California is unranked in both polls. SERIES VS. CALIFORNIA This is the 231st meeting between UCLA and California with the Bruins leading the series (.578). The Bruins lost a heartbreaker last year at Cal in overtime on Feb. 20, It marked the second-straight game in Haas Pavilion that the two teams played an overtime game. UCLA won in 2010 in Berkeley when Michael Roll picked up a loose ball and sank a 13-foot jumper with 1.9 seconds left to give the Bruins a victory. Jamal Boykin, who had given the Bears a lead with a 15-foot jumper that banked in with 21 seconds left, tipped away a pass from the Bruins Jerime Anderson. But Roll grabbed it and made his game-winning shot. In last year s win by California, Malcolm Lee got a friendly bounce from a three-point shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, tied at Jorge Gutierrez scored nine of his game-high 34 points in overtime to lift Cal to the victory. Lee finished with 19 points for UCLA while Tyler Honeycutt was the only other Bruin to reach double figures with 14 points. Mark Sanders-Frison was the only other Golden Bear to reach double figures in scoring with 12 for Cal. Head Coach Ben Howland is 16-7 all-time against California. He has more wins against Cal than any other team he has faced in his 18 years of coaching. HEAD COACH BEN HOWLAND ON THE NATIONAL CHARTS Ben Howland earned his 300th victory of his career with the win over DePaul in the 15th Annual John R. Wooden Classic (Dec. 13, 2008). He is currently (.662), which ranks 35th on the winningest active coaches list by percentage and 50th on the active list by victories. Howland s first career victory was his first game at Northern Arizona in 1994, a victory over New Mexico Highlands. His 100th career victory came in his second season at Pittsburgh in the win at home over Seton Hall (Jan. 13, 2001). His 200th win came in his third season at UCLA with the home win over Delaware State (Nov. 19, 2005). Howland is 19-9 (.679) in the NCAA Tournament (15-6 (.714) at UCLA). BRUINS INJURY REPORT Junior guard De End Parker has missed the last 11 games with patellar tendinitis and is out for the game against California (Dec. 31). 3 UCLA has four McDonald s All-Americans on its roster in senior guard Larry Drew II (2008), sophomore forwards Travis and David Wear (2009) and freshman center Joshua Smith (2010). UCLA is the all-time leader (since 1948) in NBA Draft picks with 108, followed by Kentucky (102), North Carolina (101) and Duke (77). The Bruins have had at least one NBA Draft pick in 14 of the last 15 years (none in 2010) and 22 overall picks during that span, including eight firstround selections. UCLA has produced 12 NBA Draft picks in Ben Howland s eight seasons (entering his ninth year), including six first-rounders. Additionally, Howland has had multiple draft picks in the same year in four of his eight seasons, including a high of three (two lottery picks in Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love and a second-round selection in Luc Richard Mbah a Moute) in The Bruins were ranked in the Associated Press Poll for 75 straight weeks (from the preseason poll to the final poll of the season). That streak was the longest in the nation at the time. The Bruins were never ranked at any time during the and seasons. UCLA was ranked No. 17 in the AP Poll and at No. 20 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll to start the campaign. In the last six years in Pacific-12 Conference play, UCLA is (.636) on the road (35-14 everywhere, excluding Seattle) and (.815) at home. In the last six years, Head Coach Ben Howland and UCLA are 43-6 (.878) in the first game of a twogame Pac-12 weekend series and (.604) in the second game (this doesn t include USC and non-conference weekends). The Bruins had won 32 consecutive games opening a Pac-10 weekend series until a loss at Arizona State (Feb. 12, 2009). Overall, UCLA is (.815) in the opening game of a weekend series, but just (.547) in the second game. UCLA has held 96 opponents under 60 points in the Ben Howland era (in 9th season) and is 93-3 (.969) in those contests. UCLA s scoring defense of 66.3 ppg in was the second highest only to the season s average of 68.6 ppg in the last six years. UCLA allowed fewer than 60 points per game in the three seasons it reached the Final Four (59.0 in 2008, 59.9 in 2007 and 58.7 in 2006). 4 UCLA became one of only three schools in the history of college basketball to win 30 or more games in three straight seasons ( ). The Bruins join Kentucky ( /Adolph Rupp), Kentucky ( /Rick Pitino (2)/Tubby Smith (1)) and Memphis ( /John Calipari) as the only programs to accomplish that feat. This also means that head coach Ben Howland is just one of three coaches in college basketball history to win at least 30 games in three consecutive seasons (joining Rupp and Calipari). UCLA became the Pacific-10 Conference s 7th No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and became the first one seed from the Pac-10 to reach the Final Four. In 2008, UCLA became the first school to make three consecutive trips to the Final Four since Michigan State accomplished the feat from UCLA is 14-4 (.778) all-time in games in Honda Center. The annual preseason poll was released in conjunction with Pac-12 men s basketball media day, hosted in downtown Los Angeles at L.A. Live. Our team always has high expectations, said Howland, who enters his ninth season as the Bruins head coach. The expectations that we put on ourselves matter the most. It s always nice to be picked high, but that doesn t guarantee anything. It s all about where you finish. We ve got to go out and prove it, and part of it is being healthy. Hopefully, if we stay healthy and focused on what we are trying to do, it will take care of itself. In the preseason poll, UCLA tallied 14 first-place votes and narrowly edged out California and Arizona. In addition to Jones, the Bruins return junior forward Reeves Nelson, who led last season s team with 13.9 ppg and 9.1 rpg. California, paced by senior guard Jorge Gutierrez (14.6 ppg, 4.5 apg) and senior forward Harper Kamp (14.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg) picked up 13 firstplace votes and is tabbed for second. Arizona, the reigning regular-season conference champion, pulled in the remaining 11 first-place votes and are picked to finish third. Washington, the defending Pac-12 Tournament champion, is slotted fourth, followed by Oregon (fifth) and Stanford (sixth). USC, Oregon State, Arizona State, Colorado and Washington State (tied) and Utah round out the conference s remaining 12 teams, respectively. Media have correctly picked the conference s regular-season champion 12 times in 19 tries. WOODEN AWARD PRESEASON LIST Sophomore Joshua Smith of the UCLA men s basketball team has been named to the John R. Wooden Award men s preseason top 50 list, as announced Monday by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Smith secured Pac-10 All- Freshman Team acclaim last season, averaging 10.9 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game. Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball media members, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year s individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball s most prestigious honor. Two UCLA men s basketball players have won the John R. Wooden Award in the past. Marques Johnson earned college basketball s first-ever Wooden Award as a senior during the season. Ed O Bannon became UCLA s second Wooden Award winner as a senior in Transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are not eligible for the preseason list. The players on the preseason list are considered strong candidates for the midseason list and the official voting ballot, both of which are open to freshmen and transfer students. 5 BRUINS ON THE RADIO The season is UCLA s 15th with Clear Channel and the games will again air on AM 570 KLAC in Southern California. The games will be produced by IMG College, UCLA s corporate and media rights holder. Chris Roberts (talk@chrisrobertsonline. net) is in his 20th year as the Voice of the Bruins and his 31st season broadcasting NCAA Division I sports in Los Angeles. Since 1982, Roberts has broadcast more NCAA Division One games in Los Angeles radio than anyone. Prior to joining the Bruins in the Fall of 1992, he served as the voice of the Long Beach State 49ers for 10 years and one with Cal State Fullerton. During that time, he was the sports director at KFI/KOST 103FM. A fourtime Golden Mike winner, he also handles the play-by-play duties for UCLA football. He has also authored two books, Stadium Stories: UCLA Bruins and UCLA Football Vault, which he co-authored with Bill Bennett. A five-time nominee for the Southern California Broadcasters Association Play-by- Play Broadcaster of the Year award, Roberts is a voter for both the Heisman Trophy and the Wooden Award. Don MacLean, the all-time leading scorer in UCLA and Pac-10 history (2,608 points, ) and a nine-year NBA standout, will be in his 10th year as the color analyst. Tracy Murray, another former Bruin standout (averaged 18.3 ppg at UCLA) and a 12-year NBA veteran, will be in his fourth year serving as analyst when MacLean is fulfilling television obligations. NATIONAL TITLES FINAL FOURS CONFERENCE TITLES 20-WIN SEASONS SMITH NAMED TO NAISMITH PRESEASON WATCH LIST UCLA s Joshua Smith has been named to the Naismith Trophy preseason watch list, as announced Monday (Nov. 7) by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Smith represented one of the Pac-12 Conference s two selections to this season s preseason watch list. Washington s Terrence Ross was the only other player from a Pac-12 program selected to the preseason list. Smith secured Pac-10 All-Freshman Team acclaim in after averaging 10.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while shooting 55.5 percent from the field (132-for-238). The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012 college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy will be awarded at the 2012 NCAA Men s Final Four in New Orleans. The Board of Selectors will compile a midseason team of the top 30 players in the nation in late February. 10 Ben Howland knows how to rebuild a collegiate basketball program. He did it at Northern Arizona and again at Pittsburgh. And Howland s done it at UCLA. In his ninth year as the Bruins head coach in , Howland led UCLA to back-to-back-to-back Pacific-10 titles ( ) and back-to-back-to-back Final Four appearances ( ). He also guided the Bruins to a school-record 35 victories in Additionally, he won more games in a three-year span (97 from ) than any other coach in UCLA history. Sports Arena was UCLA s home court from (6 years), as the Bruins amassed a record of (.859) and ended their run in the Sports Arena on a 36-game winning streak.
