Non-Conference Game WARDLE RETURNS TO MARQUETTE FOR ROAD TEST After getting a victory in his head coaching debut, Brian Wardle will return to Milwaukee to play against the Marquette program for which he once starred. Wardle ended his playing days as the third-leading scorer in Marquette history and now ranks seventh on the school s scoring list. As he returns as a head coach, it is defense that Wardle is stressing to his Green Bay team looking to move to 2-0. In his debut on Saturday, the Phoenix allowed just 36 points and held Minnesota Duluth to just 23.7 percent shooting in a victory. The 36 points were the fewest scored by a Green Bay opponent since Dec. 8, Senior Rahmon Fletcher, a preseason All-Horizon League selection, scored 16 points on just nine shots against the Bulldogs while Milwaukee natives Bryquis Perine and Jarvis Williams added 11 and 10, respectively. The competition will stiffen for the Phoenix in Milwaukee against a Marquette team that has won its opening two games by an average of 25 points per game. Senior Jimmy Butler is averaging 14.5 points per game to lead the Golden Eagles, who used a 24-0 run to rally past Bucknell for a win on Sunday. Wednesday s meeting will be the 10th all-time between Green Bay and Marquette but the first since Dec. 14, It will also kick off the CBE Classic for the Phoenix, who will continue the tournament with three games beginning Saturday in Oxford, Ohio. The two teams have played all nine games in Miwaukee and have not met since a Golden Eagle win on Dec. 14, Green Bay s last win in the series was a win on Jan. 7, STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: Green Bay will take on a challenging schedule in , with 13 non-conference games against teams from seven different conferences. The schedule includes contests against teams from the BIG EAST (Marquette), Big Ten (Wisconsin), Mid-American (Miami (OH) and Buffalo), Mountain West (San Diego State and Wyoming) and Atlantic 10 (). The schedule also includes two contests against 2010 national runner-up Butler (Jan. 21 at Butler; Feb. 15 vs. Butler). REMEMBER ME?: In his four-year playing career, Wardle averaged 14.4 points per game in 117 games. As a senior in , Wardle averaged 18.8 points per game to finish his career with 1,690 points. Wardle graduated with a degree in communications from the school in 2001 before working from under then-head coach Tom Crean. PRESEASON ACCOLADES: Senior Rahmon Fletcher was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League first team on Oct. 19. Fletcher was joined on the first team by Butler s Shelvin Mack and Matt Howard, Cleveland State s Norris Cole and Valparaiso s Brandon Wood. The Phoenix was picked to finish seventh in the poll. EXPERIENCED SOUTHPAWS: Fletcher and Perine enter as one of the most experienced backcourts in the Horizon League. The lefty guards have combined to play 193 games in their Green Bay careers. Fletcher will play his 98th game and Perine his 97th tonight. Fletcher, who has started 93 games, entered the season as the nation s fifth-most experienced point guard in terms of games started. Brian Wardle became the sixth head coach in Green Bay history on April 15, 2010 He spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach with the Phoenix under Tod Kowalczyk. DOMINANT DEFENSE The Phoenix held UMD to just 23.7 percent shooting and 36 points in the opener. UMD s shooting percentage was the lowest by a Green Bay opponent since holding Idaho to 22.6 percent (12-53) on Nov. 17, The 36 points tied for the fourth-fewest by a Green Bay opponent in the shot clock era. The point total was also the smallest for a Phoenix foe since Green Bay defeated East Carolina on Dec. 8, The team s 39-point margin of victory is the largest for the Phoenix since downing Northern Michigan on Dec. 29, JUCO JOLT Junior college transfers Jarvis Williams and Steve Baker both started Saturday s opener against Minnesota Duluth. Williams had 10 points and six rebounds while Baker chipped in four points and six boards. BLOCK PARTY Freshman Alec Brown had six blocks in his college debut, just one shy of the program s single-game record of seven set by Nate Barnes against Northern Iowa on Dec. 11, The 7-foot-1 Brown added seven points and six rebounds in just 18 minutes. He scored 17 points in the team s exhibition victory over Edgewood on Nov. 8. IN THE SCORING COLUMN Five different Green Bay players scored their first collegiate points Saturday. Williams (10), Brown (7), Derek Semenas (6), Clayton Heuer (6) and Baker (4). BOARD WORK The Phoenix outrebounded UMD on Saturday, including in the second half. Green Bay had six different players corral six or more rebounds - sophomore Troy Snyder (8), senior Greg LeSage (7), Baker (6), Brown (6), Perine (6) and Williams (6). MOVING ON UP With 1,193 career points, Fletcher is only 166 points away from cracking the program s top-10 all-time scoring list. After passing Ryan Evanochko Saturday, Fletcher is currently 15th all-time. If the senior matched his scoring output, he would end his career as the fifth-leading scorer to wear a Phoenix jersey. JOIN THE CLUB Perine is only 381 points away from joining Fletcher in the program s 1,000-point club. As a junior in , Perine scored 442 points in averaging 13.4 points per contest. 4 I LL TAKE THAT Fletcher had three steals in Green Bay s season-opening victory against UMD. The senior currently has 151 steals in his Phoenix career, and with two more steals will tie Gary Grzesk for fifth on the program s alltime steals list. AND YOUR NAME IS The Phoenix will be integrating seven newcomers into the team this season. The newcomers include three junior college transfers (Jarvis Williams, Eric Valentin, Steve Baker), one Division I transfer (Terry Johnson) and three freshmen (Alec Brown, Kam Cerroni, Daniel Turner) Johnson will sit out due to NCAA rules while Wardle is still deciding whether or not to redshirt any of the freshmen. THE PERINE MACHINE While teammate Rahmon Fletcher earned a spot on the preseason all-conference squad, senior Bryquis Perine is focused on joining him at the end of the season. Perine averaged a career-best 13.4 points per game in while starting 33 games. It is not all about scoring for Perine, who ranked fourth in the Horizon League in assists per game (4.2) RESERVE ROLE As a freshman, Seth Evans played an important role off the bench for the Phoenix, playing in all 35 games Evans ranked eighth in the HL in three- PHOENIX NOTES HORIZON LEAGUE UPDATE point percentage, hitting 40 percent from long range (34-85). The sophomore will look to build on his averages of five points, 1.2 rebounds and one assist per game in Evans led the Green Bay bench with nine points in the opener, hitting two threepointers. IT S OUR TURN For Clayton Heuer and Derek Semenas, it had been a long time since they have played in a meaningful game prior to Saturday. The pair redshirted in but will be eligible to contribute for Green Bay as redshirt freshmen this season. Semenas had six points and Heuer had five in the Green Bay opener. THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Freshman Alec Brown, at 7-foot-1, is one of the tallest players in the country, while junior Eric Valentin, at 5-foot-4, is one of the shortest. During his tenure as an assistant, the Phoenix tallied 92 victories, an average of 18.4 wins per season. Helped the program to 44 victories and back-to-back postseason trips over the past two seasons. Was named a finalist in the Rising Stars category of the BasketballScoop Assistant Coach of the Year. Also ranked 14th in HoopScoop s top-50 mid-major assistant coaches. Serving as the program s primary recruiter, was named a Super Six Assistant in attracting Chicago talent by City/Surburban Hoops Report. Prior to coming to Green Bay, spent two seasons as director of basketball operations and three months as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Marquette ( ). Helped the Golden Eagles to two trips to the National Invitational Tournament working for head coach Tom Crean during his time. A 2001 graduate of Marquette, received a bachelor of science degree in communications. Currently ranks as Marquette s sixth-leading scorer after scoring 1,690 points in his career.
