2 2007 Mountain West Tournament Notes March 6-10 Page 2 Head Coach Regina Miller Regina Miller has accomplished what she was brought to Las Vegas to do in 1998 to resurrect and build the Lady Rebels back into one of the nation s premier programs. She has also led to the postseason for a school record six straight seasons. She has led the Lady Rebels to the WNIT first round each of the past two seasons, Her team had one of the most successful campaigns in school history, as finished with a 26-8 record and advanced to its firstever appearance in the WNIT championship game. also set a new school record with 10 MWC wins. Miller guided the Lady Rebel squad to a mark and an appearance in the WNIT finally broke back into the national scene after the Lady Rebels outstanding season in , in which they earned their first NCAA Tournament berth since the 1994 season and their eighth all-time appearance. That year s squad posted a remarkable 23-8 overall record, one of the best seasons in school history, which also included a MWC tournament runner-up finish. In , the North Carolina native also guided her team to an impressive overall record and an appearance in the WNIT. The previous two years, Miller led to back-to-back 17-win seasons after inheriting a squad that had only won four games in each of the previous three years. She turned her squad into the most improved team in Division I women s college basketball in just her first year at. On Dec. 10, 2005, she reached a personal milestone by collecting her 200th career victory against Nevada, Reno. A victory over Colorado State on Feb. 18, 2006, marked her 150th win at, and her 153 wins entering the season is the third-most by a head coach. Miller came to after spending six seasons ( ) as the head coach at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. While at WIU, she led the Westerwinds to the 1995 Mid-Continent Conference regular season and tournament titles as well as an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For her efforts, she was honored as the 1995 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association s Coach of the Year. It will also be the third time has played in the 3-6 game, and it has won the previous two games, including last year s identical matchup of #3 New Mexico and #6. This is the third straight year, and fourth overall has been the lower seed in its quarterfinal matchup, and the Lady Rebels have won the last two, over #5 Wyoming in 2005 and over #6 New Mexico last year. For the first time since 2003, the MWC Tournament will be played in in s Thomas & Mack Center. The previous three years it was held in the Pepsi Center in Denver, and the Lady Rebels actually held a better record there (3-3,.500) as compared to (3-4,.429). Last year s tournament saw the Lady Rebels become the first-ever sixth seed to win a tournament game, as they upset third-seeded and 21st-ranked New Mexico 57-45, thanks to 15 points and 12 rebounds from Sherry McCracklin and a 15-1 run to end the game. Second-seeded Utah then stopped s run, as the eventual tournament champions and Elite Eight Utes held to just 29 percent in a loss in the semifinals. In the 2005 tournament, fifth-seeded took care of #4 Wyoming 64-59, helped by a 17-0 first half run, and a 16-point, 14-rebound double-double performance from RanDee Henry. In the semifinal game against third-seed New Mexico, the Lobos ended the game on a 13-4 run, and Sheena Moore s three-pointer at the buzzer was just off the mark in a loss. Players to watch As expected, junior guard/forward Sequoia Holmes has become the leader on the court, and turned in her best game ever at against Michigan (11/18), scoring a career-high 32 points against the Wolverines. The most athletic player in the MWC, Holmes is an outstanding all-around player who currently ranks fifth in the league in scoring (14.5 ppg) and is 59th in the nation in steals with 2.61 per game. She is also averaging 6.3 rebounds (12th in MWC) and 2.46 apg (13th). Hampton is second on the team in both scoring (12.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg) this year, and was third in the Mountain West in field goal percentage at 51.9%. She scored in double-figures a total of 15 games this season. Senior Night Success For the second straight year pulled off an upset on its Senior Night, and for the second straight year it was over their biggest rival, the New Mexico Lobos. This year the charge was led by an unexpected source, as Latosha Pace, who was one of five seniors honored after the game, scored 11 of her 14 points in the second half, and hit a career-high four three-pointers in the game. Also honored after the game was Tiffani Burries, Faye Muller, Shavonne Burks, and Kameca Simmons. Hunt makes dramatic impact in BYU win Freshman Latoya Hunt sat on the bench for the first 42 minutes of the game against BYU, but when Faye Muller was injuried while fouled on a play, Hunt came in and completely turned the fate of the game around to spark the Lady Rebel upset win, scoring the next five points of the game to turn a BYU advantage into a three-point lead. With down 68-65, Hunt took Muller s two free throws, and made the second to close the lead to two. Following a missed BYU trey, Hunt then scored on a layup to tie the game, stole the ball on the next Cougar possession, grabbed an offensive rebound, and scored again for her fifth straight point, and a two-point edge. Hunt then blocked BYU s next shot, and Kameca Simmons scored on a layup with 57 seconds left for a four-point Lady Rebel lead, Hunt finished with a career-high five points, two rebounds, a block and a steal in just three total minutes of action. The streaks are over broke several streaks on Wednesday night in the upset victory over BYU. The win broke the Lady Rebels four-game losing streak, their longest ever in MWC play and longest losing streak in head coach Regina Miller s nine years as head coach. The win was also the first over the Cougars since the season, as BYU had won the last five meetings, three games in Provo, and twice in. Another streak snapped was s recent fortunes in overtime. The past two seasons played in overtime once, and lost both contests, the first at home to Iowa State, on Dec. 18, The second loss was at TCU in the regular season finale, an loss. Sophomore power After basically spending last season as understudies to Sheena Moore and Sherry McCracklin, sophomores Shamela Hampton and Brittany Halberg come into their own this season and made a big impact on the Lady Rebel squad. The two combined for 42 total points as freshmen, almost the same as they scored in the upset win over #20 DePaul win alone (37 points) on Dec. 28. Halberg finished the game with a career-high 21 points. She has scored in double figures eight times this season, ranks third on the team with 8.2 ppg, and leads with 2.86 apg. Hampton added 16 points, and finished her season second on the team with 12.0 ppg. She was also third in the MWC in field goal percentage at 51.9%. Double-double time The Lady Rebels lost to TCU despite three players recording double-doubles in the same game for just the second time in the last eight years, and first since a win over Canisius on Jan. 2, Sequoia Holmes led with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Shamela Hampton posted 15 points, 12 rebounds, and Faye Muller registered 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. The three players helped outrebound TCU 50-28, after being outrebounded by nine in the first meeting.

A game of record (lows) The -Utah game on Jan. 13 set several new school records, all of which the Lady Rebels would have liked to avoid. The loss marked the lowest points ever scored combined by both teams in a game (86), while the halftime score of was also the lowest ever combined score in a half in a contest. The Lady Rebels also shot just 19.6% (10-of-51) from the floor, very close to the school record for lowest field goal percentage in a game, 19.1% (13-of-68), set in a loss at Rice on Jan. 14, The 18 points scored by in the first half was the lowest in five years for a Lady Rebel squad, with the school record being 14 at Nevada, Reno on Dec. 14, meanwhile held Utah to just 11 points in the half, lowest by an opponent in five years. The school record for lowest points in a half by an opponent is seven, by Northern Arizona on Dec. 27, Impressive defense The Lady Rebels played one of their best defensive games of the season on Jan. 11, as Wyoming was held to its lowest point total of the season (46), lowest points in the half this year (20 in the first), lowest field goal percentage (33.3%), and lowest three-point percentage (17.2%). also held a edge on the boards, including 11-3 on the offensive side in the second half. Another 30-point outburst sophomore center Shamela Hampton became the second Lady Rebel to score 30 points in a game this year, after scoring a career-high 30 on 11-of-13 shooting from the floor in a win over Nevada, Reno on Dec. 30 in. Junior foward Sequoia Holmes is the other player, as she scorched Michigan for 32 points on Nov. 18. Holmes scored the first seven points of the game and finished hitting 13-of-23 from the floor while playing the entire 40 minutes. Winning at the line One big key in the win over DePaul was perhaps the most surprising development of the night. entered the game last in the conference in free throw shooting, and in fact, in the last NCAA statistics release on Dec. 17, was 322nd of 324 teams in the nation. None of that mattered against DePaul however. simply connected on 27-of-33 from the free throw line for a season-high 81.8%, including making eight straight to begin the game. Brittany Halberg actually made her first 11 attempts, and would have tied the school record had she not missed her 12th and final attempt. Ranking the win With the upset of the 19th-ranked DePaul Blue Demons, the Lady Rebels are now 3-1 in their last four games against a top-25 team. At the end of last season, pulled off two wins over No. 21 New Mexico in just a week s span, first a win in on March 2, before shutting down the Lobos in the MWC Tournament quarterfinals on March 8 in Denver. It is also the fifth win over a ranked team in head coach Regina Miller s nine-years at, but easily by the largest margin. Simmons makes her return After missing the first seven games of the year after breaking her arm in the preseason, senior guard Kameca Simmons returned to the court on Dec. 19 against UC Irvine, and made an immediate impact, as she scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting coming off the bench. Second half rally For the first time in over four years, rallied to win a game after trailing by double-digits at halftime with its win over Cal State Bakersfield. The Roadrunners held a halftime advantage, but the Lady Rebels outscored CSUB over the final 14 minutes to earn the victory. The last time trailed by double digits at halftime and came back to win was on Nov. 29, San Diego held a halftime lead, but a 17-0 run in the second half carried to a victory. That win over San Diego was also the last time trailed by 14 or more before rallying for a win, as the Lady Rebels were down by 16 in the win over CSUB in the first half.
