The Utes won the only other meeting, 83-72, back on Nov. 21, 2008, in Daytona Beach, Fla. Utah wrapped up its three-game home stand to open the season with a over another SEC foe, Missouri, this past Thursday evening at the Huntsman Center. With its win over Missouri, Utah is now all-time against opponents from the SEC. The Utes have won three straight over SEC opponents, with its last loss coming back in 2003 (at LSU, 51-65). Freshman Donnie Tillman registered his first career double-double against the Tigers, posting 12 points and pulling down a gamehigh 10 rebounds. Senior David Collette led the team with 17 points, which included knocking down his first three-pointer of the season and going 6-of-7 from the free throw line. The Utes and Rebels will square-off in the first round of the four-team tournament on Monday, Nov. 20, with a tip-off scheduled for 9:30 p.m. PST/10:30 p.m. MST at T-Mobile Arena. The other two teams, Rice and UNLV, will play in the game prior to Utah/Ole Miss with both the winners and losers from each game facing each other on Wednesday. The consolation game will tip-off at 7 p.m. PST, while the championship event will follow at 9:30 p.m. PST. COVERING THE RUNNIN UTES Monday s contest will be televised live on AT&T SportsNet with Tony Cordasco calling the action and Marcus Banks providing color commentary. Lewis Johnson will provide commentary from the sidelines. Wednesday s contests of the MGM Main Event will be aired via the ESPN family of networks. The consolation game will be televised on ESPNU, while the championship game will be televised on ESPN2. Sam Farber will call play-by-play, while Adrian Branch provides color commentary. Fans can also follow Wednesday s action on-line by logging onto watchespn.com or watching via smart phones and tablets using the ESPN or WatchESPN Apps, which can be downloaded at the Apple Store, Google Play Store or Amazon Apps Store. LAST TIME OUT The Runnin Utes wrapped up its three-game home stand with a win over Missouri this past Thursday at the Huntsman Center. Utah had five players score in double-figures and were led by senior David Collette s 17 points overall. Senior Tyler Rawson chipped in with 12 points, freshman Donnie Tillman added 11 points, while both senior Gabe Bealer and sophomore Jayce Johnson tallied 10 each on the evening. Utah shot 46 percent from the field, which included a 32 percent effort from downtown, and limited the Tigers to a just a 34 percent effort on the evening. The Runnin Ute defense forced 14 turnovers that led to 17 points and blocked five shots on the evening. SCOUTING OLE MISS Ole Miss has won three straight to open the season and is coming off a home-win over Georgia State this past Friday evening. The Rebels shot 44 percent from the field and gave up 45 percent to GSU, but managed to make one more three-pointer and convert 22-of-30 from the free throw line, while GSU converted 16-of-22 from the charity stripe. Terence Davis led the Rebels with 24 points and Markel Crawfor chipped in with 15 points for Ole Miss. Davis leads the team on the season averaging 20.3 points per game and shooting 53 percent from the field, which includes a 42 percent effort from downtown. Marcanvis Hymon leads the team on the boards with 9.0 rebounds per game. He also has a team-high five blocked shots. The Rebels shoot 48 percent from the field as a team, 37 percent from the three-point line and 70 percent from the charity stripe. SCOUTING UNLV/RICE UNLV is 3-0 on the season after defeating Eastern Washington, 91-76, this past Friday in Las Vegas. The Rebels have four players scoring in double-figures, including team-leader Brandon McCoy, who has a 19.0 points per game average. Jovan Mooring follows with 15.7 points. Shakur Juiston, who averages 15.0 points per game, also leads the team with 13.3 rebounds per game. Rice is coming off an road win against Northwestern State and is now 1-2 on the season. Connor Cashaw leads the team in both points (17.3) and rebounds (8.3). Ako Adams follows with 13.0 points per game. SERIES HISTORY Utah and Ole Miss has met on just one prior occasion, with the Utes downing the Rebels, 83-72, back on Nov. 21, The two teams met on a neutral court in the first game of the Glenn Wilkes Classic, which took place in Daytona Beach, Fla. Utah and UNLV have a previous history that dates back to when both teams were members of the Mountain West Conference. UNLV leads the all-time series, 24-23, but the Utes won the last time the two teams met, 59-46, back on Dec. 20, 2014, in Las Vegas. The Utes lead the all-time series against Rice, 6-1, which includes a victory over the Owls in the last meeting. Utah downed Rice back on Nov. 25, 2006, in Salt Lake City. Rice s only win over Utah was a victory that went into three overtimes back on Dec. 3, 2005, in Houston. Should Utah and Rice meet up in Las Vegas on Wednesday, it would be the first ever meeting between the two teams on a neutral court. BAREFIELD SCORES 22 POINTS IN SEASON-OPENER Junior Sedrick Barefield led Utah to a season-opening win over Prairie View A&M this past Friday, scoring a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, a 1-of-3 effort from downtown and converting 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Utah has now had a player score at least 20 points in the season-opener for three straight seasons and five of the past seven years. Meanwhile, it was just the second time the Corona, Calif., native scored at least 20 points in a game and the first time since scoring 32 points against San Francisco back on Dec. 22, Barefield s 16 first-half points set a new career-high for points through the first 20 minutes of play, surpassing his previous mark of 11 first-half points, which he scored against PVAMU last season on Dec. 17, DOWNTOWN WITH RAWSON Senior Tyler Rawson scored 16 points in the season-opener against Prairie View A&M on Friday, going 5-for-11 from the field overall and a 3-for-6 effort from the three-point arc. His three trey s are the third-most he has tallied in a game, trailing only the four three-pointers he made last season against both Utah Valley (12/06/16) and Stanford (02/04/17). COLLETTE PERFECT FROM THE FIELD Senior David Collette was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in Friday s season-opener, finishing the game with 17 points. It marked the second time in his career that he shot a perfect field goal percentage and the first since going 8-for-8 against Stephen F. Austin last season (12/25/16). BEALER NOTCHES MULTIPLE CAREER-HIGHS Senior Gabe Bealer registered the best game of his career this past Monday, torching Mississippi Valley State for a careerhigh 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, which included a 6-of-8 effort from beyond the three-point arc. Bealer s six three-pointers made were a new career-high and it also marked the first time a Ute had knocked down at least six three-pointers in a game since Jordan Loveridge made six three-pointers against Southern Utah back on Nov. 13, The Antelope, Calif., native also tied a career-high with seven rebounds on the evening. TILLMAN COLLECTS DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORING EFFORT Freshman Donnie Tillman scored his first career points as a Ute on Monday and finished the evening with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. He was 1-of-2 from three-point range and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. ON THE BOARDS WITH SEELEY Redshirt freshman Chris Seeley registered Utah s first doubledigit rebounding effort of the season on Monday, totaling 12 rebounds in Utah s win over Mississippi Valley State. UTES FROM DEEP Utah knocked down a total of 13 three-pointers in Monday s win over Mississippi Valley State - the teams most threepointers in a single game since knocking down 13 from beyond the arc at Colorado back on Feb. 7, THREE UTES IN DOUBLE-FIGURES Utah had three players register double-digit scoring efforts in Friday s season-opener, with junior Sedrick Barefield leading the way with 22 points, and seniors David Collette (17 points) and Tyler Rawson (16 points) also posting scoring efforts in double-figures. It marked the first time since Jan. 21, 2017, that three Utes scored at least 15 points each in a game. Lorenzo Bonam and former Ute Devon Daniels tallied 24 points, while Kyle Kuzma totaled 22 points in Utah s win over Washington at Alaska Airlines Arena last season. RUNNIN UTES TO OPEN SEASON WITH SIX GAMES IN 14 DAYS Utah will continue its run of six games through the first 14 days of the season when hosting Missouri on Thursday. The Utes, who are coming off a 21-point win in its season-opener this past Friday and a 40-point win over Mississippi Valley State on Monday, will continue its stretch of games with three more contests next week. Next Monday, Utah will head to Las Vegas to play Ole Miss in the first game of the MGM Grand Resorts Main Event at T-Mobile Arena. The Utes will close out the tournament against Rice/UNLV before returning home to host Eastern Washington for its sixth game in 14 days. RUNNIN UTES TO PARTICIPATE IN BEEHIVE CLASSIC Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment has partnered with Utah, BYU, Utah State and Weber State to form a new men s college basketball showcase at Vivint Smart Home Arena, beginning in this season. The Beehive Classic, with Zions Bank as the title sponsor, will feature single-day, round-robin doubleheaders from Utah will open the classic against Utah State in 2017, followed with games against BYU in 2018 and Weber State in UTAH PICKED SEVENTH IN PAC-12 PRESEASON MEDIA POLL The Utah men s basketball team has been picked seventh in the Pac-12 men s basketball preseason poll, the league office announced earlier this season. Voted on by various different media members and outlets that cover the league, Utah garnered 129 of a possible 1,794 points in the poll. Arizona was a near unanimous favorite, receiving 22-of-23 first-place votes and 273 points to land atop the preseason poll. USC was picked to finish second after receiving the other first-place vote and totaled 251 points as the predicted runner-up. UCLA was slotted third with 223 points, followed by Oregon in fourth with 203 points. Stanford rounded out the top five predicted finishers with 182 total points in the poll. Arizona State was picked just ahead of the Utes in sixth with a total of 146 points and Oregon State followed Utah, picked to finish eighth with 125 points. Colorado tallied 112 points and was predicted to finish ninth, while Washington tallied 71 points to come in 10th. California (46 points) and Washington State (33) rounded out the final two teams in the poll. UP NEXT The Utes return home on Friday, Nov. 24, to host Eastern Washington. It will mark the fourth game in eight days for the Utes. Tip-off between the Utes and Eagles is set for 6 p.m. MST in the Huntsman Center. The contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Went (.677) in two seasons at Montana ( ), guiding the Grizzlies to a pair of Big Sky Conference Tournament Championships and two NCAA Tournament berths. Got his first opportunity as a head coach with the CBA s Idaho Stampede ( ), where he guided the team to a (.731) record and a trip to the CBA Finals in his lone season with the squad. Served as an assistant coach with the NBA s Milwaukee Bucks in before being elevated to head coach with 17 games remaining in the season. He compiled a record in his two seasons with the Bucks. Served as an assistant coach with the NBA s New Jersey Nets ( ) alongside head coach Avery Johnson. Was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the second round (28th overall pick) of the 1986 NBA Draft. Also played in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, Utah Jazz, Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in his nine-year playing career. Is the only three-time Big Sky Player of the Year ( ) in the league s history and was a two-time Academic All-American at Montana ( ).
