Hytche Athletic Center. UMES outrebounded the Spartans, 42-36, and shot over 70-percent from the foul line. Despite 17 second chance points, the biggest difference came in the turnover margin. Norfolk State finished +10 and forced 22 Lady Hawk miscues. Freshman guard Ciani Byrom had a game-high 22 points, six boards, and four dimes. Fellow guard Moengaroa Subritzky also reached double-figures with 11 points in a losing effort. Other notable performance included freshman guard Keyera Eaton finishing with a career-high 12 boards and five points in 36 minutes of action. Maryland Eastern Shore enters with a two-game losing streak. The guard combo of Byrom and Subritzky have been the catalyst, combining for more than 21 PPG. Despite being 2-8 on the road, UMES lone road wins came against MEAC foes North Carolina A&T State and South Carolina State. Udoji continues her pursuit as the program s all-time shot block leader, needing only four rejections. Scouting the Lady Hornets: Delaware State comes in looking to end a brief two-game skid. First-year head coach Barbara Burgess has rejuvenated the program as they have won more games than a year ago. DSU has three Hornets in double-figures, led by Mikah Aldridge (12.4). Newcomer Najah Pollard is a frontrunner for MEAC Rookie of the Year, posting 10.3 PPG and 7.3 RPG. Amber Bogard rounds out the Hornets trio, registering 10.8 PPG. 4 PRESEASON HONORS College Sports Madness: After picking up MEAC Preseason honors, UMES forward Alexis Udoji earned her second preseason accolade from College Sports Madness (CSM). MEAC: On Oct. 13, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed their Preseason accolades and Massachusetts native Alexis Udoji received recognition as she was chosen to the Preseason All-Conference Team for the second consecutive season. On Jan.25, guard took home CSM Conference Player of the Week after her performances against Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State. MEAC: On Nov. 16, freshman guard Ciani Byrom earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week after her performances against Georgetown and USC-Upstate. 5 CLUBS 10-Rebound Club: On Jan. 11, 2016, Alexis Udoji registered her 20th career 10-plus rebound performance with 12 boards against Morgan State. With this performance, she has the second most 10-plus rebound performances since the season. Letting It Fly: Currently, the club ranks tied for fifth the MEAC in three-pointers made per game (4.8). Over the past two seasons, the club has led the conference in that same category. Win One For Batch: On Nov. 24, head coach Fred Batchelor picked up his 200th career win as a head coach with the victory over Cheyney. There s A First For Everything: On Dec. 15, forward Alexis Udoji became the first player in the program s history to register at least 600 points, 600 rebounds, and 200 blocks. Protect The Hytche: Since his arrival in 2004, Coach Batchelor has accumulated a 56-percent winning percentage at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center (84-65). In 11 seasons, the Lady Hawks have suffered only one losing home record. This season, the squad is 4-7 at home. The Future Is Now: On Jan. 11, Coach Batchelor started freshmen guards Ciani Byrom and Keyera Eaton in the Lady Hawks backcourt; thus, becoming one of the youngest guard tandems in the nation. Currently, only eight NCAA Division I institutions have had a freshmen backcourt to start a minimum of one game this season (CSNU, UCF, Charlotte, UConn, Illinois State, UMES, Mercer, and Portland State). 15 COACHING STAFF Associate head coach Revonda Whitley begins her eleventh season at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and her 13th season as an assistant coach to Fred Batchelor. Her resume includes coaching the Columbia Warriors men's semi-professional basketball team (1998) and coaching girls at The Timmerman School (1999). She was also the head junior varsity coach at Eau Claire High School (2000), all in Columbia, S.C. REVONDA WHITLEY Whitley played four years for Winthrop University from 1990 through 1994, finishing with over 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 140 steals in her stellar career. She earned triple digit points and rebounds in all four years with the Eagles. Whitley has five siblings, all of whom contributed to her love for the game of basketball. She currently resides in Princess Anne, Md. Cedric Jenkins begins his ninth season as an assistant coach at UMES. He is responsible for game preparation and student-athlete development among other duties. Jenkins graduated from UMES in 1993 with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration. He was a two-year letterwinner with the Fighting Hawks basketball team and was named the team's Most Improved Player during his first season in Princess Anne. CEDRIC JENKINS As a freshman at Camden County College (Blackwood, N.J.), Jenkins helped the team to a 32-0 record. The Cougars were back-to-back Region XIX Champions during his two seasons. Jenkins, originally from Washington D.C., now resides in Salisbury, Md., with his wife Alethia, his son Jalen and his two daughters, Aaliyah and Maya. Last December, Coach Jenkins and family welcomed a new baby boy,xavier, to the family. Vontreece Hayes enters her first season with the Lady Hawks after finishing her collegiate career at Greensboro College in North Carolina. Last season, Hayes played her final collegiate season for the Greensboro Pride where they won the 2015 USA South Conference Regular Season and Tournament Title. The team captain started all 28 contests while helping the squad finish 24-5 overall, including an unblemished home record. Recently, Vontreece was part of the semi-professional women s basketball USA Elite in VONTREECE HAYES Greensboro, N.C. Also, Hayes joined the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s (WBCA) So You Want To Be a Coach Program where she met Coach Batchelor.
