Union is coming off a win at Lyon on Thursday. Six Union players scored in double figures as Union exploded for 52 second half points. Today, Union hosts No. 21 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) in a ba le for the top spot in the TranSouth with just two weeks le in the season. The Lions have won eight straight games since their loss to Union back on January 16. The two teams met in last season s conference tournament tle game, with Union winning the tle. Both Union and Freed-Hardeman advanced to the NAIA Na onal Tournament last season. Freed-Hardeman lost in the first round in OT to the eventual na onal champion Rocky Mountain (Mont.). Union lost in the second round to Columbia (Mo.), who finished runner-up in the na onal tournament last season. Union has won five straight games, including an 11-2 record since returning from the Christmas break. The success of Union since Christmas has been in large part to the defense being played by the Bulldogs. In the 13 games this semester, Union is giving up an average of just 63 points per game. During that same stretch, Union has allowed 70 points just three mes. The 75 points allowed in Union s win at Freed-Hardeman earlier in semester is the highest allowed in the past 13 games. Currently, Union ranks No. 1 in the TranSouth and No. 3 in the NAIA in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents just 38 percent shoo ng from the field. Union also ranks No. 1 in the TranSouth, giving up just 65 points per game on the year. The Bulldogs are also ranked No. 1 in the NAIA with 31.7 defensive rebounds per game, No. 5 in freethrow percentage (.736) and No. 7 with 41.9 total rebounds. Senior All-American and reigning TranSouth Player of the Week Greg Truvillion con nues to lead the Bulldogs. Truvillion leads Union in points (19.3), rebounds (9.5) and steals (1.2). However, the play of senior guard Martez Hawkins and junior post Roland Banhoro have been a key part in Union s recent success. In Union s 12 games prior to Christmas, Hawkins was averaging just 2.4 assists per game. In the 13 games since, Hawkins is at 5.3 assists per game. Banhoro has averaged 16 points per game in his last three games and has played his season high in minutes in each of the last three games. He is averaging 10 points and nine rebounds in conference play, which is higher than his 8-point and 7-rebound season average. Last me these teams met... January 16, 2010 in Henderson. 6 No. 18 Union holds on for an win at Freed-Hardeman HENDERSON, Tenn. - 1/16/ The No. 18 Union University Bulldogs notched a big road win on Saturday with an victory at Freed- Hardeman (Tenn.) University. Union improved to 13-5 overall and 4-0 in the TranSouth. Freed-Hardeman dropped to 8-7 on the season and 1-1 in league play. This match up featured the TranSouth preseason co-players of the year in Union s Greg Truvillion and Freed-Hardeman s Zach Frey. The two did not disappoint as both led their teams in scoring with Truvillion posting 24 points and Frey getting 21 points. Freed-Hardeman opening the game with a 10-0 run. After Union finally broke into the scoring column four minutes into the game, the Bulldogs answered with a 10-0 run to tie the game. A 3-pointer from Samuel Danache gave Union their first lead at the 9:58 left in the half. Over the remainder of the half, the lead changed hands three times along with two ties. Freed-Hardeman pushed their lead to four points at the half, In the second half, Freed-Hardeman maintained a small lead until Greg Truvillion made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at with 14:38 left in the game. Over the next two minutes, the game featured five ties and six lead changes until a basket by Tacuma Alexander gave Union a lead. The Bulldogs never trailed again. Date: 1/16/2010 Arena: The Sports Center Time: 4:00 pm City, State: Henderson, TN Union held a slim lead with 7:03 left, but thanks to a 14-5 run over the next five minutes, the Bulldogs built their largest lead at Union made 10-of-16 free throws over the final two minutes to secure the win. Union was led by Truvillion s 24 points, including two three pointers and 10 made free throws. Antoine Joseph added 17 points, Stan McNeil scored 13 points and Alexander added 12 points. Alexander and McNeil combined for 10-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line in the game. Union shot 52 percent from the field, 44 percent (7-16) from behind the arc and 63 percent (31-49) from the charity strip. Freed-Hardeman s Frey led the way with 21 points. Ken Bingham added 19 points.
