Alabama Has Dominated Series in Tuscaloosa of Late Though every season and every game is different, Alabama likely hopes its home karma will continue when it comes to this series during the Mark Gottfried coaching era. Auburn defeated Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1999, Gottfried s first season as Alabama s head coach, but it hasn t happened since then. Alabama has muscled its way to the home win in the last seven times Auburn has come to Tuscaloosa to play the Tide dating to the 2000 season. Alabama s largest margin of home victory in the series during that streak came in 2005 when Alabama defeated Auburn All-time in Tuscaloosa, Alabama leads the Auburn series The first time they played one another in Tuscaloosa win in Men Are From State In This Bragging Rights Series Alabama and Auburn are one another s biggest rivals. Nine men on Alabama s roster--and its head coach Mark Gottfried and assistant Philip Pearson who both played for the Tide--are from the State of Alabama. Auburn has five men from the state on its roster, making the series even more fun for bragging rights. Two men who will sit on opposite benches played for the same high school. Alabama freshman guard Justin Tubbs and Auburn sophomore guard Drew Smith both graduated from Trussville s Hewitt-Trussville High School. Tubbs averaged 16.5 points as a senior and 16.9 as a junior. Smith and Tubbs were teammates Tubbs junior season and Smith s senior season (he averaged 10 points that year). Both excelled in the classroom in high school. In fact, Tubbs is an engineering major at Alabama and Smith is pre-med. Series Dates to 1924 Saturday s game will mark the 135th time Alabama and Auburn have played one another in men s basketball. The series dates to 1924, 83 years ago, when the two teams met in the Southern Conference tournament in Atlanta. Alabama won that first game with Hank Crisp coaching Bama to a win against Wilbur Hutsell s Tigers. Alabama would go on to win the first five straight in the series to start its series lead which is The first time the game was played on either team s campus was in 1949 when Auburn hosted the game. Alabama left town with a win. Auburn came calling in Tuscaloosa later that season, and Alabama won yet again, this time by a margin. The two teams play twice, home and away, each regular season as SEC Western Division teams. Following is the series breakdown: Series Record: UA 83 wins, AU 51 wins Streak: In Tuscaloosa: UA leads 40-7 In Auburn: UA leads Neutral Sites: AU leads UA had won the last seven before Auburn snapped the streak with a win on Jan. 23, 2007 in Auburn Gottfried Has Played in & Coached In Series There s no wondering what might be going through his players minds when Alabama plays Auburn for Tide head coach Mark Gottfried. He s both played in and coached in this series. Transferring to Alabama after his freshman season at Oral Roberts, Gottfried lettered three seasons as Alabama s starting guard in During his UA playing career the Tide went 6-4 against the Tigers. Alabama lost both series games Gottfried s first playing season in 1984 then won both in 1985 including a double overtime win in Tuscaloosa. The teams split in 1986 with Alabama winning in Tuscaloosa and Auburn winning in Auburn. Alabama swept the series Gottfried s senior year in 1987, going 3-0 against Auburn, including a SEC tournament game win en route to Alabama s 1987 SEC Tournament and regular season championships. Tide assistant coach Philip Pearson also played for Alabama for five seasons, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and He and his UA teammates were a commanding 11-2 against Auburn. Pearson roster of teammates that helped pad that record included Robert Horry, Antonio McDyess, Latrell Sprewell. In all 10 of his UA teammates went on to the NBA. Gottfried is 7-1 vs. Lebo This is Jeff Lebo s 2nd season at Auburn & his previous head coaching stops have been for two seasons at Chattanooga (2003 and 2004) and four seasons (1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002) at Tennessee Tech. Alabama played Chattanooga in 2004 in Tuscaloosa and won that game Mark Gottfried s Alabama teams played Lebo s Tennessee Tech teams twice, in 1999 and 2000, both games in Tuscaloosa. Alabama won in 1999 and in Alabama won twice against Auburn in 2005, in Auburn 60-55, and in Tuscaloosa. Alabama won both games in 2006, winning at Auburn and in the final home game of 2006 by a score on Senior Night in Tuscaloosa. Lebo s first win against Alabama and Gottfried came in the first of the two 2007 meetings when Auburn beat Alabama in Auburn on January 23, 2007.

5 Crimson Tide Game Notes Alabama in the CollegeRPI Alabama was ranked 26th Thursday in collegerpi.com. Ahead of Alabama from the SEC was Florida at No. 7, Kentucky at No. 8, and Tennessee at No. 14. Davidson Makes Another Move in All-Time Scoring Jermareo Davidson s eight points at Tennessee on Wednesday night brought his Alabama career total to 1,201. That moved him to No. 32 all-time in scoring in a sport that has been fielding teams since He passed Jim Farmer, who was at the game and who scored 1,197 points during his four-year UA career from Davidson could well pass two more former Tide stars as spot No. 31 belongs to Alan House who scored 1,206 points during his UA career and No. 30 belongs to Gary Elliot who scored 1,210 points between Davidson is 10 points away from No. 29 which is held by UAB head coach Mike Davis who played for the Tide from and scored 1,211 points. Hendrix Continues a Sound Sophomore Effort Richard Hendrix was voted Freshman All-SEC in 2006 and his play as a sophomore makes him a candidate to step up into All- SEC status. Hendrix ranks 11th in the league in scoring at 14.8 points per game 27 games into the season and he ranks third in the league in rebounding. He leads the SEC in field goal percentage shooting in all games at.609% ( ). And the 15 field goals he made against Alabama State in December is the most any player in the league has made in any game this season. In league play Hendrix ranks fourth in rebounding at 8.6 rebounds per game and 14th in scoring at 14.3 point per SEC game. He leads the league in field goal shooting in league games as well, shooting.605% (78 of 129). He has had 12 double doubles in points and rebounds this season, five in league play. He has 19 career double doubles going into Saturday s Auburn game. Hendrix scored a career best 34 points against Alabama State on December 19, making 15 of 19 shots from the field. Gottfried s Home Season Records Among Bama s Best With two home games to go, Alabama is 13-1 in Coleman Coliseum this season. The facility opened in Gottfried s Bama teams owns the home record at 17-0 but his team went 17-1 to give him Alabama s top-two most-wins spots. His last two teams in and won 14 games, the second-most single season wins. Seven Alabama teams have won 13 home games in Coleman Coliseum (including this year s team). Gottfried has now coached two of those seven. In nine years as Alabama s head coach, he has produced Bama s top home win numbers six of those seasons. Alabama Team Featured on Upcoming ABC Show The Crimson Tide has been chosen as the team to feature on an upcoming episode of Free Ticket: Inside College Basketball. Alabama is the subject of the March 3 show which will air at 2 p.m. CT. A crew has been in Tuscaloosa since Monday morning following the Tide players and head coach Mark Gottfried through their daily routines which include daily practice sessions, its game at Tennessee at home against Auburn, training room routines, media interviews, community volunteering, class attendance, meals at the campus dining hall and more. Tide Attendance Will Set Record Mark Gottfried s 2006 Alabama team set the home attendance season record with the 189,055, so this season his 2007 team will better that mark. It goes into Saturday s Auburn game with 170,787. The Auburn game is a sellout, so, add that 15,316 in and that will give Alabama 186,103 (just 2,852 short of tying the record---which will obviously break at the Ole Miss game). And Alabama s six sellouts ties the school record for most single season sellouts. Alabama is averaging 12,199 fans so far this season after 14 home games. Last season Alabama averaged 9,648 at home for the season, giving it a jump so far, with two games to improve, of plus 2,551, the second biggest attendance spike in the league from 2006 to Basketball is popular in the SEC this year. All 12 of the schools are in the plus column as they re drawing even more fans in 2007 than they did in Last Time Out Alabama played its third straight SEC Eastern Division team, travelling to Knoxville to play at Tennessee on Wednesday. The Tide fell in overtime to the Vols. Despite the loss, sophomore forward Richard Hendrix collected his 12th double double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. His game also included two blocks. Hendrix and Mykal Riley were the only two Alabama players to reach double digits in scoring as Riley led Alabama with 15 points, making 5 of 8 from the field, 4 of 7 of those from 3-point range, and 1-2 at the free throw line. Riley also had seven rebounds. Davidson led the game with 15 rebounds. Tennessee, which led at halftime, was led by 20 points from SEC scoring leader Chris Lofton. JaJuan Smith had 16 and Wayne Chism 11 to also lead the Vols in a game that went into overtime when Alabama, training by two with 27 seconds remaining, tied it up at when Mikhail Torrance hit a short jumper to send it into overtime. Alabama led by four at with 3:17 remaining in overtime with Hendrix scoring two free throws (he also had two misses on his two trips to the line in those first two overtime minutes) and a dunk. Lofton hit a 3-pointer with 2:58 remaining to get the Vols within one point then Duke Crews tipped in a shot with 1:42 to put Tennessee ahead Alabama would miss two free throws (Justin Tubbs at 1:42) and make two with 11 seconds (Jermareo Davidson) but was outscored in the final seconds by a Ramar Smith jumper with 35 seconds left (67-64) and then a Crews Dunk with five seconds. Unhappy with the play of its veterans, Alabama s newcomers stepped in and got productive minutes in the game. At times there were three true freshmen on the floor (Mikhail Torrance, Justin Tubbs and Demetrius Jemison) and two first year players, JUCO transfer Mykal Riley and redshirt freshman Yamene Coleman. Torrance scored eight points in his 17 minutes, making 4 of 7 from the field. Jemison was 2-4 from the field and 3-4 at the line for his seven points and had eight rebounds in his 20 minutes. Tubbs scored seven points and had three rebounds and three turnovers in his 28 minutes on the floor. He was 3-7 from the field and 1-4 from 3-point range. Coleman played seven minutes and scored five points in that short span, making 2-3 from the field and 1-2 at the line. He had no turnovers (the team had 26--the most in league play this year). The loss snapped a seven game win streak Alabama had against the Vols.

25 The Travel Diary Paradise Jam, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands: A championship trophy is declared on the U.S. Customs form for items picked up on the island...team boards a charter flight from Tuscaloosa, sharing the ride with Xavier and Toledo and experiences giddy joy in knowing flight time from Tuscaloosa will only be 3 1/2 hours to St. Thomas whereas others have already been on flight for at least two hours. UA team leaves island on charter flight envying Toledo who got the giddy nod as the first team that got dropped off, though that flight from St. Thomas to Toledo was 4:20. Bama s actual air flying time on the return, not including arriving at the airport three hours before plane departed St. Thomas, unloading Toledo in Toledo and Xavier in Cincinatti, took six hours Island Time found game one against Middle Tennessee starting almost 13 minutes early. Someone had accidentally unplugged the game clock at the Scorer s Table about 35 minutes before the 2 p.m. AST tip and whoever discovered it put just 20 minutes back on the clock sending the two teams radio network s scurrying and the teams to suddenly speed up their pre-game routine...team took a sky ride to Paradise Point where breathtaking views and a bird show greeted them with bike-riding cockatoos and basketball playing parakeet duo...iguanas became butt of many jokes as the nasty creatures (no apologies for this opinion) SURROUNDED the hotel grounds, sometimes circling the travel party and gathering in giant lizard groups by the dozens, making for cracks like, Hey, does anyone know what kind of meat this is? on the team meal buffet line be immediately answered with, Iguana.... Notre Dame, Indiana: As the team is exiting the Joyce Center following its afternoon shootaround, Jermareo Davidson introduces a snowball to the back of Mark Gottfried s head...among the fans who have travelled to South Bend to cheer the Tide on are UA head softball coach Pat Murphy (2006 SEC Champ and WCWS participant) and members of the nation s No. 1 ranked college golf team, UA golfers Mark Harrell, Stewart Whitt and Ben Moody who have driven 12 hours from Tuscaloosa. Whitt played high school basketball with Richard Hendrix. Harrell lives in a house with John Dill (whose cousin & roommate, Gator Todd, is a UA golfer). Moody is the son of former Tide women s coach and 1994 UA Women s Final Four Coach Rick Moody... Co-head manager Dru Powell monitors his cell phone all afternoon then celebrates when he gets the call that his father, head football coach at LeRoy High School, has just won a state championship... Mobile: Enroute to Mobile, the cinematic experience was Talladega Nights while the return trip, which ended around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, found the team viewing Adam Sandler s version of The Longest Yard. Raleigh, N.C.: Remember the episodes on Gilligan s Island with Wrong Way Feldman, the aviator with no sense of direction? Apparently, Wrong Way is alive and well and driving team bus charters in Raleigh, N.C. Fayetteville, Ark. - Mykal Riley proved his not just a gifted ball player but also a gifted pianist when he played and Richard Hendrix sang for some lovely after dinner music for the staff and managers after the team meal in a meeting room where a piano was set up in a corner. Nashville, Tenn.: Cheering for both Alabama and Vanderbilt was Greg Cage s family whose favorite player on both teams wore the jersey number 20 as Greg and his older brother Dan, who plays for Vanderbilt, both share that number...former UA and NBA player Jim Farmer was there to cheer on his Tide teammate and roommate, Mark Gottfried. Bama brought home the tournament s championship trophy and its MVP, Alonzo Gee (12) Overheard: Tide freshmen Mikhail Torrance, Demetrius Jemison, Justin Tubbs and JUCO transfer Mykal Riley went from tropical island road trip in St. Thomas to winter wonderland in South Bend within two weeks time. Auburn: Cinematic experience on drive to Auburn was Little Man. It was no shock to this reviewer that Little Man was NOT among the Oscar nominees released the following day. Baton Rouge: Remember Wrong Way Feldman, the directionally challenged bus driver from the N.C. State trip (see Raleigh note)? His long lost (and I do mean lost) brother is apparently driving buses in Louisiana. Oxford: As is the routine for all road trips, the team practiced first in Tuscaloosa, boarded bus, drove straight to Tad Pad to shoot and get used to floor for 35 minutes; cinematic experience on bus journey to Oxford was Old School. Gainesville: Flew to Gainesville Tuesday evening after practicing first in Tuscaloosa; returned after game Knoxville: Former Tide players Travis Stinnett & Jim Farmer, both now Tennessee residents, came to cheer the Tide at courtside Jermareo Davidson, in UA lockerroom after Jackson State s Trey Johnson scored 36 on the Tide: It was like Michael Jordan and Ron all over again. (Davidson witnessed Steele guarding Jordan--and Jordan scoring on Steele-- at Jordan s camp this past summer). Happy Birthday, Coach! (a chorus from his team as Mark Gottfried entered the locker room following Alabama s win against Georgia, on his 43rd birthday, when his team came back from 19 down to win on a Ron Steele buzzer beater... I just got Joe Paterno ed. Mark Gottfried, late in the South Carolina game, when a USC player ran out of bounds into Bama s coach who fell forward on the player.
