Tip-off is slated for noon at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. The game will be broadcast live over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley (play-by-play), Charlie Woollum and Bill McDonald on the call. The broadcast can also be heard live over the Internet by following the link on the men s basketball schedule page. The game can be followed via live stats over the Web as well with GameTracker. STORY LINES - W&M will open the season on the road for the second straight year after falling at Kansas State, 70-60, last season. - The Georgetown game will be the start of the tough beginning stretch for the Tribe as six of its first seven games will come on the road, including back-to-back contests against top-25 teams. - The game will be the first between the two schools since the season. - W&M will meet a NCAA Final Four participant from the previous season for the second straight year and the 19th time overall. 2 AT GEORGETOWN NOV. 10, 2007 WASHINGTON, D.C. 12 PM 2 SCOUTING GEORGETOWN Georgetown enters the season with high expectations and a lofty national ranking after garnering the program s fifth trip to the NCAA Final Four last season. The Hoyas are currently ranked No. 5 in both the Associate Press s and ESPN/ USA Today Top 25s. GU fi nished last season at 30-7, while winning the BIG EAST Regular and Tournament Championships. The Hoyas were named the preseason co-favorite to win the BIG EAST Championship along with Louisville. The Hoyas return four starters and eight letterwinners from a season ago, highlighted by preseason AP All-American Roy Hibbert. The 7-2 center was a First-Team All-BIG EAST and NABC District IV choice last season and spent the summer playing for the Team USA at the Pan-American Games. He is the Hoyas top returning scorer at 12.9 points per game to go along with 6.9 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per contest. Hibbert is the Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year. Fellow returning starters for the Hoyas include senior Jonathan Wallace, junior Jessie Sapp and sophomore DaJuan Summers. Wallace started all 37 games last season for GU, ranking third on the team in points per game at He also was Georgetown s top 3-point threat, knocking 73 treys and shooting 49 percent from deep. He is a Preseason First-Team All-BIG EAST choice after earning honorable mention accolades last season. Sapp averaged 9.1 points per game and a team-high 3.5 assists, while Summers was an All-BIG EAST Rookie Team choice, averaging 9.2 points per game. The Hoyas added a pair of McDonald s All-Americans in its incoming freshman crop in Austin Freeman and Chris Wright. Freeman averaged 23.1 points per game as a senior at DeMatha and was a Parade All-American, while Wright, who will miss the early part of the season due to a broken foot, was his high school s all-time leading scorer. The Hoyas are coached by John Thompson III, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the Georgetown program. Over his fi rst three seasons with GU, the Hoyas are IN THE SERIES Georgetown leads the all-time series with the Tribe at 5-4, but the two squads have not met since the season. The Hoyas also hold a 4-2 advantage in Washington, D.C. He lettered four seasons and was a three-year starter at the College for head coaches Chuck Swenson and Charlie Woollum (currently part of the Tribe Radio Network). Cox concluded his career with 670 points (6.1 ppg), 216 rebounds, 336 assists and a point fi eld goal percentage (139-of-395) after playing from He remains ranked among school leaders in several statistical categories including career assists (eighth, 336), career assist average (ninth, 3.08 apg.), career 3-point fi eld goal percentage (ninth,.352) and career 3-point fi eld goals made (seventh, 137). ANDREWS EXHIBITION RECAP The Tribe used a balanced attack and some hot shooting from the field to breeze past St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 85-51, in its exhibition opener. Four different Tribe players scored in double fi gures, while the College connected on 58.2 percent from the fl oor and 50 percent from 3-point range in the victory. Senior co-captain Laimis Kisielius and junior forward Alex Smith led the way for the Tribe with 15 points apiece, while sophomore guard David Schneider added 14. Smith was 6-of-7 from the fi eld on the evening and led W&M with six rebounds. Schneider tallied team-high honors with three 3-point fi eld goals, eight assists and fi ve steals. Kisielius also turned in a solid fl oor game dishing out fi ve assists and tallying a pair of steals. With the game tied at 23, W&M used a 23-6 run over the fi nal 8:45 of the fi rst half to take a double-digit advantage into the locker room. W&M took a lead into the intermission after shooting over 60 percent from both the fi eld (60.7 percent at 17-of-28) and 3-point range (60 percent at 9-of-15) in the opening 20 minutes. The College never looked back opening up a lead as large as 37 in the second half. W&M knocked down 11 3-point fi eld goals and dished out 20 assists, while tallying 13 team steals. After SAPC shot 52.4 percent from the fl oor in the fi rst half, W&M stepped up the defensive pressure holding the Knights to just 36 percent in the second half. Sophomore Danny Sumner fi nished with 13 points in the victory for the College, connecting on a pair of threes and pulling down four rebounds. Senior Kyle Carrabine was perfect on a the night hitting all four of his attempts from the fl oor, both his 3-point fi eld goals and two free throws to fi nished with 12 points and four rebounds. TOUGH START W&M will fi nd the opening portion of its schedule a little diffi cult. Not only does the Tribe open with back-to-back preseason top-25 teams, but six of its fi rst seven games will come on the road. The College will open the regular season at No. 5/5 (AP/ESPN USAToday) Georgetown on Saturday, Nov. 10, before traveling to its second straight top-25 foe in No. 21/24 N.C. State on Thursday, Nov. 15. W&M will face Wagner in Staten Island on Nov. 20, before it opens the home portion of its slate on Sunday, Nov. 25, against Houston Baptist. The Tribe will then travel to Richmond on Nov. 28, VCU on Dec. 5 and North Florida on Dec. 7, before a two-week break for fi nal exams at the College. The six road games in the opening seven contests start is the toughest stretch since the season. During that campaign, the College played nine of its fi rst 10 games away from Williamsburg. Over those nine games, seven were road games and another two were played at neutral sites as part of tournaments. TOUGH START PART TWO With the Tribe s back-to-back games to open the year against No. 5/5 Georgetown and No. 21/24 N.C. State, it will mark the sixth time in school history that the Tribe will play back-to-back games against nationally ranked opponents. It will be the fi rst time in over 20 years as the College last played back-to-back top-25 teams during the season. During that campaign, the College traveled to No. 5 Maryland on Jan. 7 and No. 12 Wake Forest on Jan. 11. W&M also played back-to-back ranked foes during the , , and seasons. BALANCED ATTACK The Tribe placed four players in doubles fi gures during its exhibition victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian on Nov. 6. Senior Laimis Kisielius and junior Alex Smith led the way with 15 points apiece, while sophomore David Schneider added 14, sophomore Danny Summer tallied 13 and senior Kyle Carrabine chipped in 12. Last season, W&M only placed four players in doubles fi gures on fi ve occasions, racking up a 3-2 mark. SHOOTING EXHIBITION W&M used its hot hand to tally a 34-point victory over St. Andrews in the exhibition opener. The Tribe broke open a close game over the fi nal nine minutes of the opening half with its explosive shooting. The College knocked on 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the fi eld and 60 percent (9-of-15) from 3-point range in the fi rst half. W&M cooled off a bit in the second 20 minutes, but still managed to shoot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) in the second half to post a 58.2 percent (32-of-55) clip for the game. 4 AT GEORGETOWN NOV. 10, 2007 WASHINGTON, D.C. 12 PM CHASING 400 W&M head coach Tony Shaver has spent 21 seasons patrolling the sidelines in college basketball. Prior to his stint at W&M, Shaver spent 17 seasons as the head man at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. Shaver currently has 396 career wins between W&M and Hampden-Sydney, needing only four wins to join the 400-win club. 1,000 WITHIN REACH Both Tribe seniors Laimis Kisielius and Nathan Mann are within reach of the 1,000- point club. The duo could become the 29th and 30th members of the exclusive club in the 103-year history of Tribe basketball. Kisielius enters the season at 771 career points, needing only 229, while Mann has 718 career points and needs 282. Those numbers equate to Kisielius needing to average 7.9 points per game over the regular season to reach 1,000 points and Mann needing a 9.7 points per contest scoring average. If the Tribe duo reaches the milestone this season, they would become only the third pair in history to score their 1,000th career points in the same season. Matt Courage and John Lowenhaupt both scored their 1,000th career points in 1997, while Matt Verkey and Carl Parker reached the mark in Kisielius and Mann would be the first to do it in the same season after spending their entire careers together at the College. Two other duos, Bev Vaughan and Jeff Cohen ( ) as well as Kevin Richardson and Keith Cieplicki ( ), played their entire careers together, but scored their 1,000th career points in seperate seasons. MANN ON THE MARK Senior guard Nathan Mann enters his senior season as one of the Tribe all-time greatest 3-point shooters. He ranks among the top-10 in W&M history in career 3-pointers made, attempted, made per game and percentage. He currently sits fi fth on the W&M career 3-point field goals made list, while ranking fourth in career 3-point fi eld goals attempted. He has connected on 142-of-423 from deep for a percentage of 34.5 over his career. That number ranks 10th on the Tribe career 3-point field goal percentage list. On average, Mann has knocked down 1.63 treys per game during his first three seasons with the College, which ranks seventh in the program s annals. SEASON OPENERS W&M is (.529) all-time in the fi rst game of the season and has won six of its last 10 season-opening games. The Tribe is 3-1 in season openers under head coach Tony Shaver, defeating Liberty, 91-64, in his fi rst game on Nov. 23, 2003, beating Hartford, 84-71, on Nov. 19, 2004 and downing Maine, on Nov. 18, Last season, the Tribe fell at Kansas State, 70-60, on Nov. 11. The College returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from last year s milestone campaign. Senior co-captains Laimis Kieslius and Nathan Mann are three-year returning starters, while nine different players on the W&M roster have earned starting nods at some point in their College career. It total, the Tribe s returning roster has 493 career games played and 192 career starts. Six returning players have played in nearly 50 games for the College over their careers, while seven return after averaging 10-plus minutes per game last season. The Hoyas advanced to their fifth Final Four last season, before falling in the semifi nals to Ohio State. Last season, the Tribe defeated 2006 Final Four participant George Mason, 67-63, on Jan.3, marking the fi fth time in school history that the College defeated a Final Four participant from the previous season. The Tribe also accomplished the feat with wins over N.C. State during the season, West Virginia during the season, North Carolina during the season and Virginia during the campaign. The victory for the version of the Tribe was the fi rst to pull the trick on the road. The previous four wins all came in contests considered home games, while W&M downed the Patriots in Fairfax, Va. The win over George Mason was also the fi rst over a Final Four participant since the NCAA Tournament fi eld expanded to 64. The 1984 NCAA Tournament was the fi nal event with a 48-team fi eld. The Tribe s victories over N.C. State in 1951 and West Virginia in 1960 were both played in Norfolk, Va., but both were considered home games. The College played Duke on four occasions ( , , , and ) and North Carolina on three occasions ( , and ) following Final Four trips for the schools. W&M also played West Virginia on three occasions during the season after the Mountaineers went to the 1959 Final Four. The Tribe has battled Jacksonville in , Providence in and Maryland in following Final Four trips for those programs. SMITH GOES INTERNATIONAL WITH PANAMA Junior forward Alex Smith spent the summer competing with the Panamanian Senior National Team. He played with the squad at the FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., Aug. 22-Sept. 2 as well as at the Pan-American Games, June 29-July 1. At the FIBA Americas Championship, Smith averaged 2.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, coming off the Panamanian bench. In a loss to Puerto Rico, Smith notched his best statistical game with fi ve points and three rebounds in 20 minutes of action. He also added three points, two rebounds and a steal in Panama s lone victory of the championship against Mexico on Aug. 24. At the Pan-American Games, Smith played in four games, including one start, and averaged 4.3 points and 1.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 75 percent from the fl oor. He turned in his best game of the tournament against the U.S. in the fifth-place game, scoring seven points and pulling down two rebounds. Georgetown s Roy Hibbertt was a member of that U.S. Team at the Pan-American Games. Smith also competed in a third tournament with Panama over the summer in Chile. He averaged 7.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 26.3 minutes of action over the three-game Chile Top 4 Tournament. TRIBE ON TV W&M will once again have a number of games televised as part of the Colonial Athletic Association s (CAA) television package for the season. W&M will have four games broadcast as part of the league s most comprehensive TV package in the 23-year history of the conference. The Tribe will have a trio of games broadcast on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and a game televised on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. Three of the Tribe s four TV games will be on the road and one will come in the friendly confi nes of Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg. The Tribe s contest at Old Dominion on Jan. 5, slated for an 8 p.m. tipoff, will be televised on CSN-MA. The network will also broadcast both W&M games against Towson on Jan. 19 and Feb. 16. 6 AT GEORGETOWN NOV. 10, 2007 WASHINGTON, D.C. 12 PM 6 the Feb. 16 match up in Towson, Md., will start at 2 p.m. The Tribe s fi nal regular season road contest at George Mason on Feb. 27 will also be a part of the television package. MASN will show the game, which is set to begin at 9 p.m. The 80-game CAA men s basketball composite broadcast slate features 38 appearances on the various ESPN platforms, including four regular-season games and the CAA Championship on ESPN/ESPN2, 14 games on ESPNU and six syndicated games on ESPN Regional Television. The largest-ever Comcast syndicated package features more than 30 games syndicated on the Comcast family of Networks (Comcast SportsNets, SportsNet New York, CSS, CN8), allowing consistent exposure in many of the nation s largest media markets. O REILLY ESPNU BRACKETBUSTERS For the second straight season, the Tribe will take part in O Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters. All 12 CAA teams will compete in the sixth-annual event. After serving as a road team in 2007, the Tribe will host a game during the 2008 two-day event, Feb BracketBusters will feature 14 nationally televised contests on ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic and ESPN360.com. A pool of 100 teams from 16 different conferences will participate in the 2008 BracketBusters. The fi eld includes teams with 74 appearances in the last five NCAA Tournaments, including a team in the Final Four and seven Sweet Sixteen squads. This year s coverage will feature the addition of a game on ESPN Classic. For the third straight year, ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, will televise fi ve BracketBusters games while ESPN360.com, ESPN s customized broadband service, will offer two. ESPN2 will televise six contests. ESPN360.com will also simulcast ESPN2 s six telecasts. The Bracket- Busters matchups will be announced Feb. 4, while game time and network assignments will be announced Feb. 11. The 100-team fi eld will feature 12 teams from the CAA and the Mid-American Conference; 11 from the Ohio Valley Conference; 10 from the Missouri Valley, Horizon League and Metro Atlantic Athletic; nine from the Western Athletic Conference and Big West; four from the America East and Southern; two from the Patriot, Big Sky and Big South; one from the West Coast, Summit League and Atlantic Sun. EXPERIENCE BEYOND HIS YEARS Sophomore David Schneider faced a gauntlet of experienced point guards during his rookie season with the Tribe in The Phoenix, Ariz., native demonstrated maturity beyond his years during his fi rst season in the Green and Gold, helping the College to its best season in nearly a decade. Schneider had the fewest turnovers of any primary point guard in the CAA. He only turned the ball over 48 times while averaging over 30 minutes per game. Schneider averaged only one turnover per 16:22 minutes played. Schneider ranked 11th in the CAA in assists to turnover ratio. That number ranked second among the league s rookies. On 12 occasions, Schneider has turned the ball over one or few times, while dishing out five or more assists on fi ve occasions. He led the Tribe in assists per game at 2.7. With its win over Drexel on Feb. 14, the Tribe became only the fi fth team in W&M men s basketball history to win 15 games against Division I opponents. It marked the highest rated opponent the Tribe had defeated since downing Richmond in 2001 when the Spiders were No. 43 in the RPI. GUARDS CRASHING THE BOARDS The W&M guards were a signifi cant reason for the Tribe s success in the rebounding department last season. The College has outrebounded 16 opponents. On 25 occasions and in 20 of the Tribe s 30 games this season, a W&M guard led the Tribe in rebounding. In fact, all three of the College s starting guards averaged over 3.4 rebounds per contest. In total, the Tribe received over 15 rebounds a game from the guard position. MAKING SOME HISTORY The season provided some memorable moments for the W&M men s basketball program. Here is a look at some of the winning accomplishments from last season: - The College tallied its most victories in a season since the campaign when it won its 15th game of the year vs. Drexel on Feb W&M s victory over Drexel on Feb. 14 marked the fi rst time that the Tribe has defeated the Dragons since Drexel joined the CAA in On Feb. 10, W&M recorded its first win in Trask Coliseum since the season, defeating UNCW, The Tribe was one of only 21 teams in school history to win 15 or more games (Division I or other) in a season and one of only fi ve teams to win 15 or more Division I games. - W&M jumped out to a 10-4 start to the season, the best start for the College since going 11-3 during the season. - It marked the 12th occasion in W&M basketball history that the Tribe started the season 10-4 or better. The team was only the fi fth team since 1950 to start the season 10-4 or better. - The College won seven straight contests from Dec. 8-Jan. 8. It marked only the 17th winning streak of seven or more games in W&M history. The streak also was only the sixth of seven or more games since the campaign. - The team became only the fourth team to win seven or more in a row as the and team both did it twice. - On Jan. 3, the Tribe tallied its fi rst win in Fairfax, Va., over George Mason, 67-63, since the season. The Tribe also snapped George Mason s 14-game home conference winning streak that span nearly two years. - W&M jumped out to only its fourth 3-1 start in the school s 22 years in the CAA. 13 TONYSHAVER Head Coach Fifth at W&M In four seasons at W&M, head coach Tony Shaver has led a turnaround of Tribe basketball. During season, W&M enjoyed a breakout season, winning 15 Division I games for only the fi fth time in school history. Shaver, though, believes 15 wins is only a rung on the ladder to becoming a perennial Colonial Athletic Association contender. Shaver has spent 21 seasons of coaching at the collegiate level and enters his 32nd season as a head coach. I do not want anyone to limit the vision of our program, Shaver said. I am used to winning as a coach, and last season was a great step towards where I know this program can end up. As a staff, we expect big things not only from our players, but from our program as a whole. Shaver earned CollegeInsider.com Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Tribe to a record. It marked just the second time in the last 20 years W&M had won 15 games. Shaver also led his troops to eight wins during the tough CAA portion; only the third time in the 22-year history of the league the Tribe has accomplished that feat. Another telling stat of the progression of the program was the four CAA road victories, highlighted by a win over 2006 Final Four participant George Mason. In Shaver s fi rst four seasons, W&M had won only three road affairs. The season brought about a change in styles for the 31st W&M head coach. After spending much of his career coaching an up-tempo offense, featuring a trapping defense, Shaver switched over to a more perimeter-oriented attack last season. The Tribe offensive scheme now spreads the fl oor and relies on spacing, effective perimeter shooting and players reading and reacting to teammates cuts and motion. Defensively, W&M employs a plethora of defensive systems to throw off opposing offenses. The new style led to the Tribe ranking among the top 50 in the country in 3-point fi eld goal defense as well as holding its opponents to 64.2 points per game, the best mark since the season. The College also established school records for 3-point fi eld goals made and 3-point fi eld goals attempted. The success of the new approach was never more evident than in the Tribe s Feb. 14 victory over eventual National Invitational Tournament participant Drexel, 60-47, in Williamsburg. It was the lowest point production for Drexel in four seasons, and marked the highest ranked team, in terms of RPI, that W&M had defeated since During the season, W&M started 4-1, marking the best start for the Tribe team since opening the campaign with a 6-1 record. The 4-1 start for the squad though was the first time in school history that the Tribe has opened a year with at least four wins in its first fi ve games against current Division I opponents. Included in those four victories was a win at Hampton, which went on to make the NCAA Tournament. In November 2005, Shaver was inducted into the Episcopal High School Hall of Fame. He led EHS for 10 seasons from Shaver has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at both of his head coaching stops prior to taking over the reigns at W&M. There have been individual successes as well for the Green and Gold under Shaver s reign. On four occasions, a W&M player has been named All-CAA under Shaver, while another four have been named to the CAA All-Rookie Team graduate Adam Hess, currently playing professionally in France, became the fi rst player in school history to lead the CAA in scoring. An outstanding student and athlete, Hess was named the CAA Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year (for all sports) and was a First-Team Academic All- American and all-conference selection as a senior. W&M players have also enjoyed success in the classroom under Shaver, as on seven occasions a Tribe player has been named to the CAA All- Academic team over the last four seasons, including a programhigh three in Shaver was named the head coach of the Tribe on May 2, He came to W&M after coaching 17 seasons at Hampden- Sydney, compiling a record of (.747). He turned the Tigers into a Division III national powerhouse, leading the men s basketball team to eight Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles, win seasons and 11 NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The winningest basketball coach in the program s history, he was named the ODAC and South Region Coach of the Year in 1995, 1999 and 2000, and was picked as the Virginia Sports Information Directors Division II-III Coach of the Year in 1997, 1999 and In 2003, Shaver took the Tigers to the NCAA Division III Final Four, as his team fi nished with a record of In 1999, Shaver led H-SC to the national championship game, where the Tigers lost by one point in double-overtime to Wisconsin-Platteville. The team fi nished 29-3, setting a school record for most wins in a season. Prior to taking over at Hampden-Sydney for the campaign, Shaver spent 10 years as the head boys basketball coach at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He was named the Virginia State Private School Coach of the Year in 1986, and was twice picked as the Alexandria Coach of the Year, while winning 73 percent of his games. A 1976 graduate of North Carolina, Shaver was a guard on the Tar Heel men s basketball team from under head coach Dean Smith. Originally a walk-on, he earned a scholarship his rookie season, when he was awarded the prestigious Butch Bennett Award, presented to the freshman who exemplifi es determination, sportsmanship and sacrifi ce for the team. Shaver was voted the honoree by his teammates. A native of High Point, North Carolina, Shaver and his wife, Ann, are the parents of three sons: Christopher (26), Austin (23) and Jackson (16). Christopher is currently pitching with the Chicago Cubs organization after a former standout career with the Tribe s baseball team. Austin is working toward a graduate degree in sports leadership at VCU, while working as a graduate assistant with the Ram basketball program.
