Motion Zone ffense oach K Duke 1. Principle based offense a. Shot selection is huge - different for all players b. Don t try to fit your players into an offense. Teach them to play offense. c. They must learn to react instinctively d. Freedom to read the defense e. Win and lose together as a team WE f. Teach the kids to read the defense every day in practice on 3 Perimeter Drill a. Defense is in total denial
b. atch and be strong in triple threat. c. Keep spacing on dribble penetration. - weak side guard stay in the vision of the dribbler on weak side penetration d. atch and be ready to shoot. e. Set more back screens and back cut more against this defense on 3 Perimeter with a coach in the post a. oach is a passer for the offense. Defense must react to pass in the post accordingly 4. Box Drill (Perimeter)
a. Get into gaps b. Penetrate the gaps - Makes the defense react. Two will guard one which makes it hard to recover when you kick it out. - Shot Fake or Pass Fake on every catch. 5. Post Drill (Bottom f the Zone) a. Pass to the corner and seal in on middle defender b. Screen the zone first then seal in c. Seal out when ball is on top and seal in when ball goes to corner. d. Start on the weak side block and move to short corner on pass to corner. - Shoot or Power turn and lay-up.
6. 2 on 3 Bottom a. Seal in, seal out. b. Add the top flash when the ball goes weak side. Look high/low c. Flash high post. Move to short corner and dive. d. Pass the ball to the corner. Screen the center of the zone and cut to strong block. (Diagram Below) 7. Building Your Zone Motion a. Gap Attack
- Perimeter will attack the gaps but no cutting - Post seal in and out. an flash up to sweet stop and high post. - Posts stay behind the zone. This pulls the bottom of the zone down and widens the middle to flash cuts. - When you catch the ball in the post, look to the opposite wing as well. Wing must get in vision of passer and talk (Say Skip) - After the post kicks it to the opposite wing, they could flash back to the ball and get it back. b. Quote When a team plays hard and thinks, it is a tough team to beat. c. Gaps And utting Against The Zone - Every pass the perimeter makes, they will cut through the zone. Look for the ball and empty out. - Perimeter keep balance and spacing - Post seal in when the ball goes to the corner - A missed shot is not a mistake. Not taking a good shot for you is a mistake. Not crashing the boards on missed shots is a mistake -
4 - This cut makes 4 have to make a decision on staying in or going out.
- If you have a good shooter, the defense will lose track of them if they move. c. Gap attack, cutting and screening - Ball screens - Flare screens - Pin the back side of the zone and skip - Screen the outside of the zone. Either the top or the bottom. After the big screens the top of the zone, they should roll to the sweet spot out 1 in Zone Motion a. Good to use if you have a big who can step out. b. Big can move in and out. c. Post stay on one side. Seal, screen and flash. d. Any pass to the corner, the passer cuts through and everyone fills up.
e. When you reverse the ball a few times, the top of the zone gets used to moving east/west. Now is a good time to catch it on top and try to bust through the top two defenders with dribble penetration. f. Put a restriction on the number of post touches they must get until you can shoot a jump shot. 9. Distortion(High/Low Stacks vs Zone) a. High/low stacks into motion. - dribble enter and loop. - Screen the zone Zone Attack
a. 3 Deep attack vs Get into gaps - orner person is best shooter and runner - Bottom people screen the zone for the runner. b. High screen vs Screen the top of the zone then pop. - Pass to the corner or look for the pop person. If Pop person catches it, look high/low first then reverse the ball
- This set overloads the side to quick for the defense to handle.
Thoughts on Building a Zone Attack
Thoughts on Building a Zone Attack 1) What is your philosophy against the zone defense? 2) What do you want to emphasize in your zone attack? Get the ball inside. The ball must be touched inside before
