2 With two playoff appearances in his first three years, Jim Caldwell has established himself as one of the most successful head coaches in recent franchise history. His 27 wins are the most ever by a Lions head coach over his first three seasons and his winning percentage of.563 (27-21) is the highest by any Lions head coach in the Super Bowl era. With a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, Caldwell earned his 50th career regular season win as an NFL head coach. In six seasons, including three in Indianapolis, he has accumulated a record of (.552 pct.) in 96 games, and he has led teams to the postseason in four of his six seasons. Beginning his football coaching career in 1977 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Iowa, 2017 marks Caldwell's 40th consecutive season coaching football. LIONS FINISH 9-7 IN 2016, EARN PLAYOFF BERTH The Lions finished the 2016 season with a record of 9-7 and earned the team s second playoff berth in the past three seasons. The last time the Lions made the playoffs twice in a three-year span was 1997 and ¾By earning a playoff berth in 2016, Caldwell joins Buddy Parker (1952, 1953) and Bobby Ross (1997, 1999) as the only coaches in Lions history to lead the team to the playoffs twice in their first three seasons with the club. EIGHT COMEBACK WINS IN 2016 The Lions finished the 2016 season with a record of 9-7. In eight of the team's nine wins, the Lions trailed in the fourth quarter and went on to win the game. Detroit set a new NFL record, surpassing the previous total of seven set by the 2009 Indianapolis Colts (also coached by Jim Caldwell), for the most wins in a season after trailing in the fourth quarter. REACHING 50 WINS With a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars (11/20), Caldwell, currently at 53, earned his 50th career regular season win as an NFL head coach. In six seasons, he has accumulated a record of (.552 pct) in 96 games. ¾25 WITH THE LIONS: The win over the Vikings (11/24) gave Coach Caldwell his 25th win as head coach of the Lions. He became the third head coach in team history to reach 25+ wins in a coach s first 50 games. He reached 25 wins in his 43rd game with the Lions, joining Buddy Parker (35 from ) and Potsy Clark (33 from ) as the only Lions head coaches to win 25 games in their first 50 with the Lions. CALDWELL S FOURTH SEASON IN DETROIT JIM CALDWELL Head Coach Years with Lions: 4 Years as NFL Head Coach: 7 Years in NFL: 17 COACHING OVERVIEW ¾Hired as head coach for the Detroit Lions January 14, ¾In 16 previous NFL seasons, Caldwell has worked on coaching staffs that have led teams to 13 winning seasons and only twice finished below.500. Overall, Caldwell s teams he coached for have compiled a regular season record, along with 14 playoff appearances, eight division titles, three conference championships and two Super Bowl wins. ¾As an NFL head coach (six seasons), Caldwell has led a team to 11+ wins twice (14 with Indianapolis in 2009, 11 with Detroit in 2014). Coached in three Super Bowls with Indianapolis (XLI and XLIV) and Baltimore (XLVII) and won two Super Bowl titles (Ind and Bal). ¾In his first year as head coach for IND (2009), he won the AFC Championship and led the franchise to Super Bowl XLIV. He became the first NFL coach to win his first 14 games and the fifth rookie head coach to reach the Super Bowl. ¾One of four head coaches to produce 24+ regular-season wins and a Super Bowl berth in their first two career seasons as head coach. ¾From , Caldwell was the Colts quarterbacks coach and was also promoted to assistant head coach and associate head coach during that time. He worked closely with QB Peyton Manning and the team s quarterbacks. During that span, Indianapolis set NFL records with seven consecutive seasons finishing with 11+ wins (6, Dallas ) and 12+ victories (4, Dallas, ). ¾After being appointed Ravens offensive coordinator in December 2012, Baltimore went on to win five of its next seven games, including Super Bowl XLVII. During that span, the offense averaged yards per game, including an average of yards per game during the four playoff wins. 3 BOB QUINN Executive Vice President and General Manager Years with Lions: 2 Years in NFL: 18 QUINN MAKES HIS MARK FIRST SEASON AT THE HELM Quinn s first season in the role of a franchise s top football executive culminated in a playoff appearance, and he became the only first-year executive among nine in the NFL to accomplish this feat since the 2013 season. In doing so, Quinn also became the Lions first general manager to guide the team to the playoffs in his inaugural season since Nick Kerbawy in ¾Along with the nearly 40-percent changeover and upgrade to the team s roster that he inherited, Quinn s changes paid dividends in 2016 when the Lions finished 9-7 on the team s way to the playoffs. ¾Entering his second season, Quinn s ongoing commitment to improve all aspects of the club s football operations has included restructuring the player personnel department and scouting evaluation processes; renovating the team s weight room and practice fields along with other facility improvements; upgrading the team s football information and video technology; and instituting a comprehensive nutritional program, which included the hiring of a performance dietician for the players. DRAFTING EXPERTISE Quinn's initial draft class in 2016 featured the selection of six linemen on offense and defense, the most linemen in a Lions draft since 1989 and the most ever in a seven-round draft. Highlighting last year s draft class was the Lions first-round selection T Taylor Decker, who earned all-rookie honors in Additionally, DT A Shawn Robinson and C/G Graham Glasgow would earn starting roles during their rookie seasons. ¾Of the 12 playoff teams in 2016, no team had members of its draft class play more games (108) than the Detroit Lions. PATRIOTS PAST During his time with New England, Quinn served a number of roles in the player personnel department, including most recently as Director of Pro Scouting from While he worked as Director of Pro Scouting, the Patriots won the 2014 Super Bowl and four-straight AFC East Division championships. ¾From , Quinn was the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel. For the previous nine years, Quinn worked in several different capacities within the Patriots player personnel department, including roles in college scouting as a National Scout and Regional Scout. He played an integral role in evaluating and procuring talent for the team through the NFL draft process, free agency, trades, etc. ¾While working for the New England Patriots, he helped contribute to one of the most impressive stretches in NFL history, one that produced four Super Bowl titles, including the most recent championship in 2014 (Super Bowl XLIX). Since 2000, Quinn s first year with New England, the Patriots have won six AFC Championships, 13 AFC East titles, 12+ games in a season 10 times (which includes the past six years) and 10+ games in 14 of his 16 seasons. COACHING/FRONT OFFICE CONNECTIONS ¾Lions Executive Vice President & General Manager Bob Quinn spent 16 seasons ( ) with New England serving in a variety of roles, including director of pro scouting and assistant director of pro personnel. ¾Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick joined the Lions coaching staff in 1976 as an assistant special teams coach. His also went on to coach the Lions wide receivers and tight ends in ¾Lions Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Harold Nash served in the same capacity for New England from ¾Lions Defensive Assistant-Special Projects Coach George Godsey served as the tight ends coach for the Patriots from , as well as the team s offensive assistant during the 2011 season. ¾Patriots Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia was on the same coaching staff as Lions Running Backs Coach David Walker at Syracuse during the seasons. ¾Several members of the Lions front office and football administration also spent time with the Patriots organization during their careers, including Lions Vice President of Player Personnel Kyle O'Brien ( ), Chief of Staff-Assistant to the General Manager Kevin Anderson ( ), Area Scout Jay Muraco ( ) and College Scout Ron Miles (2015). WHAT TO WATCH FOR D-LINE CONTINUES TO SHINE The Lions defensive line continued its impressive form after only conceding six points in the Lions' 16-6 victory over the New York Jets Saturday night at Ford Field. As a unit, the defense held the Jets to just 241 total yards in the game with 85 of those yards coming on the ground and 156 through the air. The victory highlighted a defensive effort that did not allow the Jets to find the end zone. Collectively, the defensive unit compiled three sacks, five tackles for loss, one interception, and one forced fumble. Part of the defensive line's recent success can be accredited to newly-added DE Cornelius Washington, who ended the day with three tackles and one sack. Washington on the defensive line's performance against the Jets: We did well at times. Not as well as we should have in other spots of the game, but we did pretty good. First half went well, we were able to hold him like I was telling her, able to hold them for the second week in a row, hold a team to not being able to score against us. So, as a defense, that s something you can kind of hang your head on every week. Washington on the overall defensive performance: I felt like we played well. We played very well. There was a couple times where I know that I should have gotten off the ball a little harder, set the edge a little better. So, I think we can improve in that area, just kind of setting the edge, playing a little more physical, little more tough at times. But other than that, I think we all played pretty well. Another reason for the defensive line's recharged energy stems from yet another addition to the defense this season, DT Akeem Spence, who came to the Lions as a free agent signing following four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spence ended his night with two total tackles, one of those coming from a sack. Though it was exhibition action, Spence s goal was to generate pressure and grow comfortable in his new-found role in Detroit s defense. Spence on fitting in with the Lions defensive schemes this season: Especially in free-agency, just talking to Coach Kris (Kocurek), had a long conversation with him over the phone speaking to him about the opportunities that Detroit presented. The way they play it, the D-tackles, we get up-field, we cause havoc. I don t know too many defensive tackles, that with the freedom that we have here, wouldn t want to be a part of it. When the opportunity presented itself, I jumped on it.

5 2017 PRESEASON NOTABLES NO DENYING THE DEFENSE The Lions defense held the Colts offense to just 230 total net yards (52 rushing, 178 passing) and only 10 points in the preseason opener and followed it up with a robust performance against the Jets. Detroit held New York to only 241 total net yards (85 rushing, 156 passing) and six points. ¾Through the first two preseason games, the Lions rank fourth in total defense (235.5), seventh in opponent passing yards per game (167.0) and tied for fifth in opponent rushing yards per game (68.5) Preseason Leaders, Total Defense Rk Tm G Yds/G PaYds/G RuYds/G 1 Bal NYG NO Det Preseason Leaders, Passing Yards Allowed Rk Tm G Yds/G PaYds/G RuYds/G 1 Bal NYG NYJ Was SF NO Det Preseason Leaders, Rushing Yards Allowed Rk Tm G Yds/G PaYds/G RuYds/G 1 Bal GB LAR Pit t NO t Det Detroit's success on defense so far in the preseason has been a result of getting off the field on third down and pressuring the opponents' quarterbacks. Detroit enters this week's game vs. New England ranking sixth in opponent third-down percentage (25.8). and sixth in team sacks (8.0). ¾The Lions lead the NFL so far in producing three-and-out drives on defense, as they have forced opponents into 11 three-and-outs on 25 drives (44.0 percent) 2017 Preseason Leaders, Opp. 3rd Down Percentage Rk Tm G Made Att Pct. 1 Bal NYJ Dal t NYG t Cle Det Preseason Leaders, 3 & Out Drives - Defense Rk Team G Drives 3&Out 3&Out% 1 Det NYJ Bal Dal NYG WHAT TO WATCH FOR Spence on having fun with his teammates on the field: That s how you play this game. If you are not having fun, then why play it? That is my mentality. I m trying to bring that game and instill that in everybody. When we re out there and you all make some plays, I m going to be the first one over there to pick them up off the ground and high-five because that was a great play. You keep doing that enough and guys will start making plays all over the field. That will transfer over to the offense, you know, they will start making big plays down the field. That s how you start winning ball games. OFFENSE STRUTS ITS STUFF The Lions second preseason game of the season showed that the first-team offense is developing continuity as the season approaches. The offense continues to evolve in hopes to display a versatile approach on the cusps of the 2017 regular season. On the offense s first play from scrimmage, Lions QB Matthew Stafford effectively showcased a play-action to RB Ameer Abdullah before connecting with WR Golden Tate down the sideline. The 18-yard completion setup the very next play for a six-yard handoff to Abdullah. While just a sample size of Detroit s planned attack for 2017, the offensive unit hopes to have many opportunities to diversify its playbook. Stafford on the effectiveness of the play-action: Yeah, I think obviously, the better we run the ball, the better those are going to be. Started off with one tonight out of the gate and I thought the next couple times we handed the ball to Ameer (Abdullah), he did a nice job, too. They go hand in hand. Obviously a lot of play-action passes you ve got some chances to take some shots down the field, make some big plays and we did that a little bit tonight. Stafford and WR Marvin Jones Jr. connected early in the second quarter, scoring the first touchdown of the preseason for the first-team offense. Stafford and Jones are back for their second year as a quarterback and receiver duo and primed to improve upon last year's success. Stafford on continuing to build chemistry with Jones Jr.: Just another year under our belt, I think another year in the system for him, another year in the system for me. I thought really all our guys on the outside played well today, caught the ball at a high rate, which was a good thing. Golden (Tate) obviously had a couple nice catches as well. Marvin played really well, so we ll look at the tape. Always stuff to clean up, but those guys played well. Stafford on Jones Jr. s practice style carrying over into the game: He does a nice job with body control, man. His body control is pretty outrageous. By the sidelines he s always got a knack for finding a way to get that last, little foot in or whatever it is. He did it again tonight with the fade.

Jones Jr. finished the game with most targets of any receiver on the night and totaled four receptions for 34 yards and one touchdown. Caldwell on Jones Jr. s production from early last season to this season: Yeah, I think that one of the things that you ll notice about him is he s, to me when I look at him and watch him practice, he s better than he was a year ago. He s coming out of cuts better. He s running better routes I think the big thing is no huge physical differences. But I think he s better in terms of his cuts within the system. Often times, it takes a guy a little time to kind of get accustomed to a system. And I think now he s grown a little bit better within it and it takes a little time. But I can see improvement from him that s for sure. Jones Jr. on what the offense can accomplish this season: It can be great, obviously. Our goal, every time is to be the best offense and bring out the best us. Every game, game in and game out, we are all comfortable. We all know that, that s what we are supposed to be. We need to be like that. It s a little snapshot of some success. In 16 games, he compiled an interception percentage of 1.7 (594 attempts, 10 interceptions). He broke the Lions record among qualifying quarterbacks (min. 224 attempts/14 att. per team game) that was set in 1998 by QB Charlie Batch (2.0 pct; 303 attempts, 6 interceptions). 8 With a win over Chicago in Week 14, Detroit set a new NFL record, surpassing the previous total of seven set by the 2009 Indianapolis Colts (also coached by Jim Caldwell), for the most wins in a season after trailing in the fourth quarter. 10 With DE Ezekiel Ansah and DE Anthony Zettel each recording a sack in Week 15 at NYG (12/18), 2016 marked the thirdconsecutive season ( ) that the Lions have had 10 players record at least one sack. His 31 field goals rank as the third-highest single-season total in team history behind K Jason Hanson (34 in 1993 and 32 in 2012) P Sam Martin finished the 2016 season with a 44.2 net punting average as he re-set the Lions record for net punting average in a season by passing the 42.0 average he established in By finishing the season with a net punting average, he accomplished this for the fourth-consecutive season. Martin s 44.2 net putting average ranks as the third-best single-season total in NFL history since the statistic first became official in WR Golden Tate (91), WR Anquan Boldin (67), TE Eric Ebron (61), WR Marvin Jones Jr. (55) and RB Theo Riddick (53) each totaled 50+ catches in The Lions became the fifth team in NFL history, and first in franchise history, to feature five different players with at least 50 catches in a season. Other teams to accomplish this include; 1980 Cleveland Browns, 1994 New England Patriots, 2011 New Orleans Saints and 2013 Denver Broncos. LIONS BY THE NUMBERS 91 WR Golden Tate caught 6 passes for 77 yards against Green Bay and finished the 2016 season with a team-high 91 catches. By recording 91 receptions in 2016, Tate became the second player in team history to record 90+ receptions in three different seasons. He joined WR Herman Moore (123 in 1995, 106 in 1996 and 104 in 1997) as the only Lions receivers to accomplish this feat and to do so in three consecutive seasons. 96 QB Matthew Stafford enters his ninth NFL season having started in 96 consecutive games. His 96 consecutive games played rank fourth among all active NFL quarterbacks behind only Eli Manning (199), Philip Rivers (176) and Matt Ryan (115). 132 LB Tahir Whitehead collected 7 total tackles in the 2016 season finale vs. Green Bay and finished the year with a team-best 132 tackles. Lang. Both acquired as unrestriced free agents this year, Lang (94) and Wagner (47) have started a combined 141 games during their careers. 196 By playing at New Orleans (12/4/16), LS Don Mulhbach surpassed T Jeff Backus (191) for the fourth-most games played in Detroit Lions history. Entering his 14th NFL season, Muhlbach has tallied 196 career games. 711 With 61 receptions for 711 yards last season, TE Eric Ebron set new single-season career highs in both receiving categories. Ebron s 711 receiving yards are now the third-most by a Lions tight end in a single season, and this marks only the third time a Lions tight end has recorded 700+ receiving yards. 930 In his first season with the Lions in 2016, WR Marvin Jones Jr. hauled in 55 receptions for 930 yards.
