UP AHEAD: The Miami University women s basketball team opens the on the road as it travels to Austin Peay for a Friday matinee. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. (EST) and it will live on the OVC Digital Network. Tim Bray will have the call on Miami College Sports Live for those who have a subscription. 2. REDHAWKS IN OPENERS: This is the beginning of the 43rd season of women s basketball at Miami. The RedHawks are in their previous 42 opening games. Last season, facing Northern Kentucky in Millett they fell to the Norse This is the first time Miami has started the season on the road since it traveled to Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 9, The Colonels won in overtime in that contest. The last time the RedHawks won their first game of the season on the road was on Nov. 10, 2006 when they defeated Cleveland State, A LOT RETURNS BUT NO SENIORS: Despite having no seniors on its squad, the RedHawks return 10 letterwinners and four returning starters. As a result, Miami has a large majority of its statistical contributions back from last season. The RedHawks return 84.0 percent of their scoring, 81.3 percent of their rebounding, 81.9 percent of their assists, 88.3 percent of their steals and 76.3 percent of their blocks from last year s squad. MIAMI UNIVERSITY, PLEASE When referring to Miami, please use Miami University, Miami University (Ohio) or Miami (Ohio). Please do not use Miami of Ohio, University of Miami of Ohio, etc. The latter are not the proper names for our institution. Also, in 1997, the University began using its new nickname, the RedHawks. The game was the RedHawks only exhibition contest before beginning the regular season next Friday. Freshman guard Lauren Dickerson had a spectacular performance in her first collegiate game. She finished with 26 points on 9-for-16 shooting, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc. Dickerson added six rebounds, four assists and five steals in 35 minutes of action. There were certainly some bright spots, but then there were things that needed to be corrected too. We turned the ball over too much. Defensively we held them to 31 percent (shooting) and forced 23 turnovers. We play exhibitions for a reason and that is to get players under the lights and into situations. We were fortunate enough today to get into a situation. It was a slow start offensively for both teams until Dickerson drained a layup despite being fouled with 5:47 to go in the first quarter. She converted the field goal to give Miami a 5-2 lead. The Red and White fell behind, but a layup from sophomore forward Kendall McCoy, a jumper by junior guard Kayla Brown and a free throw from Dickerson made it The Panthers scored the next four points, but a layup for McCoy gave the RedHawks a lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams came out draining shots to begin the second quarter. Ohio Dominican closed the period on a 13-8 run to take a lead into the break. A layup from Purvis and a jumper by Dickerson got the RedHawks the lead back immediately to begin the third quarter. Dickerson continued her offensive attack with another jumper. Junior guard Jazz Smith then drained a big three-pointer to put Miami on top once again at with 3:27 to go. ABOUT AUSTIN PEAY: The Governors are coming off a season in which they went 8-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference. They return four starters and eight letterwinners from last year s squad. Their top returning scorer is senior center Tearra Banks. She averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last season. In its only exhibition contest, Austin Peay defeated Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday. Banks led the Governors with 23 points and 11 rebounds. SERIES WITH AUSTIN PEAY: Miami holds a perfect 3-0 record all-time against Austin Peay. Last season on Nov. 19, 2015 in Oxford, the RedHawks jumped to an early lead and never looked back as they downed the Governors, Baleigh Reid led MU with 20 points, while Leah Purvis was right behind her with 19. The Red and White held an impressive rebounding advantage in the contest. MIAMI VS. OVC: The Ohio Valley Conference is made up of 12 mid-size schools located in the states of Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Alabama. This is the first of three games Miami has against OVC teams this season. In addition to their 3-0 record against the Governors, the RedHawks are 1-1 vs. Belmont, 1-4 vs. Eastern Illinois, 0-2 vs. UT Martin, 4-9 vs. Eastern Kentucky, 1-2 vs. Murray State, 0-1 vs. Tennessee Tech and 3-1 vs. Morehead State. Miami has never faced Jacksonville State, Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville or Tennessee State. UP NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: Miami hits the road for the first time this season for the quick trip to local rival Northern Kentucky on Tuesday. 6 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L Cleve Wright returns for his fourth season in charge of the Miami women s basketball program. Wright came to the RedHawks after a very successful 11-year run at Gannon that featured five NCAA Tournament appearances and two runs to the Elite Eight. Wright holds a career coaching record of His young Miami team last year saw 94 percent of all its available minutes played by freshman and sophomores. Despite that the RedHawks were 6-5 in non-conference play. Injuries and inexperience caught up with the team in MAC play as it finished 9-21, but now with several veterans, combined with a powerful recruiting class joining them, Wright has the RedHawks ready to take the next step this season. Wright won 70 percent of his games at Gannon ( ), turning the Lady Knights into a Division II powerhouse. In his final season there in 2013, he led Gannon to a 31-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The team finished the season ranked sixth in the country. Wright brought the Lady Knights to the NCAA Tournament in five of the his last seven seasons, with his best year coming in when he was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year after guiding them to a 37-1 record and an NCAA Final Four appearance. He coached seven All-Americans and 37 all-conference selections. The Lady Knights were ranked among the top 25 teams in GPA in eight of his final nine years. In addition, 70 players earned allconference academic honors. Wright joined Gannon after a three-year stint ( ) as the top assistant at Northwestern under head coach June Olkowski. While with the Wildcats, he was responsible for the development of the post players and was the team s recruiting coordinator. His recruiting class in 2001 was rated as the 35th-best in the entire nation by All Star Girls Report, and he was voted as one of the top 25 assistant coaches in Division I in Prior to his time at Northwestern, Wright spent two seasons as an assistant coach with Olkowski at Butler. He also spent four seasons ( ) as the head coach at Southwestern High School in Somerset, Ky., and was an assistant coach at Duke during the season. Wright earned his bachelor s degree from Berea College (Kentucky) in He competed on both the men s basketball and track teams, while serving as a student assistant coach for the women s team. He earned a master s degree in athletic administration from Ball State in 1992, working as a graduate assistant coach there for two seasons ( ).
