3 Will Wade Head 1st Year at LSU 5th Year as a Head Coach Frank William Will Wade was named the 22nd head men s basketball coach at LSU on March 20, He comes to LSU after a two-year stint as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University with four years of very successful experience as a head basketball coach. Wade was introduced to LSU fans in a most unique way for an introduction of a Tiger coach -- at a special media event held in the middle of the LSU Student Union. Wade told the media and a large contingent of LSU students: I am so excited about the opportunity to lead this program and LSU Basketball back to the top of the SEC and back to regular, consistent NCAA Tournament appearances. We have been to four Final Fours. We have been to 21 NCAA Tournaments. We have 10 SEC Championships, and we are going to add to all three of those categories over our tenure here. We are going to have players, staff members, everyone in our program is going to be committed to doing what it takes to make LSU the best basketball program that it can be. We are going to have unwavering commitment to put the team first, to put the state first, to put our school first to represent all of these folks in a firstclass fashion. We are going to be a hardworking team that represents this great university that represents this great state, Wade said. LSU and its fans are not looking for a rebuilding program, but taking the foundation and making it solid again a change of culture that gives the program a look of consistency yearafter-year. Wade, one of the youngest coaches in Division I at 34, but one of the most energetic showed his recruiting chops early with a class for the season that was ranked 16th in college basketball in the composite recruiting rankings. Wade s recruiting chops and promotional ideas has created a buzz in the pre-season that hasn t been seen too often and the Coach has done his part, speaking most of the summer on the Tiger Tour and to student groups making sure they feel a part of the program. Coach Wade has been seen on the night prior to football game visiting with folks in the RV lots and on the first day of school was out in a golf cart picking up students and giving them a lift to opening day classes. The native of Nashville, Tennessee, directed VCU to a record and two NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons. The 2016 Rams advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating seventh-seed Oregon State before losing to Oklahoma. Wade was the youngest head coach in the NCAA Tournament in In 2017, VCU lost to St. Mary s in the first round of the 2017 tourney. The Rams were 28-8 over his two years in the Atlantic 10 Conference, posting 14-4 records both years. The team was in 2016 and earned a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season crown. The 2017 team won 26 games and finished second in the league, one-game behind Dayton. Under his tutelage, guard Melvin Johnson earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in while Je Quan Lewis represented VCU on the first team. Mo Alie-Cox was named to the A-10 Defensive Team in both 2016 and Wade, age 34, previously served at VCU as an assistant with the Rams under Shaka Smart from VCU was during that time, reached three NCAA Tournament and won the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championship. He was part of the staff in 2011 when VCU advanced from the NCAA First Four all the way to the Final Four in Houston. During his tenure as a Ram assistant, Wade, who worked closely with VCU s post players, saw the Milwaukee Bucks select center Larry Sanders with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft (now with Cleveland). In addition, Wade played a major role in the development of current NBA players Troy Daniels (Memphis) and Briante Weber (Charlotte). Weber owns VCU records for 3-pointers in a single season and career steals. Wade is credited with being a key figure in four top non-power five recruiting classes in his four seasons at VCU. Prior to becoming the head coach at VCU, Wade served as the head coach at Chattanooga for the and seasons. His first Mocs squad went in 2014, finishing 12-6 and second in regular season Southern Conference play. The 18 wins overall were the most by the program since and the 12 wins in league games was the highest total since The team made the school s first postseason appearance since 2009 in the CIT. Wade was honored with the Anton Foy Southern Conference Coach of the Year award for his efforts in Also that year, Z. Mason became the first Chattanooga student-athlete to win the conference s Defensive Player of the Year award. The Mocs won 22 games in 2015 and finished 15-3 in the league as Wade guided Chattanooga to its first 20-win season since He finished his two seasons there at and 27-7 in league play. In the two seasons prior to his arrival, Chattanooga was overall and in SoCon play. Wade s reputation, where ever he has coached, is a person who is a tireless worker and relentless recruiter. Wade was VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart s first hire upon being named the head VCU coach in That reputation was cemented prior to his arrival on the VCU campus. He served as an assistant to Tommy Amaker at Harvard in and Much like at VCU, he was Amaker s first hire. In their second year, the Crimson went 14-14, the first season of.500 or better in the program since Wade had a hand in the development of future NBA standout Jeremy Lin and assembled a top 25 recruiting class during his stay. Wade s coaching start came at Clemson where he served as Director of Basketball Operations ( ) and Graduate Assistant ( ) after four seasons as a student manager ( ). LAST TIME OUT LSU 97, UNCW 84 The Tigers showed no ill effects of a long exam layoff as LSU responded with a win over UNCW in the Maravich Center. Duop Reath came off the bench to play 27 minutes and hit 13-of-17 field goal attempts including a trey and a free throw to become the second person on the team this year to hit the 30-point mark. Reath, the senior forward from Australia, also had five rebounds. Freshman guard Tremont Waters continued to show his game from several different angles with 20 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, just missing a triple double. Sophomore guard Skylar Mays added 14 points and Wayde Sims posted 11 points. Again, LSU was way over 50 percent from the field in both halves, shooting 21-of-33 in the first half and 15-of-28 in the second half to finish at 59 percent (36-61). The Tigers were over 42 percent from the arc (8-19) and finished 17-of-20 from the free throw line. LSU s plan to get the ball inside against UNCW worked very well with 48 points in the paint and although the Tigers turned the ball over 16 times to 13 for the Seahawks, LSU did have a advantage in points off turnovers. 5 LSU SHOOTS 50 PERCENT AGAIN AGAINST UNCW In fiver of LSU s first seven contests, the Tigers have shot over 50 percent from the floor and that has accounted for all five of LSU s wins this season: Alcorn State (11/10) 36-of % Samford (11/16) 39-of % Michigan (11/20) 27-of % UTM (11/29) 31-of % UNCW (12/10) 36-of % LSU s first three games of the season equaled out to 102-of-170 (60.0%), the third best three-game field goal shooting percentage since 1975: Jan (106/170, 62.4%) Feb (95/158, 60.1%) Nov (102/170, 60.0%) For the season, LSU is shooting 53.6 percent ( ), best in the SEC and third in the nation. Virginia Tech is the nation s best presently at 55.3% Last year, LSU shot 45.1 percent from the field. LSU will be looking to improve its field goal percentage defense which after seven games stands at 46.8 percent (190-of-406), 14th in the conference and 290 in the NCAA. LSU has won six straight games when shooting over 50 percent, dating back to last season. LSU INSIDE THE ARC LEADS NATION As of Tuesday, LSU, according to TeamRankings.com, was No. 1 in the country when it came to shooting inside the arc. The Tigers are at 63.1 percent, including 21-of-32 against UTM (65.6%) and 24-of-42 (66.7%) against UNCW. This is up from last season when LSU shot 50.2% inside the arc. LSU is averaging 8.1 threes a game, up from last year when the Tigers made 6-3 a contest. Opponents, however, are making treys as well, hitting 68 through the seven games, averaging 9.7 a contest (8.9 a year ago). LSU is shooting 37.3 percent from the arc, up from 33.6 percent a year ago. THE TIGERS DID WHAT AT THE LINE???? An LSU team that at times struggles at the line over the years, was on the mark against Samford (11/16), making 19-of-20 for the game, including 16-of-16 in the first half. Both times by then freshman. On Nov. 29, 2016, then freshman Skylar Mays had 11 dishes against Houston. Then on Nov. 29, 2017, freshman Tremont Waters posted 10 assists against UT Martin. The freshman then had everyone scrambling after just missing a triple double that included another 10 rebounds. DUOP REATH S 30 POINTS EARNS HIM HIS SECOND CAREER POW HONOR FROM SEC LSU senior forward Duop Reath earned SEC Player of the Week honors for the second time in his LSU career after a huge scoring night against UNCW in LSU s win on Sunday. The 6-11 native of Australia made a career high 13 field goals, including one three, and added 3-of-4 field goal attempts to finish with a career high 30 points. His previous high was 23 points and one of those came in the opening week of the season when he was also named the POW. Reath, in the last two games at home against UT-Martin (Nov. 29) and UNCW (Dec. 10) has made 19-of-26 field goal attempts and scored 45 points. He is averaging 14.6 points a game and 4.9 rebounds a game. He has posted a 65.0 shooting percentage from the floor and has made 73.3% of his free throw attempts. It is the second honor this year for LSU Basketball as Tremont Water won Freshman of the Week for his play in the opening game of the season against Alcorn State. THE OPPONENT HOUSTON The Cougars are 8-1 on the year, 2-0 in true road games Houston wins by an average of 16.2 points a game Houston s is on a seven-game winning streak after a loss on a neutral court to Drexel, Houston was a winner at a game at Texas Southern on Dec. 2 against Arkansas. Their last game was Dec. 9 at Saint Louis, Rob Gray is their leading scorer at 21.6 points per game with a 3.0 rebounds per game average. Gray is 55-of-107 from the field and 17-of-35 (48.6%) from the three-point arc. Three other players are also hitting over 40 percent from the arc with Wes VanBeck 19-of-44, Corey Davis, Jr. is at 17-of-41 and Amoni Brooks is 17-of-39. The team is 74-of-177 for 41.8 percent while opponents have shot just 31.8% in the first nine games. Devin Davis averages 13.1 points per game while VanBeck is at Kelvin Sampson is the coach of the Cougars. The Tigers and Cougars are meeting for the 19th time with Houston leading The teams met six times between 1962 and 1984, before sets of home-and-home contracts sustained the series between 1997 and the present. TIGERS LOCAL CONNECTION This year s Tiger team has eight players from Louisiana six returnees in Brandon Sampson, Skylar Mays, Marshall Graves, Reed Vial, Aaron Epps and Wayde Sims; and, the two signees from Louisiana Brandon Rachal of Natchitoches and Galen Alexander of Breaux Bridge. ONWUASOR STARTS LAST THREE GAMES IN PLACE OF SAMPSON Graduate student Randy Onwuasor has started the last two games for the Tigers after the injury to Brandon Sampson, playing 34 minutes against Marquette in Maui, 12 minutes in the UT Martin win and 24 minutes against UNCW. In the two games combined, Onwuasor has played 46 minutes and made 7-of-14 shots with two rebounds, two assists and 18 points (13 vs. Marquette, 5 against UT Martin). The Southern Utah graduate led the Big Sky Conference in scoring a year ago at 23.6 minutes per game (fifth in the nation). EPPS CONSISTENT IN STARTS After missing the first game of the year with a leg injury, Epps saw a limited 10 minutes of action in the Samford game (11/16), hitting 4-of-5 shots for eight points... He equaled the second highest scoring game of his career against Michigan in the first game in Maui (11/20) when he scored 14 points in 23 minutes on 6-of-7 shooting with two treys. Epps has shown consistency in his last two starts at home getting six points and eight rebounds against UT Martin and six points and seven rebounds against UNCW. He is averaging 6.5 points a game and 3.7 rebounds. SKYLAR MAYS GOOD ON AND OFF THE FLOOR It all fits in doesn t it pre-med major; 4-plus GPA and starting guard on the team. Last year it was starting point guard for 25 of 31 games. This year it s still somewhat starting point guard because in Coach Wade s system, he believes in having two point-guard types out on the floor to smoothly run the offense through. So far the numbers are good as he is averaging 12.1 points per game, 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Against UT Martin, Mays equaled his career high for field goals (6, fourth time) and three-pointers (4, second time) He followed that up with a 26 minutes 14-point performance against UNCW when he also had three assists. In the last two games, he has scored a combined 32 points, while hitting 11-of-18 field goals and 6-of-13 three-pointers. Mays has hit 27-of-53 field goal attempts (50.9% compared to 41.1% a year ago) and is 11-of- 29 from the field. He hit his first 16 free throws and is 20-of-23 this season. JC TRANSFER DARYL EDWARDS Edwards has scored a combined 22 points in the last contests (15 vs. UTM, 7 vs. UNCW) and has gotten minutes restored off the bench with a combined 43 in the last two games. In the two games, he is 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the arc. Edwards for the season is averaging 17.4 minutes a game, 5.7 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists. WAYDE SIMS GETTING COACH S ATTENTION Monday night on The Will Wade Radio Show Coach Wade again talked about sophomore Wayde Sims and his improvement from last year to this year. Sims has started six-of-seven games and against UNCW had his third double figure game of the season with 11 points. He has shot 50 percent or more in five of the seven games and is 21-of- 44 from the floor. He is averaging 7.7 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per contest. Sims father, Wayne, was a Fighting Tiger under Coach Dale Brown in the late 1980s-early 1990s and was a member of the 1991 SEC Championships team. SEC STATS As mentioned Tremont Waters is fifth in the SEC in scoring at 18.3 points per game and the second freshman in the league scoring stats, while leading the league in assists at 6.6. He is eighth in field goal percentage (49.4%) and three-point FG percentage (41.5%). He is fourth in minutes played at 31.6 minutes per game. NAZ REID Five-star forward Nazreon Reid of Asbury Park, New Jersey is a 6-10 power forward. Reid prepped at Roselle (New Jersey) Catholic school. Reid was listed as the No. 3 power forward for the class of He played this past summer for Sports U and averaged 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. For Roselle as a junior he averaged 13.8 points and 9.1 rebounds a contest. He helped lead Roselle Catholic under Coach Dave Boff to the Tournament of Champions title. JA VONTE SMART Four-star guard Ja Vonte Smart of Scotlandville Magnet High School in Baton Rouge is the two time winner of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Insurance/Louisiana Sports Writers Association Mr. Basketball award as well as the Gatorade Louisiana Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He was MVP of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 5A team for the second time as well. Smart is the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana. As a junior, Smart led Scotlandville to the LHSAA Division I select state title with averages of 25.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.1 steals. It was the second state title in three seasons for Scotlandville and Coach Carlos Sample.
