Team Philosophy The Success of Teamwork: Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. Worland Girls High School Soccer 2016 Season Head Coach: Danielle Warren Henry Ford dwarren@wsh1.k12.wy.us Cell: (307) Work: (307) Ext Assistant Coach Junior Varsity: Brianna Shefferly bshefferly@wsh1.k12.wy.us Cell: (616) SOCCER PHILOSOPHY 1. Soccer is a TEAM game. 2. The game is a test of wills, rewarding teams united in a common effort with players who SUPPORT and RESPECT one another. 3. Soccer is a game of ultimate physical effort (sprinting, moving, agility, etc.) and attention to detail (fundamentals). Great players do both. 4. If we prepare for excellence and demonstrate the will and determination to succeed as a TEAM- at season s end, we will have learned some of life s most valuable lessons and hopefully bring home a trophy. 5. Good sportsmanship on and off the field is of the utmost importance by all members of the team: Coaches, Players and Parents. We represent Worland, let s leave a good impression. DEFENSE 1. Great TEAMS make a total commitment to TEAM defense. We are only as good as our defense (When an opponent scores, they score on all of us). 2. Offense Wins Games; Defense Wins Championships. 3. As a TEAM, our commitment is to put unrelenting pressure on every opponent. 4. We pressure the ball AT ALL TIMES!!! 3

Absence Policy Attendance- Attendance and punctuality are expected at all practices and games. Failure to attend these events could result in loss of playing time for the individual, depending on the nature of the absence. If a player is to miss due to a medical appointment, sufficient prior notice is expected to be given to the coach staff. Excused Absence: Medical or School related. You must turn in a note from the doctor/school personnel or it will be considered unexcused. Unexcused Absence: Anything that is not medical, school related or excused by the Head Coach prior to absence. After 2 unexcused absences, the athlete will be off the team. Any athlete who cannot make it to practice for the entire scheduled duration will be considered unexcused unless they have cleared their absence with the Head Coach. Only one detention will be excused. The second one will count as an unexcused absence. All athletes are expected to be at every game that they are eligible for unless they have cleared their absence prior to the game that they are going to miss. Choosing not to go is not an option! If you miss a game without it being excused, it is considered an unexcused absence. 4

Sportsmanship Sportsmanship- In good sportsmanship during any soccer related activity on or off the field no profanity will be tolerated by players or coaching staff. Proper respect will be shown to all players, coaches, support staff, referees, and even opponents. There will be no arguing with a decision of the coaching staff. Disagreements, concerns, etc. will be dealt with in private. Failure to show respect could result in loss of playing time, removal from competition, or even dismissal from team. Depending on the severity of the disrespect, the consequences will be at the coaches discretion and the Parent- Student Handbook according to The Adult Rule. Mr. Miller and Mr. Smith will be notified of behaviors. If a parent has a concern, follow the Chain of Command as outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook. Receiving a yellow or red card during competition could affect future playing time. Negative comments toward the referee will not be tolerated. Team captains will speak with the referees about concerns. Behavior- Instance of inappropriate behavior and/or hazing will not be tolerated in the Warrior Soccer Program. Any circumstances of such behavior will be dealt with severely and consequences will be left to the discretion of the coaching staff and school administration. Appropriate behavior both at home and during road trips is expected from the Warrior Soccer Team. If inappropriate behavior should arise, the appropriate school officials, as per the Parent-Student Handbook, will deal with the issues. In addition, on overnight trips, team members will be expected to remain in their room throughout the night and refrain from entering rooms of individuals of opposite sex at any time. Social Media- Student-athletes need to always represent Worland High School in a positive manner. They need to be mindful and careful when communicating through the use of social networks. Myspace, facebook, twitter, etc. are examples of these social networks. Any online/cell phone posting (myspace, facebook, twitter, etc.) violating the expectations of Worland Warrior Soccer will result in game suspension and or removal from team until removed. 5

Leadership Team Captains- Team captains are players who lead and model by their good example. They have certain qualities like a positive attitude, a good work ethic, and perseverance. This is done on and off the field and in and out of the classroom. The players will vote on two team captains. The coaches will have to approve the individuals chosen. Captains are subject to change at the coaches discretion at any time based upon those qualities listed above as well as the factors regarding playing time under the Warrior Soccer Expectations and Guidelines or other disciplinary issues. A good leader makes assumptions A GREAT leader asks questions! A good leader waits for feedback A GREAT leader solicits feedback! A good leader finds reasons for the problem A GREAT leader finds solutions for the problem! A good leader takes notes A GREAT leader creates actions steps! A good leader works a job a GREAT leader invests their lives in what they do! A good leader leads through declarations a GREAT leader leads through influence! A good leader makes promises a GREAT leader keeps their promises! A good leader is obsessed with gathering information a GREAT leader is willing to make the tough call after receiving the proper information. A good leader is supported by those who follow him a GREAT leader supports those who follow him! A good leader asks What Are You Doing...a GREAT leader asks How Are You Doing? 6

Awards & Lettering Athletes must complete a full season to receive any type of award. Participation Awards- All athletes receive a participation award. Lettering- The players that will receive a letter are those that are selected to go to state. Other letters given out will be left to the coaches discretion. Athletic Awards- 1. Most Improved Freshman 2. Most Improved Overall Athlete 3. Sportsmanship 4. Leadership 5. Attendance 6. Most Valuable Player 7. Any others to be decided by Coaches. All-Conference Awards- All Conference Players are chosen by the Coaches in our Western Region. It is an honor to receive All-Conference as it means that other coaches see the value of a player on the field. All-State Awards- In order to be considered for an All-State Award you must first be selected for All-Conference. Coaches are asked: If you had to put together a 3A Girls Soccer Team to travel to other states and compete with; who would you want to be on your team? 7

Responsibilities & Rules of Warrior Soccer All School Rules Found in the Student Handbook Will Apply to the Soccer Team 1. Practices- Practices will be held from 4:00-6:00pm at the high school. Athletes need to be on the field and ready to warm up every day by 4:00 or game time will be adjusted at coaches discretion. It is the player s responsibility to make arrangements with teachers to complete all class work so that it does not interfere with practices. Athletes need to be prepared for both outdoor and indoor practices depending on the weather. School Appropriate Clothing. 2. Concerns- Athletes and parents can always approach the staff with any concerns. A time can be set up to meet with parents and athletes. Two coaches will always be present during these meetings. This is to confirm what was discussed, decisions made, and actions taken. If there is a problem with a particular coach, the parent(s) and athlete(s) will meet with that particular coach who will be accompanied by another coach from the staff. 3. Equipment- Each athlete is responsible for any school equipment received. This would include uniforms, bags, balls, water bottles, etc. Failure to return an item will result in a bill for the unreturned items. 4. Electronic Devices- These devices will be monitored at all times, especially on road trips, to make sure that student-athletes are using them in an appropriate manner. The abuse of these devices will result in the disciplinary action as stated in the Discipline Grid in the Parent-Student Handbook. NO Cellphones in Locker Rooms! 5. Playing Time- Playing time for individual players is to be determined by a number of factors. Some factors include: attendance, work ethic in practice, attitude, performance, ability, willingness to accept the team concept, and coachability. Playing time is subject to change throughout the course of the season and is up to the discretion of the coaching staff. Issues regarding playing time will be considered using the chain of command listed in the Parent-Student Handbook. All playing time issues should begin with communication between the athlete and coach and then proceed if there is not satisfaction. 6. Eligibility- Eligibility is defined in the student handbook and is evaluated on a week by week basis running from Wednesday morning to Tuesday evening of the following week. Once a player is determined to be ineligible, then they are considered ineligible at least until the next Wednesday, pending the improvement of their grades. Students may work their way off the deficiency list prior to the next eligibility period per Student-Parent Handbook. Repeated appearances on the deficiency list may result in reduced playing time or removal from the team. 8

7. Dress Code- A dress code will be expected for players on the day of a game. Players will be expected to wear a skirt or dress pants and jersey, no jeans, to school on the day of either a home or away game. The specifications of the high school dress code will be met on all road trips. Depending on where we play and what facilities are available, we might dress at home prior to leaving for the closer away games, i.e. Cody and Powell. For our practices and in-game dress, no headbands, armbands, jewelry, etc. will be worn at any time. This deviates from the TEAM concept and some items are safety concerns. 8. Risk of Injury- Soccer is a game with potential for serious injury. There is a risk of severe injury or possible death. As a coaching staff we believe that if the players utilize the techniques taught to them, the chance of serious injury should be reduced. It is the athlete s responsibility to wear proper attire and gear (such as shin guards that meet NOCSAE requirements) at all practices and games. Shin guards must be the appropriate size based on the athlete s height and have NOCSAE stamped on the front of the shin guard. It is expected that injuries be reported to the coaching staff in a timely manner, as well as any medical attention received by the athlete outside of the athlete/coach contact time. One of our biggest concerns in soccer is concussions. Soccer has the highest number of reported incidents. If a student-athlete appears to have had a significant blow to the head, they will be taken out of the event to be evaluated for a concussion. Coaches will have a Pocket Guide: Concussion Sign and Symptoms to evaluate the studentathlete. If a medical professional is present, they will perform the evaluation. If a player has been taken out of the game by an official due to a suspected concussion, they must be evaluated and cleared by a medical professional in order to return to the competition. If there is any doubt that a student-athlete has a concussion, they will sit out the remainder of the competition. Our first priority as coaches is the safety of your student-athlete, so to be safe If in doubt, sit out. 9. Commitment Policy- Any violation of the Chemical Use Policy of Worland High School shall be dealt with as per the Parent-Student Handbook. This includes the misuse and or abuse of over the counter drugs, prescription, and performance enhancing drugs. Refer to your Parent-Student Handbook. 10. Media Release- Player name, year in school, specifics to injuries will not be released to the media, height and other soccer related information may be released to the media (newspaper, internet, radio, etc.). Player name, position, and number will also be printed in the program given to fans. Disciplinary actions will not be released. 11. Transportation- Students are expected to travel to and from the events on the bus with the team. However, in the event that a parent wishes to have their student travel home with them from an event, the appropriate paperwork must be completed through the high school office. 12. NCAA Requirements- Any student that desires to compete at any of the NCAA divisions must meet certain academic requirements and specific paperwork must be completed to ensure compliance by NCAA standard. Further information of NCAA regulations and procedures are found on the NCAA website NCAA.org. 9

Parent/Student Contract I have received, read, and understand the Warrior Soccer Expectations and Guidelines that are in place for the season and agree to release my child s name, year in school, height, injury (specifics will not be given), and soccer related information to the media. Parent Signature Date Student Signature Date I would encourage both parents and students to look in the Parent-Student Handbook on pages to refresh your memories about extra-curricular activities, guidelines, and expectations in greater detail.
