3 USC Outlook OVERALL: PAC-10: 11 7 (T-4TH) 2001 NCAA TOURNAMENT EAST REGIONAL FINALISTS When you make history, what do you do for an encore? That s the question and challenge for the 2002 USC men s basketball team, which made its deepest foray ever in the NCAA Tournament in 2001, reaching the East Regional Final before bowing out against eventual national champion Duke. Yes, the Trojans had been to the Final Four before (1940 and 1954), but never before had USC won three games in any tournament and never before had it gone as far in the draw s current format. The Trojans finished 24-10, tying the school record for most wins in a season and ended the season ranked for the first time since For sixth-year USC men s basketball coach Henry Bibby, his answer to the above question is to keep pushing for more. The success the Trojans enjoyed put a spotlight on the program it hadn t experienced in at least a decade and the USC coaching staff plans to build on the momentum. It makes the program more recognizable, Bibby said. The exposure we got was tremendous. People are still congratulating me and the team every day. It helps in recruiting. It helps get us in the homes of some of the top players in the country. More high schools know about us now and people back East have a new respect for us. It was a major step. And, Bibby hopes, a stepping stone. That said, the losses from last year s squad can t be discounted. Gone is perhaps USC s most versatile big man ever and the program s sixth-highest scorer in forward/center Brian Scalabrine as well as possibly the most athletic Trojan ever, guard Jeff Trepagnier. Scalabrine was USC s second-leading scorer (14.7) and third-leading rebounder (5.9) last year while Trepagnier, after missing the non-conference season, came back to provide the necessary intangibles offensively (9.0 ppg) and defensively (5.1 rpg, 1.5 spg) that helped catapult USC during its postseason run. Forward Jarvis Turner (3.6 ppg), a versatile sixth man, and guard Tyler Murphy (2.2 ppg), a steady reserve who could play either backcourt spot, also both graduated. Also gone is center seldom-used Luke Minor (academics). But the 2002 Trojans won t be lacking for talent or senior leadership. Three of USC s NCAA Tournament trailblazing starters, 6-foot-7 forwards Sam Clancy and David Bluthenthal and 5-foot-9 point guard Brandon Granville, are back for their senior years, poised to make the Trojans postseason success a habit, not an anomaly. Said Bibby: We bring back three players who were cornerstones of the team that played in the Elite Eight last year. They are testaments to the statement that hard work pays off. I expect them to bring the seriousness back, to try to pick up where we left off. They will help us come in and get focused. I ve never seen guys in the gym so much in the summer or lifting as much. Joining the senior trio are five returning lettermen who are poised to increase their contributions: 6-foot-4 sophomore guard Desmon Farmer, 6-foot-1 junior point guard Robert Hutchinson, 6-foot-11 junior center Kostas Charissis, 6-foot-3 senior guard Gennaro Busterna and 6-foot-4 guard Nate Hair. Completing the team is one of the country s top incoming classes and Bibby hopes these newcomers will eventually match the contributions made by the class of 1999, which included Clancy, Granville, Bluthenthal and Scalabrine. This year s recruits all freshmen feature twin 6-foot-2 guards Errick and Derrick Craven, 6-foot-8 forward Nicholas Curtis and 6-foot-11 center Rory O Neil. But the focus of the team is its seniors, starting with Clancy, who returns as one of the top post players in the nation, a dominating big man who can score inside or outside and who has defensive skills to match. Though initially submitting his name for the NBA draft and participating in draft camps, Clancy ultimately withdrew his entry to return to the Trojans. Last season, Clancy earned 2001 All-Pacific-10 Conference, Sporting News Pac-10, NABC District 15 and USBWA District 9 first team honors, leading USC in scoring (17.3), rebounding (7.5), field goal percentage (.501) and blocked shots (81). He became USC s all-time leading shot blocker (147) and also set a school season record for rejections (81). Clancy earned East Regional All-Tournament Team honors as he led USC in scoring (18.0), rebounding (10.8) and blocks (4.0) in the Trojans four NCAA Tournament games. Clancy, set to start for his fourth season, is also 22 nd on USC s all-time scoring chart with 1,046 points. Said Bibby: We were going to support Sam Clancy with whatever decision he made, but obviously him coming back is a big boost for our team. I think he understands that he can only get better with another year of college ball. We re going to run a lot of our offense through Sam this year. We re simply going to have to get him the ball. He s proven that he can dominate a game. He became one of the best players in the Pac-10 and the nation last year and teams will pay a lot of attention to him this year. But I think he s up to the challenge. He ll get plenty of support from Bluthenthal and Granville, who enjoyed success together as state champion teammates in high school and have carried it over throughout their USC careers. Granville is USC s all-time leader in assists (595) and is set to start at point guard for the Trojans for his fourth season. One of the most effective playmakers in Pac-10 history, Granville is also one of USC s all-time three-point threats (third-most ever at USC with 162) and is 23 rd on Troy s career scoring list (1,030 points). Last season, Granville led the Pac-10 in assists (6.1) for the second consecutive year and finished as USC s fourth-leading scorer (12.4). Granville s 207 assists were the second-most ever in a season at USC, behind only his school season record of 248 set as a sophomore. Said Bibby: Brandon Granville has improved each year and really has become a leader for us. I expect him to continue to improve and bring up his level of intensity. I d like to see him be a little more aggerssive offensively and be a little more creative this year. Bluthenthal, in his third year starting for the Trojans, is a multi-dimensional threat on the court, equally adept at posting up or shooting the three-pointer and able to rebound the basketball with the best of them. He was USC s second-leading rebounder (6.8) and third-leading scorer (13.5) as a junior in He led the Trojans in three-point percentage (65-of-159,.409) and total three-pointers. Underrated defensively, he was second on the team in steals (50). His 65 three-pointers was the sixth-most ever in a season at USC. He earned East Regional All-Tournament Team honors by averaging 16.0 points and 6.3 rebounds in the postseason. Said Bibby: There s no better shooter or post-up player or rebounder than David Bluthenthal. I d like to see him get a little quicker and handle the ball a little more. He took some steps forward defensively last year, but I d like to see him continue to improve in that area as well. Among the reserves, Farmer has started 16 times and Charissis 13 times, valuable experience for both as their roles figure to increase.

4 USC OUTLOOK CONTINUED Both have good shots at starting this season. Look for Farmer to have the biggest impact among last year s reserves. A crafty scorer with a fiery on-court demeanor, he is a likely replacement for Trepagnier at shooting guard. Farmer started 16 of 32 games as a 2001 freshman, most of his starts coming in place of Trepagnier, who was ineligible for most of the first half of last season. Farmer averaged 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game. He started 15 of his first 16 games, averaging 9.1 points through the first half of the season. When Trepagnier returned, Farmer became a key reserve off the bench. Said Bibby: Desmon Farmer was very good as a starter last year. He was very good offensively. We have to try and control his play a little bit and get him more involved with our system. He can shoot from outside, drive to the basket and is a great rebounder. He plays with a lot of emotion and he gets the crowd into the game. He s reckless on the floor, and I kind of like that. He can play either the two or the three. He got stronger over the summer. He s basically a fourth returning starter for us. He s also probably our best passer. Charissis playing time was limited last year because of the team s veteran big men core. But the hard worker has shown flashes of the offensive and defensive skills necessary to be an effective center in the Pac-10. Charissis played in 18 games in 2001, averaging 1.2 points and 1.2 rebounds in 4.7 minutes per game. Said Bibby: Like Farmer, Kostas Charissis also has starting experience (as a 2000 freshman). And when he started, he played well. This year could be a great year for him. He can rebound and can score. He hasn t played a lot, but to play against guys like Sam Clancy and Brian Scalabrine in practice the last two years, that s going to make him better. Hutchinson proved to be a valuable reserve point guard during the NCAA Tournament last year when he came through with clutch performances against both Boston College and Kentucky. He played in every game in 2001, averaging 1.2 points in 7.4 minutes per game. Said Bibby: Robert Hutchinson proved to be a key for us last year and we look for more of the same this season. Busterna contributed little on the court last year, never quite recovering from the time he missed after suffering a toe injury in the preseason. He wasn t available to play until the Pac-10 season started and saw action in only eight games, going scoreless. But he was a strong contributor in practice, where he consistently proved to be a reliable outside threat. Said Bibby: I m really a fan of Gennaro Busterna. He s a great shooter who really showed what he could do in practice. He s kind of like (former Trojan sharp-shooter) Adam Spanich. He just drills shots, but he s a streaky shooter. When he s on, he s a very good player. I m excited to get him back. He needs to show us he can hit shots consistently. We expect him to give us a lot of outside offense. Hair also was sidelined at the start of last season, suffering a strained tendon in his knee in the preseason that kept him out of early action. He played in 15 games last year, starting once. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.4 rebounds in 9.9 minutes per game. Bibby will get considerable help in the backcourt from the Craven twins, a pair of athletic guards from Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance, Calif., who have earned a reputation for their tireless play on both ends of the court. Both prep All-Americans, Errick Craven averaged 19.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 2.6 steals and shot 53.0% from the field as a 2001 senior while his brother Derrick averaged 16.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.9 steals while shooting 56.0% from the field, leading the Knights to their second consecutive California and CIF Southern Section Division III titles. Said Bibby: Errick and Derrick Craven are blue-collar workers. Both are very skilled. We can t get two better guards than those two. They have nice size, are athletic, can score and play excellent defense. We picked up the whole package with those guys. Errick can get to the basket and dunk on you. He s exciting. He s physical and has quick feet. He s very aggressive and plays hard. Derrick has improved his shooting. He can defend and can drive. He s very similar to his brother. He s not getting as much credit as he deserves. We think he can help us. Bibby will also get a boost in the frontcourt with O Neil, from Burroughs High in Ridgecrest, Calif., and Curtis, from Oxnard (Calif.) High. Another prep All-American, O Neil is a skilled big man who can score inside and out. He averaged 25.1 points and 13.5 rebounds per game as a 2001 senior and ESPN.com named him the sixth-best prep center in the country. Said Bibby: Rory O Neil is so skilled it is scary. He could be a better version of Brian Scalabrine. He s a great offensive player. He runs the floor very well. He s still learning how to play, but he loves to compete and can make shots. He also has the potential to be a good shotblocker. He has to work on his strength, but that will come. Curtis is another big body that figures to be a factor in the post. A California All-State performer, he averaged 19.9 points, 14.8 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game as a senior in Said Bibby: Nicholas Curtis is 6-8 and still growing. He s an excellent rebounder. He was kind of overlooked but I think he ll surprise a lot of people. We expect him to contribute. Overall, USC looks to have struck a competitive balance of veteran leaders and talented newcomers and Bibby can t wait to see how it unfolds. Said Bibby: You re always going to miss people like Brian Scalabrine, Jeff Trepagnier, Jarvis Turner and Tyler Murphy because they re older guys and you can t replace that kind of maturity. But we re going to have a youthfulness about us this season and we ll have more energy. It will be a different team than last year and I m excited about that part. Going as far as we did last year changes the whole outlook of the program. The guys on the team know what it feels like to achieve that kind of success and they know the kind of work it takes to get there. We re bringing in a group of young players like we did three years ago and down the road, hopefully we ll see similar results as we saw this past year. With the group coming in, we should have continued improvement. USC faces a challenging schedule in The Trojans begin play as one of 16 teams in the Preseason NIT by hosting Wyoming and hope to reach the semifinals and finals at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Other non-conference dates include home games versus UC Santa Barbara, Rhode Island and Miami (Ohio) while other non-league road opponents include Bradley, Pepperdine (in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand), Long Beach State, San Diego and Loyola Marymount. For the first time since 1990, the Pacific-10 Conference will hold a postseason tournament to determine the league s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams in the conference will compete March 7-9 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Our preseason schedule is full of quality teams that should prepare us well for the Pac-10, Bibby said. And as usual, our conference will be one of the toughest in the nation. We will be tested throughout the season.

29 HENRY BIBBY HEAD COACH 6TH YEAR Henry Bibby, a coach with 19 years of college and professional experience and the only player to ever play for an NCAA, NBA and CBA championship team, is set to begin his sixth full season in as the head coach of the USC men s basketball program. This past year he guided the Trojans to their first ever NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance under the tournament s current format and led USC to its fourth winning season and third postseason berth (two NCAA, one NIT) under his watch. With the Trojans on the rise, Bibby was rewarded with a three-year contract extension on Aug. 4, 2000, which will take him through the season. We're happy with the progress of the Trojan men s basketball program under Henry Bibby, USC athletic director Mike Garrett said. This contract extension is a reflection of that. In 2001, Bibby led USC to perhaps its greatest season ever. In their second NCAA Tournament appearance under Bibby, the No. 6-seeded Trojans reached the East Regional Final before losing to Duke. USC s three NCAA Tournament wins (against No. 11 seed Oklahoma State, No. 2 seed Boston College and No. 3 seed Kentucky) were its most ever in one tourney and the Trojans final record of matched the most wins ever in one season at USC. The Trojans finished 11-7 in the Pac-10 (tied for fourth place). In , Bibby directed the Trojans to a overall finish and a 9-9 mark in the Pac-10 (sixth place), but USC fell just short of receiving a postseason berth. The Trojans looked to be headed to the NCAA Tournament after opening the Pac-10 season 6-1, but injuries to starting forward Sam Clancy and top reserve Jarvis Turner early in the conference schedule derailed the Trojans. In , Bibby directed a young Trojan squad, one with four new starters, to a overall mark and a 7-11 finish (tied for seventh) in a strong Pacific-10 Conference. USC earned an NIT bid for its sixth postseason appearance of the decade. USC went 9-19 overall in , but closed out the season with a stunning overtime victory over then-no. 2 Arizona and a rout of Arizona State. In his first full season at the helm of the Trojan program, Bibby did not waste any time in moving Troy in the right direction. The campaign saw the Trojans finish second in the Pacific-10 Conference and make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since USC s overall record (12-6 in the Pac-10) in represented one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation. The previous year, the Trojans went and finished ninth in the conference. The seven-game improvement was the third-biggest turnaround in USC history and the sevenspot increase in the standings matched a school best. In addition, Bibby s mark in is the best by a Trojan coach in his first full year since Forrest Twogood went 21-6 in his debut season in He capped off the 1997 season by being selected to the Hillyard/NABC Silver All-America team, which honored exceptional players from the Class of He joined, among others, USC alum Paul Westphal. Bibby was named USC s head coach on March 15, I m very excited about Henry Bibby and USC s basketball prospects under him, USC athletic director Mike Garrett said, announcing Bibby s hiring. He is well prepared and envisions the success that we seek at USC. I look forward to his years here. Bibby joined the Trojan program in May of 1995 as an assistant coach. He was named USC s interim head coach on Feb. 7, 1996, replacing Charlie Parker. Under Bibby s direction, the short-handed Trojans, who were down to just four active scholarship players at one point, lost their final nine games of that season. Bibby came to USC after coaching a club team in Venezuela in He was a head coach for eight seasons in the Continental Basketball Association, including three years each with the Oklahoma City Cavalry ( ) and Tulsa Fast Breakers ( ) and a year each with the Savannah Spirits (1988) and Baltimore Lightning (1986). His teams made it into the CBA playoffs six times and posted a regular season record, making him only the fourth CBA coach to post 200 wins. His 1989 Tulsa squad won the CBA title and he was named CBA Coach of the Year. He also spent three summers ( ) head coaching in the United States Basketball League and was the 1986 USBL Coach of the Year while leading the Springfield Fame. In 1987, he was a scout with the NBA s Washington Bullets. He was an assistant at Arizona State for three years ( ). Bibby was the starting point guard on three NCAA title teams ( ) at UCLA, earning consensus All-American honors while serving as the team s captain as a senior in The Bruins went 87-3 during his varsity collegiate career (one of the losses was to USC in 1970), including 30-0 in He averaged 15.6 points as a sophomore, 11.8 as a junior and 15.7 as a senior. He then played nine years in the National Basketball Association, averaging 8.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists during his career. He was with the New York Knicks ( ), New Orleans Jazz ( ), Philadelphia 76ers ( ) and San Diego Clippers (1981). In his entire NBA career, Bibby played in 675 games, scored 5,775 points, handed out 2,259 assists and pulled down 1,581 rebounds. His field goal percentage was 42.4% and he sank 78.2% of his free throws. In Bibby s rookie year of 1973, his New York Knicks won the NBA title. After being drafted in the fourth round with the 58th overall selection, Bibby was a supersub for the Knicks and known to provide instant offense. He made two other appearances in the NBA Finals, in 1977 and 1980 with the Philadelphia 76ers. In the NBA, Bibby played under several top-notch coaches, including Gene Shue, Red Holzman and Billy Cunningham. Immediately following his NBA days, Bibby was a player and assistant coach for the 1982 Lancaster Lightning, which won the CBA title. Some of the standouts Bibby has played with during his collegiate and professional days are Bill Walton, Sidney Wicks, Keith Wilkes, Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, Jerry Lucas, Dave DeBusschere, Phil Jackson, Pete Maravich and Julius Erving. Bibby won a slew of team awards during his collegiate days in Westwood. In 1969, he won the Seymour Armond Award as UCLA s most valuable freshman player. In 1970, Bibby took home the Irv Pohlmeyer Trophy, which goes to the outstanding first-year varsity player, and the Calkins Trophy for highest free throw percentage. In 1971, he earned the NCAA Tournament Trophy for all-around excellence in the NCAA Championships. In 1972, Bibby won the Alumni Association Award for academic achievement and team contribution, in addition to his second straight NCAA Tournament Trophy. Bibby was a prep All-American at Person-Albion High in Franklinton, N.C. His brother, Jim, was a pitcher in the major leagues. Bibby has two sons, Hank and Mike (who recently finished his third season with the Vancouver Grizzlies after being selected with the No. 2 pick in the 1998 NBA draft), and two daughters, Roslyn and Charlsie.
