3 Season Outlook

4 Season Outlook 2006 Spring Outlook/2005 Fall Review Auburn, although primarily veterans this season, faces a new challenge in The Tigers spent the fall season hoping to find a new leader and develop an identity that would define the season. With the departure of All-American Diana Ramage to graduation in 2005, the Tigers were looking for a new leader. Although still impressive, a slower than normal start to the season forced Auburn to dig deep and the Tigers responded, showing marked improvement with each tournament. Through the first three months of the season, they found a team with a fresh new identity, but the same old drive and determination, synonomous with Auburn golf. Auburn has a strong history, which was shown in the fall by the Tigers' No. 3 ranking by Golfweek for top programs in the last five years. The team has a lot to live up to, but the Tigers are up to the challenge. "We knew that we were going to have a lot to replace both on and off the golf course with Diana graduating," head coach Kim Evans said. "We started off a little slow, but the team really came together and proved they are capable of stepping up and taking the reigns of this program." Senior Maria Martinez came into her own in the fall season, winning the Derby Invitational by nine strokes, which rounded out the fall season for the Tigers. Martinez, an All-American and All-SEC team member in 2005, consistently improved, finishing 15th in the Cougar Classic, second in the Mason Rudolph and fifth in the Lady Tar Heel Inivtational, in addition to winning the Derby Invitational. Martinez was named the Golfweek and Golf World Player of the Week for her performance in the tournament. Just a few weeks later, Martinez was selected to the Golf World Midseason All-America team. As a team, Auburn concluded the fall season with a record, also improving as the season went on. At the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston, the Tigers placed fourth of 17 to open the season. Two weeks later, Auburn finished fifth of 15 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club at the Mason Rudolph Championship. At the highly-competitive Lady Tar Heel Invitational, Auburn finished second of 18 and rounded out the fall winning the Derby Invitational at the Auburn University Club. "The Derby win was important because it helped show the girls the results of their hard work in the fall," Evans said. "Maria had an outstanding tournament and really put her name out there as one of the best in the country." Auburn returns five starters to its lineup as sophomore Abigale Schepperle and junior Jessica Lovell split time last season. Also returning, in addition to Martinez, are junior All-American Nicole Hage, and sophomore Margaret Shirley. Junior Betsy Boyd returns to the team this season and is joined by freshmen Mariana Macias of Madrid, Spain and Marisa Milligan of Normal, Ill. "We return a veteran lineup, but still have a good bit of youth with just one senior on the team," Evans said. "Our entire starting lineup has had big-time tournament experience which will be invaluable this season heading into post-season play as we look to defend our SEC and NCAA Regional titles. "Bringing in Mariana and Marisa as our freshman class gives us depth. Mariana has gotten a taste of collegiate golf playing in a few tournaments as an individual and those will be beneficial down the stretch." The lineup of Hage, Lovell, Martinez, Schepperle and Shirley played in all four tournaments of the fall season with Macias playing in two tournaments as an individual. The Tigers have four tournaments in the spring before their Juniors Jessica Lovell and Nicole Hage postseason play begins as they attempt to defend their SEC and NCAA Central Regional title. Feb the Tigers open up at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. From March 3-5, Auburn will compete at the LSU Cleveland Classic in Baton Rouge, La. and from March 24-26, the Tigers will be at the Liz Murphey Classic in Athens, Ga. Auburn won its fifth SEC Championship in 2005 and will look to defend its title April in Nashville, Tenn. at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. The NCAA Regional tournaments will be held May Last season, Auburn also claimed the NCAA Central Region. The 2006 NCAA Championship will be held May at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. "We are excited to get started with the spring season," Evans said. "We have a lot of work to do, but I am encouraged by the things I saw this fall season." 4

41 The Derby Invitational Curtis Cup Champion and former Auburn coach and player Virginia Derby-Grimes with current Auburn head coach Kim Evans Since its inception in 1994, the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational has earned a reputation for being one of the nation s finest women s collegiate golf tournaments. The tournament gives each team an early barometer of how it stacks up against the top teams in the nation. The top teams in the country have graced The Derby and 2005 was no exception with a field including Alabama, Auburn, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kansas, LSU, Mississippi, North Carolina State, UNC Wilmington, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Florida. At the start of the 1998 event, the Auburn Tiger Invitational was renamed the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational beginning in 1999 in honor of Curtis Cup Champion and former Auburn player and coach, Virginia Derby-Grimes. Grimes played at Auburn under legendary Coach Bud Marsee in 1985 when the women s golf program was re-instituted after a four-year hiatus. She then came back to coach the Tiger golf team for three years from while leading them to a pair of NCAA East Regional berths. She orchestrated the beginning of the Auburn Tiger Invitational in We couldn t think of a more distinguished or better person to name our tournament after than Virginia Derby-Grimes, former Auburn athletic director David Housel said. She has played at Auburn, coached at Auburn, represented Auburn worldwide and still puts her heart and soul into the Tiger program. Virginia is a great friend to the game of golf and an even bigger part of our Auburn Family. Derby-Grimes, whose career is highly-decorated as being one of the top amateur players in the world, anchored the United States team to a thrilling victory in the final day of the Curtis Cup in the summer of Grimes, who also was a part of the 2000 Curtis Cup championship team, was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in She won the 1998 U.S. Mid-Amateur title and was an alternate for the 1998 USA World Cup team. She is a former Alabama State Amateur Champion and Alabama Junior State Amateur Champion. Since the inaugural tournament held in 1994, the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational has consistently attracted top-quality teams and individuals. The 2002 field featured 13 of the best teams in the nation, and Tennessee went on to win the tournament. Tennessee s Violeta Retamoza defeated Auburn All-American Celeste Troche on the third playoff hole for the individual title. Auburn captured the 2005 Derby Invitational led by Maria Martinez (far left), who won the event by nine strokes. 51 The University

52 Auburn University Interim President Dr. Ed Richardson The Board of Trustees unanimously named Edward R. Richardson as interim president of Auburn University on Jan. 20, Richardson, former state school superintendent, has a familiarity with Auburn, born of a 24-year association with the university, as preparation for the interim presidency. Prior to accepting the post, Richardson had been state superintendent of education since October During his eight-year tenure in Montgomery, Richardson was the Alabama Board of Education's executive officer for the State Department of Education. In that capacity, he was the state's top appointed official over Alabama's k-12 public schools. Richardson became state superintendent at a time when the State Board of Education was starting the most ambitious academic improvement program in Alabama's history. Among his first major responsibilities as state superintendent was to oversee implementation of the Education Accountability Law passed in the 1995 Legislative Session. The State Board of Education developed a plan that requires schools and school systems to operate with academic and financial accountability. Richardson enforced that law and intervened in 10 school systems for financial reasons and in one school for academic reasons. In 1996, Richardson recommended to the State Board of Education a plan for implementing the nation's highest graduation requirements. Richardson also implemented the issuance of easyto-understand report cards on the performance of every school system in the state and the development of a comprehensive technology plan for all elementary and secondary schools. The plan included providing advanced courses via distance learning to schools that might not otherwise offer such courses. Before he became state superintendent, Richardson was superintendent of schools for the Auburn City Board of Education for 13 years. He spent nine years as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Montgomery County school system and served nine years as principal of Andalusia high School. Richardson has earned three degrees from Auburn University - a B.S. in science education in 1962, an M.Ed. in 1967, and an Ed.D. in 1972, both in educational administration. Athletics Director Jay Jacobs After working in almost every area of the Auburn athletic department for the past 20 years, Jay Jacobs was named Auburn's 14th director of athletics on Dec. 22, For Jacobs, it was the final step in a career that has allowed the LaFayette native to gain a wide-range of experiences in collegiate athletics, from the perspective of a student-athlete, to the position of senior associate athletic director in charge of Tigers Unlimited, Auburn's fund-raising arm. Jacobs grew up just 20 miles from Auburn in LaFayette and would make several trips a year to the campus to watch athletic events. Later, after moving to Jacksonville, Fla., to attend high school, he returned to Auburn for college. After walking on the Auburn football team, he earned two letters as an offensive tackle in 1982 and As a senior, he earned a scholarship and started for the SEC Championship Tigers that finished the season ranked third nationally. Not long after his career ended against Michigan in the 1984 Sugar Bowl, Jacobs started the journey that led him to being named athletic director. After one season as a coach at Lee-Scott Academy in Auburn, Jacobs returned to his alma matter in 1985 as the assistant strength and conditioning coach. After serving two seasons ( ) as a graduate football coach, Jacobs was named conditioning coach, a position he held for three years ( ). In 1991, he became an assistant athletic director. Three years later, he was promoted to associate athletic director for operations, overseeing a variety of support functions in the athletic department. As the senior associate athletic director in charge of Tigers Unlimited since 2001, Jacobs oversaw the fund-raising efforts that secured approximately $60-million in gifts in the last three years. He spearheaded a $90 million capital campaign which is the largest in Auburn athletic history. Through his years of service, Jacobs has gained a reputation for his character, integrity and his ability. "I've had the good fortune of knowing Jay Jacobs for over 20 years," said Hal Baird, athletic assistant to the President at the announcement press conference. "Jay was educated at Auburn, trained at Auburn and as such, has a valuable insight to the challenges that this job has. What I see as challenges and obstacles, I think he sees as an opportunity. That is the perfect attitude to undertake with this position. I know with 100 percent certainty that Auburn University will absolutely get his very best effort from dawn until dusk everyday." Jacobs earned his undergraduate and master's degree in business administration from Auburn in 1985 and 1988, respectively. He is married to the former Angie Sapp of Dublin, Ga. The couple has three daughters. 52

54 This Is Auburn University Auburn University HISTORY Auburn University has a proud and dynamic 148- year history. The institution was chartered on February 1, 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, a private liberal arts school established by Alabama Methodists to foster Christian education. A single four-story building was completed at a cost of $111,000 in 1859 with 80 students enrolled and a faculty of five. Five male students were graduated in the first commencement held. When Alabama seceded from the Union, faculty and students resigned to enlist for the duration of the Civil War. Among those joining was William J. Samford, later Governor of Alabama. The college building, then named Old Main, was used as a Confederate hospital from 1864 until classes resumed in When fire destroyed Old Main in 1887, it was replaced on the same site in 1888 by Samford Hall, named after Gov. Samford. Today Samford Hall serves as the university's administrative headquarters. The college struggled in the shattered Southern economy during the years after the Civil War. It was a ruined economy and those that pledged large sums to the college went bankrupt and could not meet their pledges. The Methodist Church granted the institution to the state in 1872 for use as a land-grant university under the Morrill Act, signed by President Lincoln in The institution then became the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, changing from the private liberal arts school to a state-supported college with an emphasis on the new scientific and agricultural programs. Continuous expansion followed. In 1899, the Alabama Legislature decided a new name was needed to reflect the expanded role of the institution. The college's name was changed to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. From the beginning, however, virtually everyone connected with the university ignored official names, preferring always, the name selected for the town, founded in 1836, where the institution was located - Auburn. Elizabeth Harper, the daughter-in-law of the settlements founder, was inspired by a line from Oliver Goldsmith's poem, The Deserted Village, which reads, Sweet Auburn, loveliest village on the plain. Would the history of this institution have been the same had it been named Geneva as once proposed for naming the town? The story goes that straws were drawn for naming the town Geneva or Auburn. Auburn won out. As Charles C. Thach, the university's sixth president said, "The Alabama Polytechnic Institute, a high sounding phrase, is fit for legal document; and grave legislation, but not to conjure with and not to yell and not to dream with, as is Fair Auburn." The Legislature agreed, and in 1960 Alabama Polytechnic Institute became Auburn University. Women students were first admitted to Auburn in 1892, making Auburn the oldest four-year coeducational school in Alabama and the second oldest in the Southeast. Auburn's greatest growth and development came after World War II. From a campus of 35 buildings in 1946, the university's multi-million dollar physical complex has grown to approximately 375 buildings on 1,840 acres. The Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station conducts crop, animal and soil experimentation statewide, and Extension agents are stationed in all 67 Alabama counties. Main campus enrollment is more than 23,000, with about 1,270 faculty. AUBURN TODAY Twelve schools and colleges advance the university's outstanding programs of teaching, research and service. The current colleges and schools and the dates of this original inception are: College of Agriculture, 1872; College of Architecture Design and Construction, 1907; College of Business, 1967; College of Education, 1915; Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, 1872; School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, 1984; College of Human Sciences, 1916; College of Liberal Arts, 1986; School of Nursing, 1979; James Harrison School of Pharmacy, 1885; College of Sciences and Mathematics from the former school of Arts and Sciences (1872), as well as portions of the School of Agriculture and Biological Sciences and the School of Architecture and Fine Arts (both subsequently renamed). AU's College of Engineering took a major leap forward in 2001 when an alumnus decided his alma mater should take the national lead in the teaching of wireless communication and related engineering research and 54

55 teaching. Samuel L. Ginn, a pioneer in wireless communication, backed up his vision with a $25 million gift to the college and announced plans to spearhead an additional $150 million in support. Auburn has been home to an excellent honors program since 1979, which was established as the first Honors College among Alabama's colleges and universities. The college has proven to be one of Alabama's major inducements to the brightest students who are interested in Auburn. 57 Auburn Traditions According to legend, football and the cry of "War Eagle" came to Auburn the same day. It was February 20, 1892, the day Auburn and Georgia met in the first game of the longest continuous rivalry in the Deep South. The story actually began before that. That first Auburn-Georgia game was only the culmination. It began in 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia. An Auburn student had gone off to fight with Robert E. Lee and the Confederate troops. He was with them on the worst day of the long and fierce battle. He was wounded, and when the armies retreated to their respective lines, he was left on the battlefield for dead. When he regained consciousness, there were only two living things as far as he could see, himself and a baby eagle. Brought together by their common bond of misery, the soldier took the wounded bird with him and nursed him back to health. When he returned to Auburn after the war, the eagle came with him. The student-turned-soldier came back to Auburn and ultimately became a member of the faculty. He was there that day in Atlanta's Piedmont Park when Auburn and Georgia met in what would now be called "The Game of the Century." As usual, the eagle-called War Eagle because of the circumstances under which he was found-was there with him. When Auburn scored the first touchdown the old eagle broke free from its master and began to soar above the field. Auburn people looked skyward, saw the familiar figure, and shouted "War Eagle." At the end of the game which Auburn won 10-0, the old eagle collapsed and died, presumably having given his all in pursuit of victory for Auburn. War Eagle's body may have died that day, but his spirit lives forever in the hearts of auburn people who love to stand and shout "War-r-r-r-r Eagle" long into the night following an Auburn victory. The facts of this legend cannot be authenticated, but it makes a good story and is the one most used to describe how the "War Eagle" battle cry became associated with Auburn teams. Auburn teams are known as "The Auburn Tigers," but the cry of the Auburn faithful is ever the same: "War-r-rr-r-r Eagle!" War Eagle V, which had represented Auburn for five seasons, died just days prior to the 1986 season-opener. Following a nationwide search for the perfect eagle, War Eagle IV was located at Land Between the Lakes, Ky. The female Golden Eagle underwent numerous tests and conditioning programs at the Auburn Vet School before making its debut at the Georgia game on Nov. 15, 1986 in Auburn. AUBURN NICKNAME EXPLANATION Auburn's nickname is the TIGERS. Auburn's battle cry is "WAR EAGLE!" Through the years, these two Auburn terms have often been used interchangeably and incorrectly. There are hats and T-shirts with Auburn War Eagles on them. Even the news media has been known to refer to an Auburn team as the War Eagles or to an Auburn player as a War Eagle. In fact, when the Tigers play a game on the road, there is often an article written in the local paper wondering why Auburn has three nicknames-the Auburn Tigers, the Auburn War Eagles and the Auburn Plainsmen. To set the record straight, Auburn has only one nickname - the Auburn Tigers. "War Eagle" is a battle cry, used by Auburn fans in the same manner Alabama fans yell "Roll Tide!" and Arkansas fans yell "Sooie Pig!" You never hear Alabama referred to as the Alabama Roll Tides or Arkansas as the Arkansas Sooie Pigs, and to call Auburn tams the Auburn War Eagles would be just as incorrect. The battle cry "War Eagle" should never have an "s" on the end of it. The nickname "Tigers" comes from a line in Oliver Goldsmith's poem, "The Deserted Village," published in May 1770, "where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey " The term "Plainsmen" comes from a line in that same Goldsmith poem, "Sweet Auburn, loveliest (sic) village of the plain " Since Auburn athletes were, in the early days, men from the Plains, it was only natural for newspaper headline writers to shorten that to "Plainsmen." It may be confusing to an outsider, but to Auburn people, it is very simple. That's why War Eagle VI, Auburn's golden eagle mascot, is named Tiger! Auburn University 2005 SEC Champions 57

The course opened in the fall of 1999 and it is the site for the The Derby, one of the premier college golf tournaments in the country. The Auburn University Course also played host to the 2003 NCAA East Men s Regional. Bucky Ayers, formerly of The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Grand National site, is the Director of Golf and General Manager of The Auburn University Club. The Auburn University Club features an 18-hole championship golf course, state-of-the-art practice facilities and a full service clubhouse as well as office space for the Auburn University Golf Coaches and soon-to-be locker rooms for both the men's and women's golf teams. Golf Course Located off Shug Jordan Parkway, just north of campus, the Auburn University Club at Yarbrough Farms is situated on more than 200 acres of rolling wooded terrain. Endowed with outstanding natural amenities such as Yarbrough Lake, the 25-acre centerpiece of the property, and Saugahatchee Creek, which meanders along the 12th, 13th and 14th holes, the site is one of the top golf courses in the South. At 7,259 yards from the back tees, the golf course carves through magnificent trees, across wetlands, along creeks and streams and around the lake. Natural and man-enhanced water features play a prominent role at The Auburn University Club as they blend throughout the property and are visible on 14 of 18 holes. Designed with the intention of hosting an NCAA or other national championship, the course is a challenging yet playable for all levels of golfers. With subtly shaped Crenshaw bentgrass greens, surrounded by a balanced mix of chipping areas, bunkers and rough and fairways that roll and blend with the existing contours, The Auburn University Club at Yarbrough Farms is destined to become a distinguished addition to the Loveliest Village on the Plains. Practice Facility Utilizing 22 acres, the practice facility features a range of nearly 400 yards with tees at both ends allowing players to train in a variety of wind conditions. Additionally, a unique area has been designed for situation practice so that shots may be re-created and played into actual greens from every conceivable lie and length. Furthermore, there are bentgrass and bermudagrass putting greens so that team members may prepare for whatever type of surface they may be facing in their next event. The practice facility is ideal for working on all aspects of the game and is outstanding for the golf teams, lessons and clinics, and for summer golf camp programs. Designer Former Auburn golfer Bill Bergin designed The Auburn University Club at Yarbrough Farms. The fourtime All-SEC selection and member of Auburn's 1981 SEC Championship team, began his design career in 1990 under Bob Cupp, the 1992 Architect of the Year. 58
