Seattle swept Los Angeles (4-0) during the 2015 season, including an home opener win on June 6, If Seattle wins tonight, the win would tie the longest win streak vs. LA in Storm history (5-straight wins, 5/6/10-8/21/10). This is the fifth consecutive season that Seattle faces Los Angeles in the regular-season opener. The Sparks have won three of the last four openers RESULTS VS. LOS ANGELES Seattle 86, Los Angeles 61 - KeyArena, Seattle, WA. (6/6/15) Once the smoke cleared of the opening night festivities, the Storm found itself trailing early but a strong performance that stemmed the second and third quarters pushed Seattle to the win over Los Angeles on Saturday night. With Crystal Langhorne having scored the last two baskets of the first half to put Seattle up 35-32, the Storm carried that momentum into the second and hit three straight layups to go along with a pair of free throws from Jewell Loyd to take a lead. Stemming from the second quarter and into the third, the Storm went on a 12-0 run and held Los Angeles scoreless for 2:07 during that stretch.langhorne, who had six points during the run, finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. With the Storm leading 8-6, Los Angeles answered with a run of its own and scored the next eight points with four coming from newcomer Erin Phillips to take a 14-8 lead. But Renee Montgomery brought the Storm back and played a part of the scoring in six of the team s last seven possessions of the first as she had eight points and an assist to help close the quarter on a 10-4 run, putting them up She finished the half with eight points and ended with a game-high 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting to go along with five assists. (6/14/15) The Storm struggled offensively in the first half but it was a career performance from Abby Bishop and a strong defensive showing that brought Seattle back for the win over Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. The win snapped a two-game skid for the Storm (2-2) and marked the second straight victory over the Sparks. After a cold shooting first half, the Storm made a push in the middle of the third. With Seattle trailing by 11 with 7:34 in the quarter, Jenna O Hea found Alysha Clark in the right corner for the three to cut the Los Angeles lead to single digits. Bishop, who scored eight points in the third, finished with a career-high 18 points on 7-for-12 from the field. Later in the quarter, Renee Montgomery took an inbound pass at the basket and missed the layup but Quanitra Hollingsworth was there to clean it up and got the basket and the foul to pull the score to It capped off a 10-0 run for Seattle. The Storm continued to hang around in the fourth and that is when Bishop took over again. Trailing 50-48, Sue Bird found a cutting Bishop in the lane and she hit the floater and drew the foul to tie it game at 50. Seattle s stifling defense took care of the rest as it held Los Angeles to 25.9 percent in the second half. (7/16/15) Rookies Jewell Loyd and Ramu Tokashiki were the catalysts and the defense took care of the rest for the Storm on Wednesday to beat Los Angeles Loyd and Tokashiki got Seattle on top in the third when the 6-foot-3 forward hit a jumper from the wing to make it a one-point game and it was followed with a steal and a fastbreak layup for Loyd to take a lead. Loyd led the team with 13 points and Tokashiki chipped in with 10. After a pair of free throws from Alysha Clark gave Seattle a lead. Later in the quarter, Los Angeles went on a 6-0 burst with two straight baskets from Erin Phillips to cut the Storm lead to one but the run was stomped out when Sue Bird found Renee Montgomery in the right corner for a three to push the advantage back to four. The Storm took its largest lead of the night out of the gates in the fourth when Abby Bishop hit a three to make it a game. Both offenses went cold after that but Los Angeles managed to close within five with 4:22 left. While it was the younger players that got the Storm the lead, it was the veterans that closed it out. Jumpers from Clark, Crystal Langhorne, and one from Bird with 1:31 left put the game out of reach. Seattle held the Sparks to 30.8 percent shooting in the fourth and forced six turnovers. Nneka Ogwumike, who came in averaging 18.5 points, was held to 12 points and a mere four in the second half. 5 LAST GAME Seattle 76, Phoenix 70 - Talking Stick Resort Arena, Phoenix, Ariz. (5/8/16) (preseason) The Seattle Storm closed out its preseason slate with a road win over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday at Talking Stick Resort Arena. Alysha Clark led the way with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting for the Storm, which used a dominant third quarter to bounce back from its loss to Phoenix in the preseason opener last Wednesday. Clark had a tremendous first half, scoring eight points in the first quarter and seven in the second before heading to the bench with three fouls. Point guard Sue Bird assisted on three of Clark s first four baskets. Before picking up her third foul, Clark scored on two straight possessions to trim Phoenix s lead from eight to three at the midway point of the second quarter. The Storm jumped out to a 12-7 edge early on, but Phoenix exploded for 18 points in the final five minutes of the first quarter to take a lead. Both teams went cold in the second period, putting up just 12 points apiece on 31 percent shooting for Seattle and 21 percent for the Mercury. After recording eight points, four rebounds and three assists in the first half, Bird remained on the bench in the second half just as she did on Wednesday. Even without its star point guard, the Storm went on an 8-0 run to take a lead with five minutes to go in the third quarter. From there, Phoenix tied the game twice but never regained the lead. Jewell Loyd assumed much of the point-guard duties, dishing out six assists in the third quarter and finishing with a game-high eight dimes. The Storm was ahead heading into the final period after outscoring Phoenix by 10 in the third. In the fourth quarter, Abby Bishop hit a pair of three-pointers to help Seattle hold on for the victory. Bishop was second behind Clark with 10 points, while rookie guard Blake Dietrick hit a couple of key three-pointers in the second half to record her first career points with the Storm. Forward Mistie Bass led the Mercury with 14 points. The long-awaited debut of No. 1 draft pick Breanna Stewart saw the Connecticut product score 11 points and pull down a team-high eight rebounds in 29 minutes of action. As the starting center, Stewart got going right away, scoring the Storm s first five points to help her team jump out to a 12-2 lead. The deficit was cut to four by the end of the first quarter despite six points apiece from Stewart and point guard Sue Bird. At halftime, the teams were tied at 39 with Phoenix s Penny Taylor pacing all scorers at 13 points. The Mercury then went on a 15-1 run spanning the late part of the third quarter and the early portion of the fourth quarter, seizing control of the game. As planned by head coach Jenny Boucek, Bird didn t play in the second half after helping the Storm to a strong start early on. Boucek chose to watch some of the younger guards show what they can do in a WNBA exhibition. Jewell Loyd, the reigning Rookie of the Year, paced the Storm with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 2-of-3 from the three-point line. Rookie guards Lexi Eaton Rydalch and Blake Dietrick each played about 15 minutes, and Eaton Rydalch contributed eight points to lead the bench. Rookie Courtney Williams and veteran Taylor led Phoenix with 15 points apiece on Wednesday. Taylor scored 13 points in the second quarter alone, helping the Mercury overcome an early deficit. For the Storm, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Quanitra Hollingsworth and Jenna O Hea were not with the team due to overseas commitments. 6 TEAM NOTES STEWART S STORM Breanna Stewart, the first overall 2016 WNBA Draft selection, will make her WNBA debut May 15 in Los Angeles. During a historic, unprecedented career at Connecticut, Stewart won four consecutive national championships and guided the Huskies to a pair of perfect seasons ( and ). She was named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four in all four of her team s title runs and won AP Player of the Year three straight seasons. A four-year starter at Connecticut, Stewart becomes the fifth Husky to be selected with the top pick in the WNBA draft. She finished her college career with a record after leading the Huskies in scoring for the past three seasons. During her senior year, Stewart averaged 19.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.4 blocks per game while shooting 57.9 percent from the field and 42.6 percent from the 3-point line. Stewart is the only player in Division I women s basketball history to record 300 blocks and 300 assists in her career. At the 2013 Final Four, she became the first freshman in 26 years to earn the tournament s Most Outstanding Player award. Stewart has also played for the United States National Team, helping the USA win gold at the 2014 FIBA World Championship. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR RETURNS FOR SOPHOMORE SEASON Following a season where she led all rookies in scoring percentage (10.7), and was the only rookie ranking in the top five in points, rebounds and assists averages, Jewell Loyd, the 2015 WNBA Rookie of the Year, returns to Seattle for her second season. Loyd s rookie season featured a pair of 21-point outbursts Tulsa, Chicago), 17 ten-plus point scoring efforts and she led the team in scoring 10 times. She went 14-of-14 from the free-throw line on 8/30/15 vs. Washington, snapping Lauren Jackson s record of 13-of-13, the most made free-throws without a miss in Storm history. #ROADTORIO On Wednesday, April 27, the USA Women s Basketball Team 12-athlete roster for the 2016 Olympics was named. Sue Bird was named to her fourth Olympic team, going for her fourth Gold medal. Storm rookie Breanna Stewart was also named to the team. This is the first time in Storm history that the active roster had two members on an Olympic roster. Additionally, with the Minnesota Lynx roster including four Olympians (L. Whalen, S. Augustus, S. Fowles, M. Moore), Seattle s Opening Night game will feature half (6) of the 2016 USA Women s Basketball Olympic roster. TAK-ING THE WNBA BY STORM Seattle s Jewell Loyd won Rookie of the Year, but teammate Ramu Tokashiki wasn t too far behind her in terms of statistical dominance compared to other first-year players. Tokashiki was third among rookies in points (8.3 per game), third in blocks (0.9), fourth in minutes (20.6) and second in free throw shooting behind Loyd (86.2 percent). She ranked in the top 20 of the entire WNBA in free throw shooting and overall plus-minus rating. Tokashiki played in 30 games for the Storm, leading the team in scoring four times and posting a team high in blocks 17 times. HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF Seattle owned the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft for the second straight year, the second time a WNBA team has selected first back-toback years. After doing so in 2001 and 2002, the Storm won its first WNBA title within three seasons. Including Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird, seven of the players taken No. 1 overall in the WNBA Draft between 2001 and 2013 have won at least one title. In the NBA, having backto-back top picks has proven to deliver even quicker success: All three times NBA franchises have chosen first overall in consecutive years since 1965, they have made the NBA finals within two seasons (Orlando Magic , Houston Rockets , Cleveland Cavaliers ). ONE OF THE ALL-TIME BEST DISHIN THE ROCK Sue Bird enters her 15th season in the WNBA just 384 assists shy of tying Ticha Penicheiro (2,599) on the WNBA all-time assist rankings. She boasts a 5.2 assist per game career average, sitting in second place on the all-time list. The 2015 season saw Bird fall just.4 assists per game short of leading the league in the category (Courtney Vandersloot, 5.8 apg, 2015). RK. Prior to taking over as head coach in Seattle last year, Boucek held the same role for the now-defunct Sacramento Monarchs from She was an assistant coach in Seattle from and Boucek was around for both of the team s WNBA titles before being promoted to head coach. The Storm made improvements in a few different areas after Boucek took over, namely on the defensive end. Seattle s opponents scored just 7.1 fast break points per game last season, good for second in the WNBA. The Storm also allowed just 30.5 points in the paint on average, the fourth best mark in the league.

7 WRIGHT READY FOR SEATTLE DEBUT Monica Wright may be new to the Storm s active roster, but the veteran guard has already proven that she can be a reliable member of a successful WNBA backcourt. After being selected No. 2 overall in the 2010 WNBA Draft by Minnesota, Wright averaged 7.9 points and 19.8 minutes per game in her six years with the Lynx, which featured a pair of championships (2011, 2013). She finished second in the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year voting in 2013, when the Virginia product averaged nine points per game off the bench. Acquired via trade last summer, Wright is now healthy after missing the final two months of the season due to knee surgery. IT S RAINING IN SEATTLE In 2015, 23.8 percent of the shots Seattle took were three-pointers, one of the highest marks in the WNBA. That percentage was even higher during the previous five seasons, when the Storm was always either first or second in the category. This year could be similar, as 10 of the 12 players on Seattle s roster have proven to be threats from three-point range. Breanna Stewart, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft, shot 42.6 percent from deep as a senior at UConn. Veterans Jenna O Hea (42.4 percent) and Sue Bird (37.9) are among the WNBA s all-time top 10 in three-point percentage. Second-year forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, a college teammate of Stewart, is the NCAA s all-time leader in career three-pointers. Mosqueda-Lewis made 42.3 percent of her threes over the offseason in France after struggling from deep in her first WNBA season. SEATTLE VS. LOS ANGELES...AGAIN This is the fifth consecutive season that Seattle faces Los Angeles in the regular-season opener. The Sparks have won three of the last four openers, but the set of games between the teams in 2015 was dominated by the Storm (4-0). If Seattle wins on Sunday at L.A., it will tie a franchise record for consecutive victories over the Sparks with five. L.A. is also, however, the team that has eliminated the Storm from the playoffs four times, more than any other franchise.
