Colorado claimed wins over ranked teams in back-to-back outings for the fi rst time since defeating #9 Missouri in Boulder and No. 21 Kansas State in Manhattan Jan 8 & 12, It s the fi rst time in program history Colorado has defeated AP Top 15 teams in back-to-back games Colorado s thrilling overtime win Arizona State snapped a three-game skid and was Colorado s highest AP ranked win since defeating No. 3 Texas, 93-80, in Boulder on Feb. 4, The Buffaloes won their fi rst six games before fi nishing the nonconference schedule at 8-4. Colorado opened Pac-12 play on the road for the third straight year and fourth time in the last six seasons, dropping games at Oregon State and Oregon last. Colorado is averaging 74.6 points per game while shooting 44.6 percent from the fi eld. Overall the Buffaloes have been balanced in scoring with three players averaging double-fi gures and fi ve averaging between six and 16 points an outing. Defensively, Colorado is allowing 74.1 points per game while holding opponents to 42.2 percent shooting and 34.5 percent from 3-point range. Colorado is second in rebounding (39.1 rpg) and defensive rebounds (28.4 drpg), third in rebounding margin (+4.8) and fi fth in fi eld goal defense and offensive rebounds (10.8 orgp) on the Pac-12 charts. McKinley Wright IV leads Colorado at 15.6 points, 5.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He averaged 17.5 points, 7.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds against the Arizona schools, earning Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Jan. 8. Wright recorded his third career double-double, and second of the points-assists variety with 19 points and 10 assists against Arizona. He had 19 points with five assists and a pair of steals against Arizona State. With 88 total assists he already ranks sixth in assists in a season by a Colorado freshman in just 17 career games. Wright also leads the team lead in fi eld goals made and attempted (97 of 208) while ranking second in rebounding (4.8 rpg) and third in blocks (9) and 3-pointers made (18). He recorded his second double-double of the season, and first of the points-assists variety, with 30 and 11 respectively against South Dakota State. Wright nearly picked up the school s fourth triple-double ending with nine rebounds. It was Colorado s fi rst points-assists double, and most assists in a game, since Askia Booker had 16 and 12 against UCLA on Feb. 13, On the Pac-12 charts, Wright is second in assists, 11th in assist-toturnover ratio (1.5) and 13th in scoring and offensive rebounds (1.9 orpg). He tops all Pac-12 freshmen in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio and is third in scoring. George King leads Colorado in rebounding at 8.2 per game while ranking second in scoring at 13.5 points an outing. King had his fourth double-double of the season, and 11th of his career, with 21 points and 10 rebounds at USC. King tied a career high with fi ve 3-pointers made. King had a team-high 11 rebounds with fi ve points in the win over Arizona. It was his 11th career double-fi gure rebound game and fi rst that didn t result in a double-double. King nearly missed another double-double with 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds against Arizona State. King had back-to-back monster games, scoring 25 points with identical 9 of 13 shooting performances (.692) in wins over Air Force and Mercer. But Colorado had no answer for the hot-shooting Bruins in the second half, as UCLA carved out a win at the Coors Events Center to hand the Buffs their fourth straight loss. Sparked by three 3-pointers from Bryce Alford in the first three minutes of the half, UCLA quickly turned a six-point halftime lead into a 20-point margin with 11 minutes to go and the Buffs never made a serious run at closing the gap after that. The Bruins finished the game shooting 56.5 percent from the field (35-for-62), including a sparkling 19-for-31 night from 3-point range (61.3 percent). Alford, who hit 9 of his 14 3-point tries, finished with a game-high 37 points. Tip my hat to UCLA, CU head coach Tad Boyle said. They re a terrific offensive basketball team, as good of an offensive team as I ve coached against at the collegiate level in 23 years. My hat goes off to Steve Alford and obviously his son Bryce, who had a heck of a night. They just move the ball and share the ball, they re very very difficult to guard in transition and halfcourt. The loss, CU s fourth in a row, dropped the Buffs to 10-7 overall and 0-4 in Pac-12 play while the Bruins improved to 16-1, 4-1. Xavier Johnson led the Buffs with 21 points, Derrick White added 20 and George King chipped in 13. HOW IT HAPPENED: For the first 20 minutes, the Buffs appeared ready to run with the Bruins. After falling behind early, 7-2, Colorado battled back to take the lead twice in the first 20 minutes. A Johnson 3-pointer gave Colorado a 12-9 edge at the 15:34 mark and a Bryce Peters free throw helped the Buffs to a lead at the midway point of the half. The Bruins, though, quickly regained the lead and held it the rest of the half. UCLA s big lead of the half was eight points, 51-43, with just more than a minute to go, but a Gordon jumper as time expired pulled Colorado back to within six, 51-45, at intermission. White led the Buffs in scoring in the first half with 12 points while Johnson added 11 and King chipped in eight. One big reason the Buffs stayed close was a ege on the boards, including 10 offensive rebounds. But the Bruins quickly doused any serious hopes of a CU upset early in the second half. Three quick 3-pointers from Alford helped the Bruins boost their lead to double digits and the margin hit 20 just nine minutes into the half. An Isaac Hamilton 3-pointer at the 11:40 mark off an assist from Lonzo Ball pushed UCLA s cushion to That was kind of the one that I thought stuck a dagger in us a little bit, Boyle said. Lonzo Ball is as good as there is. If there s a better point guard in the country, I d like to see him. He s pretty special. Ball finished with 11 points and eight assists. The Buffs did cut UCLA s margin down to 13 with seven minutes to go on a White layup and free throw, but that was as close as CU could come down the stretch. When you score 89 points in your own building, it should be good enough, but against UCLA it s not, Boyle said. Not the way we defended UCLA. There are times in life where you have to tip your hat to your opponent. They deserved to win. They were a better team than us tonight. The Buffs don t have much time to fret over the loss. They play host to No. 25 USC on Sunday, with the Trojans coming to Boulder on the heels of an loss Thursday at Utah. Big game, Boyle said. No question about it. Junior guard Namon Wright is third on the team in scoring at 13.5 points and is second in steals (11) and 3-point fi eld goals (19) and fourth in assists (19). Wright leads the Buffaloes in scoring through fi ve Pac-12 games at 13.4 points an outing on 49 percent shooting. Wright had 14 points and a CU personal best eight rebounds against Arizona. He matched his Colorado personal best with a team-high 20 points at Oregon. Wright s other 20-point game came at Xavier where he also collected a career-high six steals, the most by a Buffalo since Spencer Dinwiddie had six against Jackson State on Nov. 16, At the Paradise Jam, Wright averaged 16 points while shooting 44 percent. He shot 83 percent from the free throw line, going 19 of 23. Dominique Collier is averaging 6.8 points and is second on the team in assists with 25. Collier had 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting against Arizona. He scored 11 points and dished out a season-high six assists against Arizona State. He is averaging 8.0 points and shooting 56 percent (14 of 25) through the fi rst fi ve Pac-12 games, including 8 of 15 from 3-point range. Collier has four double-digit scoring games on the season including a game-high 16 points in the win over New Mexico. Sophomore guard Deleon Brown is fi fth on the team in scoring at 6.0 points per game and is third in steals (10). Brown had six points on a pair of 3-pointers at Oregon State, marking his fourth game with multiple 3-pointers in six outings. Brown had 10 points and dished out a pair of assists against South Dakota State. For Brown, it was his sixth career game scoring in double-fi gures and third this season. He matched a season high with 13 points in the Paradise Jam championship win over Mercer. Freshman Dallas Walton scored a career-high 15 points against Arizona on a perfect 7 of 7 from the field. His seven field goals without a miss are the most by a Colorado player in a game since Xavier Johnson was 7 for 7 vs. Oregon on March 7, Walton was just 3 of 12 from the fi eld in his previous three Pac-12 games. He leads Colorado and ranks 13th in the Pac-12 at 1.0 blocks per game. Over half of his blocked shots (8 of 15) have come in fi ve Pac-12 games. Overall he is averaging 4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Freshman forward Tyler Bey averages 5.1 points and is third on the team in rebounding at 4.5 a game. Bey had a Pac-12 high seven rebounds, along with eight points, at USC. He has shot 62 percent (13 of 21) through five Pac-12 games. Bey had eight points and eight rebounds in the win over Arizona State. He is averaging 7.4 points and ranking second on the team in rebounding during conference play at 5.2 an outing. Freshman forward D Shawn Schwartz is averaging 3.1 points and 1.8 rebounds. He had his fi rst career double-digit scoring game with 10 points against Arizona. He had just 10 points in his previous seven games combined. It was his fi rst career game with multiple 3-pointers. He was just 1 of 8 from 3-point range the previous three games. Sophomore forward Lucas Siewert had a season-high 14 points against South Dakota State, his third career double-fi gure scoring game an just one off his personal best of 15 set last year against Stanford. His six fi eld goals made against the Jackrabbits were also a career high. Freshman guard Lazar Nikolic is averaging 2.4 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. He is fi fth on the team in assists with 18. Nikolic had six rebounds and a personal-best two steals at Oregon. He is averaging 3.8 rebounds over the last four games. The Bruins have won two straight and six of their last seven games, with the lone loss a double-overtime setback at Stanford on Jan. 4. UCLA is second in the Pac-12 in scoring at 85.5 points per game while shooting 47.4 percent from the fi eld. Beyond the arc, UCLA is the league s second-best 3-point shooting team at 38.2 percent. Junior guard Aaron Holiday leads UCLA at 19.4 points and 5.3 assists per game. Holiday is shooting 48 percent from the fi eld and 80 percent from the 3-point line. Freshman guard Kris Wilkes is averaging 13.9 points and 5.3 rebounds. Senior center Thomas Welsh sports the season double-double at 12.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Steve Alford is in his fi fth year at UCLA with a record of He is in his 27th overall season as a collegiate head coach with a record of THE SERIES: This will be the 14th meeting between Colorado and UCLA with the Bruins holding a 11-2 edge. The Bruins have won the last three and 7 of 8 since Colorado joined the Pac-12 for the season. Colorado will be looking for its fi rst win at UCLA in its ninth try. Both of Colorado s wins in the series have come in Boulder, most recently a decision on Jan. 2, Tad Boyle is 1-7 against UCLA as a head coach. Steve Alford is 5-1 against Colorado as a head coach. AGAINST RANKED TEAMS: Colorado is 2-1 against ranked opponents this season after its win over No. 14/16 Arizona. Colorado s 17 wins over ranked opponents in Boyle s seven-plus seasons is by far the best streak in team history. In fact Boyle coached

5 teams, with a record of 17-29, have accounted for 28 percent of wins over ranked opponents (61) since STEALING THE SPOTLIGHT: Colorado had a team season-high 12 steals in the loss to Iowa on Dec. 22. The 12 steals were the most since the Buffaloes had 12 against Washington State on Feb. 12, The 12 steals were the most away from Boulder since recording 12 at Arizona State on Jan. 25, George King and McKinley Wright IV both had personal bests with three steals each while Deleon Brown s two matched a career high. Colorado s 12 steals were on the heels of swiping eight against South Dakota State the week before. BENCH NUMBER 95?: Colorado produced one of oddest statistical numbers of the season anywhere when it scored 95 points off the bench against South Dakota State. The circumstances? A perfect storm really. Colorado shook up its starting lineup to feature three freshmen and a senior walk-on along with a regular senior starter. Kountz is a 6-foot, 4-inch, 180-pound guard from Denver s East High School. Parquet is a pound combo guard out of West Brook High School in Beaumont, Texas. ITALY TOUR: Colorado played four exhibition games during a 10- day tour of Italy in August It was the perfect mix of basketball and sightseeing for the Buffaloes, touring some of the most storied locales in Italy, many ranging from 1,000 to over 2,000 years old. The Buffaloes started their trip with four days in Rome that included tours of the Roman Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and the Vatican. From there it was off to Siena, Florence, Venice, Treviso and fi nally Lake Como.
