RE: 2011 Hall of Fame Honorees DATE: November, 2010 AHSCA HALL OF FAME BALLOT The Executive Committee of the Arkansas High School Coaches Association is providing the membership the opportunity to participate in the selection of the 2011 Hall of Fame honorees. According to the AHSCA Hall of Fame Bylaws, the Executive Committee has chosen twenty-five (25) nominees from the master list for this ballot. Choose from the 25 nominees listed; use the ballot provided to list your choices in order of preference. Ballot due date is December 1, Members may submit names for consideration to be added to the master list. If you have candidates that meet the criteria, make your nomination and include a short biographical sketch of your nominee with your ballot. REMEMBER: A name without a biography is NOT a nomination. CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY FOR INDUCTION 1. Significant contributions to the AHSCA. 2. Accomplishments/honors on the state level. 3. Accomplishments/honors on the national level. 4. Must be a minimum age of forty (40). 5. Must have coached at least 15 years at the high school level; except under extenuating circumstances. 6. MUST BE RETIRED FROM ACTIVE COACHING. Each future nomination MUST include a complete resume to be considered for inclusion on the AHSCA HALL OF FAME MASTER LIST.
2 2011 AHSCA HALL OF FAME NOMINEES < Name, Career Location > Lonnie Barron, Mena Coach Barron coached basketball 25 years one at Van-Cove, three at Acorn and 21 at Mena. Two of his junior high football teams were undefeated; he coached three district JH basketball championship teams; a basketball state runner-up team; and, one team to a district track championship. His varsity football teams won five district championships and 2A state in 76. Charles Brady, West Side/GF Coach Brady coached basketball for 37 years - 28 at West Side-Greers Ferry, three at Quitman, five at Enola, and one at Mount Vernon. His West Side boys won the 83 state championship. His record at West Side is [averaged 25.5 wins per year]. Overall record: Ronnie Brown, Dardanelle Coach Brown led the Dardanelle senior boys for 13 years compiling a record. His teams qualified for the state tournament eight times, reaching the finals in 88. He also led teams to the state tournament at Leachville, Alpena, and Plainview (boys and girls). His overall coaching win percentage is 74%. Betty Burge, Harrison Coach Burge coached girls basketball teams for 35 years. Her Harrison team was NACC champions for three years. She coached Strong, Warren, Yellville and Hermitage to Regional Sportsmanship honors. Her Strong and Warren teams held dual state championships. In 13 years at Harrison, Coach Burge had an 80% winning record. Her teams played in 30 regional tournaments, 16 state tournaments and Warren, Strong and Gravette played in Final Four tournaments. Jim Cathcart, LR Central Jim Cathcart played basketball on the LR Central 1945 state champion team; at the U of A and professionally. He coached under Glen Rose at U of A; at Decatur, Bentonville, LR Southwest JH and LR Central. He led LR Central to the state championship in his second year. He then served as AD at Hot Springs. Harry Denson, Crossett Coach Denson started the track program at Crossett and was instrumental in the building of the first track at Crossett. For seven years his teams were either first or second in the state. In the early 60 s, Coach Denson took the Crossett team to the Tiger Relays and won, breaking Central High s long winning streak. He had one undefeated winning season at Crossett. As a college coach, he coached 16 All Americans, two national champions and was inducted into the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame, Deward Dopson, Harrison Deward Dopson coached basketball at Arkansas Tech and on the high school level at Manila and Harrison from and compiled a record. Bro Erwin, Beebe Bro Erwin coached football, basketball and track at Beebe for 23 years while teaching history. He took nine basketball teams to state tournaments four to the finals or semifinals. His 1941 team won the state championship. He produced several All Conference college athletes and three All Americans. In 23 years of coaching track, his teams won 17 district track meets. His 1947 team placed first in every event at the district track meet. Erwin s football teams won seven district championships in 23 years. From , Bro served as Superintendent of Beebe Schools. Glyndon Franklin, Nevada County Coach Franklin coached basketball, track and baseball for 33 years at Cale and Nevada County. Record at Cale was Girls basketball won 92 state; made 10+ trips to state tournaments. He was named Coach of the Year 25 times, won multiple regional and tournament championships, an undefeated state championship (basketball), basketball overall runner-up, two state track championships, numerous Outstanding Coach awards, and All Star senior girls coach nominee.
3 Ron Gean, West Memphis Coach Gean coached basketball at Turrell and West Memphis for 18 years. He had 16 conference championships and 1 state championship. Marion Budgie Glover, Pine Bluff Budgie Glover coached football for 33 years. His teams won 12 conference titles. Coach Glover s Pine Bluff team won the state championship in 90, '93, 94, and 95 and was the state runner-up in 92. Overall his teams achieved 13 conference titles and made 19 playoff appearances. His overall record was and he had 24 winning seasons. Vernie Harris, Flippin Vernie Harris coached a total of 31 years. Flippen girls basketball coach for 19 years took teams to regionals every year, earned nine conference championships, eight district championships, five regional championships and were the 88 state champs. He was an All Star coach in 88 and was designated conference Coach of the Year numerous times. Overall record: Conference record: George Harrison, Scranton George Harrison was basketball coach at Scranton for 33 years. He coached boys , record and girls 68-88, record He led Scranton to a state runner-up title and many state tournament berths. He was an All Star coach 81 & 99. Don Hubbard, Magnolia Don Hubbard coached football for 17 years at Bearden, DeQueen and Magnolia for a record of His teams won three state championships; he had three undefeated teams. He was All Star coach three times, Coach of the Year 68, district Coach of the Year eight times. Coach Hubbard s track teams were conference champs three times and state champs once. Ed Johnson, Crossett Ed Johnson coached football for 22 years at Crossett and two at Arkadelphia. His teams won six conference championships and two state championships. He served as an All Star coach twice. Overall record: Leo Johnson, Bradley Coach Johnson s Bradley girls basketball team won state championships in 62, 66, 67, and 68. They lost the championship in 65 by only one point; prior to that loss they had won 78 consecutive games. At graduation in 69, these players had lost only that game in six years. Johnson s Bradley teams won the Joe T. Robinson Tournament four consecutive years. His Stephens teams were undefeated for two years. At their invitation, he took this team to demonstrate at the Oklahoma Coaches Clinic. Johnson helped start girls basketball camps in Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma and served on the committee which began the girls All Star games in Arkansas. George Loss, LR Catholic Coach Loss was at St. Anne-Fort Smith from where he had a 39 and a 41 game winning streak. He coached football at LR Catholic for nine years; won conference championship in 68 and the 4A state championship in 71. His record at Catholic was Joe Mallett, St. Joseph Basketball Coach/Athletic Director at St Joseph state champion 1986; state runners-up 88 and 89; 19 state tournament appearances, five state semi-finals, eight state tournament/regional championships, 13 conference; 11 district championships. He was chosen Coach of the Year 10 times, coached All Stars 2004, had 18 All State basketball players. Overall record was in senior boys and in junior boys. Mallett had girls golf state championships in 2000, Served on the AHSCA Executive Committee from and was president in Other sports programs he began at St Joseph: volleyball, baseball, softball, track, golf, soccer, bowling. John Parrish, Ozark He coached Ozark boys basketball for 37 years. Coach Parrish won 689 senior boys games; had nine district championships and five regional championships. His teams won three Arkansas Tech championships, were state semi-finalists five times and were twice state runner-up. His team went to state tournaments 18 times. Coach Parrish served on the All Star staff five times.
4 Barry Lee Pruitt, Jonesboro Coach Pruitt was head basketball coach for 28 years at Jonesboro with 521 wins, two seasons winning 29 games. His teams won 94 & 07 state championships, 06 state runner-up, nine conference championships, eight Northeast Arkansas Invitational titles. Pruitt served as All Star basketball head coach twice and coached several years for the National Basketball Congress International. During his career, he was named conference Coach of the Year and AHSCA Outstanding Boys Basketball Coach. Bobby Reese, Delight Coach Reese has a combined 23 years of coaching experience. In 15 years at the high school level, he had one state championship and one state runner-up team in basketball and one state championship on the junior high level. He coached at Delight, Umpire, Waldo, Mabelvale, and McClellan. During his seven years at the collegiate level, he led Henderson State to two NAIA runner-up finishes as the head coach and two additional NAIA runner-up finishes as an assistant coach. He also served as an assistant for three years at Arkansas State University. Don Riggs, Jonesboro Coach Riggs spent more than 40 years at Jonesboro High serving as head football coach then A.D. His teams won eight conference championships, were three times state runner-ups, won two state championships. Coach Riggs was selected head coach of two state All Star teams and football 70 Coach of the Year. He first coached at Mountain Home for five seasons; his first team there was Lonnie Sutton, Watson Chapel Lonnie Sutton coached football 28 years; assistant at Strong and Barton: head coach at Mountain Pine, Hazen and Watson Chapel. He had 15 playoff appearances - 11 as a head coach. He was in the finals as a head coach four times winning two (Mountain Pine- 79 and Watson Chapel- 96). He had five conference championships as a head coach. Record: Jon Watson, Bauxite Jon Watson was head coach 28 of the 34 years he coached. His teams reached the play-offs 24 times, semi-finals seven times, finals twice and were 96 state champions. He served as All Star coach; officiated high school and AIC basketball for 23 years; officiated last official women s AIC basketball championship game. His record at Bauxite: Retired at Bauxite as winningest active coach in Arkansas and is listed as 7th all-time in wins. Overall record: Proudest accomplishment: Never given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in entire coaching career. Bill Welch, Rivercrest Bill Welch coached basketball 26 years starting in the early 1960's - seven years at Shawnee (in Joiner), three in Keiser and 16 at Rivercrest. He won his first state title at Shawnee in 63; three other titles at Rivercrest in 74, 78 and 80; and won the overall title in 74. His teams were state runners-up in 76 and 77. Coach Welch won Coach of the Year and coached the All Star game in 74; was the head coach for the East All Stars in 85. Overall record: (78%).
