cofi eld in 2004 to register a double-double. Cofi eld had six double-doubles during his freshman year in on his way to earning CAA Rookie of the Year honors. 10 GAME NOTES THIEVES ON THE COURT In the victory over Haverford, W&M tallied 16 steals, which were the most for the College since the season. The 16 swipes also tied the third-best total for the Tribe since steals became an offi cial statistic during the season. In total, eight of the 10 Tribe players that saw action against the Fords tallied a steal. Senior Peter Stein, junior Sean Mc- Curdy and freshman Quinn McDowell each fi nished with three steals, while juniors Alex Smith and David Schneider each registered a pair of swipes. It marks the fi fth time since the steals became an offi cial NCAA statistic that W&M has tallied 16 or more in a game. The College attempted a program-high 46 3-pointers, bettering the previous mark of 39 set last season in a victory over UNC Wilmington. The total also topped the CAA record of 45 attempted by VCU in 2003 and Navy in Junior guard David Schneider not only bettered the W&M school record for 3-pointers attempted in a game with 23, but also topped the CAA mark. The previous school mark as well as the CAA record was 16 by W&M s Greg Burzell at Richmond in AS TOUGH AS NAILS Junior guard David Schneider is an all-out type of player, who gives it everything he has game after game. That statement was no more evident than in the Tribe s most recent double-overtime game at Liberty. With less than two minutes remaining in the opening half, Schneider dove out of bounds to save the ball that resulted in a fast-break lay-up for the Tribe. On the dive, Schneider hit a guard rail that surrounded the playing fl oor and separated the fans from the court. He lost a tooth and needed stitches on two facial cuts. The injury did not impact the junior guard s effectiveness as he came out in the second half and went on to fi nish with a game-high 23 points on seven 3-pointers. One of those treys came with 22.4 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 60 and send it to OT. OVERTIME In the championship game of the Liberty Thanksgiving Classic, W&M played its second multiple overtime game of the season. In fact, the Tribe played a triple overtime game against Navy (Nov. 22) and a double overtime contest vs. Liberty (Nov. 29) in a week time frame. It marked the fi rst time in school history that W&M played a triple OT and double OT game in the same season. The only other time W&M played two multiple OT games in a season was during the season when it played two double OT games against East Carolina and Davidson. Those two games came nine days apart on Jan. 30, 1979 and Feb. 8, The Tribe s triple overtime setback to Navy on Nov. 22 marked the fi fth time in W&M history that the program played three overtime periods. During the streak, the Fairfax, Va., native added 20 points against South Carolina State (Nov. 28), 24 vs. Norfolk State (Nov. 19), a career-high 30 points against Navy (Nov. 22) and 21 points vs. Radford (Nov. 25). He became the fi rst Tribe player since Bob Sherwood during the season to tally fi ve straight games of 20 or more points. Sherwood had six consecutive games of 20-plus points against Richmond (21), at Duke (22), George Washington (20), Virginia Tech (23), VMI (22) and Virginia (20). 30 AND 10 Junior Danny Sumner was sensational for the Tribe in its tripled overtime loss to Navy, fi nishing with the program s fi rst double-double in three seasons with 30 points and 11 rebounds. The 6-7 wing averaged 27 points and eight rebounds per game in the Tribe s fi rst two home games of the season and shared the honor with Northeastern s Matt Janning. In the home-opener against Norfolk State, Sumner scored a then-career high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the fl oor in leading the College to a win. The Fairfax, Va., native followed that performance by eclipsing his career mark for the second straight night, scoring 30 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. It was the fi rst W&M double-double in three seasons. Sumner was 11-of-22 from the fl oor and 4-of-9 from 3-point range against the Midshipmen. With just fi ve seconds remaining in regulation, the Tribe junior knocked down a trey from the left side to cap a 12-point W&M rally and send the game to OT. For the week, Sumner shot 60.6 percent (20-of-35) from the fl oor and 50 percent (7-of-14) from 3-point range. SCHNEIDER IN THE RECORD BOOKS Junior David Schneider has already etched his name into the Tribe record books in a number of capacities. He ranks among the W&M career leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio, minutes per game, minutes played, 3-pointers made, 3-pointers attempted, 3-pointers made per game, assists per game, assists, steals, steals per game and free throw percentage. Senior Peter Stein, juniors David Schneider and Sean McCurdy, sophomores Marcus Kitts and Matt McFadden as well as freshman Quinn McDowell are second-generation college athletes. Three fathers played basketball collegiately, while three more were college football players. Schneider s father, Jeff, played basketball at Virginia Tech, before being drafted in the fi fth round of the 1982 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. McCurdy s father, Bob, was an All-American at the University of Richmond after leading the nation in scoring during the 1975 season. McFadden s father, John, played basketball for four years at Rutgers. Kitts father, Jon, played college football at Central Michigan from , while Mc- Dowell s father, Dave, graduated from W&M in 1985 and played football for current Tribe head coach Jimmye Laycock. Stein s father, Mike, played football at Princeton from NEW FACES ON STAFF While every year bring new faces to collegiate programs in form of players, W&M also added two new assistant coaches and a new director of basketball operations during the offseason. Former assistant coaches Dee Vick and Antwon Jackson left W&M for opportunities as the head coach at Hampden-Sydney College and an assistant coach at UMass, respectively. Those two vacancies paved the way for the hiring of Jamion Christian and Jonathan Holmes as assistant coaches. Both young coaches bring experience as both collegiate players and coaches. Coupled with third-year assistant Ben Wilkins, the Tribe s assistant coaching staff is one of the youngest in the country. Christian spent the last two seasons on staff at Bucknell University. In Christian s fi rst season with the Bison during the campaign, Bucknell fi nished with a 22-9 mark and advanced to the Patriot League Championship game before falling to Holy Cross. As a player, Christian was the VHSL Group A State Player of the Year at New Kent, before playing at Mount St. Mary s where he was a three-year captain. Holmes has enjoyed coaching stops at Montreat College and Francis Marion University. He furthers the Tribe s North Carolina connection, having played four years for the Tar Heels. Holmes was runner-up for Indiana s Mr. Basketball as a high school senior, before helping North Carolina to the 2000 Final Four. The Tribe also added David Kontaxis to the program as the director of basketball operations during the offseason. Kontaxis spent seven seasons as a basketball coach at Central High School in Capitol Heights, Md. 12 GAME NOTES KYLE GAILLARD, MATT RUM SIGN WITH TRIBE William and Mary head men s basketball coach Tony Shaver announced the signing of Kyle Gaillard (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) and Matt Rum (Chapel Hill, N.C./Loyola Blakefi eld) to National Letters of Intent. Both players will be eligible to compete for the Tribe during the season. Kyle Gaillard (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) Gaillard is a three-year letterwinner for Duane Lewis at North Mecklenburg, where he helped propel the Vikings to the MECA-7 regular season championship and a North Carolina 4A Sectional Championship as a junior in The 6-7 lefty averaged 17 points per game for one of the top teams in the state of North Carolina last season, while shooting 43 percent from 3-point range. He was named to the MECA-7 All-Conference team and received all-region honors. Gaillard grew four inches between his sophomore and junior years of high school and is listed as a two-star recruit by Scout.com. He was ranked the 47th best small forward prospect in the class of 2009 by ESPN.com. As one of the top underclassmen in the state of North Carolina, Gaillard was invited to participate in the second annual Carolina Challenge in 2008 by national recruiting analyst Dave Telep. Prior to signing with the Tribe, Gaillard gained recruiting interest from Penn State, Michigan, Davidson and Winthrop. He was recently named a McDonald s All-American nominee. During his high school career, Gaillard was named North Mecklenburg s Most Improved player in This coming season, he will serve as the Viking s team captain. Also during his high school career, Gaillard was a two-year letterwinner as a pitcher on the North Mecklenburg varsity baseball team. During his AAU career, Gaillard was a part of six different teams that won North Carolina State Championships. He played for the Carolina Flight 11U-16U and the Charlotte Royals 17U. He participated in the 2008 Hoops Group Elite Camp and was named to two of their Super Seven lists, while playing in the summer event that included over 3,400 athletes. Hoops Group Elite ranked Gaillard the No. 6 in Best Player from Outside the Northeast list and also ranked him No. 3 in Best Players from North Carolina list. Kyle is the son of Jill and Ted Gaillard and was born on April 15, 1991 in Naperville, Ill. His father, Ted, played baseball at the University of Delaware from At North Mecklenburg, Kyle was a Junior Marshall for the 2008 Graduating Class and was chosen based on his top 50 academic standing in the junior class of 525 students. As a senior in high school, Kyle was voted homecoming king at North Mecklenburg. Matt Rum (Chapel Hill, N.C./Loyola Blakefield) Rum signs with the Tribe as one of the top players in the Baltimore area. As a junior, the 6-3 guard was named to the All MIAA A Conference, All-Baltimore Catholic League and All-Baltimore County. Rum led Loyola Blakefi eld to the semifi nals of the BCL playoffs for the fi rst time since 1998 as he averaged 15.7 points per game, 5.7 rebounds and knocked down 44 3-point fi eld goals. The Baltimore Catholic League is nationally known for its level of play, including producing numerous Division I and NBA players. Rum also was named the MVP of Gilman High School Holiday Tournament as a junior. During his sophomore year at Loyola, Rum averaged 14.8 points per game, while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range. He highlighted the campaign by knocking down eight 3- pointers on his way to a career-high 30 points in a victory over Archbishop Curley. Over his career at Loyola Blakefi eld, Rum has scored 720 points and knocked down 91 3-point fi eld goals. Rum also received recruiting interest from Towson, Radford and Boston University. He played AAU basketball for Severna Park/Maryland 3D and is listed as a two-star recruit by Scout.com. Rum grew up in Chapel Hill, N.C., prior to moving to Baltimore for high school. He played AAU for the North Carolina Gators out of Greensboro and helped the program to 13U and 14U state champions. As a youth, Rum was a ball boy at Duke University in 2000 when the Blue Devils had the likes of current and former NBA players Mike Dunleavy, Jr., Carlos Boozer, Shane Battier and Jason Williams. He is one of the fi rst former Duke ball boys to earn a Division I scholarship to play basketball. Rum also had the opportunity to play HORSE against ESPN college basketball guru and Hall of Famer Dick Vitale during his time as a Blue Devil ball boy. Matt is the son of Steve and Carol Rum and was born Nov. 9, 1989 in Alexandria, Va. His father, Steve, played professional baseball in Italy and Japan and is currently the senior associate vice president for development and alumni relations at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Along with his athletic exploits, Matt has also been involved with numerous community service projects, including Special Olympics and day camps for Eagle Scouts. 16 HEAD COACH TONY SHAVER TONYSHAVER TONYSHAVER Head Coach Sixth at W W&M When Tony Shaver accepted the head coaching position at William and Mary in May of 2003, he set his sights on making the Tribe a winning program. Fast-forward five years and the two-time CAA Coach of the Year and National Mid-Major Coach of the Year finalist has led a revival of the Green and Gold program, and last season, took it to the brink of its first-ever CAA title and NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite all the recent success, Shaver s vision and intensity to win has not wavered. I do not want anyone to limit the vision of our program, Shaver said. We expect our teams to win and the last two seasons have been exceptional steps toward where we know our program can be. In , William and Mary posted its first winning season in a decade finishing with a ledger. In fact it was only the sixth time in school history that a Tribe team had won 17 or more contests. W&M also finished fifth in the league on the strength of a 10-8 CAA ledger. It marked only the second time in the Tribe s 23-year history in the CAA that it has won doubledigit games. Over the last two seasons, W&M ranks fifth in the league in conference wins with 18. The stat demonstrates the rising success of the Tribe program, given W&M won only 10 CAA games in Shaver s first three seasons at the helm. In five seasons at the helm of the William and Mary men s basketball program, Tony Shaver has turned the William and Mary men s basketball program into a winner. Over the last two seasons, the program posted backto-back 15-plus win seasons for the first time in a quarter of a century. The Tribe also put together consecutive seasons with a.500 or better record for the first time in 23 years. Shaver was voted the 2008 CAA Coach of the Year by the league s media, coaches and sports information directors. The Shaver-led Tribe punctuated the honor by reeling off three-straight last-second wins on its way to the CAA Championship Game. Included in the run was a win over regular season champion and No. 1 seed VCU in the semifinals. W&M won three contests to get to the championship game, matching the program s victory total in the tournament from the previous 22 years. As a result of the title game appearance, W&M had its first-ever national televised game and made its first appearance on ESPN. The Tribe accomplished numerous other milestones during the historic season. W&M established not only school records, but CAA marks for 3-pointers made (257) and attempted (755) in a season. The Tribe also bettered the school standard for 3-pointers per game (7.79), double-digit 3-point efforts in a season (9) and consecutive double-digit 3-point shooting performances (5). Shaver engineered a quartet of double-digit comebacks for the Tribe in 2008, including three straight in wins over James Madison (1/9), at Georgia State (1/12) and against Northeastern (1/16). It marked the first time in school history W&M overcame two-straight double-digit secondhalf deficits, let alone three. The Tribe s 16-point second-half comeback at Georgia State was the largest deficit that W&M overcame on the road in 15 years. Shaver also reached a coaching milestone of his own on December 31, 2007, winning his 400th collegiate coaching game as the Tribe defeated Fairfield, 71-50, at Kaplan Arena. W&M demonstrated its mettle as a winning team with not only its ability to overcame deficits, but also with being able to win close games. The Tribe won more than half its games (nine) when trailing at the half. W&M also won nine games by four or fewer points this season, bettering the total (six) from Shaver s first four seasons at the helm of the program. The Tribe put together a six-game CAA winning streak from Jan. 5 through Jan. 23, which marked only the third such league winning streak in Tribe history. Shaver also guided the Tribe to four straight CAA road wins in It equaled the program s longest CAA mark and was the second-longest single-season road winning streak in school history. In , Shaver earned CollegeInsider.com Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Tribe to a record. It marked just the second time in the last 20 years W&M had won 15 games. at Drexel, 1/24/09 Shaver also led his troops to eight wins during the tough CAA portion; only the third time the Tribe has accomplished that feat. Another telling stat of the progression of the program was the four CAA road victories, highlighted by a win over 2006 Final Four participant George Mason. In Shaver s first four seasons, W&M had won only three road affairs. The season brought about a change in styles for the 31st W&M head coach. After spending much of his career coaching an up-tempo offense, featuring a trapping defense, Shaver switched over to a more perimeter-oriented attack last season. The Tribe offensive scheme now spreads the floor and relies on spacing, effective perimeter shooting and players reading and reacting to teammates cuts and motion. Defensively, W&M employs a plethora of defensive systems to throw off opposing offenses. The new style led to the Tribe ranking among the top 50 in the country in 3-point field goal defense as well as holding its opponents to 64.2 points per game, the best mark since the season. The College also established school records for 3-point field goals made and 3-point field goals attempted. The success of the new approach was never more evident than in the Tribe s Feb. 14 victory over eventual National Invitational Tournament participant Drexel, 60-47, in Williamsburg. It was the lowest point production for Drexel in four seasons, and marked the highest ranked team, in terms of RPI, that W&M had defeated since There have been individual successes as well for the Green and Gold under Shaver s reign. On five occasions, a W&M player has been named All-CAA under Shaver, while another four have been named to the CAA All-Rookie Team graduate Adam Hess, currently playing professionally in France, became the first player in school history to lead the CAA in scoring. An outstanding student and athlete, Hess was named the CAA Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year (for all sports) and was a First-Team Academic All-American and all-conference selection as a senior. Corey Cofield was voted the 2004 CAA Rookie of the Year, leading all freshmen in the league in points, rebounds and field goal percentage. W&M players have also enjoyed success in the classroom under Shaver, as on 10 occasions a Tribe player has been named to the CAA All-Academic team over the last five seasons, including a program-high thee in 2007 and This past season, junior David Schneider garnered the third CAA Men s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award under Shaver. In total, four former W&M athletes who played under Shaver have gone on to or will shortly begin professional careers overseas. Hess is currently playing his second season for Artland in the German Bundesliga. He spent last season in France after earning Second-Team All-Bundesliga honors with Artland in Fellow 2004 graduate Zeb Cope is in his sixth professional season overseas and third in France. He is playing in the French Pro A League with JDA Dijon Bourgogne. Adam Payton, a 2007 graduate of W&M, completed his first season in 2008 with BC Boncourt in Switzerland and signed with Lille Metropole in the French N1 League. Laimis Kisielius, who graduated last season, will begin his professional career in Europe in the fall. 16
