1 Welcome to the Juanita Girls Basketball Club 2015/2016 Season

2 Mission The mission of Juanita Girls Basketball Club is to provide Juanita High School with the most capable and best prepared student-athletes possible. To do this JGBC will create a place where players have a positive atmosphere that young athletes who want to be better basketball players have the opportunity to get better. We exist to make a positive difference in the lives of our players. Our goal is to develop fundamentally sound, happy, healthy, confident and aggressive players. Purpose The Juanita Girls Basketball Association (JGBC) has a commitment to our community, teamwork, and character. JGBC is a Select program designed to provide a competitive outlet for the skilled and motivated 4 th grade thru 8 th grade players that intend to play High School basketball at Juanita. Organization The JGBC is a private non-profit organization, governed by a Board of Directors (Board) and it s Director. Relationship to other Leagues JGBC is a member of the Puget Sound Traveling League (PSTL) and the Cascade Travel League. Both leagues adhere to the WIAA rules and regulations. Though JGBC may participate in activities of other leagues, it is not legally affiliated with any of those leagues. Participation in any and all activities, both within and outside of PSTL and CTL, is allowed only if approved by the JGBC Executive Board. Under no circumstances will coaches, team coordinators or any other party, commit JGBC or its resources without prior approval of the club Director. Participation in JGBC The opportunity to participate in this organization is open to all who desire to play competitive basketball at Juanita High School. A limited number of openings is made available each year and player candidates are selected by the coaches at each JGBC grade level, and as affirmed by the voting Board. An opening is secured for a player candidate once an offer has been extended, that player has read and signed the Player agreement, completed and submitted other necessary forms, and paid in full his player fee by the Acceptance Deadline.

3 Player Fees, Documentation and Acceptance Deadline The player fees for the 2015/2016 are $450. All fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. This is based on plans for the coming year and existing financial reserves. Player fees shall be payable in full, (unless submittal of an in kind scholarship) and all required documentation completed and submitted by the Acceptance Deadline, which is two (2) weeks from the date the offer has been extended. If the payment in full has not been made, or completed documents have not been submitted, THE PLAYER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN TOURNAMENTS OR GAMES. The team fee s pay for gym usage, coaches stipend, organization insurance, equipment, tournament budget (increased this year), a shooting t shirt, and league fees. Playing Up Players may play at grade level, or one level up. Coaches are expected to evaluate and select players based on athletic potential and the athletes ability to compete, irrespective of grade or grade+1 status. Fees and Funding The annual fee is due by the Acceptance Deadline, and must be paid on-line or given to Lori Huff. Again, all fees are non-refundable once you have accepted the invitation to play. It is the responsibility of the player to ensure payment is received in a timely fashion by JGBC. Additionally, each team may elect to participate in additional tournaments and leagues, providing the Director have approved the tournament or league. Financial scholarships are available based on need. Financial scholarships are obtained by submitting a completed application to the JGBC Treasurer, who will gain the decision from the Executive Board members. Other hardship circumstances will be granted by the Executive Board on a case-by-case basis. Consistent with its community-based mission, JGBC conducts fundraisers in order to provide financial support to the basketball program in order to keep costs as reasonable as possible. If possible any additional monies will either be donated to the girl s basketball programs in schools it serves. Additionally monies may be returned to the parents at the discretion of the Executive Board. Actual amounts and recipients are determined each year by the Executive Board, based on needs of the JGBC program and funding outcomes from any fundraisers carried out by the JGBC during the season.

4 Service Commitment Requirement JGBC fees are set based on the presumption of certain level of volunteerism and the fulfillment of certain roles by team volunteers. We also believe that our youth appreciate their opportunity with a team when they and their families share in the burden in bringing this opportunity to them. In accepting a slot with JGBC, the player and the family/guardian of the player agrees to contribute a minimum of 15 hours through the season. Duties for any fundraiser are assigned to each team by the Event Coordinator (Black Uncle Sam). The players families/guardians are also expected to fill other important team roles that have traditionally been filled by volunteers. Scholarships that have been offered are in-kind, based on financial need. Scholarship recipients must provide additional volunteer time in exchange for fees, as agreed in the approved scholarship application. Uniforms, AAU Cards, and Equipment Uniforms and AAU Cards are not included in the fees paid to the program and will be the responsibility of the parents. Our new club code is WWAB3E. Please purchase your child s AAU card ASAP or she may not be allowed to play in the first tournament. Player expectations Winter is basketball season. JGBC is a Select program. Players who have been granted a roster position with JGBC are expected to prioritize basketball during the winter season. When participating in any team event, players are expected to offer full attention and give full effort. Any player that is invited and agrees to participate in the program is expected to be present at all practices and games unless the coach has been notified in advance. The player is to arrive to practice 10 minutes early and a minimum of 30 minutes before game time. Players and parents are expected to represent JGBC favorably at all times. Players are expected to be polite and courteous to officials, coaches, parents, volunteers and other players at all times. Any player ejected from a game will be ineligible to play in the next game, and may be subject to further disciplinary action at the discretion of the Board. Parent Expectations Family members will not coach from the stands. This confuses the players. It is important for the player to learn at the earliest age possible that the one voice they hear is the coaches voice.

5 Issues can be reasonably discussed with coaches, before or after practices, but not before, at or after games. Please give your coach and program director 24 hours after your game before you address concerns with them. Issues, which are not easily and respectfully resolved with the coach, must be presented to the Board. JGBC loves spirited fans. All family members are expected to represent JGBC favorably at all times. They are expected to be polite and courteous to officials, coaches, other parents, volunteers and players. Families are required to cheer for the entire team, not just their own player. Practices will occur each week depending on the season, gym availability, and coach preference. Most practices will be scheduled adequately in advance and communicated to parents in a timely manner. Some practices may be scheduled on short notice if beneficial to the team, and as determined by the Coach. At the beginning of each year, the coach will discuss with the parents the preferred method for communicating short notice events. Some practice may be cancelled on short notice. This is dependant upon the schools where JGBC practices. Every attempt will be made to inform the parents prior to arrival at the gym but due to the schools notification process the coaches and the programs may not receive notification in time to inform the parents. Can my parents watch practice? JGBC has open practices and we encourage the parents to be present during the practices for the younger players. It is not obligatory that parents remain at practice however there are some guidelines that must be adhered to during practice: 1. Have your player prepared and ready 10 minutes before practice. This is important as practice time is limited and any delay in starting practice hurts all players. 2. Ensure that your player has plenty of fluids to drink during practice. The players will be working very hard and hydration is important to the well being of the player. 3. Do not coach from the sidelines. This is important during practice but is especially Important during the games. Please note that you do not want to be a distracting to both players and coaches. Any distraction impedes the higher level of intensity, concentration and willingness to perform that is needed at the Select level.

6 Coach Expectations All coaches will be required to participate in periodic coaching clinics sponsored by the JGBC Board and Juanita High School coaching staff. Our intention is that all JGBC Coaches become familiar with the JHS system and that they develop practice and game strategies consistent with direction from the JHS Varsity Head Coach. JGBC coaches are encouraged to meet periodically during the season to insure we are achieving the best alignment between JGBC and JHS, and achieving the best skills development possible for the season. As with players, there is no entitlement for Coaches in the program. The Board will approve the selection of each Coach at the beginning of each season. Every Coach must have a current Washington State Patrol check, to be renewed every year of participation in the JGBC program. Because available gym time for practices tends to be scarce, and games are typically scheduled back-to-back with little time between games/practices Coaches are expected to arrive at practices and games prior to their players and be ready to coach when the first player arrives. The program expects Coaches to have a solid understanding of basketball fundamentals, competitive coaching experience, and the ability to instruct the athletes and enhance their understanding of the game and performance. We discourage parents from coaching any team that includes their daughter; exceptions will be made solely at the discretion of the Executive Board and reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Coaches are expected to represent JGBC favorably at all times. League Play 4th through 8th grade levels participate in the PSTL season December through March. 9 th grade players will participate in tournaments or a league dependant upon what the Board and Coach thinks will provide the best level of competition. Tournaments and Clinics We believe tournaments provide an exciting opportunity for the players to be challenged and improve their skills without affecting their regular season win/loss record. They learn the techniques and strategies of other teams and meet other players outside of their in-season competition. Each JGBC team will participate in pre-season and in-season tournaments. JGBC will also be offering tournaments and clinics during the off- season to keep the players sharp and engaged in the game of basketball. Where roster players are not able to participate, Coaches may fill open slots with other candidates that meet the JGBC criteria. Off-season tournaments and clinics may require incremental fees to be paid by participants.

7 Playing Time Playing time is at the discretion of each Coach. Our goal is to have each player play at least 2 minutes in each quarter. Skill, attitude, attendance, and other factors may be considered in the Coach s decisions about playing time. Complaints and Disputes Communication between player and coach is very important. If a complaint arises, every effort should be made to communicate with the coach and player to resolve the dispute. In the event that resolution does not occur with the Coach, the complaint should be directed to the JGBC Executive Board, who will work with the coach, parent and others as appropriate to resolve the matter. Termination Termination is the prerogative of the Board. A Player may be removed from the program for reasons of substance abuse, not maintaining minimum acceptable academic GPA as set forth by JHS, or if a family member adversely affects the team and/or repeatedly violates principles of good conduct and sportsmanship as determined by the Executive Board. Coaches are subject to termination from the program for any behavior deemed inappropriate by the Board or by not complying with the Bylaws. A Parent or family member may be asked not to attend games if unacceptable behavior is demonstrated, or for not adhering to the By-laws. Amendments These By-Laws may be altered, amended, repealed or added to by an affirmative vote of not less than 66% of the voting members. Program Waivers Players from other programs may petition to play for JGBC. The player will need board approval for acceptance into JGBC, a written release from their feeder program, and there must be a vacancy on a team in order for a non Juanita player to be considered.

8 Juanita Girls Basketball Club Parent/Guardian Contract Please initial at each correct spot. By initialing you are agreeing that you completely understand and agree to each statement and contract agreement that precedes your initials. **Please read everything you are signing so that there is no confusion** I understand that there is a Non-Refundable Team fee per season. The fee goes to pay for leagues, tournaments, and our coach. There is no refund on this one time seasonal Team Fee. I understand that we need to purchase our uniform and AAU card. I understand that if I do not meet the obligations defined in the paragraphs above my athlete will not be able to participate in team practice or team events. I understand that all leagues and tournaments held outside of the Juanita program are out of JGBC s control. Such as game times, gym locations, and cancellation of the league and tournament. Game times, gym locations and cancellations will be communicated to all parents as soon as possible. I understand that communications with the team will be done through /web site, and texting if I choose. It is the parent s responsibility to check /web, and or text on a regular basis.

9 I understand that I am required to spend time volunteering to help raise money for the program. I understand that I am required to volunteer in at least 4 shifts for the end of the year tournament in March of I understand that I will be required to sign-up for my shifts before the MLK tournament. If I do not sign up for my end of the season tournament shift before the MLK tournament, my child will not be allowed to play until I sign up for my shifts. The board understands if your schedule changes, but this is our largest fundraiser and we do not want to have to beg you to give back to your daughters program. This allows us to keep our fees below $600. I acknowledge that I have received, read and discussed with my athlete the information in the Player/Parent handbook. I understand all of the policies as outlined in the handbook and agree to abide by the rules of the JGBC: A player may not begin his/her season with JGBC Team until all required forms are signed and submitted to the JGBC. The forms include: Handbook Acceptance, Waiver and Medical Release, AAU card, code of conduct, and financial Responsibility.
