This is the program s third Sweet 16 appearance, the most recent coming in Through the first weekend of NCAA Tournament action, the Gamecocks are among the event s top 10 in eight statistical categories third in field goal percentage (.513), fourth in scoring margin (+21.5), sixth in field goal percentage defense (.328), seventh in offense (76.0 ppg) and steals (11.0), eighth in defense (54.5 ppg) and 10th in both assists (16.5) and turnover margin (+4.0). While the defensive numbers were not a surprise for a team ranked fourth in the nation in opponent points per game, the offensive numbers were somewhat unexpected for a team currently ranked only 179th in the nation in points per game and 116th in field goal percentage this season. The Gamecocks 25 wins this season are tied for the most since South Carolina joined the Southeastern Conference for the season. The squad also won 25 games en route to its Elite Eight berth. This season s 10 SEC wins tied that team s effort for the most in school history. South Carolina advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament for the first time in program history. The Gamecocks have defeated six nationally ranked opponents this season, including four wins over top-20 foes. It is the most wins over ranked foes since seven lost to the Gamecocks, a team that was also ranked for all but the first two weeks of the season. Two years later, then-no. 3 Stanford arrived in Columbia and posted a win over the Gamecocks in head coach Dawn Staley s first matchup against her former USA Basketball head coach. South Carolina senior guard La Keisha Sutton has played in two games against Stanford, averaging 9.0 points and 3.5 rebounds against the Cardinal. Junior guard Ieasia Walker was the team s top scorer in last season s matchup with Stanford, posting eight points, while junior forward Ashley Bruner led the way with seven rebounds, including six offensive. Familiar Foes The South Carolina and Stanford coaching staffs are far more familiar with each other than the two games they have played in the last four seasons. South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley played in her first Olympic games under Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer (1996). Staley, along with Gamecock assistant coach Nikki McCray, were part of the U.S. National Team that spent the season in residency for the first time in USA Basketball history. The group went 60-0 in international competition and helped spark two professional women s basketball leagues in the United States. The 1996 Olympic team, in addition to Staley as an individual, is on the nominee finalist list for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame this year. Five-Second Count South Carolina is in the midst of its best season in a decade, reaching the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the first time since and making the program s first appearance in the SEC Tournament semifinals earlier this month. The team s 25 victories are tied for the most during the program s time in the SEC, matching that of the team, which advanced to the Elite Eight. The Gamecocks found success behind a steady dose of stifling defense, ranked fourth in the nation, and a diversified offense. South Carolina has allowed more than 55 points just 11 times this season and have held five nationally ranked opponents to that mark or lower. Seven different players have led the team in scoring, and eight have scored in double figures at least once. South Carolina s 14-2 start earned the program s first national rank since the end of the season, and the Gamecocks have been ranked a total of five weeks this season. The Gamecocks had the most SEC wins since the team also had 10. Signature league wins included the program s first sweeps of Vanderbilt and Florida and its first win over Tennessee in Knoxville. NCAA Tournament Tidbits South Carolina is in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the third time in its nine appearances in the postseason event. Noted for their defensive prowess throughout the season, it was the Gamecocks offense that wowed opponents through the first two rounds, posting 76.0 points per game last weekend after entering the event scoring 60.3 points per game on the season. The team s 80 points against Eastern Michigan were the program s highest output since Jan. 10, 2010, at Alabama. South Carolina shot 51.3 percent from the field over the two wins over Eastern Michigan and #13/15 Purdue. The Gamecock defense was just as present in the two outings, holding the nation s second-highest scorer, Tavelyn James of EMU, to just 11 points, less than half her 24.2 season average. Against Purdue, South Carolina locked down Courtney Moses, who lit up South Dakota State for nine 3s two nights earlier, allowing her to take just two shots from beyond the arc, neither of which she made. The Gamecocks forced a combined 37 turnovers in the two outings, turning them into 43 of their 152 total points. SEC Tournament Flashback The Gamecocks advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament for the first time since joining the league for the season. After finishing the season tied for fourth in the league, South Carolina was the tournament s No. 6 seed. The Gamecocks cruised through the first round to defeat Alabama for the third time this season. South Carolina faced Georgia in the second round for the second-straight year, and the Gamecocks avenged both last year s loss at the event and a narrow Lady Bulldog victory earlier this season with a win in Nashville. It was a total team effort for South Carolina as only one Gamecock reached double-figure points. The game featured six ties and six lead changes before South Carolina clinched the win with six straight free throws down the stretch. Playing their third game in three days, the Gamecocks ran out of steam in the semifinals against Tennessee. Senior guard La Keisha Sutton led the team offensively with 11.0 points per game at the tournament, while freshman guard Tina Roy was the surprise standout, adding 8.7 points per game. In her first games back after missing the last two regular-season games due to an injury, freshman forward Aleighsa Welch was the team s top rebounder at 4.7 boards per game. Junior guard Ieasia Walker was second in the category with 4.3 boards per outing while tying for team-high honors with five assists. Gamecocks Against the Field South Carolina played 14 games this season against the 64 teams in the 2012 NCAA Tournament field, posting a 7-7 record against the eight different opponents. The Gamecocks were most successful against Florida (2-0), a No. 9 seed in the Des Moines Region which lost to Baylor in the second round, and Vanderbilt (2-0), the No. 7 seed in the Fresno Region, which fell to Duke on the second round. Carolina split its two meetings with Arkansas (No. 6 seed, Raleigh Region, lost to Texas A&M in second round), Georgia (No. 4 seed, Raleigh, lost to Marist in first round) and Tennessee (No. 2 seed, Des Moines Region, Sweet 16). The Gamecocks also faced Kentucky, (No. 2 seed, Kingston Region, Sweet 16) LSU (No. 5 seed, Kingston Region, lost to Penn State in second round) and Penn State (No. 4 seed, Kingston Region, Sweet 16). Awards Season South Carolina saw a program-record three players earn spots on the All-SEC teams this season as senior guards Markeshia Grant and La Keisha Sutton and junior guard Ieasia Walker grabbed spots on the second team, as selected by the coaches. Sutton was also named to the All-Defensive Team, and forward Aleighsa Welch was on the All- Freshman team. It is the first season that three Gamecocks have been honored by the SEC and the first appearance by a Gamecock on the league s All-Defensive Team. The Associated Press honored Grant and Sutton as honorable mention All-SEC. Front Runners South Carolina has taken a lead into the locker room at half time 27 times in 34 games this season, and the Gamecocks are 24-3 in those outings. The lone losses were at LSU (Jan. 12), vs. Kentucky (Jan. 15) and vs. Georgia (Feb. 16). In head coach Dawn Staley s fourth season at the helm, South Carolina is after leading at halftime and 2-4 when tied at the game s midway point. Managing March The Gamecocks are (.555) all-time in the month of March, including a 16-6 (.727) record at home. With most March games coming in postseason action, South Carolina is (.500) in neutral site games in the third month of the year. Under head coach Dawn Staley, South Carolina is 6-6 in March. 5 Staley s first year at the helm ( ), were 0-1 in and finished 2-2 last season. This season, South Carolina is 4-1 in March. Neutral Parties South Carolina is all-time in games played at a neutral site. Under head coach Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks are 9-9 at neutral sites. Reading the Rankings South Carolina appeared in the national polls this season for the first time since closing out the season ranked 16th. This season, the Gamecocks have appeared in one or both of the national polls five times (Jan. 9, Feb. 6, Feb. 13, Feb. 27, March 12), including this week. South Carolina spent the majority of the and seasons in the national rankings, peaking at No. 7 in the Jan. 21, 2002, poll. In its 38th season of women s basketball, South Carolina has gone in games in which it is nationally ranked, including a 6-5 mark this season. While ranked, the Gamecocks boast a 17-6 record against teams ranked below them in the polls and is against teams ranking above them. Gamecock head coach Dawn Staley has led a nationally ranked team before as her Temple squads were in the rankings for a total of 26 weeks during her eight seasons at the helm. She is one of 37 coaches who have coached multiple teams in the national rankings, only 21 of which are currently still coaching at the NCAA Division I level. Rating vs. the Ranked South Carolina is against nationally ranked teams in its 38th season of women s basketball. The Gamecocks have collected 29 of those 54 wins in Columbia, including 11 in Colonial Life Arena. In its basketball history, South Carolina s highest-ranked victim was a No. 3-ranked foe, and there are two of those victories, both over Auburn. The first came by a score at home on Dec. 29, The second was a decision over the Tigers on Feb. 27, 1993 in the final home game of the season. The Gamecocks have played 22 games all-time against team s ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation. In the Dawn Staley era, the highest ranked team the Gamecocks have defeated was at then-no. 8 Tennessee on Feb. 9, 2012, by a score of In the last three seasons South Carolina has defeated a nationally ranked team 11 times in 31 outings, including this year s 6-5 record. Success at 60 With its reliance on defense, South Carolina has not needed to generate huge offensive games this season, finding the most success when hovering right around its season average of 61.3 points. The Gamecocks are a perfect 19-0 this season when scoring at least 60 points, including a 5-0 mark when reaching the 70-point plateau. Locking It Down South Carolina has held an opponent to 48 or fewer points 14 times this season, the most in school history. South Carolina has never lost a game when holding an opponent to 48 or fewer points, which it has done in a total of 112 games (two games in the season were later forfeited). For Starters South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley has started the same five Gamecocks seniors Markeshia Grant, Courtney Newton, Charenee Stephens and La Keisha Sutton and junior Ieasia Walker in 27 of 34 games this season and has always liked the idea of bringing an offensive weapon off the bench. That strategy seems to be working to full effect this season as 42.2 percent of the Gamecocks scoring has come from someone not in the starting five. It is the highest percentage of bench scoring in Staley s tenure at South Carolina in , the bench netted 36.7 percent of the team s points; in , it was 27.5 percent; and in her inaugural season of it was 29.0 percent. The Gamecock bench has outscored that of their opponent in 30 of 34 games this season, during which the Gamecocks are South Carolina reserves have scored more than its starters in 11 games on the season with an 8-3 record. Freshman Aleighsa Welch is the top scorer off the bench and is most productive out of the starting lineup. In her 30 games off the bench, Welch averages 7.9 points while adding just 3.5 points per game in her two starting assignments. With both junior Ashley Bruner and Welch coming off the bench, the reserves have accounted for 56.3 percent of the team s rebounding this season. Welch has pulled down a team-high 5.9 boards per game, while Bruner has added 5.2. Stephens leads the starting group on the glass as her 5.0 per contest is third-best on the team. Bringing the Defense Through games of March 19, South Carolina defense ranked fourth in the nation in points allowed per game behind Connecticut (45.1), Hampton (47.6) and UAB (49.1). The Gamecocks have allowed more than 55 points just 11 times in 34 games this season at Purdue 61 (March 19), vs. Tennessee 74 (March 3), Georgia 61 (Feb. 16), Florida 58 (Feb. 12), at Arkansas 68 (Feb. 9), at Tennessee 60 (Feb. 2), at Vanderbilt 60 in overtime (Jan. 22), Kentucky 66 (Jan. 15), at LSU 58 (Jan. 12), at Drexel 58 (Dec. 28), at Xavier 56 (Nov. 30) and have held 14 opponents to 48 or fewer points. One of the more interesting facets of the Gamecocks stifling defense is that they have not necessarily held opponents to a sub-par shooting percentage. Through Staley s tenure, opponents have shot 40.6 percent from the field. South Carolina has shot 39.5 percent during that time with the Gamecocks final season field goal percentage exceeding that of its opponents just once ( ). The defensive success comes from limiting opponent shot attempts entirely, especially from the 3-point line. South Carolina has put up more total shots than its opponents every season except Staley s first ( ). Opponents have attempted more 3s than the Gamecocks just once as well ( ). This season alone, the Gamecocks have attempted 6.6 more field goals per game than their opponents, a number that rises to 7.9 when looking at 3-point attempts only. South Carolina has had fewer overall shot attempts than its opponent just four times this season Kentucky (Jan. 15), Mississippi State (Jan. 29), at Arkansas (Feb. 9) and at Alabama (Feb. 19) and is 2-2 in those games. Helping Hand With arguably the best point guard in international women s basketball history at the helm, South Carolina has been at its best when its assist numbers are highest. In the Dawn Staley era ( through present), the Gamecocks are when handing out 10 or more assists, including an 18-2 mark this season. When missing the 10-assist plateau, South Carolina is just overall with Staley, including a 6-25 mark in SEC action. That overall record includes this season s 7-7 ledger. In the NCAA tournament first round win over Eastern Michigan, the Gamecocks scored their 32 field goals with the benefit of 22 assists, the most in the Staley era. The outing eclipsed the 20-assist effort against Alabama on wv. 15, Assists Career Record Ieasia Walker La Keisha Sutton Markeshia Grant Courtney Newton Steals Career Record Ieasia Walker La Keisha Sutton Blocks Career Record Elem Ibiam Good Hands South Carolina is ranked 32nd in the country and fourth in the SEC with a +3.8 turnover margin. The trio of experienced guards have helped the Gamecocks on both sides of the turnover margin. The Gamecocks have forced 20 or more turnovers 13 times this season while committing 20 or more turnovers only six times (21 at Kentucky, Feb. 23; 21 at Alabama, Feb. 19; 23 at Arkansas, Feb. 9; 29 vs. Kentucky, Jan. 15; 25 at LSU, Jan. 12; 22 vs. College of Charleston, Nov. 23). The Gamecocks are 29th in the country in fewest turnovers per game with 14.2, the lowest average for the program since the team set the school record of 8.2. Free Throw Follies South Carolina s Achilles heel for much of the season has been free throw shooting as the Gamecocks are last in the SEC and 336th in the nation in free throw percentage (.587). South Carolina has shot better than 60.0 percent from the free throw line just 14 times in 34 games this season. Individually, only senior guard La Keisha Sutton is shooting over 70.0 percent from the charity stripe. She ranks fifth in the SEC in the category, hitting 75.6 percent of her attempts. Yet, in the last five games, South Carolina has shot 66.7 percent from the line, including three games hitting 70.0 percent or better. In fact, the Gamecocks sealed their SEC Tournament quarterfinal win over Georgia by hitting six straight free throws. Triple Play Coming into the season, may observers felt the fate of the Gamecocks season rested largely in the hands of its experienced backcourt seniors Markeshia Grant and La Keisha Sutton and junior Ieasia Walker. That has certainly been the case as between its points and assists, the trio has contributed to 63.9 percent of the team s 61.3 points per game. That number rose to 67.2 percent of the 58.5 points per SEC contest and 68.4 percent of the team s 76.0 points per NCAA Tournament game. Grant is leading the trio in scoring with her team-high 11.0 points per game, which ranks 20th in the SEC. Sutton is just behind in 25th place in the league with 10.4 points per game, which includes a team-high 11.8 points per league game (12th). Walker has been the primary play-maker on both sides of the ball, ranking seventh in the SEC in assists (3.2) and 10th in steals (1.8). She is also sixth with a 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio overall. Not So Fast While the backcourt got all the attention leading into the season, the frontcourt has made significant contributions to the team s success as well. Prior to the injury that held her out of the last two regular-season games, the unanticipated spark of the season was freshman forward Aleighsa Welch. Surprising head coach Dawn Staley with her consistent play and ability to absorb and apply every teaching point, the six-foot Goose Creek, S.C., product is fourth on the team with 7.6 points per game and leads the club in rebounding at 5.9 per contest, which ranks her 13th in the SEC. Shooting 59.1 percent from the field, she has led the SEC in the category for much of the last two months. In SEC action, Welch posted seven or more boards seven times in her 14 outings. While Welch has been the most consistent catalyst in the frontcourt over the full season, Bruner had a significant hand in much of the season s early success as she spent most of the season s first month as the team s top scorer and rebounder and continues to provide solid support numbers. She accounts for 7.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Her 18 rebounds against Penn State remain the second-most by an SEC player this season. In the NCAA Tournament, she has added 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, which is tied for the team high South Carolina Women s Basketball NCAA Tournament Guide 6

7 Senior Charenee Stephens was a force in the last four games of the regular season, adding 7.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game over the stretch. She was 17th in the SEC with 5.6 rebounds per league game. In NCAA Tournament action, Stephens has scored 6.5 points per game with 5.0 rebounds per outing. 500 on the Boards Earlier this season, senior forward Charenee Stephens became just the 25th Gamecock to reach the 500-rebound mark in her career. Currently in 19th place all-time with 596 career boards, Stephens reached the plateau with her six-rebound effort at Florida (Jan. 8). The last Gamecock to reach 500 rebounds was Demetress Adams, who accomplished the feat in 2008 en route to 736 boards during a career that spanned For Stephens, 42.1 percent of her rebounds (251) have come on the offense glass. It is the fourth-highest percentage of offensive rebounds of the 25 members of the 500-rebound club. Annie Lester ( ) holds the highest percentage with 44.3 percent of her 785 total rebounds coming on the offensive end. Jocelyn Penn ( ) reeled in 43.0 percent of hers on that end, and 42.5 percent of Johnson s 557 were offensive. Making a Name for Herself In December, senior guard La Keisha Sutton etched her name among the top guards in South Carolina women s basketball history. Handing out her 300th career assist against Drexel (Dec. 28) and scoring her 1,000th career point against South Carolina State (Dec. 14), she became just the 11th Gamecock to achieve both milestones in her career. Sutton is just the sixth Gamecock to reach the mark playing any part of her career since South Carolina joined the SEC for the season. The last to achieve the feat was Cristina Ciocan in Sutton s 1,000th career point game just 8:40 into the 100th game of her career on a trademark drive through the lane. Her effort against South Carolina State, which ended with 12 points, made her just the 27th player in school history to score at least 1,000 points. She also became the 48th player to play in 100 career games in that outing. Her 300th assist came just in time for the Gamecocks to hold off a late rally by Drexel. After driving the lane, Sutton found Ashley Bruner on the right block for a bucket that ended a four-minute scoring drought for the Gamecocks. Sutton currently has 353 career assists, which is 12th in school history. Sutton s 1,281 career points are tied for 16th most in school history. Sutton is just the 11th Gamecock to reach the 1,000-point plateau playing any part of her career in the SEC. She stands seventh in total points on that list. The Trenton, N.J., native became the program s 11th player to start at least 100 games in her career this season as well, reaching the mark on March 1 in the first round of the SEC Tournament. Mich /19 at Purdue Wish Granted Senior guard Markeshia Grant was named USBWA National Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week after her 27-point performance at then-#8/8 Tennessee on Feb. 2. The Tampa, Fla., native s seven 3-pointers paced the Gamecocks in their first win at Tennessee in program history and their first over the Lady Vols in since January The effort was just Grant s exclamation point in a five-game stretch (Jan. 26-Feb. 12) that saw her shoot 21-of-34 (.618) from 3-point range and average 18.2 points. Three of her six 20-point games this season came in that span, and she made at least two 3s in each of the contests. The senior entered the stretch shooting just 20.0 percent from 3-point range in SEC games, but finished the season ranked second in the league in that category (.382) and in made 3s per conference game (2.1). Hard Work and Dedication A mantra of this year s team, hard work and dedication also applies to the way senior Courtney Newton approaches community service, for which she earned a spot on the SEC Women s Basketball Community Service Team. The fifth-year senior not only is the first to join in team projects, but has also sought out and taken leadership roles in several on her own. Newton coaches a Girls on the Run team at Epworth Children s Home, was a facilitator for the Read with the Gamecocks Program while doing her practicum at H.B. Rhame Elementary and was a Big Sister. She instituted an organized Bible study for team through Fellowship of Christian Athletes and serves as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President, organizing community service projects for all teams to participate. Tough to Scout Throughout the preseason, head coach Dawn Staley talked about the versatility of her team as a key to the season s success. While she may have been speaking more about the various ways individual players could score, it has been the Gamecocks ability to get points from different players that has delivered the program s most wins since Seven different players have led the team in scoring Ashley Bruner, Markeshia Grant, Tina Roy, La Keisha Sutton, Charenee Stephens, Ieasia Walker and Aleighsa Welch. 8 Nail Biters Seven of the Gamecocks 16 regular-season SEC games were decided by five or fewer points, and South Carolina won four of those outings thanks to gutty play, especially from seniors, in the final five minutes. At Florida (Jan. 8), the Gamecocks saw their 10-point lead cut to five with 4:55 left in the game. Strong defense held the margin into the final 30 seconds of the game, but the Gators twice drew within a 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds. The first time they were turned away by Charenee Stephens offensive rebound and put back with 12 seconds to play. Leading by three with six seconds to go, La Keisha Sutton hit both ends of a 1-and-1 opportunity to put the game out of reach. At Vanderbilt (Jan. 22), South Carolina saw the Commodores erase a four-point deficit in the final two minute of regulation to send the game into overtime. Sutton s five points early in the OT period allowed the Gamecocks to reassert themselves and score the five-point win. At Tennessee (Feb. 2), the Gamecocks trailed the Lady Vols for 7:50 of the final 10 minutes, but delivered when it counted most. South Carolina turned a seven-point deficit at the five-minute mark into the program s first win in Knoxville by scoring 14 of the game s final 17 points in every way imaginable transition 3-pointer from Markeshia Grant, layup from Ashley Bruner, transition layup from Aleighsa Welch, driving layup by Ieasia Walker, and free throws by Walker and the final two by Sutton to make it a two-possession game with 12 seconds to play. Against Florida (Feb. 12), South Carolina answered a 6-0 run that had tied the score with a Grant 3-pointer with 5:02 left to play. The Gators closed within a point with 2:04 to play, but Sutton delivered a left-handed scoop shot on a clear-out to put the Gamecocks up with 32 seconds to go. Walker forced a travel on the Gators next possession, and Welch ripped down a defensive rebound with six seconds to go. Just look at its performances in games against five of the nation s top 25 offenses. In two games against Kentucky, which is currently ranked 17th in the nation in points per game, the Gamecocks held the Wildcats to 59.5 points per game 16.5 points below their average of 76.0 points per game entering the most recent matchup (Feb. 23). South Carolina allowed Kentucky just 53 points on its home floor (Feb. 23) after the Wildcats scored 66 in Columbia (Jan. 15) when they had averaged 81.1 points per game coming into that contest. The Gamecocks challenged Tennessee (currently 16th in scoring offense) in Knoxville (Feb. 2), limiting the Lady Vols, who entered the game scoring 75.9 points per game on the season to 60 points. The Gamecocks limited Vanderbilt (Jan. 5) to just 55 points after the Commodores entered the game ranked ninth in the country with 80.0 points per game. South Carolina crippled the nation s top 3-point shooting team, which entered the game hitting 43.8 percent from the arc and making pointers per game, allowing Vanderbilt to take just six 3-pointers in the game, making one of them. In the second meeting between the two teams, the Gamecocks were just as effective, yielding just 60 points in their overtime victory and allowing the Commodores to shoot just 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from 3-point range. Entering its Dec. 18 game against the Gamecocks, North Carolina led the nation in scoring, pouring in 87.5 points per game. South Carolina allowed the Tar Heels just 54.9 percent of that average 48 points the lowest scoring output for the Tar Heels since Connecticut held them to 47 points on Jan. 9, The first evidence of the stingy South Carolina defense came early in the season when the Gamecocks allowed Penn State, which is currently ranked eighth in the nation in scoring offense, just 55 points on Nov. 20. The Lady Lions have not scored lower than 65 points in any other game this season and have topped out at 103 in three games. Record Book Rewrite The South Carolina defense made its mark on the program s record book just 10 games into the season. The Gamecocks both tied and broke the previous record for fewest points allowed in a game holding Presbyterian to 24 to tie the mark on Nov. 27 then limiting SC State to just 21 to reset the record on Dec. 14. Presbyterian s 11 second-half points lowered that record by two, while SC State s 13 in the second stanza tied the previous low. The Lady Bulldogs became just the fifth opponent in Gamecock history to fail to reach double figures in the first half, and they now hold the Gamecocks record for lowest opponent field goal percentage at 12.5 (6-of-48). We re Back... South Carolina returns eight letterwinners from last season s Women s NIT team. All are juniors and seniors, including three starters. Additionally, the group includes the top two in points, rebounds and assists for the season. The two seniors that departed in May provided vast leadership and experience, but did not necessarily have a significant game-to-game statistical impact. The returning Gamecocks accounted for 74.5 percent of last season s scoring, 63.1 percent of rebounding and 81.4 percent of assists. The group of five seniors and three juniors amassed 103 starting assignments a year ago. Fresh Look South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley added five student-athletes to her roster this season, providing depth and height on the backcourt while building a foundation for the frontcourt. As a group, the newcomers accumulated two state titles, eight all-conference selections, six all-state honors and six player of the year awards during their pre- Gamecock careers. On the Horizon Head coach Dawn Staley inked four players in the early signing period. Below is a brief look at each of the future Gamecocks. Tiffany Davis (Houston, Texas/Westbury Christian) is a 5-foot-8 point guard rated the 29th in the 2012 class at that position. Before transferring to Westbury Christian, she helped Westside High to the 2011 District 20-5A championship game. Davis earned all-region and first-team all-district honors as a junior, netting 16.0 points per game. Asia Dozier (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley) is a 5-foot-11 guard who helped Spring Valley to state championships in 2009 and Rated the 34th-best guard in the 2012 class and a four-star player by ESPN Hoop/Gurlz, Dozier averaged 17.1 ppg and 3.8 apg as a junior as the Lady Vikings went As a freshman, her 18.3 ppg and 3.8 apg earned her Class 4A Area Player of the Year honors from The State newspaper. Her father, Perry, and uncle Terry Dozier also played basketball for the Gamecocks. Tiffany Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) is a 5-foot-10 guard who is rated among the top 50 players in the 2012 class by ESPN Hoop/Gurlz. She earned South Charlotte player of the year honors and was an Associated Press All-State selection after averaging 18.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.2 steals and 3.9 assists as a junior. She guided the Chargers to 21 straight wins in , including the program s second-straight NCISAA state title. Khadijah Sessions (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) is a 5-foot-6 point guard rated the seventh-best in the class at her position by ESPN Hoop/Gurlz. The 40th-ranked player overall, she averaged 17.9 points and 5.7 assists as a junior while leading the Seahawks to their second-straight AAA state championship. In her fourth season at the helm, she has put together a team that justifies that new stature as the Gamecocks are making their first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance in a decade. It is Staley s first Sweet 16 spot as a head coach after competing in three Final Fours as a player. One of the most decorated participants in United States women s basketball history, Staley was recognized this summer as one of the WNBA s Top 15, honoring the most influential players in the league s history. That award was just the start of a summer of accolades as the Women s Basketball Hall of Fame announced that she will be part of the Class of 2012 and she is one of the final nominees for induction to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. At the helm of the Gamecocks over the last four seasons, Staley has coached six All-SEC selections, three SEC All-Freshman team selections and the Associated Press SEC Rookie of the Year en route to a record. In , the Gamecocks have matched their highest win total (25) since joining the SEC for the season, tying the win total of team, which advanced to the Elight Eight. In her second season at South Carolina, Staley saw her team lift its SEC record from 2-12 to 7-9, the largest one-season percentage jump for the Gamecocks since the group turned a 2-12 mark the previous season into a 7-7 league slate. Staley s team continued that trend with an 8-8 SEC record in , which put them in a tie for fifth in the league. In , South Carolina posted three wins over nationally-ranked teams for the first time since the season, during which the Gamecocks were also ranked for most of the campaign. Staley has been a fixture in USA Basketball coaching, serving as a member of the women s staff from February 2006 through the Beijing Olympics in 2008, where the United States won its fourth-straight Olympic gold medal. She helped the team to a gold medal at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship in Chile to qualify for the 2008 Olympics after the team won bronze at the FIBA World Championship in Staley served as the head coach at the 2007 Pan American Games where the U.S. won its first gold medal since 1987 and served as an assistant coach for the silver medal winning team in the Good Luck Beijing Tournament, held in Beijing, China in April Staley also served as the USA Select Team Court Coach with her former head coach Debbie Ryan in the summer of As a player, Staley s career began with being named USA Today s National High School Player of the Year in 1988 as a senior at Dobbins Tech. She went on to a four-year career at Virginia that featured three trips to the NCAA Final Four, including a championship game appearance in 1991 after which she was named Most Outstanding Player. A two-time National Player of the Year (1991, 1992) and three-time Kodak All-American (1990, 1991, 1992), Staley was the ACC Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992 and the league s Rookie of the Year in 1989.She finished her career as the only player in ACC history to record more than 2,000 points, 700 rebounds, 700 assists and 400 steals. Staley was named to the ACC s 50th Anniversary Women s Basketball Team in 2002 and earned a spot on ESPN.com s Top Players of the Past 25 Years. In April 2008, she was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. On the international scene, Staley made her first appearance in a USA Basketball uniform as a member of the 1989 Junior World Championship Team and 15 years later played her final international game after helping the organization to a record. Olympic gold medals in 1996, 2000 and 2004 highlight her collection of 10 gold medals and one bronze on the world stage. She was twice named USA Basketball s Female Athlete of the Year (1994, 2004). Following the 1996 Olympic Games, Staley joined the Richmond Rage of the ABL, one of two women s basketball professional leagues started in the wake of USA Basketball s success on the world stage. After two all-star seasons with the organization, she switched leagues, signing with the WNBA s Charlotte Sting in Including the 2005 and 2006 seasons with the Houston Comets, Staley played in the WNBA All-Star game five times and was the first player in league history to represent both the East and West teams during her career. A member of the WNBA s All- Decade Team, as selected by a panel of national and WNBA-market media as well as the league s players and coaches, Staley twice earned the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award (1999, 2006) and won the WNBA Entrepreneurial Spirit Award in Following her retirement from the league, the WNBA began awarding the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award in 2007, honoring the player who best exemplifies the characteristics of a leader in the community in which she works or lives.
