2 The Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men s Basketball Johnny Dawkins Overall Record: (5th yr.) At Stanford: (5th yr.) In just his first four seasons as a head coach at any level, Johnny Dawkins has made an impact on one of college basketball s most storied programs. Dawkins contributions since arriving on The Farm have come in the form of both team and individual success, most notably guiding the Cardinal to the 2012 Postseason NIT championship. Meanwhile, one year after leading Stanford to a 20-win season for the 20th time in school history, Dawkins oversaw Landry Fields progression from key reserve to all-league performer and eventual NBA Draft pick. Dawkins has also made significant strides off the court, with three straight highly-touted recruiting classes yielding some of the nation s elite players. More impressively, that same young talent is being developed quickly. Last year, Chasson Randle became the fourth player to earn All-Freshman Team status among Pac-12 players during Dawkins tenure following a six-year period in which only two Cardinal rookies were honored. A high standard in the classroom has been established during Dawkins tenure. In , Stanford was represented with a conference-best eight players named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team. For the third season in a row, Stanford had more honorees than any conference school. Stanford s four selections among the first and second teams were the program s most since , when five players made up the top 10 spots. Stanford produced a record last year en route to capturing the Postseason NIT title, the third championship in school history. The Cardinal chalked up its best win total since a 28-8 campaign in Stanford was the Pac-12 s winningest program and tallied a league-best four victories against the RPI s top-50. The Cardinal wrapped up the season at 15-16, fielding a team without a senior for the first time in school history. Stanford finished during the campaign, Dawkins second year at the helm. In , Dawkins directed Stanford to a record and reached the CBI semifinals. In addition to surpassing Robert Burnett as the winningest first-year head coach in school history, Dawkins ranked third in victories among the 21 first-year head coaches in Division I with no prior college head coaching experience. Dawkins, 49, became Stanford s 17th head coach on Apr. 28, 2008, after 11 years as a member of the Duke coaching staff. For the previous nine seasons ( ), Dawkins served as Duke s associate head coach and began his coaching career as an assistant in During Dawkins 11 years at Duke, the Blue Devils won the 2001 NCAA championship, six ACC regular season crowns and seven ACC Tournament titles. Dawkins finished his career in 1986 as the school s all-time leading scorer. Dawkins was a two-time first team All-ACC performer in 1985 and 1986 as well as the school s first consensus two-time, first team All- American. As a senior, he was tabbed ACC Tournament MVP while also becoming the first Naismith Player of the Year recipient in school history. About The 2013 Postseason NIT The 76th edition of the Postseason NIT boasts a strong 32-team field. Included in the mix are 21 teams with at least 20 wins and 10 automatic qualifiers who won their regularseason conference title. The field also includes two other Pac-12 teams, with No. 3 seed Arizona State joining No. 6 seed Washington. The first three rounds are played at campus sites across the country, with the semifinals and championship game played at Madison Square Garden in New York on April 2-4. Stanford Against The 2013 Postseason Fields Of the 32 teams selected for the NIT, Stanford faced three teams and compiled an 2-2 record (1-1 vs. Arizona State; 1-0 vs. Denver; 0-1 vs. Washington). Of the 68 teams selected for the NCAA Tournament, Stanford faced nine teams and notched a 3-10 record (2-0 vs. California; 1-1 vs. Oregon; 0-1 vs. Arizona; 0-1 vs. Belmont; 0-1 vs. Minnesota; 0-1 vs. Missouri; 0-1 vs. NC State; 0-2 vs. Colorado, 0-2 vs. UCLA). Of the 16 teams selected for the CBI, Stanford did not play any of the participating teams. Of the 32 teams selected for the CIT, Stanford faced one team (1-0 vs. Northern Iowa). Scouting Alabama One of four No. 1 seeds in this year s NIT draw, Alabama (22-12, 12-6 SEC) advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. The Crimson Tide owns a 15-3 home record. Alabama is making its 12th appearance in the Postseason NIT, notching a record during that stretch. The Crimson Tide earned a runner-up finish in The Crimson Tide, which was picked to finish fourth in the SEC preseason media poll, opened the year with six straight victories before losing six of its next eight games. Alabama is averaging 63.1 points and 32.7 rebounds per game while shooting 43.0 percent overall. The Crimson Tide s defense allows only 58.5 points per game. Be sure to watch: Trevor Relaford (15.2 ppg, 48.3 percent FG, 42.3 percent 3FG, 82.4 percent free throws), Trevor Lacey (11.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 106 assists), Rodney Cooper (10.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg), Nick Jacobs (7.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 37 blocks). Stanford All-Time Against Alabama Stanford is winless in two attempts. The teams last matched up in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 20, 2004, with the Crimson Tide pulling a upset. As a No. 8 seed, Alabama shocked No. 1 Stanford, which entered the game at 30-1 overall. Stanford All-Time In The Postseason Stanford is all-time in 24 postseason appearances overall, including a 13-4 record in seven NIT appearances. The Cardinal has claimed two NIT championships, winning in 1991 and Stanford owns a record in 16 NCAA Tournament appearances and captured the 1942 title. Stanford posted a 2-1 mark in its only season of CBI competition. Searching For Rare NIT Title Repeat Stanford will attempt to capture its second straight Postseason NIT title, after defeating Minnesota in last year s championship game. The only other programs to claim backto-back NIT championships are St. John s (1943, 1944) and South Carolina (2005, 2006). Aaron Bright was named the tournament s Most Outstanding Player. Providing a spark off the bench in all five games, Bright averaged a team-best 16.8 points while shooting 64.1 percent overall, 66.7 percent from long distance and 88.0 percent from the foul line. Stanford clicked offensively during the NIT run, averaging 80.2 points per game while shooting 48.1 percent overall and 46.1 percent from long distance. Opponents averaged 64.8 points per game and connected on just 38.0 percent from the field. Perhaps most impressive, Stanford s defense generated 9.8 steals per game and forced 18.4 turnovers NIT CHAMPIONS: A CLOSER LOOK AT STANFORD S RUN Date Score Site Round March 13, 2012 Stanford 76, Cleveland State 65 Stanford, CA First March 19, 2012 Stanford 92, Illinois State 88 (OT) Stanford, CA Second March 21, 2012 Stanford 84, Nevada 56 Stanford, CA Quarterfinals March 27, 2012 Stanford 74, Massachusetts 64 New York, NY Semifinals March 29, 2012 Stanford 75, Minnesota 51 New York, NY Championship Season Snapshot Projected to finish fourth in the Pac-12 preseason poll, Stanford tied for sixth at 9-9. Austin Game Dwight Powell registered his 10th double-double of the year, finishing with 12 points and 15 rebounds to lead Stanford past Stephen F. Austin in the opening round of the NIT. Despite not scoring over the final 3:52, Stanford held on for the victory when Desmond Haymon s last-second jumper fell short. Stanford held an 18-2 edge in bench points, thanks mainly to Gabriel Harris (nine points, three rebounds, 18 minutes) and Robbie Lemons (six points, three boards, 16 minutes). The last time Stanford won a game while scoring under 60 points was Feb. 12, 2012, when the Cardinal topped USC Aaron Bright added 11 points (4-11 FG, 3-6 3FG). Dating back to last year, Bright has reached double-figure scoring in nine of his last 10 games during the month of March. Bright has scored in double digits 11 times this year. Stanford shot 40.4 percent overall but was 7-16 from three-point territory, with four different players knocking down at least one triple. The Cardinal was also 9-13 from the foul line. Stanford s biggest lead in the second half was seven points at while Stephen F. Austin held an eight-point advantage midway through the first half. Stephen F. Austin, which shot 43.1 percent overall, was just 3-11 from long distance. The Lumberjacks, led by Taylor Smith s 18 points, were outrebounded Stanford won for only the third time this year when trailing at halftime. The Cardinal has now made at least one three-pointer in 388 consecutive games, dating back to an 0-6 performance against Purdue in the John Wooden Tradition on Nov. 24, NIT Run Will Require Different Path This Year If Stanford is to return to New York this year, the journey will be much different than last season. As the No. 4 seed, the Cardinal must win at No. 1 seed Alabama on Saturday and then defeat either No. 2 seed Maryland or No. 3 seed Denver on the road next week. In 2012, Stanford beat Cleveland State in the opening round but received an immediate boost when top-seeded Arizona and second-seeded Mississippi were upset in their openers. The Cardinal then parlayed its sudden home-court edge into wins over Illinois State (92-88 OT) and Nevada (84-56). Cardinal Has Performed Well In March Stanford is now 16-9 in games played during the month of March under head coach Johnny Dawkins. Last year, the Cardinal has won a school-record seven games in March, including its final five contests en route to capturing the 2012 NIT championship. Powell, Huestis Highlight Stanford s All-Pac-12 Picks Dwight Powell was named an All-Pac-12 First Team selection and recognized as the conference s Most Improved Player of the Year, highlighting Stanford s honorees among this year s All-Pac-12 award winners. Meanwhile, Josh Huestis earned a spot on the five-member All-Defensive Team, one year after receiving Honorable Mention status in the same category. Powell, who was named to the All-Freshman Team two years ago, is the first Stanford player named to the 10- member First Team since Jeremy Green in Powell also becomes the first Cardinal to earn the Pac-12 s Most Improved Player of the Year, since the inception of the award four years ago. Double-Double Machines... Dwight Powell and Josh Huestis are one of five duos nationally to have notched at least nine double-doubles apiece. Prior to a Feb. 27 loss to Colorado, Stanford had received at least one double-double from either Powell or Huestis in eight straight games. Austin, representing the 12th time this year the Cardinal has accomplished the feat. Dwight Powell has been the most consistent, reaching double-digit scoring in 20 consecutive games while Chasson Randle has accomplished the feat in 16 of his last 19 overall. Of Stanford s 14 eligible players, 11 have scored in double figures at least once this season.

However, it s a different story from beyond the arc. The Cardinal ranks fourth overall in three-point field goal percentage at 36.0 percent while its 41.1 percent long distance mark in Pac-12 games led the league. Powell Continues To Pace The Cardinal Fully healthy and contributing consistently, Dwight Powell is showcasing the type of dynamic all-around game many expected when he first arrived on The Farm. Powell has notched 10 double-doubles overall, including a next level 17-point, 17-rebound effort against USC on Feb. 14. In addition to averaging a team-best 15.3 points and ranking second with 8.4 rebounds, Powell is shooting 47.2 percent overall and 79.6 percent from the foul line. Huestis has registered 118 career blocks, good for sixth all-time in school history. Since that contest, he has been terrific. For the season, Randle ranks second on the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) and assists (87), first in steals (38) while excelling from the foul line (91-116, 78.4 percent). Despite the offensive struggles, Bright is getting his teammates involved while protecting the basketball. Over the last 10 games, Bright has totaled 44 assists and only 15 turnovers (an assist/turnover ratio of 2.9). Consider this: Bright has committed only three turnovers during his last 156 minutes on the court, spanning five games. Cardinal Exceptional From The Charity Stripe Stanford is converting at a 74.1 percent clip that ranks 37th in the country. Only once in the last six years has Stanford finished the season making at least 70.0 percent or better, and that came in when the Cardinal was slightly over at 70.5 percent. Aaron Bright, who has been Stanford s most consistent performer at 83.1 percent (54-65), made 29 consecutive freebies before missing the second of two attempts against Oregon on Jan. 30. Gage Provides Boost Off The Bench John Gage leads the Pac-12 in three-point shooting at 45.7 percent (43-94). Gage s numbers in conference games are equally impressive, connecting at a league-best 49.1 percent (27-55). STANFORD BASKETBALL IN THE NEWS Excerpts from recent feature stories, game recaps, tweets, columns and blog posts spotlighting Stanford basketball can be found within this section. Stanford Edges Stephen F. Austin In NIT by Tom FitzGerald, San Francisco Chronicle March 20, 2013 Counting the five games it won in the NIT last year, Stanford is on a six-game roll in this event. But the defending tournament champion Cardinal had to sweat out the final seconds to preserve a victory over undersized but defensively tough Stephen F. Austin State at home Tuesday night. Although the game was on national TV (ESPN2), the Stanford campus was not exactly gripped by NIT fever. The paid crowd was listed at just 1,050, partly because the students were in the midst of finals week. The upper sections of Maples Pavilion were closed off for the first time in recent memory. In a game that stayed tight to the end, Dwight Powell had 12 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Cardinal (19-14), while Aaron Bright added 11 points. A three-pointer by Desmond Haymon cut Stanford s lead to with 2:18 left. But in the final minute a drive by Haymon was thwarted. The Lumberjacks had one more chance, but Haymon s lastsecond jumper went off the front of the rim. During the season we would have lost a game like that, Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said. To win that game says a lot about our guys. We had to dig in to get the last stop. Taylor Smith, a rugged 6-foot-6 post player, led Stephen F. Austin (27-5) with 18 points. He showed why he was the Southland Conference player of the year with his toughness in the paint. Not only is he a good defender, but he s a good shot-blocker and rebounder, Dawkins said. You think you can get a shot off because he s only 6-6, but his arms are so long and he s so athletic that he changes your shot around the paint. He helped force Powell into a 3-for-13 shooting night, although he did have a spectacular two-hand dunk on a pass from Gabriel Harris. I didn t come with the appropriate focus tonight, Powell said. Missed some easy shots. I just wasn t in a good offensive groove, partly because of my own fault and partly because they re a great defensive team. Cardinal Gets A Chance To Defend Its NIT Title by Rick Eymer, Palo Alto Daily News March 18, 2013 The NIT has the distinction of featuring two national champions in its tournament this season. Stanford and Kentucky likely figured they would share that common denominator in the NCAA bracket but as coach Johnny Dawkins said, it shows how much parity has flooded college basketball. It s a pretty good field when you look at all the storied programs, Dawkins said. It shows you where college basketball is, and the parity. There are a lot of good teams. Kentucky is not the only surprise team in the NIT. Alabama, Maryland, Virginia, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee, BYU and Ohio were also expected to be headed for the NCAA tournament. A rash of conference tournament upsets set the stage for, perhaps, the strongest NIT field ever. In addition to the above, there are 10 regular-season conference champions in the NIT field, including Stephen F. Austin, which lost to Northwestern State, 68-66, in Southland Conference tournament finals to miss out on the automatic bid. For Stanford, it means a chance to become the third team in NIT to win two consecutive titles. I get to play with Gabe some more and a chance to play with people I love to play basketball with, guard Aaron Bright said. We re in it to win it. We re thankful for the opportunity to keep playing. Bright has blossomed recently, playing the way that made him last year s NIT Most Outstanding Player. Bright, who scored 27 points in last week s loss to Arizona State, has one turnover over his last 125 minutes, a span of four games. He has 13 assists over that stretch. Gabe Harris, whom Bright referenced, is the Cardinal lone senior. He s also a reason why guys like Bright and Andy Brown feel good about playing again. We want to send Gabe out with as many games as we can, said Brown, who will be returning to school next year although he ll be finished with his undergraduate work. Obviously we didn t have the kind of season we wanted but we re still excited to be playing.
