2 Husky Outlook Improved Huskies Looking to Make an Impact Louise Friberg Thanks to a successful fall campaign that saw the Washington women s golf team finish in the top three of each of its fall tournaments, the Huskies were able to enjoy the break between the fall and the spring competitive seasons ranked seventh in the nation. It is the highest ranking ever for the Husky program. Washington head coach Mary Lou Mulflur, who is in her 20th season directing the Huskies, says the lofty ranking has served as motivation for her veteran team. Historically, we have not been a great team in the fall in terms of where we have finished at tournaments, Mulflur says. That can get down on you as you practice and wait for the spring season to begin. This year, the players are really looking forward to getting after it and proving that the ranking is deserving and that they can continually play at that level. Mulflur says despite the solid results in the fall, the Huskies feel they have plenty of room for improvement. Our consistency was really good, Mulflur says. That is something every team strives for in its scoring and our players did a great job of staying focused and grinding out some solid scores. But, they also feel they re capable of doing much more. We never really had a hot round in the fall. We scored between 294 and 304 and that is a nice, neat package, but no one went out and re- 2 Michelle Grafos ally posted a great round. Our scoring average was one of the best in the nation. If we can keep doing that, we will be fine. We certainly have the players that help us improve on the low end and I think we will see that this year. That is why the players are so excited. They liked the results, but Lindsay Morgan 2 Paige Mackenzie know they can do much better. The Huskies will pursue their sixth NCAA Championship appearance in the last nine years without the top player to ever carry a bag at Washington. Two-time All-American Kelli Kamimura was a senior last year, but will still assist the team this season as an undergraduate coach. Kamimura finished her career with a school record four tournament championships. She owns the top two single-season stroke average marks (74.3 and 74.5) and had the most top-10 finishes (20) of any Husky. The rest of our lineup is back, so basically we are looking at replacing Kelli with a true freshman, Mulflur says. I do not have the same expectations of a first-year player as I had for Kelli, so it is very important that the other players raise their level of play if we want to be highly competitive. From what I saw this fall, they are making that type of a commitment. The most experienced players are seniors Louise Friberg and Michelle Grafos. Both have played in the NCAA Championships as a sophomore and junior. Last year Friberg led the Huskies in stroke average at despite being UW s top scorer in just one event. She was Washington s number-two score in nine of 11 tournaments, including the NCAA Championships where she carded a second-round score of 67, the best 18-hole total

3 Husky Outlook in her career. While she has never won a tournament, Friberg has recorded 10 top-10 finishes during her career. Last fall she was the Huskies top finisher at their final two events and turned in consistent scoring between 72 and 75 in all nine of her rounds for a stroke average of She finished the fall ranked 29th by Golfweek. I was really impressed by Louise s play last year and she showed this fall she has more room for improvement, Mulflur says. I think she has a chance to be an All-American this year. She has really worked hard on her short game and wedge play and that is going to allow her to break through with some below-par rounds this year. Louise has also done a nice job of stepping up and taking on the role of being a team leader. Grafos, a two-time selection to the NGCA All-Scholar-Athlete team, came through with her best play last year during the postseason. A veteran of 29 tournaments, she was the Huskies number-three scorer at the NCAAs. When we really had to have her, when things were not going well for us as a team, she really stepped up her game and helped us last year, Mulflur says. I think she took a lot of confidence away from those situations. She s a senior and she knows this is it. She had a tough fall, but I fully expect her to rebound and have her best season ever as a senior. One reason for Washington s improved team scoring during the first half of the season was junior Lindsay Morgan s play. The team s longest hitter, she showed dramatic improvement last spring and was the Huskies top scorer three times during a month of tournament play. Breana Minnitti Sung Ea Lee Morgan s stroke average of 75.6 ranked as the sixth best single-season mark in Washington history. An honorable mention All-Pac-10 pick as a sophomore, Morgan was even more impressive this fall. After three events she posted a stroke average of and finished the fall ranked 54th by Golfweek. All nine of her rounds were between 73 and 77. I really enjoy Lindsay s attitude, Mulflur says. She is always asking what she can do to help. She is also the type of athlete that likes to be challenged. Lindsay is someone we will be able to count on this year for some very consistent play. I think she can meet any high expectations that are thrown at her. Sophomore Paige Mackenzie rounds out the list of returning veterans. While the youngest member of the group, Mackenzie has demonstrated she could be the Huskies best performer on the leaderboard. As a freshman, Mackenzie was one of Washington s top three scorers in 10 of 12 events. She earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors, was named to the NGCA All-Scholar-Athlete team and was the second highest finishing freshman at the NCAA Championships. Mackenzie placed 25th at the NCAAs, the best finish ever by a Husky at the event. Mackenzie led the Huskies in the fall with a stroke average of 73.8, highlighted by a thirdplace finish at the McGuire Invitational. Golfweek ranked her 26th in its final fall poll. The sky is the limit for Paige, Mulflur says. She is probably the toughest mentally of any player I ve had. She just finds a way to get it done. 3 She is also capable of shooting much better scores than she did in the fall. I think she is capable of being a top-ten player and someone who can go out and challenge for medalist honors at just about any event. Joining the Husky lineup is a trio of freshman including Sung Ea Lee, Breana Minnitti and Katie Kofmehl. Lee is the only one of the three newcomers who appeared in all three fall events. A veteran of numerous national junior events, Mulflur feels Lee is capable of being a contributing scorer during his first year as a collegiate. She did a really nice job this fall of making the transition to the college game and realizing pretty quickly that she can compete, not just participate, at this level, Mulflur says. She is extremely talented. She has played in a lot of events and knows how to handle the pressure. Mulflur expects Kofmehl to redshirt the season, but thinks Minnitti could crack the Huskies lineup. Breana is capable of challenging for a spot in the lineup, Mulflur says. We re going to give her some opportunities, but she will have to earn her spot. A lot is how motivated she is. She is quite fearless for someone who has not had much more than high school or local tournament experience. She has a tremendous upside. The team did a very nice job this fall and they saw the results of their work when they broke into the top-10 in the rankings, Mulflur says. We have a very solid team. Now we just need to go out and play on a very consistent, but high level. That is a big challenge. I know these players are excited to see if they can do it. Katie Kofmehl 3

11 The Coaches Mary Lou Mulflur Head Coach 20th Season In the history of the Husky women s golf team, two individuals stand out as the cornerstones for the program. The first is Edean Ihlanfeldt, the namesake of the Huskies annual fall tournament. She was Washington s first coach. So dedicated to seeing women have an opportunity to compete on the intercollegiate level, Ihlanfeldt never accepted a paycheck for her efforts. She funneled her salary back into the program. The second is current head coach Mary Lou Mulflur, who is in her 20th year of directing the program. A player for Ihlanfeldt, Mulflur s passion and commitment to Husky golf makes her former mentor proud. Mulflur s dedication, teaching skills and fundraising abilities have allowed her to build the Husky program into one of the nation s most competitive teams on an annual basis. Mulflur s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Following the 1999 season she was named Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year. It was the second time Mulflur earned the honor, with the first coming in In 2001 Mulflur led Washington to a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the best showing by a Husky team at the national championships. The 2002 season marked the 10th consecutive season Washington has advanced to NCAA Regional competition, every season since the inception of the regionals in UW s NCAA Championship appearance was the fifth by the Huskies in the past eight seasons. During the 2002 season the Huskies won Oregon Duck Invitational and the Peg Barnard California Collegiate and tied for fifth at the Pac-10 Championships. The team set a 54-hole scoring record at the Stanford Invitational, shooting 874 to shatter the old mark by 16 strokes. At the Spartan Invitational, the team recorded the lowest 18-hole total (285) in school history. In 2001, Mulflur saw Kelli Kamimura earn second-team All-America honors. She was the fourth Husky golfer to earn All-America recognition under Mulflur s tutelage. She has also seen 12 Huskies named to the All-Scholar Athlete team on 19 occasions, including Michelle Grafos and Paige Mackenzie in Mulflur was instrumental in helping Washington earn the right to host the 2002 NCAA Championships at Washington National Golf Club. In 1995, Mulflur directed the Huskies to their first team NCAA Tournament appearance on the strength of a best-ever sixth-place finish in the NCAA West Regional. In 1988, the UW had its best Pac-10 finish ever, placing third in the conference tournament. That year brought Mulflur her first Pac-10 Coach of the Year award. Mulflur has coached several Husky players who have gone on to play professionally. Nancy Kessler McDaniel, who played at UW from 1984 to 1987, went on to play on the LPGA tour and is now the head coach at California. Mulflur, regarded as one of the most successful golfers to come out of the UW, came to Washington in 1976 and was one of the first female athletes to receive a scholarship at Washington. The Portland, Ore., native went on to earn four letters as a Husky. Before her career was over, Mulflur won three regular-season tournaments, including the inaugural Ihlanfeldt Invitational in 1980 a feat only surpassed by Kamimura. While attending Grant High School, Mulflur won state high school titles in 1974 and She also won the 1975 Oregon junior championship. Mulflur added the Southern Oregon titles in 1980, 1982, 1995 and 1997 to her list of accolades. She achieved another milestone during her playing career in 1979 and 1880 when she competed at the U.S. Open Championships. In addition she competed in four National Collegiate Championships, and three U.S. Amateur Championships. Mulflur graduated from Washington in 1980 with a degree in speech communications. She is former vice-president of the National Golf Coaches Association and served on the LPGA SAFECO Classic Advisory Board. She has appeared as a celebrity player in several local golf events and fundraisers. Kelli Kamimura Assistant Coach 1st Season Kelli Kamimura makes the move from player to undergraduate coach this season as she assists Mary Lou Mulflur in the supervision of the Husky program. Kamimura finished her Husky career in 2002 as the most decorated golfer in Washington history. Twice during her career, as a freshman and junior, she was named to the NGCA All-America team. Kamimura set the UW 54-hole scoring record with a 209 she posted as a junior. Kamimura finished her career with four event championships, the most in UW history. She also topped the career list for top-10 finishes with 20 and owned the single-season stroke average mark of 74.3 she set in All four of Kamimura s annual stroke averages ranks among the top 12 in UW history. During her junior season, she finished third at the Pac-10 Championships, the best finish ever by a Husky. That same season she finished eighth at the NCAA West Regional. Kamimura earned all-pac-10 honors as a freshman, junior and senior. Kamimura majored in communications at Washington

12 Husky History 12 Washington Coaching History Edean Ihlanfeldt Jan Lanphere Lesley Hobert Mary Lou Mulflur 1983-present Edean Ihlanfeldt Edean Ihlanfeldt Edean Ihlanfeldt is the woman responsible for launching the women s golf team at Washington, and she never took a dime for the job she loved so much during her coaching career. When Washington expanded its athletic lineup to include women s sports, Kit Green hired Ihlanfeldt, one of the area s top players, to coach the Huskies. Armed with an envelope of names and addresses of women who signed up to play, she started the program in 1974 before retiring seven years later in 1981 at the age of 50. During her seven-year coaching career, Ihlanfeldt never accepted payment for her coaching duties. Instead, she donated her salary back for scholarships. Three of Ihlanfeldt s teams and five individuals qualified for the AIAW championships. During her tenure, Washington was the only Northwest team to qualify for the nationals. Ihlanfeldt was no stranger to championship golf. Her list of victories included five PNGA titles, six Montana State championships, three Washington State titles, four Seattle City championships, the Trans-Mississippi title and the Canadian Open Championship. She was the only player to win the Seattle City, Washington and PNGA tournaments in the same year. The Washington women s golf program named its fall golf invitational in her honor. 26 Husky History Dodie Mazzuca Heralded as the best player in Washington women s golf, Dodie Mazzuca was the first Husky to receive first-team All-America honors and compete in three different NCAA Championships. Mazzuca holds virtually every one of Washington s women s golf records. The 65 she shot in the third round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational as a senior was not only a school record but was also the lowest score by a women s golfer in the country for the season. In addition to winning the Ihlanfeldt Inviational, Mazzuca claimed two other medals during the season, including a win at the NCAA West Regional to help the Huskies advance to their second NCAA Championship as a team. Mazzuca made a strong contribution to the program in each of the four years that she played, having the best season stroke average at the conclusion of each season, the only Husky ever to accomplish that feat. She improved every season finishing with a school record hole stroke average at the end of her senior season. In addition to being named a first-team All-American, Mazzuca was recognized as a first-team All-Pac-10 player as a senior after being named to the second team as a junior. An economics student, She was also recognized for outstanding work in the classroom as an academic All-American and received the Eagle Hardware & Garden Academic Salute. Mazzuca s impact was felt immediately at Washington as she was the top finisher in two tournaments, including the Pac-10s. Mazzuca s sophomore year was a series of firsts. It was also the first time that a Husky team played in the NCAA Championship, and the first of three NCAA Championships for Mazzuca. 26 Washington s National Champion Judy Hoetmer Before there was a women s varsity golf program at the Univeristy of Washington, the school produced a national champion in the sport. In 1961 Judy Hoetmer won the National Collegiate Golf Championship. A junior at the time, Hoetmer was a member of the University s golf club from 1959 to She was the Pacific Northwest Junior Champion in both 1957 and As a senior at Washington, Hoetmer finished second at the NCGC. In 1988 Hoetmer was inducted into Washington s Hall of Fame. She is one of a handful of inductees who never earned a varsity letter at Washington. Nancy Kessler A four-year letterwin-ner from , Nancy Kessler was one of Washington s most successful golfers ever. Kessler played 109 career rounds for the Dawgs, averaging 79.3 strokes while winning two tournaments and finishing in the top-10 nine times. As a freshman, Kessler competed in 17 rounds, averaging 81.4 strokes per outing. Her best finish was at the Stanford Invitational where she finished 14th and recorded a season-low 73 in the process. In her sophomore season, Kessler came into her own, playing in all 30 of UW s rounds, while averaging 81.6 shots per 18 holes. Her best finish came at the US International Invitational, where she finished ninth, pacing the squad to a fourth-place finish. As a junior, Kessler played in the No. 1 position, again competing in all of Washington s competitive rounds while averaging 79.2 strokes. She had two top-10 finishes, including a second place at the Utah-Dixie Classic where she shot a four-over 223. The season was Kessler s most productive as she won two tournaments including UW s own Edean Ihlanfeldt. Kessler also won the BYU Invitational, where she shot an opening-round 69, her career low. For the year, Kessler finished in the top 10 in seven of 10 events. Kessler, now Nancy McDaniel, is the head coach at Cal. 27 Husky Home Courses Washington National Golf Club When Washington National Golf Course opened in August of 2000, it became the new home for the Husky Golf team. Thanks to a sponsorship agreement between Washington National and the University, the course features a distinctive Husky brand, from the golf carts, to flag sticks to its company logo. Washington National was the brainchild of Orrin Vincent, president of O.B. Sports, a golf development and management company. Vincent is the father of former Husky men s golf coach O.D. Vincent. A Seattle native, he teamed with John Fought, the 1977 U.S. Amateur champion and the principal architect for the project, to create a truly unique Northwest course. No two holes are alike and, thanks to the terrain in the area and excellent drainage, the course features numerous native areas and large artistic sand traps. Five sets of tees (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Husky) stretch the course from 5,117 yards to 7,304 yards. The golf carts are a combination of purple and gold and named for notable personalities in Washington athletic history. Other carts are named for the other Pac-10 schools. University faculty, staff and students are entitled to special discounted fees at Washington National. The course has been selected for the site of the 2002 NCAA Division I Women s Golf Championships and the 2003 NCAA Division I Men s Golf Regional. The 17th Green The theme at Washington National is all Huskies. From the personalized golf carts (above) to the special flag sticks and practice pins (right) to the Block W bunker on the 18th fairway, a Purple and Gold presence can be found throughout the course.
