8 Pacific-10 Conference Statistics & Honors The Pac-10 Review UCLA captured both the Pac-10 regular season title and the Pac-10 Tournament crown en route to a school record-typing 32 victories. The Bruins excelled in the postseason, reaching the NCAA Championship game before falling to Florida. UCLA was the first Pac-10 team to reach the NCAA Final Four since Arizona did so in 2001 In all, the Pac-10 had four teams participate in the NCAA Tournament ARIZONA, CALIFORNA, UCLA AND WASHINGTON. In addition to UCLA s climb to the Final Four, Washington reached the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season Defenses dominated the Pac-10 this season. For the third year in a row, WASHINGTON STATE led the Pac-10 in scoring defense, allowing a league-low 57.7 points per game. UCLA allowed just 58.7 points per game during its 12-game winning steak on the way to the NCAA Championship game. In all, each Pac-10 team held the opposition to an average of 70.0 points per game or less. It was the first time all 10 Conference teams accomplished the feat in the same season. The previous best was five teams allowing an average of 70 or fewer points per game in 1986 and 1987 WASHINGTON s Brandon Roy, the Pac-10 Player of the Year, was a consensus First Team All-American, while CALIFORNIA s Leon Powe was a consensus Second Team All-American. 9 Boxscores Game One UC Irvine 79, Stanford 63 November 19, 2005 Maples Pavillion STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Ross Schraeder scored 19 points and UC Irvine used an impressive shooting performance and hustle to shock No. 13 Stanford in the Cardinal s season-opener Saturday. Shamar Armstrong scored six straight points in the final 3:19, and the Anteaters took advantage of a significant height advantage to pound the ball inside at every opportunity against a Stanford squad missing starting forward Matt Haryasz after he sprained his ankle in practice Friday. Darren Fells added 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks for UC Irvine (2-1), which beat Stanford for the first time in six meetings between the schools. Stanford, picked to finish second in the Pac-10 behind Arizona, beat the Anteaters in in December 2002 and again the following season on the road. Stanford cut the lead to on Grunfeld s basket with 3:55 left, then Armstrong hit a tough 3-pointer on the other end. On the next trip down, Armstrong converted a three-point play. Dan Grunfeld scored 18 of his 29 points in the first half, making an impressive season debut after his breakout junior season a year was shortened because of a knee injury. But he looked tired at times in the second half trying to carry the majority of the load on offense while also grabbing nine rebounds. (AP) Matt Haryasz had 16 points and 12 rebounds to help Stanford win its second straight game after a disappointing season-opening loss, over Cal Poly on Monday night. Chris Hernandez added a season-high 22 points for the Cardinal (2-1), who improved to 5-1 against the Mustangs. Cal Poly s only win over the Cardinal occurred in Taj Finger had 13 points and Dan Grunfeld added 11 for Stanford. Haryasz recorded his second straight doubledouble and the 13th of his career. Dawin Whiten scored 22 points to lead the Mustangs (1-3), who lost their third straight. Whiten left the game after sustaining a left leg injury with 6:14 remaining. Cal Poly, picked to finish eighth in the Big West, began a stretch in which it plays seven of nine games on the road through Jan. 7, while Stanford goes on the road for six of its next seven games. The Cardinal were knocked out of the national poll after losing to Big West member UC Irvine 12 days ago. The Anteaters were chosen to finish sixth. Stanford began to make amends against the Mustangs, though it took a 15-6 run to open the second half to give the Cardinal some breathing room. With Finger and Haryasz maintaining control of the post, Stanford was able to cool down the Mustangs and take advantage of Cal Poly s foul situation to slowly build its lead. Montana (4-1) jumped out to a 13-0 lead and all five of its starters scored in double figures in the convincing win over the Cardinal (2-2). Jordan Hasquet added 20 points, including all four of his 3-pointers from the top of the key, and dished out four assists. Montana led at halftime before Dan Grunfeld and Matt Haryasz combined for Stanford s first 20 points of the second half. The Cardinal rallied within on two free throws by Haryasz with 11:42 remaining. Stanford got within on two more free throws by Haryasz with 7:11 left, but Hasquet quieted the rally with a 3-pointer. Montana took a lead after Kevin Criswell came out of a scramble for a loose ball with a fullcourt layup attempt. Matthews tipped in the miss with 3:44 remaining. A steal by Matthews led to a layup by Matt Martin and gave Montana a lead with 2:38 left. Montana made 13-of-14 free throws in the final 2:29. Criswell added 14 points for Montana, followed by Martin with 12 and Andrew Strait with 11. But the Aggies, who are in the third year of a four-year transition from Division II to Division I, outhustled the Cardinal down the stretch. Stanford (2-3), picked second in the Pac-10, had a tough weekend, also losing at Montana on Friday. After Tim Morris tied the game at 48 for Stanford with a free throw with about 5 minutes left, the Aggies went on their run. Phil Rasmussen s basket gave the Aggies the lead for good and after Taj Finger missed the front end of a one-on-one, Vince Oliver scored on a pretty drive to make it a four-point game. After a basket by Morris, Rommel Marentez scored on a floater in the lane and Brucculeri hit the 3 that send the crowd of 5,386 into a frenzy. Rasmussen scored 18 points, Thomas Juillerat added 15 and Oliver had 12 for the Aggies, who had lost all 12 previous meetings against the Cardinal. Sailes added 10 and Dowdell had nine for the Hokies, who turned the ball over only seven times. Chris Hernandez had a gamehigh 17 points for Stanford (2-4), but could not convert the front end of two separate one-and-one free throw opportunities down the stretch. (AP) Matt Haryasz had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Stanford ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over Denver on Monday night. Dan Grunfeld added 19 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Cardinal (3-4) avoided their worst start since beginning 2-5 in and worst skid since dropping six in a row to end the season the last time Stanford lost more than three straight. Grunfeld, Stanford s leading scorer last season in his injury-shortened junior year, scored the Cardinal s first eight points after halftime and converted consecutive three-point plays. He is still wearing a bulky brace on his surgically repaired right knee. Haryasz scored six points during a 13-1 run that gave the Cardinal a lead with 6 minutes left in the first half. After the Pioneers cut it to 10, Stanford ended the first half on an 8-0 spurt for a lead at the break. Haryasz, who made 10 of 12 free throws, dunked in the closing moments on a pretty pass from freshman Mitch Johnson. Stanford played without forward Fred Washington, who has left knee tendonitis that likely will keep him out of Wednesday night s game against Princeton in the Pete Newell Challenge. (AP) Chris Hernandez and Dan Grunfeld scored 11 points each and Matt Haryasz added 10 in Stanford s victory over Princeton on Wednesday night in the Pete Newell Challenge. Freshman Mitch Johnson had five points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals in another impressive performance off the bench. Ten players got at least 10 minutes of time for the Cardinal (4-4), who won their second straight game following a three-game losing streak to move back to.500. Kyle Koncz scored nine points to lead the Tigers (2-7), who fell behind early and never recovered on their way to their third straight loss. Princeton has played worse: The Tigers lost to Monmouth on Dec. 14 before a defeat at Wake Forest last Saturday. In its final tuneup before the start of the Pac-10 season next week, Stanford improved to 8-0 all-time in this event after beating San Francisco in overtime last year. Noah Savage and Kevin Steuerer had eight points each for Princeton, which played without starting point guard Scott Greenman because of a back injury. The Tigers shot 32.5 percent, going 7-for-21 from 3-point range against Stanford s strong zone defense. The Bruins had lost eight straight at home to Stanford and six in a row overall. The win was the eighth straight for UCLA, which is off to its best start since the national championship season of UCLA (11-1) opened the game with an 18-1 run, capped by a jumper from Ryan Wright with 14:23 to play. Hairston finished with 21 points 15 in the second half and seven rebounds and Ray Schafer 10 points and six boards for Oregon, which lost at California on Thursday night and has dropped four of its last five. (AP) Hassan Adams broke out of a scoring slump with 23 points and Ivan Radenovic also scored 23 to help Arizona snap a four-game road losing streak with a victory over Stanford on Sunday. Marcus Williams keyed a 16-3 run to start the second half as the Wildcats (16-10, 9-6 Pac-10) bounced back after a loss at California on Thursday to complete a season sweep against the Cardinal (13-10, 9-5) and earn a much-needed win. Arizona and Stanford have dominated the Pac-10 the past decade, but this matchup was less about conference superiority and more about boosting both teams chances of making the NCAA tournament. Both teams have won three outright Pac-10 regular season titles and shared another with each other the past eight seasons. The only year since that neither the Cardinal nor the Wildcats finished atop the Pac-10 standings was in , when they finished in a four-way tie for second, two games behind Oregon. Arizona ended up winning the conference tournament that season. Hernandez let Stanford with 28 points Haryasz added 15 and Taj Finger had 11. The Cardinal had won nine straight at. Arizona used an aggressive full-court press for much of the game, using its athleticism to cause turnovers and disrupting the Cardinal s offense. After shooting 57 percent in the first half, Stanford shot just 36 percent after the break and finished with 15 turnovers. Hernandez hit three 3-pointers in the first 2:32 of the game, forcing Arizona to come out of its zone defense. The long-range shooting Stanford hit four 3s in the first four minutes helped the Cardinal take an early 14-6 lead. The Huskies (21-5, 10-5) remained one game back of California and UCLA in the Pac-10 and host the Golden Bears in their final home game on Sunday night. Brandon Roy continued his outstanding play of late with 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists. The back-to-back conference player of the week scored at least 20 points for the eighth straight game. Roy was efficient, making 7-of-13 shots and was 8-for-8 on free throws. Jamaal Williams added 10 points off the bench for Washington, which won its fifth straight. The loss dealt a serious blow to Stanford s hopes of making a 12th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Cardinal (13-11, 9-6) lost for the fourth time in their last five games and have beat just one ranked opponent this season Washington on Jan. 29. This night hardly resembled the first matchup. In that meeting, Washington led when Huskies freshman Justin Dentmon fouled Stanford s Chris Hernandez on a 3-pointer with.2 seconds left. Hernandez made all three free throws to force overtime and the Cardinal pulled away for a win. Harassed all night by Washington s vocal student section, Hernandez was miserable on Thursday night. He missed his first six shots and finished with nine points on 2-for-13 shooting. Matt Haryasz and Peter Prowitt led the Cardinal with 10 points each. Stanford shot just 37 percent. Chris Hernandez, who led Stanford (14-11, 10-6 Pac- 10) with 10 points, missed a 15-foot jump shot that Goods converted when no defenders blocked him out. Josh Akognon led Washington State (11-14, 4-12) with 11 points. Robbie Cowgill added 10. The total of 76 points was the lowest in a Pac-10 game since Oregon State defeated Oregon on March 23, 1984 (prior to the shot clock). Stanford s 39 points was the team s lowest score in a victory since a win over UCLA in Stanford had not scored fewer points in any game since a loss to UCLA in Washington State had not lost a game with so few points allowed since losing at Washington in Stanford shot 32.6 percent from the floor, including 30 percent on 3-pointers (3 for 10). Lodrick Stewart scored 17 points to lead the Trojans (17-11, 8-9), who lost their fifth in seven games. Gabe Pruitt, who scored 13 points, returned to the Trojans lineup after missing five games with a left knee injury and made an immediate impact, helping to generate some early offense. Pruitt has reached double figures in 21 of the 23 games he s played. Nick Young had 10 points. Haryasz blocked three shots to move into sole possession of third place on Stanford s all-time list with 123. Hernandez hit a short jumper with a minute to play to tie the game at 54 and Haryasz made both of his free throws with 35 seconds left to give Stanford a edge. Abdoulaye Ndiaye made a 2-foot jumper with 12.2 seconds left to tie the game. The Cardinal scored the first seven points of the second half to stake itself to a advantage but the Trojans roared back. Pruitt hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 43 with 9:57 left to play and Nick Young hit a short jumper 30 seconds later to put USC ahead. 14 Boxscores Game Twenty-Seven UCLA 75, Stanford 54 March 4, 2006 STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Arron Afflalo led four players in double figures with 16 points and the 15th-ranked Bruins captured their first conference title in nine years Saturday with a victory against Stanford, securing the top seed in next week s Pac-10 tournament. Jordan Farmar added 13 points and seven assists, Ryan Hollins had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Luc Richard Mbah a Moute contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. Michael Roll hit three 3-pointers for nine points, and UCLA rode its stingy defense to an emotional win that disappointed the raucous, sold-out crowd of 7,334 in Maples Pavilion. UCLA (24-6, 14-4 Pac-10) had already clinched a share of its first conference regular-season title since 1997 with Thursday night s overtime win at California. This is the Bruins eighth league crown overall and they won it outright by sweeping the season series from Stanford for the first time since 1995 the year of UCLA s last NCAA title in coach Jim Harrick s secondto-last season at the school. The team s lone loss that year came at Oregon. Dan Grunfeld scored 14 points and Anthony Goods 12 for Stanford (15-12, 11-7), which now probably must win next week s conference tournament to earn an NCAA bid and avoid ending a streak of 11 straight trips to the tournament. The Cardinal received an at-large berth with 18 wins last season though they played a more difficult schedule and some of their losses came to prestigious teams such as Michigan State, Louisville and Tennessee. Stanford pulled within nine points on a 3-pointer by Lawrence Hill with 12:25 left, but couldn t get closer. UCLA coach Ben Howland emptied his bench with 1:12 to play and the Bruins celebrated mildly when the final buzzer sounded before heading to the locker room. The game marked the last home contest for Chris Hernandez, Grunfeld, Jason Haas and Matt Haryasz though the Cardinal still could host an NIT game. The seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony that featured video highlights of their careers. Hernandez didn t score his first basket until Stanford s first possession of the second half after taking just one shot and committing four turnovers to one assist in 11 minutes of action in the first half. But he picked up his third foul at the 17:44 mark of the second half. Haryasz, 0-for-5 in the first half, made his first field goal moments after Hernandez s made basket. He finished with eight points and Hernandez had nine. Stanford took a 5-0 lead and UCLA started the game 0-for-3, but the Cardinal committed eight turnovers in the opening six minutes and the Bruins took advantage with a 19-4 spurt. Stanford struggled to take shots against the Bruins pressure man defense managing only eight shots in the first 10 1/2 minutes. Arizona, shooting for its 22nd straight NCAA tournament appearance, meets No. 13 UCLA or Oregon State in the semifinals Friday night. The fourth-seeded Wildcats (19-11) moved within one victory of their 19th consecutive 20-win season. Chris Rodgers added 12 points and five steals and Marcus Williams had 11 points despite a 3-for-16 shooting performance for the Wildcats, who forced 23 turnovers in beating Stanford for the third time this season. Arizona won without leading-scorer Hassan Adams, suspended for the Pac-10 tournament by coach Lute Olson after being arrested on suspicion of drunken driving last weekend. Chris Hernandez scored all but five of his 20 points in the second half for Stanford (15-13). Matt Haryasz added 14 points and Peter Prowitt had 10 before fouling out with 3:26 remaining. The Cardinal s school-record 11-year streak of NCAA tournament appearances almost surely will end. Arizona committed only seven turnovers, and made 24-of-30 free throws to 10-of-11 for Stanford. The Cardinal shot 50 percent to the Wildcats 39 percent, and won the rebounding battle But the turnovers did them in. Dan Grunfeld s basket midway through the first half ended a 7 1/2-minute scoring drought, and triggered a 7-0 spurt that tied the game. Dan Grunfeld added 12 points and Matt Haryasz had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinal. The win advanced Stanford (16-13) to Friday s first-round game at Missouri State (20-8). The Cardinal dominated Virginia (15-15) throughout, leading by as much as 19 en route to their most lopsided win since a victory over Princeton on Dec. 21. Stanford forced Virginia into 15 turnovers while holding the Cavaliers to a season-low in points. Hernandez, playing in what was likely his final home game, didn t score much, but his points and assists were timely for Stanford. The senior guard had eight points in the first half, including a pair of 3- pointers when the Cardinal took control. Then after Virginia made its best push of the night to close to in the second half, Hernandez made another 3-pointer and dished out two assists to spark a 9-0 run that put away the Cavaliers. The win snapped a late-season drought by Stanford, which lost six of nine before beating Virginia, and extended the Cardinal s first appearance in the NIT since That was also the last time Stanford played Virginia prior to Tuesday. Stanford s offense, which struggled against pressuring defenses in late-season losses to UCLA and Arizona, had no problems against Virginia s soft zone. The Cardinal shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the first half and 49 percent for the game. Nine different players scored for Stanford, eight in the first half when the Cardinal jumped to a lead. Conversely, Virginia shot just 32.3 percent from the floor in the first half and went through two long scoring droughts. Stanford took advantage and went on runs of 17-3 and 13-4 to take control.
