The Phoenix has played in seven games in a row decided by single digits. In its most recent game down to the wire, Green Bay pulled out a win over Wright State when freshman Keifer Sykes drained a pair of free throws with three seconds to play. The free throws finished off an improbable 17-point comeback for the Phoenix and ended the team s four-game slide. Sykes scored a game-high 16 points against the Raiders and is averaging 15.8 points per game since turning 18, but sophomore Alec Brown tried to steal the spotlight with a near triple-double. Brown had nine points, eight rebounds and a Horizon League record 11 blocked shots, the most by any player in the country this season. Green Bay will look to carry its momentum to the road when it plays the Vikings, one of the league s top teams. Cleveland State is ranked No. 10 in the mid-major top-25 poll due in large part to its success in close games. The Vikings are 9-2 in games decided by 10 points or less. The Vikings are coming off a loss, however, after falling at Valparaiso last Sunday afternoon. The senior-dominated team was led by a junior against the Crusaders, with Tim Kamczyc scoring 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. GREEN BAY PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Ht. Yr. The Phoenix holds a 21-9 edge at home but the Vikings have won 16-of 29 games in Cleveland. CSU swept the two games in the series a season ago, including a Viking win in Cleveland the last time the two teams met (2/26/11). MATCHUP TO WATCH: The contest features two players that have been red hot from beyond the three-point line in Horizon League play. Cleveland State s Jeremy Montgomery is shooting 51.3 percent (20-39) from long range in conference action while Green Bay s Kam Cerroni has knocked down 48.4 percent (15-31) of his threes. VIKINGS PLAYER TO WATCH: Cleveland State is a senior-laden team, but junior Tim Kamczyc has come on strong in recent weeks for the Vikings. In Horizon League play, 6-foot-7 forward is second on the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game and is shooting 64.2 percent from the field. CAN I SEE SOME ID: Freshman Keifer Sykes, who turned 18 on Dec. 30, has been on a tear since becoming able to legally vote. One of the youngest players in the country, Sykes has scored in double figures in four-straight games as an 18-year old. In league play, Sykes is tenth in the conference in field goal percentage (54.0) and is tied for 17th in scoring (11.6 ppg). The Chicago native has scored 16 or points in three of the past four games. BLOCK PARTY: Sophomore Alec Brown s 11 blocks against Wright State set a number of records and were also a first for any player in Division I this season. The 11 swats, including seven after halftime, broke his own school record as well as the Resch Center and Horizon League records for blocks in a game. Brown s total also raised his blocks per game average to 3.2, a number which ranks second in the Horizon League and ninth in the country. CRASH THE GLASS: The area that Brown may have improved the most from his freshman campaign is rebounding. Brown is second in the Horizon League in rebounding (7.9 per game) and is averaging nine boards per game in league play. He has tallied eight or more rebounds in 11 of 17 games after doing so just eight times as a freshman. CLOSE CALLS: Green Bay has played seven games in a row decided by less than 10 points. In the past two seasons, Green Bay has lost just three Horizon League games by 10 or more points. Only Cleveland State and Butler have fewer double-digit losses in that span. TRIPLE THREATS Green Bay has struggled at times as a team from long range this season (32.0%) but sports two of the top-three three-point shooters in the league. Senior Steve Baker has been consistent all season and is second in the league in threepoint percentage (44.9%, 22-49). Sophomore Kam Cerroni ranks third in the conference (43.9%, 25-57). KAM CAN Cerroni got off to a slow start from long range this season, making just three of his first 12 threes. FRESHMAN DUO Armstead (19 points) and Sykes (17 points) combined for 36 points at Valparaiso on Dec. 31. Green Bay also set season highs in field goal percentage (59.4) and assists (20). BALANCED ATTACK Five players scored in double figures in the offensive outburst at Valparaiso. 4 WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? 7-foot-1 sophomore Alec Brown was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League squad before the season and is making a strong case for postseason honors. Brown ranks in the top-10 in the league in points (13.6, 8th), rebounds (7.9, 2nd), freethrow percentage (78.7, 6th), blocked shots (3.2, 2nd), offensive rebounds (3.1, t1st) and defensive rebounds (4.8, t3rd). In six Horizon League games this season, Brown is averaging 15 points (4th), nine rebounds (2nd), 2.7 blocks (2nd) and 34.3 minutes (7th) per contest. Brown has started each of the 49 games in his two-year Phoenix career. In his 45th career game, Brown scored 13 points at Butler to reach 500 points for his career. The center has 122 blocks and is just 13 blocks shy of breaking the school s all-time blocks record. He moved into second place against Wright State. With 13 more blocks, Brown will break his own single-season school record of 67, established during his freshman campaign. He has recorded a block in 16 of 17 games in and 43 of his 49 career games. On Dec. 31, Brown had 21 points and 11 rebounds at Valpo last Saturday, the third time he has had a 20-point, 10-rebound game and the seventh double-double of his career. PHOENIX NOTES LEAGUE STAT LEADERS SPECIALTY STATS NEWEST BIG MAN Junior transfer Brennan Cougill has made a major impact on the Phoenix this season. His season is highlighted by a 19-point, 19-rebound effort in a win over Idaho on Dec. 22 when Brown was stuck in foul trouble. Cougill s effort earned him co-horizon League Player of the Week on Dec. 27. The junior had 12 points, five rebounds and a career-best five assists against Detroit. BIG BOARDS Cougill s 19 rebound effort against Idaho was one of the best in program history. The total tied for the third-most alltime, just two behind the program record He also tied the Resch Center record for rebounds in a game, matching Greg Babcok s effort against Milwaukee in LOST CAPTAIN Brian Wardle recently announced that sophomore Daniel Turner is out for the season with a torn ACL injury. Turner suffered the injury at Valparaiso on Dec. 31, when he was in the midst of his best game of the season with 11 points. The sophomore was averaging 4.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Turner has started 35 games in his two-year Phoenix career.
