OU, which is 17-2 overall and tied atop the Big 12 standings at 6-2, is in its fifth season under head coach Lon Kruger. The Tigers are 13-7 this season (6-2 SEC) and are under the direction of Johnny Jones, who is in his fourth campaign at LSU. A win Saturday would give Kruger his 100th career victory at Oklahoma. 3 OU HEAD COACH LON KRUGER Lon Kruger was named Oklahoma s 14th head men s basketball coach on April 1, Owns a (.620) collegiate record in 30 years and is at Oklahoma (.660), now in his fifth season. The only Division I head coach to ever take five programs to the NCAA Tournament (Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV and OU) and has taken each at least twice. Named AP Big 12 Coach of the Year. Has also coached at Texas-Pan American (52-59 record from ), Kansas State (81-46 from ), Florida ( from ), Illinois (81-48 from ) and UNLV ( from ). Served as head coach of NBA s Atlanta Hawks from ( record) and was an assistant for New York Knicks ( season). Averaged 25.4 wins at UNLV over final five years there (four NCAA appearances and one NIT trip) and won at least 21 games each of those five seasons. The matchup will be televised by ESPN with Brent Musburger, Dick Vitale and Holly Rowe calling the action. TEXAS TECH RECAP AND NOTES No. 1/2 Oklahoma improved to 17-2 overall and 6-2 in the Big 12 with a home win over Texas Tech. The victory kept OU tied for first place in the league with West Virginia and Baylor. The win was the Sooners 21st straight at home (10-0 this year). Tonight s game marked OU s first at home as the AP s No. 1-ranked team since Feb. 22, 1989, when Billy Tubbs Sooners beat Lon Kruger s Kansas State Wildcats at Lloyd Noble Center. Lon Kruger improved to 7-2 against Texas Tech as OU s head coach. Tonight s win marked OU s third straight against the Red Raiders and sixth in the last seven meetings. Oklahoma went 12 for 23 (.522) from 3-point range, its school-record-tying 13th game already this season of making at least 10 treys (the Sooners made double-digit 3-pointers in 13 of their 33 contests). Senior guard Buddy Hield registered his seventh game this year of at least 30 points (same number as the rest of the players in the Big 12 combined) with a game-high 30-point effort. It s the most 30-point games by a Sooner in a season since Jeff Webster in the season (10). It marked Hield s 10th game this year of at least 25 points. In his first three seasons, he combined for six games of at least 25 points. Hield finished 9 for 12 from the field tonight, 5 for 8 from 3-point range and 7 for 8 from the free throw line. Senior guard Isaiah Cousins was 7 for 11 from the field and 2 for 3 from 3-point range en route to a 19-point night. After a 10-game stretch in which he shot.296 from the field and averaged 10.0 points, Cousins is shooting.688 (22 for 32) over the last three games and averaging 19.3 points. Junior guard Jordan Woodard was 3 for 5 from behind the arc and finished with 15 points, his eighth game in the last nine with at least 13 points. Woodard has scored at least 14 points 11 times this year after doing it three times in 35 games last year. Last season he shot.254 from 3-point range (17 makes) but this year is shooting a nation-leading.544 (49 makes). Woodard has shot at least 50 percent from behind the arc in 10 of the last 11 games. Senior forward Ryan Spangler registered 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting and added a team-high 7 rebounds to go along with 2 assists and a block in 25 minutes. He has pulled down at least 7 boards in 16 of 19 games this season. SCOUTING THE TIGERS The Tigers own a 13-7 record on the year, including a 6-2 mark in SEC play. LSU is 11-1 inside the Pete Maravich Center and 7-5 overall this season against non-conference foes. LSU is led by freshman phenom Ben Simmons, who is averaging 19.8 points, 12.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.8 steals in 34.3 minutes (all team-highs). His 12.7 boards per game ranks third in the country (ranked fourth in the nation with this 9.4 defensive rpg). Simmons, who has 15 double-doubles on the season, is shooting.553 ( ) from the field and.713 ( ) from the foul line (has only attempted three 3-pointers on the season).
