4 Game Reports VIC COUNTRY 97 def. NORTHERN TERRITORY 53 Solid ball movement from Vic Country was the key to success in this contest although Zeb Hantelmann did his best to gain as many opportunities for NT, finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds. An ankle injury then depleted NT s stocks to make things even harder as Keith Robinson and Dyson Daniels combined for ten offensive boards while Ethan Fiegert top-scored with 23 points. WA COUNTRY 55 def. by ACT 65 Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the opening half and while ACT were able to jump out to a nine-point lead at one stage, they only managed a three-point edge at half-time. A scrappy second half seemed to suit ACT with Pyper Thornberry putting together 24 points and 16 rebounds on the way to victory while for WA Country, Adele East had 21 and eight. SA COUNTRY 67 def. NORTHERN TERRITORY 39 Molly Althouse got things started for NT in this one but SA Country s team performance was evident early on as they put together a run to give themselves a healthy lead. After half-time, NT s defence picked up and held their opponents to just 12 points in the third but they were never able to get close enough as Meg Butcher tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds while Emily Close had nine and nine. WA COUNTRY 56 def. ACT 43 An up-tempo start to this game saw both teams looking to get out in transition while they were also unafraid of using their benches. WA Country gained a buffer courtesy of some hot three-point shooting, knocking down four three-pointers in the space of five possessions but starting the third quarter, ACT went on a 15-2 answering run. WA Country would not give up their lead though with Shamus Trainor coming up clutch to seal the victory. NSW COUNTRY 56 def. by NSW METRO 58 The NSW rivalry heated up on Day 7 and the first quarter was a fast and intense affair. Both sides showed strong cohesion within their line-up but NSW Metro s shot selection proved the main difference as they went into half-time with a nine-point lead. Zac Simons again dominated the glass, pulling down 15 rebounds but a furious fourth term comeback from NSW Country tightened things up. Ryan Bath tied the scores with 40 seconds remaining but Sam Clemens held his nerve from the free-throw line to seal a big win for NSW Metro. GAME REPORTS Girls Semi Final NSW METRO 54 def. by VIC COUNTRY 60 An amazing atmosphere added to the intensity of this Semi-Final with the crowd extremely vocal and supportive of both clubs. Vic Country were intent on penetrating into the paint and forced NSW Metro to foul which meant Vic Country were able to take control from the free-throw line. Piper Dunlop and Karli Bruce were exceptional for the Vics while Jade Melbourne finished with seven points and 15 rebounds. However, NSW Metro would not go away quietly and Isabelle Morgan (23 points) was able to tie the game with 2:30 remaining. Carly Remmos (14 points) answered with a massive three-pointer though and Alisha Knights then sealed the win with some more clutch free-throw shooting to send Vic Country into the gold medal game. 5 Game Reports NSW COUNTRY 62 def. QUEENSLAND SOUTH 52 It was a back-and-forth affair in the first term but NSW Country gained some breathing room in the second period, pushing their lead out to six. Foul trouble created havoc for NSW Country as the game wound down though and Qld South were effective from the charity stripe to make things tight. In the end, Sara Matthews (20 points) and Olivia Barber (12 points, seven rebounds) were able to steady the ship for NSW Country. Boys Semi Final NEW ZEALAND 80 def. by QUEENSLAND SOUTH 87 NZ had showcased a strong long-range shooting game throughout this tournament and they shocked Qld South with six three s in the first term while turnovers were also an issue for Qld South at the other end of the court. They matched NZ s intensity in the second period and clawed their way back into the contest. Mac Stodart and Harrison Payne shone for NZ again with 21 points apiece but the all-round efforts of Riley Curtis (15 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists) and Blake Jones (17 points) saw Qld South win the second half and carry them into the gold medal game. WA METRO 72 def. by SA METRO 86 This was an incredibly physical game right from the tip with WA Metro asserting their dominance on the glass while SA Metro s defence restricted too many easy looks. Exhausted players found it difficult to finish at the rim after only a few minutes of the contest but SA Metro were able to raise the bar in the third term and push out to a double-digit lead. Roosevelt Williams had a blinder of a game finishing with 30 points but it was not enough as Kalani Sapwell shot 7-14 from long range to tally 25 points in the win. Girls Semi Final VIC METRO 63 def. SA METRO 43 The margin of this contest did not tell the whole story as SA Metro rued a slow start which gave Vic Metro all the momentum. They led by 15 points in the first quarter after a strong opening run but from there, SA Metro showcased their impressive defensive structures and held Vic Metro from getting too much further in front. Gemma Potter was a rebounding machine for Vic Metro with nine to lead all players while Casey Valenti-Paea top-scored with 14 points to answer the best efforts of SA Metro s Chloe Hodges who recorded ten points off the bench. WA METRO 78 def. NEW ZEALAND 57 This game was a back and forth battle in the first half but as the game got to half time, a hard knock to WA Metro s Tia Morgan saw the game stopped while she was treated. After an extended break, NZ came out firing and were able to take a convincing victory with four players scoring in double-figures while their defensive intensity proved too much for WA Metro to handle despite the impressive performances of Madison alone and Georgina Harding. GAME REPORTS Boys Semi Final VIC METRO 68 def. by QUEENSLAND NORTH 74 Vic Metro came into this Semi-Final undefeated while Qld North were aiming to join their intrastate rivals in the gold medal game. With it all to play for, both teams fought bravely throughout the contest but it was Tamuri Wigness who gave Qld North the early edge before he finished with 37 points, four assists and five steals. Vic Metro did not panic after trailing by four at the first break, answering with a second term and with the momentum, they looked like they might take the game away from their northern opponents. Qld North fought back with a third term of their own though as Boston Mazlin proved damaging but Vic Metro had one last run left in them, cutting the margin to just three points inside the final minute. However, Mitchell Wright was cool as you like from the free-throw line to seal the victory and ensure it would be an all-queensland gold medal game. For Vic Metro, Fraser Elliot had 17 points off the bench while Josh Woodford added 11.
