"Kiera has shown that she is a great scorer. She is great in transition and she is creative off the dribble," Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. "I think if she can make herself more difficult to guard when she doesn't have the basketball and if she really commits herself to becoming a great defender then she is going to make us a better basketball team." Sophomore ( ) Hardy thrived during a breakout sophomore campaign, leading the Big 12 in conference play with 20.9 points per game on her way to fi rst-team All-Big 12 honors. 8 33 Honors Jessica Gerhart (pronounced GAIR-hart) heads into her junior campaign battling to earn a spot in Nebraska's starting lineup. The 6-2 forward from Fenton, Iowa, used her strong offensive game to secure a starting role in the Huskers' lineup through the fi rst 18 games as a sophomore in JESSICA GERHART 6-2, Junior, Forward, Fenton, Iowa (Sentral) 4First-Team Academic All-Big 12 (2005) 4Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll (Fall, 2003, 2004; Sprint 2005) 4Street & Smith's Midwest Honorable-Mention All-American Gerhart was NU's primary weapon through the first fi ve games, averaging 15.8 points per game. Her production remained strong for the Huskers throughout non-conference play and into the fi rst two games of the Big 12 season. After producing her fi rst career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds at Missouri on Jan. 8, Gerhart was averaging 13.2 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per game. However, Gerhart battled illness the rest of the season, which cut her scoring and rebounding averages nearly in half by the end of the season. In Gerhart's absence, Elena Diaz stepped into the starting lineup and Danielle Page became a major contributor as NU's top inside player off the bench. This season, Gerhart will try to re-establish her offensive presence for the Huskers while also continuing to improve defensively. If she is successful, Gerhart could become a major weapon for the Huskers and take a good portion of the scoring load off returning fi rst-team All-Big 12 guard Kiera Hardy. "She proved early in the season that she can put the ball in the hole," Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. "We know Jess can score against some pretty good competition and she was also a pretty good rebounder for us. We would love to see her help us in those areas again this year, while really dedicating herself to improve as a defender." Sophomore ( ) Gerhart provided a potent offensive option inside for the Huskers through her fi rst 18 games as a sophomore, before being sidelined with an appendectomy on Feb. 1. The sophomore from Fenton, Iowa, started each of NU s fi rst 18 contests 4adidas Top 10 All-American Camp 4Three-Time All-State Selection (Iowa Girls Coaches Association and Des Moines Register) and was averaging 11.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, before missing games against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. She returned to the court in a limited role over Nebraska s fi nal 11 contests. Her best late-season performance came with 10 points off the bench against Missouri on Feb. 26. Gerhart s averages dipped down the stretch and she fi nished the season averaging 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game on the year. Although she struggled through an up-and-down season, Gerhart remained strong in the classroom, capturing fi rst-team academic All-Big 12 honors for the fi rst time in her career. After posting her fi rst career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Huskers win at Missouri on Jan. 8, Gerhart was averaging 13.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. However, following the Huskers win at Mizzou, Gerhart slipped into a shooting slump and hit just 6- of-34 fi eld goal attempts (17.6 percent) over her next fi ve games before having her appendix removed. Before the slump, Gerhart was one of NU s top shooters, hitting 49.4 percent of her shots from the fi eld. She fi nished the season at 41.4 percent. In Big 12 Conference action, she averaged just 4.9 points and 2.7 rebounds in just 14.5 minutes per game. Despite her late-season setbacks, Gerhart s 128 total rebounds more than doubled the 52 boards she grabbed as a freshman when she appeared in all 30 games for the Huskers. Her 235 points also more than doubled the 91 points she produced as a freshman. She produced 11 double-fi gure scoring efforts as a sophomore, including a career-high 20 points in Nebraska s win over Northern Colorado on Nov. 19. Gerhart followed that performance by scoring 19 points in a win over Washington State on Nov. 22. She scored 16 points in the Huskers Big 12- opening victory over Colorado on Jan. 5. Gerhart opened the season with a then-career high 17 points to go along with nine rebounds in NU s fi rst-round Preseason WNIT victory over Western Illinois on Nov. 12. 12 JELENA SPIRIC 6-0, Senior, Forward, Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro (The Belgrade V/Colby CC) 4 Jelena Spiric (pronounced YELL-uh-nuh SPEERitch) made a strong impression in her first season with the Huskers by earning Big 12 Conference Newcomerof-the-Year honors as a junior in Despite a solid first impression, the former fi rstteam NJCAA All-American wants to make an even stronger statement as a senior. Spiric played most of her junior season at less than 100 percent after undergoing major knee surgery in March of At the start of her fi rst season at Nebraska, Spiric's quickness and shooting touch suffered but continued to improve throughout the season. The 6-0 forward from Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro, improved week-by-week and by the end of the season, Spiric was perhaps Nebraska's most complete all-around player. In Nebraska's final nine games of the season, Spiric averaged 10.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game, while shooting 57.6 percent (34-59) from the field and 42.8 percent (6-14) from three-point range. In her fi rst nine games of the year, Spiric managed just 4.4 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game, while hitting just 35.3 percent (12-34) from the field and 21.1 percent (4-19) from beyond the threepoint arc. Those dramatic statistics and Spiric's intangible basketball knowledge give Nebraska Coach Connie Yori high expectations for Spiric's senior season. She wasted little time in making a name for herself during the conference season. Spiric earned a pair of Big 12 Rookie-of-the-Week awards (Jan. 10 and Jan. 17). 15 NEBRASKA RETURNING PLAYERS 22 Honors Heather Kephart has worked through injuries in her first two seasons at Nebraska and was granted a medical hardship last season to give her three more seasons of eligibility for the Huskers. Now entering her third season in the Nebraska program, Kephart is healthy and ready to show the shooting and scoring ability that made her the most prolific scorer in Oklahoma high school history during her prep career. Kephart enters her sophomore season as one of Nebraska's most dangerous three-point shooters and most knowledgeable offensive players. As a true freshman, Kephart knocked down 17 three-pointers in the fi rst 11 games of her career, despite recovering from shoulder surgery after her senior season of high school. Last season she played in just one game while battling foot and hip injuries. Nebraska Coach Connie Yori is hoping that those health problems are fi nally behind Kephart. "I think the thing Heather has gained over the past two years is a level of maturity and an even greater hunger for the game. She still has three years left and I think she is going to be able to contribute for us. "She feels good and I think she is finally beginning to trust her body to hold up for her. She is in the best shape of her Husker career right now from an injury, fi tness and athletic standpoint."
