Following an 11-game win streak against conference opponents, the Red Storm jumped two spots to No. 22 in the Feb. 17 Associated Press Top 25. St. John s also received votes in the Feb. 10 ESPN/USA Today Coach s Poll. The Red Storm is ranked third in the country in 3-point field goal defense after limiting opponents to a 24.2 percentage from behind the arc. Georgetown leads the all-time series but the Red Storm has won the last four meetings. 3 MEDIA POLICIES All media requests for interviews with St. John s women s basketball players and coaches should be directed to Assitant Director of Athletic Communications, Sagan Byrne, 24 hours in advance. Calling players at home or on cell phones without permission from the St. John s Athletic Communications office will not be tolerated. The players dorms, training room and weight room are also off limits. The St. John s locker room is closed to the media following the game. The team is allowed the customary 10-minute cooling off period and time with the coaching staff to meet with the team after each game. The St. John s Athletic Communications staff will secure coach and student-athletes for the interview room. Coach Joe Tartamella will enter with student-athletes, unless detained by radio/television interviews. Coach and student-athletes will complete interviews and be available for one-on-ones. The only pregame interviews allowed on game days will be for St. John s radio, and local or national television productions. No game day interviews will be allowed unless specifically requested for televised games. RADIO POLICY St. John s has permanent phone lines available to visiting radio stations at $100 per line. Arrangements for phone lines must be made through the Athletic Communications office. All radio stations will be limited to three working credentials on press row. The fee for phone lines must be paid in advance of the game. Make check payable to St. John s University. PHOTOGRAPHY REGULATIONS All photographers and camera operators must remain seated in baseline photo areas, as per NCAA regulations. Locations will be assigned for more crowded games. Season media credentials are issued to those outlets which cover St. John s Athletics on a regular basis. They do not guarantee working space in the media work area. With the exception of Red Storm beat reporters covering the team on a regular basis and producing regular reports, all passes are approved and issued on a game-by-game basis. Passes are not transferable and are subject to immediate revocation if transferred to non-working members of a media outlet. LAST TIME OUT Sophomore guard Aliyyah Handford scored 19 of her game-high 25 points in the second half while junior Amber Thompson pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds to go with nine points and two blocks as the No. 24 St. John s women s basketball team won its 11th consecutive BIG EAST contest with a win over Villanova in front of 1,938 fans for the Red Storm s annual Play4Kay game at Carnesecca Arena on Feb. 15. The Red Storm outrebounded Villanova to post a season-high plus-23 rebounding margin while holding a 22-8 edge in second chance points. St. John s 54 total rebounds and 20 on the offensive glass were both the team s secondhighest totals this season. SCOUTING THE HOYAS The Hoyas enter Tuesday night s contest at 8-18 overall and 2-12 in the BIG EAST having lost three out of their last four games. Georgetown is among the league leaders in field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense in the conference. GU shoots at a.417 percent clip from the field, good enough for third in the BIG EAST, while allowing its opponents to shoot only.375 percent which ranks second in the conference. Senior forward Andrea White and freshman center Natalie Butler swept the BIG EAST Weekly Awards for the Hoyas last week (Feb.10). White averaged 21.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals while Butler racked up 14.5 points and 15.5 boards in a 1-1 week for Georgetown. Butler s 15 rebounds in a loss to the Butler Bulldogs on Feb. 15 gave her 341 rebounds for her career, a new record for rebounds in a single season at Georgetown. ST. JOHN S & GEORGETOWN - THE SERIES Georgetown leads the all-time series but the Red Storm has won the last four meetings. Senior Eugeneia McPherson and sophomore Danaejah Grant notched 16 points apiece to lead four Red Storm players in double figures as the St. John s women s basketball team posted a late-game rally to claim its sixth consecutive victory in a home triumph over Georgetown in BIG EAST play from Carnesecca Arena on Jan. 26. The Red Storm is 9-17 when playing in the nation s capital against the Hoyas with its last win coming on Feb 27, 2012, a St. John s victory. RED STORM AGAINST BIG EAST FOES The Red Storm sits at 12-1 in BIG EAST action and has two student-athletes averaging double-digits when playing conference foes as St. John s owns a scoring margin. Aliyyah Handford leads the way in league play with 12.8 points per game and Danaejah Grant is chipping in 12.4 ppg. On the defensive side, the Red Storm owns a +7.3 rebounding margin over conference foes, recording 5.9 steals per game and tallying 3.7 blocks per game. ROAD TRIPS In 10 road contests this year, the Red Storm is 7-3. At away venues, the Red Storm are outscoring opponents 65.7 to 62.9 after earning its six wins by an average of 7.3 points. On the road, Aliyyah Handford leads St. John s with 16.2 points per game and Amber Thompson pulls in a team-best 8.1 rebounds per game.

St. John s Feb. 10 ranking of No. 24 marked the first time since Nov. 26, 2012 when the Red Storm was ranked No. 17 with 314 points. The Red Storm has received votes in back-to-back weeks in the USA Today Coaches Poll as SJU earned its first in-season votes (15) in the poll on Feb. 4 and got 22 nods on Feb 11. EYES ON 20 St. John s enters the nation s capital one victory shy of registering the program s 14th 20-win season and fourth in the past five seasons. If the Red Storm capture a W at Georgetown, it would be second-year head coach Joe Tartamella s first 20-win campaign making him St. John s fifth coach to reach the milestone. St. John s first 20-win season was in when then-head coach Vickie Kresse led the Red Storm to a 23-8 season. Kresse had three-consecutive 20-win seasons. BRING OUT THE BROOMS The Red Storm owns a 12-1 conference record with its only loss coming at the hands of Xavier on Jan. 4. St. John s has faced four BIG EAST opponents twice this season and swept three of the league series taking down Seton Hall, Butler and Villanova both at home and on the road. RED STORM 3-POINT DEFENSE RANKS TOP-5 IN THE COUNTRY The Red Storm defense has been solid in , holding opponents to just 61.2 points per game. St. John s foes are hitting just 24.2 percent of their attempts from behind the arc ranking the Red Storm 4th in the country in 3-point field goal defense. St. John s jumped to the nation s third ranked 3FG defense on Feb. 3 after limiting Seton Hall to a 0.00 mark from behind the arc on Feb. 1 when the Pirates went 0-for-12. It was the best 3-point defensive effort since Feb. 17, 2013 when the Red Storm held Cincinnati to a.000 (0-for-6) mark at Carnesecca. In , the Red Storm has limited two opponents to under a 10.0 percent mark from the 3-point with the most recent coming at Seton Hall. Additionally, the Red Storm held Marquette 1-of-14 for a 7.1 percentage and in the conference opener against Seton Hall, St. John s limited the Pirates to a 9.1 (1-for-11) percentage from behind the arc. GRANT LEADS SJU S BENCH SPARK The St. John s bench has given the Red Storm invaluable minutes and provided an instant spark when needed most, averaging 21.1 points per game this season. Sophomore transfer Danaejah Grant leads the Red Storm reserves with 11.5 points per game shooting a 43.2 mark from the field in her 24.2 minutes per contest. Prior to Grant s return to the hardwood due to transfer rules, St. John s was averaging 13.3 bench points. 5 TWO TIME BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK Aliyyah Handford was tabbed the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Feb. 17 after guiding St. John s to its 11th-straight win as she scored 25 points in a win over Villanova on Feb. 15. The sophomore guard went 10-for-18 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 at the charity stripe. It marks her second weekly accolade of the season and second of her career. Handford earned her first career BIG EAST Player of the Week nod on Dec. 23 after guiding the Red Storm to a win over No. 24 Texas A&M in the Maggie Dixon Classic. She lifted St. John s to victory over the Aggies behind a game-high 27 points, with the biggest two points coming on her go-ahead layup with 2.8 seconds remaining. Handford went 11-for-18 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line in her fifth 20-plus performance of the season. SJU RECORD WATCH Fifth-year senior Eugeneia McPherson has cemented her name in the St. John s record book as she nears the conclusion of her Red Storm career. McPherson is currently tied in seventh place for 3-point field goals made in a career with 97 and is tied for fifth in career made free throws with 264. MCPHERSON DISHING IT OUT Since making her return to the hardwood, Eugeneia McPherson has averaged a teamhigh 4.6 assists per game and in 13 of her 15 starts McPherson has recorded game-highs in assists each game. MCPHERSON JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB Senior guard Eugeneia McPherson scored her 999th and 1,000th career points on a pair of free throws in a win at Seton Hall on Feb. 1, She became St. John s women s basketball 20th member of the illustrious 1,000-point club. McPherson returns to the court after suffering a season-ending injury just five games into the season, which she opened with a 14-point, five-assist game against Texas in the WBI Tip Off Invitational. McPherson has averaged 8.5 points per game for her St. John s career and was the only player to start and play in all 34 games in the campaign, her last full season, finishing as the Red Storm s third-highest scorer with an average of 11.8 points per game and finishing with a team-high 32 3-pointers. SHARP-SHOOTING SENIORS St. John s trio of seniors lead the Red Storm from behind the arc combining for 60 of the squad s 88 3-pointers. Briana Brown has a team-high 27 3-pointers, Eugeneia McPherson has knocked in 17 and Keylantra Langley has hit 16. KEEPING IT CLOSE Overall, the Red Storm owns a +6.8 scoring margin over opponents in season but has won 10 of its 19 victories by a single digit margin and is 6-0 when wining by a 1-3 scoring margin. This is the third consecutive year that the Red Storm has posted 10 single digit wins. TWICE AS NICE: THOMPSON NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Amber Thompson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this month following a pair a stellar performances in two conference wins for the Red Storm over the past week. Thompson, whose two Honor Roll appearances this season are the first of her career, averaged 12.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game in a 2-0 week for the Red Storm that included hard-fought victories against Villanova at The Pavilion on Jan. 22, and over Georgetown at Carnesecca Arena on Jan. 26. She turned the ball over just once in her 50 minutes on the floor in the two games and shot 83.3 percent (10-for-12) from the floor while hitting all four of her free throw attempts. Over the two-game stretch eight of Thompson s 15 rebounds came on the offensive glass. 6 ELEVEN-GAME BIG EAST WIN STREAK SETS PROGRAM HIGH The Red Storm set a program high eleven-straight BIG EAST wins with its victory over Villanova on Feb. 15. The stretch dates back to St. John s win over Creighton on Jan. 8. Previous to this year s 11 consecutive wins, the longest league win stretch was in when the Red Storm won eight in a row, including a one-point win at No. 2 UConn. THOMPSON JOINS ELITE ALUMNI Junior forward Amber Thompson joins an elite group of Red Storm women s basketball alumna becoming only the 19th member of the 500 point 500 rebound club. Thompson currently has scored 597 points and grabbed 618 rebounds in her three years at St. John s. HOME SWEET HOME The Red Storm has posted a 11-2 overall mark and is 6-0 in the BIG EAST when playing at Carnesecca Arena in the season. When playing in front of the home crowd, Aliyyah Handford (15.4 ppg), Danaejah Grant (13.0 ppg) and Briana Brown (10.7 ppg) average double figures, while Amber Thompson leads the way with 9.9 rebounds per game. RED STORM IN JANUARY The Red Storm concluded the month of January with a 7-1 overall and conference record a perfect mark at Carnesecca Arena, 4-0. Like December, Aliyyah Handford led the team in scoring in January with 12.6 points per game, while also recording a team-best 15 steals. Amber Thompson exploded in January averaging 10.4 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game earning a pair of nods to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Briana Brown led the squad in 3-point percentage where she shot at a.478 percent clip from behind arc on 11-of-23 shooting. Eugeneia McPherson led the squad in assists in January with 34. After seeing her first action in the Red and White in late December, Danaejah Grant averaged 12.0 points per contest in January, good enough for second on the team. In January, St. John s also saw its first votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Red Storm first picked up seven votes in the Jan. 20 edition and then picked up 14 votes in the final poll of the month. THOMPSON TAKING OVER Junior Amber Thompson has kicked it into high gear since the Red Storm s upset victory over No. 24 Texas A&M in the Maggie Dixon Classic. In St. John s last 15 games, Thompson is averaging 9.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Thompson, scoring in double figures in seven out of St. John s last 13 outings, has notched four double-doubles during her surge and now has 12 in her three-year career. In the Red Storm s last five games, Thompson has grabbed 15-plus rebounds three times and pulled down a career-high 17 boards against Villanova on Feb. 15. In BIG EAST action, Thompson leads the team and is third in the conference in rebounding with 10.4 grabs per game and is adding 9.4 points per game. RED STORM TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MARQUETTE S MISHAPS St. John s forced Marquette into 25 turnovers in its two-point victory on Jan. 18 and turned the Golden Eagles mishaps into 25 points. It marked the eighth time in that the Red Storm registered 20-plus points off of opponent s turnovers. LIGHTS OUT AT DEPAUL St. John s posted its highest shooting percentage since Feb. 25, 2009 in a win at DePaul on Jan. 11, making 35-of-58 attempts from the field for a 60.3 percentage. Junior Amber Thompson and freshman Jade Walker each went 4-for-4 from the floor, while sophomore Danaejah Grant chipped in with a 7-for-10 performance. MCPHERSON S TRIUMPHANT RETURN Following a 12-month hiatus, senior Eugeneia McPherson solidified that her return to the hardwood would be known. The fifth-year guard averaged 9.4 points, 4.0 assists, 1.4 rebounds and 0.8 steals in her first five games. In the win over the Gaels, St. John s had a 4.5 assist-to-turnover ratio, the highest in the past 20 years. NOVEMBER NUMBERS St. John s wrapped up a stellar month of November at 5-1 overall and a perfect record at Carnesecca Arena, 4-0. St. John s 4-0 start to the season was its best since the campaign when the Red Storm won its first seven games. After averaging 24.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in November, sophomore guard Aliyyah Handford was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice. It was her first time being tabbed to the Honor Roll in her young St. John s career. The Red Storm has had three different players record double-doubles in sophomore guards Ashley Perez, Aliyyah Handford and junior forward Amber Thompson. TARTAMELLA ANNOUNCES NLI SIGNINGS FOR 12TH RANKED RECRUITING CLASS In his second season at the helm of the Red Storm, Joe Tartamella has inked the 12th best college recruiting class according to BlueStar Basketball. Tamesha Sox Alexander, Imani Littleton, Crystal Simmons and Tonoia Wade will join St. John s for the season after signing NLI s. ST. JOHN S IN BIG EAST OPENERS Since joining the BIG EAST in the season, St. John s is overall in conference openers. The Red Storm opened the conference slate with a win over Seton Hall on Dec. 28. Under the direction of head coach Don Perrelli, St. John s won its first-ever BIG EAST regular season opener, 69-58, on the road against Pittsburgh (Dec. 8, 1982). RED STORM IN SEASON OPENERS The Red Storm is 8-3 in season-openers over the last 11 seasons. St. John s won the thrilling overtime contest at Sacred Heart on Nov. 8. Despite the first-career doubledouble from Briana Brown, Texas topped No. 14/13 St. John s, 70-60, in last year s opener at the WBI Tip Off Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla. 8 HANDFORD S CAREER NIGHT Sophomore guard Aliyyah Handford scored a career-high 32 points and recorded her second consecutive double-double in the Red Storm s victory over Iona. The last Red Storm player to record back-to-back doubledoubles was Amber Thompson, who scored 20 points and 16 rebounds on March 4 against DePaul and recorded 14 points and 12 boards against Seton Hall in the BIG EAST Tournament on March 9. The Newark, N.J. native originally scored a career-high 25 points in St. John s first game of the season, a OT win against Sacred Heart, only to break it the very next contest when she dropped 35 points on the Gaels. Handford s two double-doubles were the first and second of her young St. John s career. DOUBLE-DOUBLE PARTY St. John s is celebrating the opening of a new season with double-double parties as Aliyyah Handford registered three and Ashley Perez and Amber Thompson each recorded one apiece in the first five games of the season. In the Red Storm s overtime victory over Sacred Heart on Nov. 8 sophomores Perez and Handford recorded their first career double-doubles. Handford had 25 points and 13 rebounds while Perez recorded 15 points and 13 boards. It was the first time since Nov. 11 of last season, a victory over UCF, that St. John s had two or more players record double-doubles. Three players, seniors Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith and junior Briana Brown, earned doubledoubles against the Knights in head coach Joe Tartamella s first coaching victory at St. John s. JOHN S FIRST-EVER WNBA DRAFT PICKS On April 16, 2013, St. John s senior guards Nadirah McKenith and Shenneika Smith became the St. John s basketball program s first ever WNBA draft picks as McKenith was picked up by the Washington Mystics No. 17 overall and Smith was taken by the New York Liberty with the 25th pick. The dynamic duo of McKenith and Smith were an integral part of St. John s four-straight NCAA Tournament berths, during the most successful four years in St. John s women s basketball history. In their senior seasons, both were tabbed to the All-BIG EAST first team and the Preseason Naismith Trophy Early Season Watch List. St. John s has had five players in the past five years sign professional contracts overseas. McKenith and Smith s former teammates Da Shena Stevens and Centhya Coco Hart both played professionally last season with Stevens in Switzerland and Hart in Germany. Tina Sten (Class of 2008) played in the same league as Hart during the season in Germany. In addition to Stevens, Hart and Sten, Joy McCorvey (Class of 2010), previously played in Germany with the DBBL s TUS Jena Burgaupark Lady Baskets and Monique McLean (Class of 2009) played for the Greek franchise, Olympiakos. A QUICK LOOK BACK AT THE SEASON In his first season at the helm of the Red Storm, head coach Joe Tartamella led his squad to an overall record of and a threeway tie for third place with an 11-5 mark in BIG EAST play. After reaching the Big Dance in each of their first three seasons, seniors Nadirah McKenith and Shenneika Smith led St. John s to its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Their first round matchup against Dayton was held at Carnesecca Arena, the Red Storm s home court, in the Queens Regional. Multiple Red Storm players earned postseason honors including freshman Aliyyah Handford being selected to the All-Freshman Team, and McKenith and Smith being named BIG EAST All-Conference First Team. A HELPING HAND IN THE COMMUNITY On Oct. 20, head coach Joe Tartamella and his squad took part in the American Cancer Society s Making Strides Against Breast Walk in Central Park where they handed out water to participants. The Central Park event featured approximately 60,000 people and raised three million dollars. The five-mile walk, a celebration of survivorship and an occasion to express hope, started and ended at the 72nd St. Bandshell and was held completely in Central Park. The St. John s men s and women s basketball teams joined forces with the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) on Saturday, Sept. 28 for the third-annual St. John s Dribble For The Cure, an event that welcomed more than 500 members of the SJU community and raised more than $55,000 for pediatric cancer research in the New York City area. The star-studded event featured special appearances from St. John s Hall of Fame coaches Lou Carnesecca and Jack Kaiser as well the head coach of the New York Knicks, Mike Woodson. 9 NEW FACES ON THE BENCH Head coach Joe Tartamella has made some key additions to his bench staff ahead of the Red Storm s quest for a fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. New to the St. John s sidelines this season are assistant coach Joseph Pellicane, video coordinator Alioune Ndiaye and graduate assistants Seja Gamble and Torey Northup-Jones. Pellicane is a familiar face at St. John s as he begins his second stint as an assistant coach for the Red Storm after serving as the top assistant from Before returning to Queens, N.Y., Pellicane has spent nine out of the 10 years as the head coach of nearby Dowling College s women s basketball program, where he boasted a (.640) record and led the Golden Lions to the 2013 Division II National Championship finals and two NCAA tournament berths. A native of Dakar, Senegal, Ndiaye spent the last two seasons working under Pellicane as an assistant coach at his alma mater Dowling College, where he helped the Golden Lions earn backto-back NCAA Tournament berths and reach the NCAA Tournament Final in Ndiaye had a standout career as a studentathlete for Dowling College from , serving as captain and two-year starting center before playing professionally for the New York Wizards of the Eastern Basketball Alliance. Gamble spent the last four seasons in the ECC Conference, playing for Pellicane at Dowling. A four-year starter at guard, she was known for her defensive efforts and played a significant role on the most decorated women s basketball team in program history. Northup-Jones spent the last four seasons in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, playing for head coach Linda Cimino at Caldwell College. She finished her career with 1,850 career points to rank fourth all-time at Caldwell and holds the school record with 234 three-pointers made and a.805 career free throw percentage (.805). The Red Storm had four student-athletes register double figures to move to 1-0 on the season. Keylantra Langley scored eight of her 15 points in the overtime period, including the Red Storm s final five of the contest and the go-ahead layup with 1:11 remaining on the clock to give St. John s a advantage it would not relinquish. Langely opened overtime with a 3-pointer to put the Red Storm up, 67-66, and added three free throws in the final 31 seconds to seal the opening-night victory. ST. JOHN S AGAINST THE SEC The Red Storm has a 4-11 record against SEC opponents dating back to St. John s last topped an SEC squad on Dec. 29, 1991, a win over Kentucky in Queens. Most recently, the Red Storm fell to Florida, 72-68, on Nov. 26, 2013 and Auburn, 69-55, on Dec. 6, UP NEXT St. John s concludes a two-game road swing on Sunday, Feb. 23, when the Red Storm faces Creighton at 3 p.m. at D.J. 10 Joe Tartamella was introduced as the eighth head coach in the history of the St. John s women s basketball program on April 27, Regarded as one of the top up-and-coming mentors in women s basketball, Tartamella s coaching career has been forged over a nine-year tenure assisting St. John s all-time winningest coach Kim Barnes Arico ( ). Beginning as a Red Storm graduate assistant in 2002, Tartamella, 34, worked his way through the ranks and served as Barnes Arico s associate head coach for the four seasons leading up to his elevation to head coach. He has been an integral part of a staff that has been to five NCAA Tournaments, including St. John s run to its first-ever NCAA Sweet 16 in As a program, St. John s has been to the NCAA Tournament eight times, five with Tartamella on staff. In his 10-year career with the Red Storm, Tartamella has played a vital role in helping turn around the St. John s women s basketball program and lead it to its present successes. During Tartamella s tenure, St. John s has advanced to 10 BIG EAST Tournaments, two Women s National Invitation Tournament appearances, including a WNIT Quarterfinals in , and five NCAA Tournaments, including the program s first NCAA Tournament berth in more than 17 years during the campaign, and St. John s first-ever NCAA Regional Semifinal appearance in Tartamella has coached 22 All-BIG EAST and All-Rookie players, 15 All-Met selections and has enjoyed many a national Top 25 ranking during his time at St. John s, including a program-best No. 13 Associated Press ranking during the campaign. In his first season as head coach, Tartamella guided the Red Storm to its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament berth after finishing the season tied for third in the BIG EAST Conference with an 11-5 record and winning eight of its last 10 regular season games. St. John s was the host school for the First and Second Rounds of the 2013 NCAA Tournament and the Red Storm earned the chance to play at home against Dayton in mid-march. Against Rutgers on Jan. 6, 2013, Tartamella killed two birds with one stone as he recorded his first-career BIG EAST win, 48-44, over the Scarlet Knights, as well as his first BIG EAST road win. On March 9, 2013 Tartamella notched his first BIG EAST Tournament victory, 51-45, against Seton Hall. During the postseason, Tartamella s team enjoyed numerous honors and accolades, including the first-ever WNBA Draft selections for St. John s in Nadirah McKenith and Shenneika Smith. McKenith went on to become the first player in St. John s history signed to a WNBA contract as she played the 2013 season with the Washington Mystics. Both McKenith and Smith were named WBCA All-America honorable mention as well as All-BIG EAST and All-Met first team honorees. Tartamella s first signed recruit, Aliyyah Handford was voted the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Rookie of the Year as well as a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST all-freshman team. In , Tartamella s first season as associate head coach, he helped then-freshman Da Shena Stevens become one of the best rookies in St. John s history, as she broke the rookie scoring record and became the second player in program history to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Stevens further developed under his tutelage, as she was named a 2010 Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention Selection, an All-BIG EAST First Team honoree and the 2010 MBWA Player of the Year. Since my arrival to St. John s, it quickly became evident that Joe Tartamella is a rising star in the coaching profession. He possesses all the vital attributes necessary to be a winning coach. Joe s coaching prowess and work ethic will allow him to build on the program s recent success. It s good to see his loyalty to the University rewarded with this head coaching opportunity. 11 WOMEN S BASKETBALL Game Notes Head Coach Joe Tartamella During the successful season, Tartamella helped St. John s to its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance as a programbest No. 3 seed. St. John s advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals for the first time in program history and enjoyed a final record. St. John s was also the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and advanced to the Tournament s semifinals for the first time since Tartamella s scouting and game-planning tactics have proved to be invaluable as St. John s has enjoyed numerous victories over Top 25 opponents, including the team s three historic upset-victories over Notre Dame when the Irish were ranked No. 13 in , No. 9 in and No. 4/3 in In , he boasted the winning scout in St. John s win over then-no. 2 Connecticut on Feb. 18, ending the Huskies 99-game home-winning streak. With Tartamella as part of Barnes Arico s staff, the Red Storm has claimed a.560 winning percentage. Tartamella is also known for his recruiting prowess and has consistently brought in top-rated talent for the Red Storm. Highlighting his role as recruiting coordinator was the class that ESPN.com ranked as 10th best in the nation and No. 1 in the BIG EAST. The class, seniors during the season, included All- BIG EAST Freshmen Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith, who blossomed into national headliners as they both were selected in the 2013 WNBA draft and both signed professional contracts in the summer of 2013, in addition to their many collegiate accolades and records broken. For the upcoming season, Tartamella signed four new players to his roster, including two transfers from the Atlantic Coast Conference in Danaejah Grant, a former McDonald s All-American Team Nominee and New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year Finalist, and Selina Archer, formerly ranked No. 39 as a center and 86th overall for the class of His two rookies for his second season as head coach include Aaliyah Lewis, a four-star point guard, ranked No. 22 at her position by ESPN HoopGurlz and Jade Walker, HoopGurlz s 63rd best guard/forward in the country. The foursome joins a McKenith, Smith, and All-Met Freshman of the Year Aliyyah Handford in a list of successful recruits for Tartamella and the Red Storm. Prior to St. John s, Tartamella spent a year as an assistant men s basketball coach under the direction of head coach Tom Spina at SUNY Maritime College in Throgs Neck, N.Y. His responsibilities included recruiting and developing long and short-range strategies, administering game plans to players for execution in practice and games, and organizing and implementing pre- and post-season conditioning programs. Tartamella also served as the assistant director of career services at SUNY Maritime College. After graduating from James Madison University in 2001 with a bachelor s degree in business administration in marketing information, he coached alongside Joe Castiglie the most successful coach in Stony Brook men s basketball history at St. Anthony s High School. After his stint coaching boys varsity, Tartamella was hired as the graduate assistant coach for the St. John s women s basketball team. A native of St. James, N.Y., Tartamella earned his master s degree in marketing management from St. John s in A fiery competitor as a coach and athlete, Tartamella was a two-sport star at Smithtown High School, enjoying success as a basketball and baseball player. His success as a prep star resulted in numerous scholarship offers before an injury ended his promising playing career and led him to coaching. A member of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), Tartamella was invited guest to the Nike Villa 7 Coaches Consortium in 2010 and in The consortium was developed to bring together university athletic directors and the country s elite assistant basketball coaches in an effort to prepare coaches for the next level. In 2013, Tartamella was invited back to the Nike Villa 7 as a panelist/speaker in Minneapolis, Minn. In June 2013, he was one of 32 women s college basketball coaches to be involved in the first session of the Center For Coaching Excellence (CCE) at Columbia University. Tartamella and his wife Shannon reside in Long Island, New York.
