All-time AU career steals leader Chanel Sprigss scored 13 points, grabbed seven boards and snagged five steals, but the Eagles couldn t overcome 29 percent shooting in the loss. American encounters a Tribe squad that has not yet played this season. 2 THE LAST TIME OUT Senior forward Chanel Hunt on Friday scored her 1,000th career point with 17:17 left in the second half at Kent State, but the American University women s basketball team lost its season opener on the road to Kent State, The Eagles, playing under Melissa McFerrin in her regular season debut as a head coach, trailed by just three at halftime, but turnovers eventually caught up with AU. American turned the ball over six times in the first 5:45 of the second half, and a three-point deficit for the Eagles turned into a 17-point hole on the strength of a 20-6 run by the Golden Flashes. American finished with 27 total turnovers. Both teams started slow, as they combined for just eight points in the first 3:09 of the game. Hunt hit her first shot of the game -- a layup at the 18:54 mark -- and then senior guard Joanna Barnes took over the for the Eagles. Barnes scored AU s next six points, and gave the visitors their only lead of the game, 8-5, on a jumper at the 16:13 mark. The Golden Flashes regained the lead with a jumper and a pair of free throws by Malika Willoughby and Kent State never trailed again. The Eagles were not without some good individual results. Senior Jenyce Woodruff recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, setting a personal best for boards in the process. Hunt scored 10 points, giving her 1,004 points in her fourth season with AU. However, Barnes was the goto player for the Eagles, scoring 17 points on a seven-of-12 performance from the field and adding seven rebounds. Lindsay Shearer led the hosts with 23 points. Kent State goes to 1-0 on the season. American falls to 0-1 on the season and overall in season openers. 1,000-POINT SCORER With her sixth point against Kent State on Friday night, Chanel Hunt became the 11th Eagle to score 1,000 career points. She now has 1,0004 career points, just 12 points out of the 10th spot. Hunt is on pace to break into AU s all-time top-five in scoring. HOME, SWEET HOME Bender Arena has been good to the Eagles since it opened on Jan. 23, All-time, American has compiled a (.634) record. Although the Eagles struggled in Bender last season (7-5), American hopes it will return to the form that it had at home in , when the Eagles went 10-2 in Bender.
