The loss dropped the Red & White s record to 7-13 (1-6 MAC) on the year while NIU improved to 13-5 (6-1 MAC). Miami Women s Basketball Quick Facts Location... Sophomore Kendall McCoy posted the team s first double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Northern Illinois took control early on by scoring the first 10 points of the contest before a Kristen Levering layup ended the run. The Huskies worked their lead to 18-4 with 4:11 to play in the opening quarter but Miami got things clicking with free throws from Kayla Brown and Leah Purvis, as well as a triple and a jumper from Dickerson. A three-pointer from Purvis and a lay-in from Kendall McCoy had the game back in a more manageable state through one quarter of play. After 10 minutes of action, NIU held a advantage. Miami narrowed its deficit early on in the second frame courtesy of two more makes from long range by Dickerson and a basket by Brown. With just under eight minutes to go in the half, the score stood at in favor of the Huskies. NIU answered with backto-back triples and two free throws but Miami came right back with baskets down low from Molly McDonagh and Brown. The Huskies continued the back-and-forth scoring by capturing the next six points before each team hit a three to close the half. NIU took a lead into the locker room. The second half opened with the RedHawks and Huskies trading blows. NIU was able to get to the line, sink free throws and slowly create some separation as time wore on. With the score holding steady much of the quarter, the Huskies closed the frame with a basket and six straight free throws to take a edge into the final 10 minutes of action. Despite tying their season-high with 29 points in the fourth quarter, the RedHawks could not overcome a hot NIU offense as the Huskies kept pace to keep MU at bay. The Red & White got to within 10 points on a couple of occasions but NIU would answer back each time. ABOUT OHIO: Miami s tough schedule does not get any easier with the Bobcats coming into Oxford with a 15-4 record on the year, including a 6-2 mark in MAC play. Ohio has come out victorious in their last three games with wins over Toledo, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. The Bobcats two defeats came at the hands of Northern Illinois and Toledo. Senior Quiera Lampkins leads OU offensively, scoring 19.2 points per game, the second-highest clip in the conference. As a team, the Bobcats average 70.2 points per game while allowing 60.1 per contest. The RedHawks last victory in the series came at Millett Hall, a decision on Mar. 8, UP AHEAD FOR THE REDHAWKS: Miami will hit the road for the first game next week, a Wednesday contest at Kent State. Tip for that game is set for 7 p.m. The Red & White close out next week by returning home to host Ball State at Noon. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN3, with the latter also appearing on BCSN and Spectrum Sports. DICKERSON LEADING THE WAY: She may only be 5-3, but freshman point guard Lauren Dickerson is leading Miami in nearly every major statistical category. She is the RedHawks leader in scoring (15.2 ppg), assists (3.9 apg), minutes played (30.3 mpg) and steals (2.0 spg). The Indianapolis, Ind., native has scored in doubles figures in 14 of the last 16 games, and 16 of 20 contests overall. The next closest is NIU s Janae Poisson at 29th (10.5 ppg). ALUMNAE WEEKEND: Part of this weekend s festivities include women s basketball s alumnae weekend. The RedHawks welcome back several former studentathletes with special recognition set to be given to the and teams. Those two groups were responsible for back-to-back MAC Championships with the team winning a school record 24 games, earning the program s fist-ever conference title. Between those two teams, there are three who have been inducted into the Miami Athletics Hall of Fame (Kris Livingston, Mary Ann Myers and Tonia Stubbs). HAWK TALK: The age old adage that communication is key applies to multiple situations in one s life. Playing the game of basketball is obviously no exception. In head coach Cleve Wright s weekly press conference this week, when asked what is the single biggest thing that his team can do to improve, he said that they need to talk more on the court. With a roster that features zero seniors and seven underclassmen, four of which have been or are becoming regular starters, it stands to reason that there will be some kinks to work out. The first step in remedying that is a strong line of communication. KLUESNER CATCHING ON: Freshman forward Savannah Kluesner came to Miami after being named the IAABO Small School Player of the Year in Missouri for the second-straight year in Despite her success at the high school level, it stands to reason that a student-athlete from that background may have a bigger leap and more adjustments to make when transitioning to the next level. The good news for the RedHawks is that Kluesner appears to be settling into her game. In nonconference play, the St. Charles, Mo., native averaged just 3.0 points per game and 3.1 rebounds per outing. Through seven games of MAC action, she is averaging 7.1 points per game and and 4.6 rebounds per contest. Kluesner has two career double-figure scoring performances, both of which have come at home in MAC play. LOOKING FOR SECONDARY SCORING: One thing the RedHawks have been lacking a good chunk of this season is a regular contributor to provide some secondary scoring. In non-conference action, Lauren Dickerson s 15.7 ppg led the team and she was followed by Kayla Brown (6.6 ppg), Leah Purvis (6.3 ppg) and Jazz Smith (6.1 ppg). Conference play has seen several players, including Purvis (8.3 ppg), McCoy (8.9 ppg) and Savannah Kluesner (7.1 ppg), all take a step in providing an offensive boost. The RedHawks have had more than two players score in double figures just once all season, back on Jan. 11, against Eastern Michigan McCoy (14), Kluesner (13), Dickerson (11) and Brown (11). 4 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L WHAT RETURNS: With nine returning letterwinners and four returning starters, Miami has a large majority of its statistical contributions back from last season. The RedHawks return 84.0 percent of their scoring, 81.3 percent of their rebounding, 81.9 percent of their assists, 88.3 percent of their steals and 76.3 percent of their blocks from last year s squad. Their top returning scorer is junior guard Baleigh Reid, who averaged 15.3 points per game. However, she is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury suffered in late February and is out indefinitely. The top returning active scorer is sophomore guard Leah Purvis. She started all 30 games and averaged 10.7 points per contest as a freshman. PURVIS SELECTED TO TEAM USA FOR WORLD MACCABIAH GAMES: Maccabi USA recently announced its team that will represent the United States in open women s basketball championship at the World Maccabiah Games in Israel next July. Miami sophomore guard Leah Purvis will be a part of this 12-person team. Purvis is believed to be the first RedHawk to represent Team USA in women s basketball. The last Miami student-athlete to participate in the World Maccabiah Games was track and field sprinter Margarita Pogorelov, who represented Israel in 2009 and took home a bronze medal in the 5,000 meters. The Maccabiah Games are the world s third largest international sporting event and attracts elite Jewish athletes from around the world. The Maccabiah Games in 2017 will take place from July 4-18 and will be comprised of 9000 athletes from 80 countries. The Games provide Jewish athletes the opportunity to come to Israel and compete at an elite level while also building connections with their teammates, competitors and the people of Israel. 7 WOMEN S B A S K E T B A L L 7 Cleve Wright returns for his fourth season in charge of the Miami women s basketball program. Wright came to the RedHawks after a very successful 11-year run at Gannon that featured five NCAA Tournament appearances and two runs to the Elite Eight. Wright holds a career coaching record of His young Miami team last year saw 94 percent of all its available minutes played by freshman and sophomores. Despite that the RedHawks were 6-5 in non-conference play. Injuries and inexperience caught up with the team in MAC play as it finished 9-21, but now with several veterans, combined with a powerful recruiting class joining them, Wright has the RedHawks ready to take the next step this season. Wright won 70 percent of his games at Gannon ( ), turning the Lady Knights into a Division II powerhouse. In his final season there in 2013, he led Gannon to a 31-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The team finished the season ranked sixth in the country. Wright brought the Lady Knights to the NCAA Tournament in five of the his last seven seasons, with his best year coming in when he was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year after guiding them to a 37-1 record and an NCAA Final Four appearance. He coached seven All-Americans and 37 all-conference selections.
