She ended the season ranked second on the team averaging 10.1 points per game and also topped the team averaging 8.8 rebounds per game. Bonner ended her junior year in with 247 total rebounds for the season exceeding her career-best seasonal mark of 237 from her sophomore campaign. REBOUNDING BONNER: For her career, Sherae Bonner has 655 career rebounds ranking her 12th in the WCU record books. She eclipsed the 600 rebound mark in her junior campaign. Bonner needs 15 rebounds to move into 11th place replacing former Catamount Serena Surratt who ended her Catamount career ( ) with 669. Should Bonner eye the top spot for rebounds in the WCU record books she has some work to do in her senior campaign to catch a pioneer in the women s basketball program here at Western Carolina as former WCU standout Brenda Johnson ( ) ened her career with 1,018. The Catamounts will also have four players added to the roster ready to play as Erykah Russell and Mariah Locklear return from a redshirt and junior college newcomers Kennedy Rushin and Judith Martin Ruiz will also suit up for the Catamounts. 2 GAME NOTES BONNER NOTES: Senior forward Sherae Bonner will look to build from her successful junior cambaign on the court and on the boards. She ripped down a career best 247 rebounds last season and also had 41 blocks. She also has 103 blocks in her career ranking her fourth in the WCU record books. She needs 25 blocks for third place. Sherae Bonner ended the season with nine double-doubles. Western Carolina was 4-5 last season when Bonner had a double-double. There was one freshman in the starting line-up in 26 of 30 games in season, two freshmen in the starting lineup eight times and three freshmen thrice. In the season, Western Carolina has had at least one player score in double figures in 28 of 30 games this season. The Catamounts had three or more players score in double figures nine times. Sherae Bonner currently has 103 career blocks ranking her fourth in the WCU record books. She also ranks 12th in the Catamount books for rebounds with 650. Western Carolina and Davidson meet for the 51st time in the two team s history... It was all Mocs from the outset scoring a season-high 30 points in the first quarter. Leading 14-8 with a little under five minutes left in the opening frame, they closed the quarter with a 16-0 run for a 30-8 advantage. WCU scored the first basket of the second quarter but was held to one field goal over almost seven minutes. UTC s 13-3 spurt over that span built the margin to 30, 43-13, on Chelsey Shumpert s layup. Sherae Bonner s layup cut the margin to 28, but that s as close as it would get for the Catamounts. A layup from Shelbie Davenport 32 seconds later put the lead back at 30 before heading into halftime up Joyner led the game with 14 points and was joined in double figures by Davenport, with whom she shared game-high honors at 14, and Shumpert with 12. Davidson outscored Western Carolina in every period. Western Carolina kept it close, especially in the third period, as the Wildcats just edged WCU in scoring Trailing after three periods, Western Carolina failed to score in the first five minutes of the third period allowing Davidson to open the period on an 8-0 run. Senior forward Erika Joseph ended the Catamount fourth period scoring drought when she hit a field goal, at 5:08, and connected on a free throw after being fouled. Western Carolina hung around in the game thanks to shooting 88.9 percent, 8-for-9, from the free throw line. However, the team was frosty from the field shooting 31.2 percent for the game. She became the 11th Head Coach for Western Carolina women s basketball April 17, As a second-year head coach, McCormick helped guide Sherae Bonner to her best season as a Catamount in her junior campaign. For Bonner s efforts, she was named to the SoCon All-Conference third team. In her first season, McCormick helped produce a Southern Conference All-Freshman selection in Raziyah Farrington who ranked second on the team averaging 8.7 points per game. McCormick has served at five different institutions during her career including two stints as an assistant at Western Carolina. Her teams made nine postseason appearances with four apiece in both the NCAA Tournament and WNIT. She returns to Cullowhee after spending two years as an assistant coach at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. In her second year as an assistant at Siena, Mc- Cormick helped guide the Saints to a overall record, advancing to the Women s Basketball Invitational (WBI) championship game. Siena s 22 wins this season were a 13-win improvement from the previous year, which was tied for the second-best turnaround in all of Division I women s basketball. Siena made its first national postseason tournament appearance in 12 years, and became the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school to win three games in a single postseason and advance to the championship game of a tournament. Prior to taking the position at Siena, McCormick spent nine years serving under Kellie Harper at both Western Carolina ( ) and North Carolina State ( ). During that time, she helped guide those schools to three NCAA Tournament and four WNIT berths. The Wolfpack made three postseason appearances during McCormick s four seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in That season her recruiting efforts help land the 19th best recruiting class in the nation according to Blue Star Basketball, 28th by ESPN Hoop- Gurlz and 29th by Premier Scouting Service. McCormick, who began her coaching career at Western Carolina from as an assistant to head coach Gary Peters, helped guide the Catamounts to four postseason berths in her five seasons working on Harper s staff, including a pair of Southern Conference titles. She also oversaw the program s academic success which captured three WBCA Academic Top-25 awards in five seasons including the squad which ranked fifth nationally. Prior to her second stint at Western Carolina, McCormick made coaching stops at Georgia Tech ( ), Charlotte ( ) and UNC Wilmington ( ), serving as the associate head coach during her final three seasons with the Seahawks at the latter. She was the recruiting coordinator at both Georgia Tech and Charlotte, which boasted the No. 5 and No. 24 ranked recruiting classes in the country in 2004 and 2002 respectively according to the All Star Girls Report. A native of High Point, N.C., McCormick is a 1994 graduate of Catawba College. She holds her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and is a member of both the Women s Basketball Coaches Association and Black Coaches Association. The first player in school history to amass both 1,000 career points and rebounds, she holds Catawba s school record for both career (1,244) and single season rebounds (374).
