5 HITTING THE GLASS Admittedly, the Buckeyes were not the best rebounding team this season, getting out-rebounded by 3.5 rebounds per game. But when they did win the battle on the boards, they ended up winning the game. The Buckeyes were 10-0 this year when grabbing more rebounds than their opponents and 33-3 under McGuff. Against Indiana on Jan. 7, the Buckeyes pulleddown a season-high 50 rebounds, marking the first time they grabbed 50 or more rebounds in a regulation game since Dec. 14, 2010 when they had 58 against USC Upstate. They also had 23 offensive rebounds against Indiana which were the most since pulling-in 23 o-boards against Colgate on Nov. 24, The last time the Buckeyes had 50 rebounds against a Big Ten team also came at home against Indiana on Jan. 17, COOPER FROM WAY DOWNTOWN Junior Shayla Cooper entered the game with previously unbeaten Purdue on Jan. 17 just 4-of- 16 from beyond the three-point arc this season. She proceeded to go 4-for-4 from long range against Purdue, including hitting three 3-pointers in the third quarter after Purdue had cut the lead to just four. The four three-point field goals against Purdue were a career-high for Cooper. She finished the game with 16 points. 110-STRAIGHT WITH A THREE Ohio State has made at least one three-point field goal in 110-straight games. The last time the Buckeyes failed to make a three-pointer in a game was on Feb. 10, 2013 at Northwestern. OSU was 0-of-6 from long range that game. Over the streak, the Buckeyes have made 10 or more threes in a game 20 times. The Buckeyes made 16 three-pointers in the wins over Belmont and Illinois this season which was one shy of the school's single-game record. Ohio State has made 34.4 percent (738-2,145) of its shots from beyond the arc and averaging 6.7 threes per game during the streak. This season, the team averaged 8.5 three-pointers per game and made 37.2 percent of its shots. MAKING THE MOST OF HER MINUTES Kelsey Mitchell was certainly efficient with her time on the court in the win over Illinois on Feb. 21. The Cincinnati, Ohio native played a career-low 23:39 (not a minute in the fourth quarter) and still scored 35 points on 11-of-14 shooting and 8-of-9 from long range. She scored nearly 1.5 points per minute she was on the floor. Mitchell was also 5-of-5 from the free throw line and had a game-high five assists. ALSTON HITS FROM DEEP Senior Ameryst Alston made a career-high eight three-pointers in the win at Penn State on Feb. 14. That topped her previous high of five. The eight threes were tied for the second-most in a single-game in school-history, trailing only Kelsey Mitchell's nine three-pointers against Minnesota last year. All eight of Alston's field goals against PSU came from beyond the arc and she finished with a game-high 26 points. ALSTON B1G POW FOR 3RD-STRAIGHT YEAR Ameryst Alston was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Feb. 15, for her efforts in three big Buckeye wins. Alston led the Buckeyes to a second-straight win over No. 5 Maryland (Feb. 8), a win at Iowa (Feb. 11) which was the first win in Iowa City for OSU since 2008 and a win at Penn State (Feb. 14) which pushed the Buckeyes' win streak to a season-high nine games. For the week, Alston averaged 22 points, six assists and four rebounds in the three games. She shot 50 percent from the floor and was 14- of-28 from long range. This was Alston s third Big Ten Player of the Week honor. She also earned the award once as a sophomore and once as a junior. GOING STREAKING The Buckeyes had win-streaks of 8 and 11 games this season. Both streaks topped last year s season-high win streak of six games which was set over the final four games of the regular season and the first two of the Big Ten Tournament. This year's streaks were the longest since Ohio State opened the season with 15-straight wins. SCORING INSIDE = WINS The Buckeyes have one of the top back courts in the country but when Ohio State wins the battle inside, it usually wins games. Ohio State scored more points in the paint than its opponents 20 times this season and were 18-2 in those games. Last season, the Buckeyes were also 18-2 when scoring more points in the paint then their opponents. Under McGuff, the Buckeyes have a record when scoring more points than its opponents in the paint. 6 CRAFT'S PERFECT NIGHT Senior Cait Craft enjoyed a perfect shooting night and was instrumental in the Buckeyes comeback victory over Northwestern on Jan. 28. Cait Craft was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor, 3-of-3 from long range and 1-of-1 from the free throw line to finish with 14 points. That was Craft s third double-figure scoring game this season and the first since scoring 11 points at Cincinnati on Dec. 6, The 5-for-5 shooting game for Craft was the first perfect game of her career with multiple field goals. It was the third game of the season for Craft with multiple three-point field goals. Top top it off, Craft s four assists in the game were her most since dishing-out nine against Belmont on Nov. 19, MCGUFF WINS NO. 300 Head coach Kevin McGuff recorded his 300th career victory in the Buckeyes win over No. 10/9 Texas A&M on Nov. 28, McGuff has won over 70 percent of the games he s coached and has a career record in 13-plus seasons. McGuff is with the Buckeyes. The Ohio native also coached nine seasons at Xavier ( ) and two seasons at Washington ( ). MITCHELL NAMED NATIONAL POW, AGAIN On Jan. 4, sophomore Kelsey Mitchell was named the ESPNW and College Sports Madness National Player of the Week for the second time this season. She led the Buckeyes to a pair of victories over ranked teams to start B1G play. She scored 25 points in the win over No. 22 Michigan State and then netted a game-high 28 points in the Buckeyes win over No. 5 Maryland in College Park. Her first award came on Nov. 30 after averaging 31 points in the two wins at the South Point Shootout en route to being named the tournament s Most Outstanding Player. She tied the school's single-game school-record with 42 points in the win over Texas A&M. Mitchell was also named B1G Player of the Week both weeks as well and has earned that award four times in her career. She has been named National POW of the week three times in her career. QUICKEST TO 1,000 Kelsey Mitchell became the fastest player in Big Ten history to reach 1,000 career points as she reached the mark in her 41st game. Mitchell s 1,000th point game in her school-record tying 42-point game against No. 10/9 Texas A&M on Nov. 28, That topped Kelly Mazzante of Penn State who reached the milestone in her 47th game. Katie Smith was the fastest Buckeye to reach 1,000 career points as she notched her 1,000th point in her 52nd game on Feb. 13, 1994 at Purdue. The NCAA record for fastest to 1,000 points was 37 games held by three players -- Maree Jackson, LSU ( ), Sandra Hodge, New Orleans ( ) and Kathy Miller, Weber St ( ). Mitchell is tied for the eighth-fastest to 1,000 points in NCAA history. ONE TOUGH SCHEDULE The Buckeyes had undoubtedly one of the toughest schedules in and at the end of the season, OSU's schedule was ranked No. 3 in the country. Ohio State faced all four teams that went to the Final Four last season and had arguably the toughest B1G schedule. After becoming the first team in NCAA history to open the year against No. 1 and No. 2, the Buckeyes faced No. 3 Notre Dame on Dec. 2 and No. 5 Maryland on Jan. 2 and Feb. 8. Of the other nine teams in the top-10 of last year's B1G Standings, Ohio State had to play five home and home series. Of the remaining four teams, three were on the road with just one at home. TYING RECORD MARKS Sophomore Kelsey Mitchell torched No. 10/9 Texas A&M for what was then a school-record tying 42 points. She had 31 of those point in the 2nd half on 8-of-9 from the floor. The 42 points tied what was Samantha Prahalis s single-game school record which she set on her senior day against Minnesota on Feb. 23, Mitchell also tied the single-game school record by making 15 free throws on 16 attempts. She tied Katie Smith (who had 15 free throws in a game two times) and Nikita Lowry. CRAFT SENIOR CLASS NOMINEE Senior guard Cait Craft was named one of 30 nominees for the 2016 Senior Class Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. Craft is one of the team leaders when it comes to giving back to the community. She regularly participates with the 2nd and 7 Foundation as well as other service groups around Columbus. Craft is a Human Nutrition major who plans to attend nursing school after graduation. She was also named a nominee for the WBCA Good Works Team which shines a spotlight on a select group of student-athletes who have shown dedication to community service and altruism in their communities by making outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. 6 BUCKEYES ON NCAA COMMITTEES Sophomore Kelsey Mitchell and track and field redshirt junior Donovan Robertson were appointed to prestigious NCAA Oversight Committees. Mitchell is serving as one of two student-athletes on the 16-member Women s Basketball Oversight Committee for the season. The group looks to enhance the development and public perception of the sport and make recommendations related to regular-season and postseason play. Robertson, a three-time All-American and twotime All-Big Ten selection, will serve in a similar role as the lone student-athlete representative on the Division I Competition Oversight Committee for a term of service through June of The 19-member Division I Competition Oversight Committee has oversight responsibility of regular season and championships administration in sports other than football and men s and women s basketball. O CAPTAINS, THY CAPTAINS Ohio State elected three players as team captains this year -- seniors Ameryst Alston and Cait Craft along with redshirt-freshman Kianna Holland. Holland s nomination was rather impressive as she earned the nomination before even playing a collegiate game. She is well respected and has a strong influence on the team both on and off the court. Holland joined the Buckeyes in January of For Alston, this was her second-straight season being named a team captain. Craft was one of the Buckeye s pillars over the last three years as she started 102-straight games in which she had played. THIS YEAR IN THE ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE After trailing by nine points most of the first half, the Buckeyes battled in the second half and took brief leads on two different occasions before falling at Notre Dame. ND found a way down the stretch, getting a huge three-pointer from Madison Cable with 56 seconds to play. That three-pointer gave the Irish a lead and despite Ameryst Alston s lay-in to tie the game, Notre Dame made 3-of-4 free throws and survived two attempts by Kelsey Mitchell in the waning seconds. Head coach Kevin McGuff was on the Notre Dame staff for six seasons ( ) and this was his first game coaching against the Irish since that stint.
