Overall, the Red Devils lead the series 9-7-1, however the Statesmen have won three of the past four meetings. WHEN LAST WE MET In Carlisle, Pa., Hobart suffered its first ever overtime loss, falling to Dickinson The Statesmen were 4-0 in overtime games prior to last season s Devilish decision. Hobart dominated the game statistics, outgaining its host , recording 26 first downs to 13, and controlling the clock 37:57-22:03. The one statistic that came back to haunt the Statesmen was turnovers. Hobart was minus two, losing a pair of crucial fumbles that led to Red Devil touchdowns. An 86-yard fumble return by Will Scott put Dickinson on top with 47 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Statesmen got complete passes of 20 and 26 yards from Rich Doyle to set up a game-tying field goal as regulation expired. Hobart missed a 42-yard field goal attempt in the first overtime, making Matt Stark s 37-yard three-pointer the game-winner. For Starters Hobart has opened 16 consecutive seasons against Dickinson. The Red Devils lead the overall series, but the Statesmen have won six of the past eight showdowns. Overall, Hobart is on opening day. Liberty League s Best The 2007 Liberty League Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Player of the Year were all Statesmen. It s the first time all three awards have been sent to the same campus. Quarterback Andrew Strom 07 threw for 2,742 yards and 27 touchdowns on his way to the offensive award (as well as the ECAC Northwest Player of the Year award), while cornerback James Alexander 07 led the team with eight interceptions, grabbing the defensive award and D3football.com All-America honors. Kicker/punter Dominick Ancona 07 scored 78 points, including 10 field goals, and averaged 39 yards per punt to capture the special teams award. ENCORES REQUESTED The Statesmen welcome back All-Liberty League selections, five on offense (OL Mike Condon, TE Matt Duliba, RB Anthony Hobaica, OL Andrew Miller, OL Brian Monaco) and five on defense (DT Ryan Aruck, LB Justin Hager, DE Kwame Lovell, LB Kyle O Laughlin, LB Ryan Robinson). he s baaack Inside linebacker Jeff Sanders is preparing for his fifth season in a Hobart uniform. He was granted a medical red shirt by the NCAA after suffering a season-ending injury at Dickinson last season. The two-time All-Liberty League selection begins his final season with 180 career tackles, 3.5 sacks, and three interceptions. Preseason Hype Speaking of Justin Hager, the senior was named a preseason second-team All-American by Lindy s 2008 College Football Preview. In his first season as a starter, Hager turned in a record-setting 2007 campaign. The first team All-Liberty League, ECAC All-Star, and second team D3football.com All-East selection tied the Hobart single game record for tackles with 19 at home against Carnegie Mellon. He matched the mark again in the regular season finale at Rochester. Posting 11 tackles or more in six of the Statesmen s 11 games, Hager finished the year with 114 stops, the third highest single season total in Hobart history.

A starter at inside linebacker in 2007 (32 tkls, 2 PBU, FR), he ll take his talents to the other side of the ball in 2008, starting at fullback. STATESMEN SUSTAIN SUCCESS Including last year s 8-3 mark, the Hobart football team has posted 11 consecutive winning seasons, a program record. Prior to the current streak of sustained success, the benchmark for winning campaigns was eight, established by the Hobart teams of 1921 through Conference Crowns Hobart earned a share of the 2007 Liberty League Championship thanks to the Statesmen s win over Rochester, coupled with Rensselaer s win over Union. Both teams finished with a 6-1 conference record. It s the seventh time since 1998 that Hobart has captured at least a share of the league title. SECOND CENTURY Now preparing for their 115th varsity season, the Statesmen have made seven postseason appearances over the past eight seasons (7 NCAA bids, 1 ECAC Bowl). That s an impressive turnaround after earning just a single postseason invitation an ECAC bowl bid that was turned down in the program s first 100 seasons. He s The Boss Now in his 14th season, Head Coach MIKE CRAGG boasts a career record of He has been named the Liberty League Coach of the Year four times and was the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year in Cragg is Hobart s all-time leader in wins and games coached (131) and is second in winning percentage (.679). Lending A Hand Head Coach Mike Cragg is assisted by Offensive Coordinator Kevin DeWall 00, Defensive Coordinator Scott Yoder 01, linebackers coach Aaron Backhaus 00, receivers coach Jim Ryan (St. John Fisher 00), quarterbacks coach Jon Drach (Western Michigan 04), running backs coach John Manley (Brockport 72), and Terry Muffley (East Stroudsburg 74) CAPTAINS Hobart seniors Rich Doyle, Matt Duliba, and Jeff Sanders were voted by their peers to serve as team captains this season. Scouting the Red Devils Dickinson (1-0) kicked off the 2008 season last Saturday with a 34-7 win over Grove City. The Red Devils scored 34 unanswered points, including scores on four consecutive possessions spanning the second and third quarters, to run away with the contest. Sophomore running back Greg Lord led the way with a career-high 119 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Junior quarterback Ian Mitchell completed 6 of 10 passes for 110 yards. He was intercepted once. Defensively, Dickinson got nine tackles from senior defensive back Michael Dalton, while senior defensive lineman Steve Bokron chipped in six tackles, including 1.5 sacks. On the air Every Hobart football game will be carried live by WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva, 88.1 in Ithaca). Veteran play-by-play man Ted Baker will describe all of the action.
