By reaching career wins with the club in 5 games, he became the fastest Lions head coach to reach career wins since Head Coach Buddy Parker, who recorded wins in 4 games (95-54). His overall record with the Lions stands at -5 (.569). Beginning his football coaching career in 977 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Iowa, 7 marks Caldwell's 4th consecutive season coaching football. CLUB With a 4-7 win over Minnesota in Week 4 of the 7 season, Caldwell logged his 56th overall win in his th career regular season game. His career record as a head coach (-5 in DET; 6- in IND) now stands at (.557) in 6 career games. LIONS FINISH 9-7 IN 6, EARN PLAYOFF BERTH The Lions finished the 6 season with a record of 9-7 and earned the team s second playoff berth in the past three seasons. The last time the Lions made the playoffs twice in a three-year span was 997 and 999. ¾By earning a playoff berth in 6, Caldwell joins Buddy Parker (95, 95) and Bobby Ross (997, 999) as the only coaches in Lions history to lead the team to the playoffs twice in their first three seasons with the club. EIGHT COMEBACK WINS IN 6 The Lions finished the 6 season with a record of 9-7. In eight of the team's nine wins, the Lions trailed in the fourth quarter and went on to win the game. Detroit set a new NFL record, surpassing the previous total of seven set by the 9 Indianapolis Colts (also coached by Jim Caldwell), for the most wins in a season after trailing in the fourth quarter. CALDWELL S FOURTH SEASON IN DETROIT JIM CALDWELL Head Coach Years with Lions: 4 Years as NFL Head Coach: 7 Years in NFL: 7 COACHING OVERVIEW ¾Hired as head coach for the Detroit Lions January 4, 4. ¾In 6 previous NFL seasons, Caldwell has worked on coaching staffs that have led teams to winning seasons and only twice finished below.5. 3 BOB QUINN Executive Vice President and General Manager Years with Lions: Years in NFL: 8 QUINN MAKES HIS MARK FIRST SEASON AT THE HELM Quinn s first season in the role of a franchise s top football executive culminated in a playoff appearance, and he became the only first-year executive among nine in the NFL to accomplish this feat since the season. In doing so, Quinn also became the Lions first general manager to guide the team to the playoffs in his inaugural season since Nick Kerbawy in 95. ¾Along with the nearly 4-percent changeover and upgrade to the team s roster that he inherited, Quinn s changes paid dividends in 6 when the Lions finished 9-7 on the team s way to the playoffs. ¾Entering his second season, Quinn s ongoing commitment to improve all aspects of the club s football operations has included restructuring the player personnel department and scouting evaluation processes; renovating the team s weight room and practice fields along with other facility improvements; upgrading the team s football information and video technology; and instituting a comprehensive nutritional program, which included the hiring of a performance dietician for the players. DRAFTING EXPERTISE Quinn's initial draft class in 6 featured the selection of six linemen on offense and defense, the most linemen in a Lions draft since 989 and the most ever in a seven-round draft. Highlighting last year s draft class was the Lions first-round selection T Taylor Decker, who earned all-rookie honors in 6. Additionally, DT A Shawn Robinson and C/G Graham Glasgow would earn starting roles during their rookie seasons. ¾Of the playoff teams in 6, no team had members of its draft class play more games (8) than the Detroit Lions. PATRIOTS PAST During his time with New England, Quinn served a number of roles in the player personnel department, including most recently as Director of Pro Scouting from -5. While he worked as Director of Pro Scouting, the Patriots won the 4 Super Bowl and four-straight AFC East Division championships. ¾From 9-, Quinn was the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel. For the previous nine years, Quinn worked in several different capacities within the Patriots player personnel department, including roles in college scouting as a National Scout and Regional Scout. He played an integral role in evaluating and procuring talent for the team through the NFL draft process, free agency, trades, etc. ¾While working for the New England Patriots, he helped contribute to one of the most impressive stretches in NFL history, one that produced four Super Bowl titles, including the most recent championship in 4 (Super Bowl XLIX). Since, Quinn s first year with New England, the Patriots have won six AFC Championships, AFC East titles, + games in a season times (which includes the past six years) and + games in 4 of his 6 seasons. 5 The following are post-game quote sheets from the Lions' 7-4 win over Chicago in Week at Soldier Field. HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL On what sort of weapon K Matt Prater has been for the team this year: He s incredible. I mean you look at even through the years here, we ve come from behind on a number of different games and had to win them at the end, and he s been a huge part of that. So, there s no question about that of what he provides for us in terms of getting ourselves in relatively good position to give him a chance, he s usually come through for us. On how his team dug itself out of an early hole and was able to win a division game on the road: Yeah, I like the fight that we have in us, obviously. I think we all recognize the fact that we certainly put ourselves in that position. But I liked the way we come out of it. Often times, particularly on the road, some teams take a nose dive when they get behind and don t come back. But our guys did a nice job and moving ourselves back in a position, making some plays, and giving us a chance to win. So, proud of that. We got a lot of young guys playing for us too. I looked out there on the field one time and I saw just so many youthful guys running around, but they re learning, they re developing. They know how to win. On how QB Matthew Stafford directed the final drive at the end of the half and how important it was to get ahead: Yeah, it was crucial. He ate up the clock and got us in position to score which was very good. Just in terms of clock management and those kinds of things, he has a real good understanding of what we need to get done." On how opportunistic the defense has been in terms of defensive touchdowns: Yeah, I think we ve been great. It s one of the things that we just harp on is balls on the ground and scooping them up regardless of the situation and trying to find a way to run with it. So, our guys have been working at it. They do it with Often times it s sometimes difficult to get like Nevin s (Lawson) last week was difficult to get up off the ground and get to that one. DJ (Hayden) did a nice job scooping that thing up and rolling with it. So, they re doing a good job. WHAT THEY SAID QUARTERBACK MATTHEW STAFFORD On what it meant to go on the road and get another division win: Obviously, we want to start the game with a bunch of points and a bunch of stops on defense, and sometimes it doesn t happen that way. But we re a resilient group. Obviously, DJ Hayden made a big time play for us early, kind of gave us a little bit of a spark. And then we were able to put a nice little first half together on offense after that. Second half s a struggle, man. That s a good defense we re facing. That s a good football team. They got a lot of talent, a lot of young talent. So, we ll have a bunch of stuff to clean up. Short week to do it, but it s nice to go on the road in the division and get a win. On what the biggest difference was in the second quarter compared to the first: Just hit some plays, you know. Just, I threw it, they caught it and we made some plays. So, I mean that s what it boils down to. I mean, there s no secret formula to this thing, we go out there and execute, we put up points. If we don t execute, then we don t. On how he would describe what the team is able to do in the fourth quarter: I think we re a confident group no matter what time of the game it is. Fourth quarter, first quarter, doesn t matter. We got out there and just try to play as good of football as we can. I ve got confidence in the fourth quarter, the guys around me I think they ve got confidence in me and we all as a team just feel like we re going to make the plays to win a game. Doesn t always happen that way, but more often than not when you re feeling that way and you re playing that way it does. CORNERBACK DJ HAYDEN On the impact of his fumble return for a touchdown: It was big because our team kind of started out slow today. It kind of got a spark going and we started playing pretty well after that. On how big the returns for touchdowns have been for the team this year: I mean, it s great for the team. It s great for the team, especially when we just need like a real spark. And then when the defense gets a touchdown, that s going to spark the whole team, it s going to spark the fans and will give us a lot of momentum. And the more we get the better. I hope we get a lot more. On why he thinks the defense has been so successful returning turnovers for touchdowns: We just make the best of the opportunities that are given to us, you know. When they give them, we re going to take full advantage of them. We don t miss out on too many." WEEKLY RELEASE

6 WHAT THEY SAID RUNNING BACK AMEER ABDULLAH On how important it was to sweep the division on the road: Very important, because at home we feel like we got an advantage with the crowd and just being used to Ford Field. So, winning at home is going to be important. On how important the three-game win streak is heading into Thanksgiving: It s important because it gives us a lot more confidence, every single week. Especially to go through a game like where it s a lot of ups and downs and thriller kind of at the end. We kind of see every facet that the NFL brings. And heading into the last six games, we definitely need to show exactly what we marked up this year. Winning big sometimes, winning close sometimes. CORNERBACK DARIUS SLAY On if his hands feeling like stone due to the weather was part of the reason he dropped the interception at the end: No, no part, because I tried to catch it with my chest. So, no part of that, but I just dropped it man. So, I wish they had the JUGS machine on our plane so I could catch it right now, but we don t. So, I m going to have to get that right. I don t like that, I don t like that. I can t do that. On what the defense needs to improve on to beat Minnesota: We got to spot the run. There s no question about it, they had over yards rushing in the first half, unacceptable. So, we got to fix that because we know Minnesota s going to do the same thing. They re aggressive, they got a great defense. So, they re going to play off their defense, so I know we got to play hard and make sure we get our offense a lot of opportunities to run the score up. So, we got to stop that run." KICKER MATT PRATER On if field goals mean more to him when they are at the end of the game and are from long distance: No. I try taking the same approach for every kick, whether it s the first quarter or a last-second kick. But I ve just been fortunate to have a great snapper and holder with Sam and Mule. That s why I think had a lot of success at longer kicks, because the further out you go, the less percentages you have unless the snap and hold's perfect obviously, and they ve done a great job with it for the last few years. On the degree of difficulty of his game-winning field goal at Chicago: It was pretty difficult just with the wind gusting. Couldn t really tell what it was doing and good thing I had Sam kind of caddy me, he said, Play it at the left upright.' And then I think he was almost jumping on me and I kind of lost it, I don t know. I started yelling at the coach box maybe. I don t know, but it was fun. 7 LIONS PRONUNCIATION GUIDE Active Roster Only Player Ameer Abdullah Ezekiel Ansah Jarrad Davis Quandre Diggs Eric Ebron Kasim Edabali Tion Green Miles Killebrew Brian Mihalik Don Muhlbach Glover Quin Jake Rudock A'Shawn Robinson Teez Tabor Khyri Thornton Jeremiah Valoaga Tahir Whitehead Paul Worrilow Anthony Zettel Pronunciation ab-doo-lah ZEEK-e-all AHN-sa JARED KWAN-dray EE-bron ka-sim Ed-ah-BAHL-ee TEE-on KILLA-brew mah-hahl-ick MULE-bach GLOW-ver ROO-dock AY-shawn TEASE TAY-ber KYE-ree VAL-oh-AH-ga TIE-eer WOR-ih-LOW ZEDDLE 7 LIONS COACHING STAFF NAME POSITION YEARS WITH LIONS/NFL Jim Caldwell Head Coach 4/7 Teryl Austin Defensive Coordinator 4/4 Jim Bob Cooter Offensive Coordinator 4/9 Joe Marciano Special Teams Coordinator / Ron Prince Asst. 8 THE NEW FORD FIELD The Lions announced in February 7 that the Ford Family is investing approximately $ million into Ford Field for new video boards and several other renovations to be completed for the 7 Detroit Lions season. After 5 years, we still hear what a great venue Ford Field is from our fans, visiting teams and the great acts that have performed here, said Detroit Lions Team President Rod Wood. The Ford Family is making a substantial investment to make sure our stadium remains among the best, but ultimately it s still about winning football games. We want to get fans in the building having a great time and excited about what they re experiencing so that they can continue to help us create a home field advantage. VIDEO BOARDS In each end zone, the Daktronics main video displays are more than twice the size of the current displays and measure 9.5 feet high by 5 feet wide. Flanking the main displays will be four additional displays measuring feet high by 59 feet wide that can be used individually or coordinated with the main displays for one continuous 7-foot presentation to show live video, instant replays, statistics, graphics and animations, and sponsorship messages. GRIDIRON CLUB The Gridiron Club capitalizes on Detroit s growing culinary recognition and the social scene that parallels it. Food takes center stage in this club, by the addition of several new Detroit-centric concessions manned by new local culinary sensations. Surrounding these unique concessions will be a lively dining and bar environment that has multiple large screen TV s. The highlight of this lively space is the unique lighting grid structure that hovers over all the club patrons that is a visual connection to the cooking grid iron that similarly hovers over the flames at these new culinary destinations. THE CORNER BAR Inspired by the memory of when the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers played on the same field, in the same stadium, and at the same CORNER. This new bar will highlight the special and unique Lions moments that have been captured in the memories by the NFL s most loyal and die-hard fans; the Detroit Lions Fan. The bar s classic design is inspired by all of the oldschool drinking holes that lined the Detroit streets around Briggs Stadium where the team played for nearly four decades. SOUTH CLUB & LOGE BOXES The South side area celebrates Detroit s tradition and takes its cues for the original Hudson s warehouse. The design aesthetic maintains this important history, and is elevated to include a greater brand presence through graphics, lighting and team colors. The furnishings and finishes will reflect a modern aesthetic while blending with existing elements. TERRACE CLUB & SUITES Social and communal gathering is the hallmark for this unique club on the north suite level. At its core are the theater box-style suites where a group of people can come together and watch the game but still have the option of gathering in a communal environment directly outside of their suite. 28 It was, legend says, a typically colorful, probably chilly, November day in 6 that Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated the new world s bounty with a sumptuous feast. They sat together at Plymouth Plantation (they spelled it Plimouth) in Massachusetts, gave thanks for the goodness set before them, then dined on pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, maize, cranberry sauce, turkey and who knows what else. Actually, fish was just as predominant a staple. And history books say pumpkin pie really debuted a year later. But regardless of the accuracy of the details, that s how Thanksgiving Day is seen by Americans -- except Detroiters. They may have most of the same images as everyone else, but with a new twist that began in 94. That s when Detroiters and their outstate Michigan compatriots found themselves at the dawn of an unplanned behavior modification, courtesy of George A. Dick Richards, owner of the city s new entry in the National Football League: The Detroit Lions. - Larry Paladino, Lions Pride, 99 Four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. The relationship between Detroit and Thanksgiving dates back to 94 when owner G.A. Richards scheduled a holiday contest between his first-year Lions and the Chicago Bears. Some 8 years later, fans throughout the State of Michigan have transformed an annual holiday event into the single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. Indeed, if football is America s passion, Thanksgiving football is Detroit s passion. The game was the brainchild of Richards, the first owner of the Detroit Lions. Richards had purchased the team in 94 and moved the club from Portsmouth, Ohio to the Motor City. The Lions were the new kids in town and had taken a backseat to the baseball Tigers. Despite the fact the Lions had lost only one game prior to Thanksgiving in 94, the season s largest crowd had been just 5,. The opponent in 94 was the undefeated, defending World Champion Chicago Bears. The game would determine the champion of the Western Division. Richards had convinced the NBC Radio Network to carry the game coast-to-coast (94 stations) and additionally, an estimated 6, fans jammed into the University of Detroit Stadium while thousands more disappointed fans were turned away. The game was the NFL's first on a national broadcast. In 9, the Lions Thanksgiving Day game against Green Bay marked the NFL s 75th anniversary of the first NFL national game broadcast. Graham McNamee was the announcer for LIONS THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITION NBC Radio for that historic game in 94. Despite two Ace Gutowsky touchdowns, the Bears won the inaugural game 9-6, but a classic was born. Since 94, 77 games have been played with the Lions holding a 7-8- record in the series. And each game, in its own way, continues to bring back memories of Thanksgiving, not only to Lions fans, but to football fans across the nation. THANKSGIVING DAY FACTS The ¾ series began November 9, 94 when Detroit played host to the Chicago Bears. In the first Thanksgiving Day game, the Lions were defeated by the Bears 9-6. A ¾ total of 77 games have been played with the Lions owning a 7-8- record in the annual holiday classic. More ¾ than 4 million fans have witnessed the Lions 77 Thanksgiving Day games. The total attendance for the first 77 games is 4,7,48 an average of 56,77 fans per game. Detroit ¾ has won on Thanksgiving Day in each of the past four seasons, marking the team's longest streak in the holiday classic since winning four-straight from The ¾ Lions have played 4 different teams since the first Thanksgiving Day game. The most common opponent has been the Green Bay Packers, who the Lions played in for the st time in the Thanksgiving series. Their second most common opponent is the Chicago Bears (6 times). The ¾ two highest scoring games were a 44-4 Packers win in 986 and a 5-5 Detroit romp over Green Bay in 95. The ¾ lowest scoring game was a - Philadelphia win in the 968 Mud Bowl. Twelve ¾ times in the series has a game been decided by three points or less, with the Lions record standing at 5-5- in those meetings. The ¾ most lopsided game was a 45- Lions win over Pittsburgh in 98. Seven ¾ shutouts have been recorded, but only one by the Lions (- over the Bears in 979). Three ¾ Thanksgiving Day games have gone into overtime. The first came in 98 when the Bears David Williams returned the opening kickoff of OT for a 95-yard touchdown. At the time, the game marked the shortest overtime game in NFL history ( seconds). The second overtime game occurred in 998 when the Lions defeated the Steelers 9-6 on a 4-yard Jason Hanson field goal in a game that will be remembered for the controversial coin toss before overtime began. The third occurred against the Houston Texans in in a game categorized by back-and-forth possessions and two missed field goals from each side, with Houston K Shayne Graham pulling out a -yarder for the win.
