Zach Randolph is the whole key to this team offensively. They will give him long looks in the post waiting for him to get position and will often force the ball to him and turn it over. They look for him in the post every possession he is in the game, he is always first option and he is DEFINITELY looking to shoot when he gets it. He is not a passer.. They are a very young team especially on the perimeter. They go through stretches of poor decisionmaking and uncertainty. They are not a very good executing team and can be taken out of their sets with good pressure and denials.. Their confidence is high right now after coming back to beat Seattle after being down and looking like they were out of it. They played with a lot of energy and togetherness down the stretch and got the come from behind victory Their young players led them to the win.. We have to be ready for a lot of PNR's. They ran PNR constantly down the stretch in their come from behind win against Seattle with Roy handling mainly. Throughout the pre-season they ran many more PNR's than sets when Randolph wasn't in the game. Stats of Note. They ranked nd in FG% 9% in pre-season. They were 6th in points allowed. They averaged only 67 shot attempts per game 6. They were 8th in FG% allowed. They averaged 6 Fast Break points per game 7. They gave up points per game in the paint. 2 PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS GAME # OF GAME # NOVEMBER, 006 OFFENSIVE NOTES We have to do a great job of defending Randolph. Make him work for position every time and show him different defensive coverage's. We need to be aggressive in trying to make him take tough shots or getting the ball out of his hands. He is a very reluctant passer and will force shots against good defense. They look to get the ball to him in Early Post ups, Elbow Iso's, and PNR's. They will run a lot of PNR's. They ran a ton of PNR's against Seattle and it was their go to play down the stretch. Either Drag action or our Thumb Up /. They will especially do this a lot once LaFrentz enters the game looking for pick-n-pop. When Roy is at the point he will also run a lot of pnr looking to get into the paint and make a play. Przybilla is also constantly looking to set ball screens in the half court. We have to be ready for screen/re-screen action! Seattle showed some full court pressure and it worked against them. They couldn't get organized in the half court when they were working against a short clock. It took them out of their sets, they ran Mid PNR after the pressure. Roy was very impressive against Seattle! Ran PNR and made plays when they needed it as if he were a 0 year veteran. We have to bring a good defensive effort against him. They went small late in the game vs. Seattle with a lineup of Jack, Dixon, Roy, Udoka and Randolph. Looked to spread the floor and run Mid pnr. They got off to a slow start against Seattle but settled down when they came with their second unit which is has more veterans and is more experienced. Dixon, Magloire and LaFrentz got them settled down and back in the game. We have to get to Dixon and LaFrentz at the -point line, everyone else we need to contain off the dribble and make them prove their jump shot. Webster is capable of making deep 's but is inconsistent right now. They are playing a very controlled slow paced style thru the pre-season. They are only averaging 67 shot attempts per game and averaged only 6 Fast Break points per game. They want to play slow and let Randolph get his touches on each possession. DEFENSIVE NOTES Low Post: Bigs will play behind and look to block shots. Randolph will not make you work for position. Smalls will "White" the post vs. drop action and on mismatches. Guards look to dig from the perimeter on post feed to big. Pick & Roll: They will switch a lot of pnr's when LaFrentz or Outlaw is involved as the big. o Side They will use our "" vs wing pnr's. The call is: o Mid: They will try to "" mid pnr's. The call is: WEAK o Elbow: They will Let Thru/Contain vs. our Horns action Pindowns: They will switch,,'s and when Outlaw is the man they will switch with him to. Zone Defense: They will play some - match-up zone. The call is: They will play some - match-up zone. The call is: Press Defense: They will sometimes pick up full court with the point but that is all the F/C pressure I have seen. They are a big switching team. They will switch most,, screens and 's if it is Outlaw or LaFrentz. They will go to a "Stopper" if they get into a mis-match situation on the wing. All of their Bigs can be beaten off the dribble from the perimeter. Look to attack their feet. We have to remain active off the ball after the ball goes into the post to K.G. They got caught time after time vs. the Clippers on basket cuts for lay-ups after post feeds. We will see some zone defense at some point. They like to change the pace of the game by playing some zone and will stick with it as long as it is working. They are a poor transition defense team. Seattle had fast break points against them. Their bigs don't get back well. Page

4 PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS GAME # OF GAME # NOVEMBER, 006 PERSONNEL #0 Joel Przybilla Center 7 Defensive minded big man who is an excellent shot blocker. Good Low post defender. Always looking to set ball screens in their half court offense. Offensive rebounder. Scores on dunks and put-backs, very limited range. Prefers to turn to right shoulder on either block. Terrible Free Throw shooter! No easy baskets! # Jamaal Magloire Center 6 6 Veteran big who will play physical. Likes the left block. Will face up and drive baseline or middle, likes to dribble into hook shot across the lane. Will turn over left shoulder on back down from either block. He is an excellent offensive rebounder. Can be beaten off of dribble penetration and will foul on moves to the basket. #0 Zach Randolph Power Forward Left-Handed excellent Low Post player. He has great touch around the basket. Their main option offensively, prefers to post on right block. Has a variety of moves, loves to shoot jump hook coming to his right shoulder and high arc turnaround to his left shoulder. Refuses to pass out of the post! Definitely wants to get shot off and will force some bad shots. Will face up and jab step then shoot jumper when catching off the block, good shooter out to 0 feet. Good rebounder on both ends, Great offensive rebounder. Doesn't want to work on defensive end. #9 Raef LaFrentz Power Forward 6 Left-Handed Big who runs the floor well. Always looking to set Drag action Screens and shoot trail 's in transition He is always a pick-n-pop guy looking to pop to point line for shot. He is involved in a lot of screen/re-screen action. Occasionally pump fakes and drives left. In post likes turn and face for shot or lefty jump hook. Works on D but can be driven to basket. # Travis Outlaw Forward 6 9 Young athletic combo-forward. Runs the floor hard in transition looking for easy baskets. Improving shooting range out to 9 feet. Will catch and drive to his right looking to get to the basket and make athletic finish. Very active in passing lanes on defense. Has trouble physically defending 's in the post. # Stephen Graham Forward 6 6 Aggressive versatile wing who will play the or for them. Hard worker. Can make shots out to about 7 feet. Likes to pump fake defender on the perimeter and drive right for pull up. Good defender. # Ime Udoka Forward 6 0 Hard working player who has earned starting spot with hard play and defense. Gets them extra possessions with hustle. Knows his role is to defend and play hard. Decent spot up point shooter when his feet are set. Wants to drive right on penetration. Plays in passing lanes on defensive end. #8 Martell Webster Guard Good sized young player who is an excellent shooter with deep range. Much better as a catch and shoot player. Offensive minded, will force shots. Mostly right handed drives to the basket. Can be driven to the basket from the perimeter, attack his feet and stay active off the ball against him. #7 Brandon Roy Guard Rookie who is well polished offensively. Can score going to the basket off pnr's and dribble penetration. Great finish in the lane. He will run a lot of PNR's wants to go right then use crossover to get into lane. Great change of pace dribble. He will shoot point shot but we would prefer that at this point. He is much better getting to the basket and making plays. Good effort on defensive end, can be back cut on weak side. # Juan Dixon Guard 6'" 6 Plays the veteran guard role for them. Provides scoring spark off the bench. Solid -point range and creative scorer. Can catch and shoot or put the ball on the floor, doesn't look to get all the way to the rim, will stop and shoot pull-up. Run him off screens on the defensive end. # Dan Dickau Guard Backup point guard. Good shooter with point range. Can penetrate either way but looking to pass, can't finish in the paint. Will shoot pull up jumper off dribble. Go at him and attack his feet on offense. Get him in pnr's. # Jarrett Jack Guard 6'" 97 Young point guard who looks to create with dribble penetration and get others involved. Wants to penetrate right and shoot runner in the lane. Be ready for late pass to teammates on penetration. Not a consistent perimeter shooter, play him for the drive first, but he is capable of making point shot. Solid defender, uses his strength and size to bully guards. # Sergio Rodriguez Guard 6'" 68 Rookie guard. Very creative passer and ball handler. Good shooter. Likes to make the spectacular pass and great play. High turnover player, can be pressured into poor decisions. Go at him defensively. Page
